So... Lets just say I found this somewhere...
megaupload.com/?d=NMUVLKSZ
It is the new Gmail update (Gmail 2.3.5) with the signature permissions removed. All the widgets and apps that used the Gmail content provider are now able to read it again.
Instructions:
1. Uninstall Gmail (I usually clear data then uninstall)
2. Uninstall any app that needs to connect to the content provider. (Any app that stopped working after the Gmail update.)
3. Reboot phone.
4. Install the APK from above. (Gmail 2.3.5 with normal permissions)
5. Install your apps back.
NOTE: Google did change around labels somewhat. So just an FYI if some apps still dont work. They may not be able to tell what is unread. But I am guessing most apps just went for the unread count which still should be there.
NOTE2: You have to uninstall the other apps because of the way android asks for permissions. It may only do it once... I am not positive.
NOTE3: Good luck... This is all reversible as you should not even need root to do it. (I have not tested an unrooted phone) But I dont see why it wouldnt work. I am not responsible for your bad judgement.
Let me know if this works for others. I have tested it on my app Labelert.com and it seems to be working after I made a slight update to the unread label.
P.S. Sorry I cant post direct links yet.
Follow me gsarrica on twitter.
I won't have time to try this for a while, but I thanked you for this. Here's a working link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NMUVLKSZ
Thanks.. when I get on my PC ill click ur 'thanks' button.

EDIT: I followed your instructions and BAMB everything is now working again! The only thing I had that pulled my gmail info was a little widget named 'Gmail Unread Count' the paid version.
I don't understand why Windozs Phone has an unread count tile, but a Google Android phone doesn't have anything like that. We have to rely on 3rd party developers, and now with this latest update, Google breaks it!
DAMN GOOGLE!
Glad to see it is working for you guys also. This at least gives us some time to find a real workaround.
fix for gmail 2.3.5 not working with 3rd party apps
correct me if i'm wrong but if you uninstall the google 2.3.5 update and roll back to previous version...backup and uninstall the 3rd party app (launcher pro) that was effected...reboot your device... and last , re-install and restore your 3rd party app ( launcher pro ) then in theory, the gmail widget and unread counter should be working!? Doesn't that seem correct?? Or has this already been tried out?

Yes if you roll back all will work fine. But if you want 2.3.5 you can go this route and be updated with everyone else. Why roll back when there is a working 2.3.5?
Thanks for posting this - I was intentionally not upgrading to 2.3.5 because it broke slidescreen, but it looks like SlideScreen might never be fixed http://larvalabs.com/blog/android/the-end-of-slidescreen/
Edit: Hmm it doesn't seem to let me install it on my EVO 4g with Gingerbread (HTC Stock ROM, rooted). I have the previous gmail version installed (2.3.4.1 i believe), and when I try to install the package, it just notifies me that it was unable to be installed
it worked for my rooted htc buzz. thanks man!

Sweet! Works like a charm
Thank you for posting this - I really like my "Missed It" and am glad to be able to use it again.
Is there a copy of Gmail 2.3.5.2 around like this?
EDIT: Never mind, I followed -> http://koxx3.wordpress.com/create-y...-allowing-content-sharing-with-external-apps/ and that worked.
This would be amazing except I have two issues:
1. I have no option to uninstall Gmail in Manage Apps.
2. If I try and install it anyway, it fails...
Any ideas or updated versions?

If your rooted you can uninstall with titanium back up. Then it should install apk. Also make sure your settings allow install from non-market sources.
Also should back up old gmail app first too.

