One Drop One Kill. - HTC Inspire 4G

I pulled mt Inspire from my holster on my hip and lost grip as it hung up on the holster it was in. It fell less than 3 feet to the ground. I heard a disturbing glass crash as it hit and picked up a trashed Inspire off the floor. I found a new digitizer on Amazon.com for a reasonable price but decided to take mine all the way apart before ordering the new glass digitizer. As I disassembled the Inspire, it became apparent that it was more than just the digitizer that was broken. The black casing that holds the digitizer and LCD was broken in two spots.
Although the phone was only three months old, I decided that if it was to break this easy it wasn't worth the constant fixing that my clumsy hands were to bestow upon it. At 3 months I declare it dead. I pulled out an old Samsung Eternity I had literally thrown at walls and it never cracked and started using it. HTC's designs are very poor. From the battery door to the random rebooting to the poor Bluetooth to the one drop one kill digitizer screen. I despise the Iphone but at least its a bit heartier than the Inspire and my be my next choice. I have never broken a screen on any phone I've ever owned this was way too easy.

Did it have a case on it?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App

Yea...did you have a case and screen protector? I have dropped my inspire from about 3 feet onto solid concrete not once bit twice and suffered no damage at all because I had protection. Secondly...iPhone or android, these phones are expensive and fragile enough to justify getting insurance. Its well worth it my friend.

@ dooyoo, me thinks prolly not. I've dropped mine so many times, habits bounce around in the cab of my truck w/out any issues. My Speck Candy case has MOAR than paid for itself.

that sucks... I've dropped mine a few times onto the pavement, I have a bad habit of putting the phone down on my lap when driving and when I get out of the truck I forget.. then boom but it never broke (knock on wood) Best thing to have is a good case.. I have a fish bone case..

I call it a day with my otterbox commuter. An extra 30 saves me so much headache in the long run.

I cracked my iphone screen twice. I've dropped my inspire twice (once face down) and no breakage. The difference? The otterbox commuter case. Picked mine up for $16 on Amazon.

sounds like a fluke to me. ive dropped mine a few times on hard tile with no damage, one time on asphalt. i have a couple scratched on the body, nothing major.
i got a rubber body glove case and now i dont worry about it.

I've dropped my phone twice from about 4 feet, once on cement and once on a wood floor. My Otterbox Commuter case perfectly preserved the phone both times.

I had a Samsung Captivate 2 phones ago and it didn't survive the "accelerated fall" that I did to it. It had the infamous "shuts itself off for no f-n reason" issue. Only thing that broke was the screen, glass and digitizer though. It still turns on but I didn't bother to get it fixed because then I would have a phone that still shuts itself off. Anyway, I have a silicone case on my Inspire that i got for $20 at At&t store and I use the screen protectors they offer there. Phones been dropped a few times with no issues of damage or strange flukes.

I smashed my girlfriends screen last night, insurance had a new omen her hands today. For a whole &50 more than I paid for it though.

My son's ipod survived a crash with an Otterbox on it. Would have gone with one, but didn't want anyone to mistake my Inspire for an iPhone.

Lmao it sounds more like a iPhone fan boy came up in here trying to find a way to diss android and the inspire without becoming labeled as "flaming". Now I've dropped mine from the upstairs apartment balcony because my nephew picked it up without seeing it and as I tried to get it,it slipped and fell, hit concrete and went under the truck. I picked it up and with the armor guard (zagg) and otterbox defender saved it and not one scratch or rattle after taking it out of the case.

I have never had a case on my inspire because it's big enough without one and I have dropped it on concrete a few times from about three feet without a scratch on the thing. Sounds like a fluke or a fanboi.

To knock the phones build quality is ridiculous. The main factor is the position the phone is in as it hits the ground. Plain and simple. Having an otterbox helps too.

Yes indeed. If it hit glass first, that would def shatter any phone. HTC stepped up and used uni body casing and man it feels strong. I've used Motorola,Sony Erickson,SamDung, and now HTC. HTC always from now on.

