AT&T Nexus S question - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since Best Buy is offering free Nexus S phones today with a contract I was thinking about picking one up. My question (and I've googled it, but been unable to find a definitive response) is whether or not sideloading apps works on the Nexus S with AT&T. I know they recently changed their policy regarding this, but I have been unable to find anything pertaining to this particular device.

yes this will work. ATT only locked down android phones that were distributed through ATT. The nexus S, does not come locked down like other ATT phones since google limits how much control carriers have with the nexus phones.

does the device is sim free?

does the nexus s in best buy is sim free or not ?
plz
i am talking about the 529$ deal
and if not is there any way to unlock it ?
sry for my english
The phone is unlocked no matter what version you buy. Best Buy worded their FAQ wrong at the beginning but I believe it's fixed now.
You can put an SIM in this device and have it work. Though if you are in the US, only T-mobile's 3g will work.
All Nexus S units are unlocked and will work with any GSM SIM. Best Buy was mistaken in claiming that some units are locked.
Is this still valid for the AT&T version of Nexus S sold on Best Buy Stores?
I am looking to buy the AT&T version of Nexus S on a next trip to the US in mid August 2011.
I will use the phone in Mexico, (my cell operator uses the same 3G frequencies as AT&T, now I got an AT&T Nexus One which works ok here.)
I am expecting to get, for $529.00+ USD, a SIM Unlocked Nexus One phone, that meaning: that I can put it any SIM from any other company (that uses the same AT&T frequencies, of course) and the phone should work fine.
ALSO, I am expecting a full "Google Experience" Android, loaded on the phone. That meaning, among other things, that for instance: HotSpot tethering should work as stated on the Google's Nexus S page. I do not want to buy a phone that a carrier has tinkered with its native Android features.
Your comments and advice on this are well appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
As far as similar free yes the nexus line comes unlocked except for nexus s 4g.

[Q] How to flash/change carriers with Fascinate

Hey Guys,
Back Story (don't really have to read if you want to skip)
I was at the bar with some coworkers and a new guy I work with was talking about how he had bought a Samsung Fascinate from a friend of his that had gotten his account frozen (it was on Verizon Wireless). The coworker wanted to transfer it over to Cricket Wireless (it is a crappy carrier in my area if you haven't heard of it) but they told him that they could do it but that he wouldn't get MMS. He ended up just buying a new one from Cricket and offered to sell me the one he could use for 50 bucks (it is like new in a box with everything) and told me if I couldn't do anything with it he would buy it back. This was kinda a win/win no brainer for me so of course I took him up on the offer.
He also did say that he could not get Verizon to activate it because there was a hold on the account that the phone currently belonged to.
The phone obviously will not work for me because I am on Sprint but from what I understand is that it is pretty much the same phone as the Captivate on AT&T. My dad uses AT&T for his carrier and has an iPhone but hates it and wants to go to an Android phone.
The questions:
1. Can I get the Samsung Fascinate from Verizon Wireless to work with AT&T?
2. Can I somehow remove whatever information that has linked this phone to being locked on Verizon so that I could sell it or activate it on another Verizon account if I want to sell it or give it to someone who does have Verizon?
3. Are there any other good options that I can do with this if neither of these will work?
I have no issues with rooting/flashing/messing with whatever is on this phone. I am a flashaholic on my Evo 4g and know that Samsung is a bit different then HTC when it comes to this type of thing but should have no issues figuring out the difference as far as rooting and such from other posts on this site. I just did not see anywhere that this question was already asked and know this is the absolute best place to come to get the correct answers for questions like these.
Thank you for any help you can give!!!
Does anyone have any ideas? Sorry for the bump but its been 2 days now and I am trying to figure out what to do. Thanks!

[Q] Will ATT unlimited dumbphone plan work on international smartphones??

I actually already a Meizu M9 (Android device) since I found it really cheap online($180) I knew the 3G wasn't going to work when I bought it which is fine. I only get EDGE speed which is fine for me since I only occasionally lookup stuff on google and EDGE speed is fine to do that. Also I have WiFi at both home and school and so I can use that to get me the faster speeds if I want.
What I really was wondering about was would I be forced to upgrade to the ATT smartphone plan? I have the $15unlmimted Medianet right now and since my phone only gets EDGE anyways I really don't want to have be upgraded. How does ATT detect the IEMI # on phones? The Meizu M9 is a Chinese branded phone and there are only a handful in the USA currently. Will they be able to tell I am using this phone and will they upgrade me?
Another thing I was wondering was that what are the typical APN codes for Android Smartphones? I am not sure if I have the right ones entered or not.
Here's a video showing you how to set up the APN's for unlocked phones.
Also i'm pretty sure you are ok with your data plan. AT&T has a list of IMEI (Identifiers) from all the phones they sell and if one shows up in their system as a smartphone then they change it but they wouldn't have yours
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Good question, but I think you should talk to ATT.
Can you let us know how you like the Meizu phone? I heard that they make decent phones, but I've never used one myself.
Follow up
Following up on this one. I am also considering buying an ebay M9 instead of a new mtk6575 based china clone. Would love to know if AT&T triggered the smartphone plan or not.
If I get no answer, then I'll come back when I get one of the two and let everyone else know my experience.

Q: Which S7 to buy for Verizon?

I placed my preorder for my Gold S7 Verizon from BestBuy a few days ago and am now wondering if I shouldn't cancel that and try getting one from another carrier? I want to to be able to flash custom roms but we all know how Verizon is... Are there any other variants I can use? Thanks!
I am in the same boat as you. I have the Note 4 with locked bootloader and no root. My wife is up for an upgrade and her line is up in May. I want to get her the S7 for her upgrade, but the way Verizon and Samsung are, it's unbearable, but for her, it's no big deal, she just uses it as is. I want to see the phone in person, hopefully tonight I can before I pre order the gold one for her. I don't think she will really utilize the edge features, still feels like another year or Note 6 away from better use.
Can anyone chime in?

T-Mobile and I believe Sprint are the only carriers which don't make it a point to lock bootloaders; or at least give you the option to unlock. Since the Qualcomm S7 is not carrier specific you should be able to bring one from any carrier and use it on Verizon. However, im not sure if Verizon lets you bring your own phone (unless it's an approved Verizon phone). The s7 will be the same for carriers, but i wouldnt be surprised if Verizon installed some proprietary software on their s7's to distinguish it from other carriers. Meaning that any s7 not purchased from them would be unable to register on their network.
Really not sure though. I just know how they normally operate as I used to be a customer before switching to TMo.

Looking at buying an unlocked Nexus 5

I have been looking at buying a Nexus 5 (I have Sprint) as a second phone to play with. I currently have a Nexus 6 atm, I have seen a few on ebay and some on Amazon that state unlocked, etc, etc..........
Has anyone here bought an unlocked phone and have it working on Sprint ? I am interested in getting a Nexus 5, but I'm leery that if I end up getting one it will not work with Sprint unless I get a specific Sprint carrier phone. The phone itself has the band capability for Sprint, so I'm not sure why a lot of the GSM unlocked version say it will not work with CDMA, etc etc.
Thanks