I am absolutely stumped!
I restored my apps from Titanium, inc. AppBrain. This also restored my AppBrain data which was a bummer as Appbrain recognised it as the same phone, regardless of having upgraded to 2.1 forcing a clean install.
I then installed Fast Web Installer and it worked great, but I noticed it was still recognising as having had installed apps that I hadn't installed, and it thought my phone was 1.6 so kept getting annoying message on website. I uninstalled and reinstalled App Brain and it worked fine, but suddenly Fast Web Installer doesnt work. I get:
"There was an error sending the app to the phone. Please make sure you enabled it with the 'fast web installer' app and then please try again."
I have done everything I can think of, uninstalled both then reinstalled them, launched the FWI app multiple times, synced appbrain multiple times, all the above in multiple sequences, until I decided to delete my account, uninstall app brain, uninstall FWI, recreate my account, reinstall app brain, sync appbrain, install FWI, launched FWI, Synced App Brain, then crossed my fingers, but still got the same problem.
It's painfully annoying as its such an awesome thing
Has anyone else come across this error, and does anyone know a sollution? Im at pulling my hair out here
I have the same problem , its was working before but cant work these days
well, in the process of trying to fix this I accidently got my phone into a power cycle cycle, so gave it a clean install. It works now :S
but the facebook widget is now giving me grief. *When will it all enndddd??*
It's a bug from fast web installer. I emailed appbrain and now it's work. Should work for you too I guess.

Ah yes, I see that the market is now version 2.12 instead of the 2.09 in which firmware 2.1 gave us. That is quite unfortunate as that was a really useful tool

My problem is small but significant. a ways back i unistalled the gmail app while trying to uninstall a gmail popup app. But since then i have restored using odin to origional eclair, and everytime i use titanium to restore all my apps, gmail is gone. Does ANYONE know of an app, or better yet where i can get that same gmail app that i loved so much. Running 2.1... and patiently waiting

+1 on this.
If that were the case i would be grateful for the ease of that solution. But assuming we're talking about the android market, no, and just to make sure i searched gmail 2 seconds ago and it didn't show up. Most system apps aren't on the market.
Yes they are. Gmail, Youtube, Google Maps, etc. They're all on the market. I deleted Google Search once and downloaded it straight from the market.
Ok i'll give you that there are a few, but allshare, accounts and sync, alarms and clocks... etc.. the majority of these don't show up on the market. And If you are running a 2.2 custom rom that may be why it shows for you and not me. Just to prove i'm not making this up check the three attached screen shots. First is me searching gmail, and the next 3 are the results.... super lame
but on the upside if i'm ever i need of a guide to the korean subway system... i'll search "gmail" again
Here's your guide to the korean subway system...
HA ha, much appreciated... and it is even the same package name as the one i used to have, but when i try and istal it with app installer i get the dreaded "there is a problem parsing the package". Any more suggestions?

Figure out why tb is messing it up, restore one app at a time and check if gmail is working.
Its not tb its my fault and i admit it, at the beginning of my vibrant usage i installed tb to clean up bloatware, and so before i even made a backup i deleted gmail. And so i have nothing to restore to and aside from odinn back to stock, it won't let me reinstall.
Hi guys,
I flashed the 4.0.4 ROM for GSM (ported, not official), and no bug found.
but when I connect wifi, google start to sync app to my 9023.
the question is, it syncs lots of removed apps to my phone! some apps i tried before but removed later. and it dident sync some apps I really installed (never removed).
I googled it and found no answer
I have a root i9023GT with stock ics 4.0.3 before.
any idea? what will you do after flashing new ROM?
thanks in advance.
...what will you do when flashing new ROMs?
In market settings, uncheck auto install of updates.
In phone settings there's an entry to backup and restore your settings, wifi-passwords etc - disable that as well.
Thing is, those backups are a nice idea. Problem is Google saves everything, but doesn't let you delete old stuff. Whenever I use this feature I get settings restored from when I played with android on my old Xperia x1. And no, there's no solution for it now - had some lengthy mail-exchange with Google's support about it. Result: they're sorry and understand my problem. But...
Edit:
You can also try logging in to market on your PC and see if you can uninstall some old apps from there - don't bet on it though.
Hey, I don't have it with my nexus s on pics 4.0.4, but I do have a bug: if you look at running apps, they will all say 0.00B, except for settings. But I think its something of your personal settings..