I've dropped my phone a few times, but I have a silicon case on it. Never had any scratches either.
I also have a technique that has saved many of my phones... whenever I drop it I extend my foot to where it's falling so that it'll hit my shoe and slow down a bit before hitting the ground. Works like a charm.

Otterbox Commuter - phone got run over by a car and survived!

So, long story short...
I was stupid enough to drive off from a parking lot with my phone on top of the roof of the car.
Returned some time later to circle the parking lot, looking for it with no luck. Figured it must have held on through some turns due to the rubber corners, so I left the lot and retraced my route, leading back to a main street. Crawling at 10 mph at 2 o'clock in the morning, I held on to the hope that I would spot it.
Seeing a black object on the side of the road, I pulled over thinking I'd finally found it... only to discover it was someone else's expensive smartphone! As you can see from the pictures below, I think it's a Motorola Droid X with the screen smashed to bits.

Disheartened, but still not giving up, I kept driving. A couple of blocks down, I saw another black object and stopped in the middle of the road. It was the Otterbox's soft inner case... a few feet away from it I found the naked Inspire, and its battery. As you can imagine, I was already quite happy at this point.. but I couldn't see if the phone worked or not without the battery cover. So I made a u-turn, circled around twice, and found my battery cover as well as the Otterbox's outer shell, which was squished on the sides, with some of them flattened.. obviously run over by a car.
Back in the car, I inspected my phone (no scratches on the screen, some scrapes at the corners and around the lens, but all cosmetic), popped the battery in, and it didn't boot. I realized that I'd put the battery in the wrong way, and tried again. White screen, HTC logo, and CM7 boot! My phone had just survived falling from the roof of my car and being run over by another one.
Moral of the story is.. HTC build quality rocks and the Commuter is an awesome case! If it could do this for my phone, the Defender would pretty much render it indestructible.
PS I salvaged the 16gb microsd card from the Motorola and upgraded my 8gb one! Lmao.

Damage Report:
As you can see, the scratched areas are the corners and the lens (only the rim, not the glass!).. which are the only areas the Commuter's hard shell doesn't fully cover.
It seems as if the phone had shed the silicone skin before the corner damage occurred, as the skin seems to be unharmed.. that might have prevented some or most of them.
Not bad! Thanks for sharing because I have been considering that case.
Glad to have gotten the same case and I really do like the case personally the first time I put it on. Thanks for sharing your story mate.

Just got my phone this past Friday and I'm looking into getting accessories for it. Thank you for this post as it helped me decide which case to get now.
It'll be nice if Otter actually have some in stock for people that are looking to buy it.
I think they get new stock every few days. I tried to order a new one the night of the incident with no luck. The next afternoon, they were back in stock and I got my order in.
Sent from a telegraph station somewhere in northern Russia.
Sorry to hear about your accident Pheno.menon but look at the brightside, you have your phone intact with little to no damage.
Wow, good to see the case I bought a week prior to buying my Inspire does its job.
Bite the bullet and buy the Otterbox Commuter everyone, looking at mine now and am more than satisfied by the protection as well & the styling it gives the already beautiful phone.
I'm always in an attempt to keep it that way.
Specs of the case:
I know this is not the streak thread but hey i read them all! I must say the commuter is for real i dropped my streak from over six feet it bounced a couple times then slid on the concrete all i could think was well there went that phone i was sick because some peoples have been broken from way less. Anyway to get to the point no damage at all otterbox commuter a+++++++++++ a must have.

This thing turns a thin sexi phone into a BEAST. I guess it's all about how you treat your phone... if you're one to drop the phone, yeah, you need this, and it's worth having it turned into a thick beast of a phone for the protection, but if you're careful and not 12 years old, a standard case or no case is just fine.
It never ceases to amaze me that people buy slim\sleek phones, then put a big ol case on it... total waste. If it breaks it breaks. If you're that prone to destroying phones, get insurance. Not worth ruining the aesthetics of the phone.
I'm also baffled as to what would cause a car to run over a phone. I guess the same pool of people as end up on Judge Judy and Jerry Springer.
I think this thread just helped me make my decision on cases!

If you buy the matte black or white versions that show on Case Mates website, you'll be fine. After going through 5+ cases, I love the matte black barely-there case. It's also the best performing case when it comes to signal strength.
Beware of the mirrored silver versions, which block the GPS signal.
+1 for the matte black barely there. I've got this case and it's great. Offers no protection whatsoever for the front of the screen, but as long as your careful, it shouldn't be an issue.

+1 for the barely there. Been using it about three weeks now. Love it.. No issues with signal or gps. Great case all around for what it is and what you need it to do.
I have the barley there case also. ONLY downside is that it makes the phone a bit slippery to hold. It adds almost no larger profile to the phone though, and weighs nothing
Have one also (white one, my chic has the pink one) had it on my phone for a few months now and its great. No issues with anything at all. Well worth the money if your looking to get one.
Just got my Barely There casemate (pink) and I love it !! I'm a big fan of CaseMate though.. also had one for my BB.

If you like the strength of the Otterbox you should look at the Casemate Pop case for the Inspire. It's a bit bulkier than the Barely There cases but it has grip on the sides so it's not slippery. It's probably not quite as durable as on Otterbox but it's a pretty good case. I've liked mine a lot so far.
Bought the pink barley there case and I love it! its not too bulky either. Its perfect.
I think i'm finally gonna pull the trigger on one of these, I'd rather be able to go to like Best Buy to check it out 1st hand...
I have the Speck case now and it's large profile rubs me the wrong way sometimes...
I'm thinking of getting this case for my Inspire, and I can't tell from the pictures how accessible the volume rocker and the power/lock button are. Anyone who owns the case can you comment on the ease of use of the physical buttons on this phone with this case on?
I got my case from ATT when I got my phone. It's the speck hard case

Ok, I finally got one!
I was heading home and stopped at a local mall that I haven't been to in years.
I love it, its so slim and sleek and almost feels like it is not there.
I know it doesn't offer much protection but its great.
It also came with 1 screen protector which I thought was weird...unless the jackass forgot to put it back in..
Also I grabbed the last one they had, in matte black.

Mine came with one, but I choose not to use the protectors. The Gorilla glass is tough enough for my personal use style. 6mths and still not a single scratch. (I bet I just jinxed it damnit..)
I have this case as well and I like it. I have a bigger, bulkier case that I can switch to if I think there is a better chance of my phone being dropped or bumped around. There is a very small difference in reception but not much.
Great case for everyday use. Doesn't stick inside my pocket and it's lightweight and thin.

I bought the ballistic BC case and I love it. Except for the screen protector. It got scratched and really blurry and it really ruined the amazing quality of the infuses screen. So I applied a regular screen protector (pack of three from Walmart for 10 bucks) and popped out the built in case protector easily by pushing on the edges and then put the case back on and now I must say that I am back to liking the case. And I am most likley going to dremel off the little Red bar behind the camera because it gives my pictures a red tint to it. I was skeptical at first but now its all good.

so why do you even want a screen protector? The glass is scratch resistant and off course the screen looks so much better without it.

Because scratch resistant doesn't mean it will never get scratched. Even with just light use there are ever so slight scratch marks near the top of my phone.
I have no scratches on my screen. Even after taking a key to it lol. Anyways what i came in here for was to say i had the ballistic case and the proximity sensor part was messing with my phone. heres a link where u can buy it for like half the price