thanks, I do like google backup very much, for I dont want to install every app when i have new ROM.
I googled it before i post but find a google group without answer.
I login to android market on PC but it seems there is no way to uninstall an app in it, only to install!
Is there a way to force auto install all my apps from the Play Store? It would be easier to have them all install and then use an Auto Uninstaller to remove the ones I don't really want than it is to download them all one by one.
I know sometimes when you flash a new rom or something, it takes over and auto downloads them all for you right away (Cyanogen for examples does that) but the ROM I'm on now never had that prompt come up.
Thanks for the help
You can use Titanium Backup Pro. Once all your apps are backed up with it you can batch install ALL of them (all apps together with the paid version, one by one with the free). It has other features tho to use other than that but its good for batch installing apps.

yea i know about titanium but i was hoping there was a way to do it from the play store rather than from backed up apks (that way we're at the same time using the most up to date versions of each app). like the way cyanogenmod automatically downloads every app you own from the play store right away the first time you open the play store.
You can use app2zip from the play store. It put whatever apps you want into a flashable zip so you can easily flash in cwm.

All of the stock-based ROMs I've used (currently using MikTouch 0.7 based on the OTA 1.63.531.2 ROM) have done this. As soon as I sign into my Google account, it begins syncing the contacts and downloading all my apps. That's why I typically let the phone sit for about 15-20 minutes after flashing a ROM and signing in.
Well it's all good. I already have pretty much everything installed one by one. I'm using Virtuous Inquistion and it never started to sync all my old apps, but it's all good. Everythings working great. And I'll back it all up with titanium for next time around.

I don't know how I did it but I think it was something like this. You just hit back up on the normal settings and google will restore it?
I've flashed my second ROM after I hit backup and all the apps started downloading from the PlayStore after the first log in. Does anyone know how to officially do this?
I know that this can be done using ADB (don't know how to use it but I know how to use the I9300 Int Tool Kit).
Going to hold off trying app2zip until the developer emails and confirms SuperNexus and Paranoid Android 4.1.2 on Siyah 1.7 is supported..It doesn't look to stable!
:highfive:
Btw, there is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531880 if you didn't know..
I was wondering about this as well: recently wiped and flashed a stock ROM and when I launched the Play Store for the first time, it began downloading all the apps that were in my account. I tapped 'cancel' as I didn't wan't all of them right away, then I had to install them one by one.
So it would be good if you could control this behaviour - for example to be able to check which apps you want downloaded and to install them automatically, yet in a bit more controlled manner.

I came to the conclusion that I'm okay with Titanium Backup for that purpose - bought the pro license a while ago - it can batch restore what you choose. It's slower than I expected at that, but at least you can leave the phone while the job runs.
for some reason this time all my apps auto installed.
shrugs. think i need to flash again, ill backup apps jsut in case, but hopefuly itl auto install again and i can delete the backup and only backup the data, not the apps.
Best way I have found to do this is to go to Settings > Backup & reset
Once there delete the existing account that exist.....
Wait a few minutes and it'll prompt you to put a backup account in....then reenter the same account.
This will prompt google to look at all your apps you currently own and the ones on your device and if not there will download it for you.
I discovered this when I factory reset my phone and when I restarted my phone it connected to a wi-fi network that required a sign-in process and as a result google attempted to download but was unable to.
Hope this helps.
Has anyone found any solution? Cause I have Titanium backup pro but I have read that it is not the best thing to restore apks... better reinstall them (especially for battery life)... There applist apps in market but they just store the link they don't download them automatically....
And I have apps on 2 seperate google accounts so just restoring during first sign in doesn't work well
Titanium backup is great. i use it. works great for installing apk's. but if you want to do it through the app store you have to let it run right when you first have the option. if you try to to it later youll have to do them all individualy

With free license, unfortunately, yeah, that's it, but PRO allows you to batch install and restore data for a chosen amount of apps. It also allows a creation of a recovery-flashable image, which is, from my experience, the fastest to deploy, but takes a while to create.

I've yet to try to see what happens if I detach apps from Play Store using TB. If it would prevent Play from rushing to download all the stuff (usually 100+ apps) when I first boot up a new install, it would be nice.