I have the same case and I removed the built in protector not long after getting it. It just takes away from the beauty of the screen.
Are there any good ones that don't take away from the luxury of the nice screen?
I have that same case.. I love the belt clip holder. And no. I don't have that problem. And I take a good amount of pictures. I hope that dremel fixes your problems.
And as you said.. those Walmart screen protectors worked fine? There's not any give on the front part that clips in? It seems like there would be more than usual because it is a lot thinner of a protector? (for everyone that doesn't have one it's a fairly sheet thick of pllastic)
And if you are coming here thinking of getting one, I will share my experiences with you. The case is made up of a hard plastic that is a .... well let's just say it's really hard to take off. Not impossible but especially that first time. This makes battery pulls harder. Sometimes you can get around it by killing the phone by holding the power for 6 or so seconds and then hitting the volume keys at the right time but it doesn't always work. The outer layer that comes on the case is nice and bulky. If you think that you will be sticking it in your pocket with this layer you got another thing coming. It's a very sticky plastic which makes it very hard to pull out of a pocket. It works very well with the case holder though. A rather obnoxious thing is there is slits around the base layer that the case slides into. The top two and the bottom two tend to come undone very easily. They always seem to slide out which is annoying. It's doesn't exactly make it feel like the case is going to come off but annoying. The only way that you can keep it in your pocket is if you don't have that layer on which decreases the protection. It feels VERY solid when you have the extra layer on and rather secure when you don't. It's also a little rough on the hands around the edges so if you have soft girly hands then you might want to looks else wards towards a pretty smooth case. But if you are a man and work in something tough or just aren't sure where you will drop it, this is the case for you. (Have never used otterbox..). But that is NOT to say that this case is by any means perfect. I had this problem where it felt like the vibration inside the case was going to rattle the phone to pieces.. that was kind of unnerving but I got used to it after a while. Then when on vacation I hopped onto a hotel bed, my right hip landing on the bed and the hip belt holder BROKE! I wasn't very happy because I was busy and couldn't go to ATT but it would no longer hold my phone. After all these problems I took it back to ATT where they quickly traded out the case for a new one.. I had my receipt of course.. I THINK they used it? Not positive. I have had this new case for 2 or so month have jumped onto my own bed and haven't broken it. It's also worth mentioning that at ATT they mentioned something about a one-time exchange policy. one coworker to another which means I can't break it again within my one year time frame. D: This is a bummer because I went through 3 ipod touches in one year. Let's say I realized just how much water was in my life... And finally if you are still reading this thanks, I didn't mean to make it so lengthy. In conclusion, it's a good case, pricy but protects it well. It's dropped a few times and I haven't really thought twice, because it's "designed to survive life".. just don't jump on a hotel bed.

i would recommend getting a screen protector. the first week i got mine, my little brother decided to get a hold of it and chuck it across my room. i got a huge gash due to it landing face down and sliding on the hardwood floor. two days after that i dropped it from about 2.5 feet up and my glass cracked. i was so excited when i found out how expensive replacing it is. (ie: about $200-$400), i now have replaced my glass and put a screen protector on

Screen protectors don't protect from drops AFAIK. I got mine like 2 months ago and no protection used, not scratched yet. I used my captivate for over a year the same way and I only had ONE scratch because I was stupid enough to put it in the same pocket as my keys.
I've had mine for about 4 months now. No scratches/cracks. I handle my phones carefully, though. It always goes in my back pocket, away from other objects, and I take it out when I sit down.
Bought my phone the first day they were released.
It has a tiny 1/2" long scratch. Barely visible, but it's there. I accidentally put it in my pocket with car keys. Don't normally do that. But I didn't notice for about 30 minutes while it was in there and I was moving around a lot.
I removed my screen protector about 3 weeks ago because i hate how it easily get finger prints. I love the feel of the glass and it doesnt get any scratch even if i put it in my pocket a lot..

I was going to leave my skyrocket bare until I read all of the reports from other users about how the Gorilla Glass is less prone to break but can scratch very easily. So I had Ghost Armor at the mall put a protector on my screen. Two weeks later, my wife threw me a set of house keys while I was reading an email and they landed right on the screen. The protector took a beating. I had it replaced for $5 and the screen is still perfect.
It's a compromise. I'd rather have it bare, but you take a chance that an accident will happen.
The skyrocket doesn't have gorilla glass.
Mine is cool. It has a dedicated pocket though.