Thanks for this, I to very much dislike what Google's new vision is for talk.
No flash needed
Congratulations on getting Google Talk to work. I like your persistence.
I also agree that there are easier ways to do this.
I, too, get the App Not Installed message sometimes. And as was already stated, that's because it's a system app that you're trying to write over. Deleting it from System/App by removing the apk from within that directory is one way. If this was already mentioned, I apologize...but I did not see Titanium Backup mentioned. I use TB to remove system apps on the fly and, without rebooting, I can just install the Talk.apk just fine. IF, and only IF after uninstalling a system app and then attempting to install Talk that I should still get the App Not Installed message...then a simple reboot takes care of that. After rebooting, then install the desired apk, then if you must just reboot once again. But otherwise, TB is a good tool do to things on the fly without needing to re-flash.
In case, good job in getting it up and running.

Google needs to keep talk. I am an introvert and can't stand this forcing of 'hangouts'.
Google should be promoting plus, and talk integration with plus - let the hangouts occur as people choose.

There is an online status. The persons pic is grey or foggy like if offline. If they are online its clear and colorful.
Hangouts is still a work in progress. As is it already offers more than most especially if you are a G+ user and autobackup photos to G+. Eventually when sms is added , Hangouts will be the only messenger app you will need for any platform.

From using a backup of it from before or from another rom.

My apologies.....
I did not intend to suggest that I use Titanium Backup to install the talk.apk. I use TB to uninstall the system apk's only. Then I reboot. Then i can install Talk, then reboot, then launch the application. I flash so, so many ROMS and I reflash incremental updates by doing full wipes so many times that I can honestly tell you that using Titanium Backup in this method never, ever fails me. If I want to delete Hangouts, I uses TB to uninstall it. Then after that I'll use Solid Explorer to go looking for the old Google Talk apk and simply install that the normal, usual way. Sometimes you may get a message that the install did not work, but that doesn't mean anything. In those cases I just reboot.
You should be fine afterwards.
Please let me know if you have trouble.
Thanks.

Also, Darknites is correct. I can restore backups from within TB as well.

lol.....you'll be alright, my friend.
I flash so many ROMS and I do many re-wipes over and over again, that I try different sequences. So, for example, most ROMS come with Talk, right? Then, I forget to DETACH the talk.apk (using Titanium Backup) from the Google Play Store so that it won't automatically update to Hangouts. BUT, in the case if it does update (or if in the case you installed a ROM with Hangouts preinstalled), you should be able to remove Hangouts by uninstalling it from within Titanium Backup. Certainly it's not the only way, but it's one of the ways and the one single way I've always used to remove Hangouts. After removing Hangouts, even if you restarted the phone prior to attempting to install Talk.apk - there really should not be any reason that your phone hangs. If your phone doesn't boot after removing Hangouts, I'm willing to bet that's merely coincidental because Hangouts is not an integral part of the OS, it's just a social app and nothing more.
If you can't reboot, then restore your nandroid (I'm assuming that you created a nandroid before attempting to mess with any part of the system, correct?) and then try again.
Personally, if I removed Hangouts, I tried to install Talk.apk immediately after that. Sometimes it goes through, sometimes it does not. BUT, I always, always try at least. Then, only after evidence that the Talk.apk didn't install right away, then at that point I've rebooted the phone by long-pressing the power button and selecting to hard-reboot (not soft-reboot or hot-reboot). After the phone comes back on again, then I give Talk.apk another shot. It should go through.
Check back with me after you're done. I'm stepping out now, so I gotta walk away from my laptop, but I'll be back later on.
Best wishes.
Cheers.

Also, you can either tap on the Talk.apk to attempt to install it like that or you can "push" it into the System/App folder. I used to do that with Root Explorer, but now I do that with Solid Explorer. Why? Because with Root Explorer you'll have to fix permissions right after pushing any app straight into the System/App folder. With Solid Explorer, as this explorer pushes the app into System/App it automatically adjusts the permissions in real-time. Works for me 100% of the time. =) It's just one less step for me to have to micro-manage.