I've had my white Skyrocket since mid December and so far I don't have a mark on my screen. I can't stand screen protectors and within a day I had pushed the one in my case out. I do keep it in a pocket by itself though.
I bought it in December, and since then, I installed this case. It's pretty decent, no problems so far.
Mine has a dedicated pocket as well.. pretty good way to keep it safe. Owned mine since november, and it has one small scratch about 2 cm long that is only visible with the screen off and holding the phone as a certain angle.. not bad. Not as scratch resistant as my captivate though I'd say.
since early Dec. no screen protection. no scratches. never put it in my jeans pocket with anything other than paper stuff.

I jumped a good 9 foot tall fence on monday (i'm hispanic) and on the very top on the way over, my naked, unscreenprotected bab..skyrocket fell out of my athletic shorts pocket onto a concrete sidewalk hitting it usb port side first. I thought i was screwed but when i picked it up, not a scratch on the unshattered screen and the SR was all good to go besides quite a bit of scuffs on the bottom. see pics:

You just HAD to add the part where your hispanic and jumping a fence... didn't you.
I usually have my phone in a case and screen protector, but it feels so sleek without the case, so I took it off. <3
I want to take off the screen protector (removable/reusable/washable screen protector), but I know the second I do, I'll end up scratching it.

Screen protectors don't protect from drops AFAIK. I got mine like 2 months ago and no protection used, not scratched yet. I used my captivate for over a year the same way and I only had ONE scratch because I was stupid enough to put it in the same pocket as my keys.

im pretty sure i know that, but in my case it helped from the glass going everywhere. when i replaced my screen, i took my screensaver off and the glass went with it. so there you go, sorry i didnt put it in enough context.

first to break one!

so heres the story. it was on my kitchen table. my cat jumped up on the kitten table. the phone fell OFF the kitchen table. it landed on my wood flooring, and BAYYM. shattered like a christmas orniment. i can say the screen is fragile.. very different from my Galaxy S phones, which have been dropped numerous times, landed on concrete, and have dropped inside of a machine at work (lol). guess this is why samsung desides to make those "cheap feeling" light weight builds..
sigh. already ordered a replacement screen here

It also depends on where the phone fell, screen first w.e , and and the energy when it hit the ground. The must have been hard.

Ouch.
Yeah man that sucks. I dropped my Vivid the exact same way except it was outside on concrete. I am assuming you didn't have a screen protector on? Some screen protectors are said to spread the impact and protect it better.
Is it easy to install the replacement screen?
Also $45 isn't bad at all. My wife recently did the same thing to her Samsung Infuse and it cost $150.

I really wouldn't say "fragile" as much as I would say it just happened to land in a manner that would cause it to break.

wow at 45 bucks i might as well never use another screen protector again.
thats real cheap for a new screen
Correction, you are the SECOND person to break one. I beat you to it when I had it in my pocket when I went to the pool Sunday. It didn't enjoy swimming as much as I did.
bad kitty....
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think the LCD and the glass are fused together...

I believe the cover glass and LCD are laminated together, so you won't be able to separate them...

You weren't the first to break one...HTC was the first to break it when they released it.
This is relevant to my future interests. Did you successfully replace the screen? Is it true that the screen is laminated/glued to the LCD? How did you pry it apart? Can you post instructions on how you did it after the deed is complete?
Keep us in the loop!
Mine fell off fbe olyptical this morning. Bounced ariund. Cracked the blue HTC plastic case. Nothing physical to the phone at all. A faint rattle inside the phone that may have been there before. You can only here faintly when shaking.

If the rattle is around the camera area, don't worry about it, there's somewhere in a thread in here talking about it and if I remember correctly it has to do with the camera and is present in all of the devices.

Does it sound like its near the camera lens? Mine does it and its never been dropped.
It does appear to be by the camera. That makes me feel better!
Either way I still decided to add the best buy protection plan in case it were to happen again.
