Hey everyone,
So I was just thinking over what I would love to do with my Transformer/Dock combo and one thing came to mind.
I can connect to my office via VPN, access our company intranet and use various web based tools but there's one thing I'm missing: SQL access.
I use GUI tool that lets me have several DB connections open and run SQL in a window along with seeing the results of the query. I can drop or truncate tables, etc also.
So my question is: Does anything like that exist for Android and more specifically, Honeycomb so there's a bigger screen?

How about phpMyAdmin or similar installed on one of the SQL servers. Or using remote desktop/VNC to remote control a PC with the MS SQL tools on it.

Well... it would be useful in some scenarios
Id put 50euro in for someone to get them working. Means a lot of my Web Apps could work off like and then I just have sync page to save on roaming chargess.

Do folks really need a reason why?
I think the answer is, 'cause it would be cool!
Having the ability to test database queries
would be great for students like me.
Imagine while in the bus, or train, or waiting at the doctors and having the ability to create tables and all!

How are you going to access the applications deployed on the web server in your phone? I dont think there is a way to get static IP for phones. This is a strange thread.
I was thinking something like bluetooth PAN, Celio Redfly or the phone itself.
But also I am thinking the wiki should be mirrored on the web so that the access to the wiki is not dependent on the 3G connexion. Seems to be doable with mysql, at least from the phone mysql db to the webserver mysql db. I guess I'd need sthg to mirror data from the webserver to the phone, maybe OpenVPN or sthg else with mysql I don't know ...

Total Commander (free for smartphones/PocketPC/handhelds) has inbuild FTP.
I was wondering if there was any software for either, home automation or remote desktop connection. I've searched for home automation and can't seem to find a definitive answer. As far as remote pc goes... I want to be able to see and access all the files on my laptop, from my phone.
you could host a ftp server on your laptop
^ would that allow me to access all .doc and .jpeg files... oh and also music files as well... those are the only extentions i'm really interested in accessing.

absolutly, I am using guildFTPd(freeware) to host. However I can't use TotalCommander to see the dir/file structure, I have to use FTPview. There are other free ftp servers as well (FTPShell Server). Just make sure you use strong security, I do get occasional people/bots trying to getting in the server.
There are also applications like RemoteAdmin, PCAnywhere, VNC viewer to take control of your remote machine ... but if all you want is to access files the FTP approach is better performance wise.
is there some sort of LogMeIn hamachi client for WinMo? I know for PC's it puts two computers on the "same network". that might work, if there is...
You could also try running Orb (free) on your laptop if you want to be able to access files remotely. Allows for all media files specifically but also has a built in file browser.
Also allows for streaming video etc (can be great if you've got a TV capture card on your laptop at home and you want to watch TV from a remote location)

Also, there exists a mobile version of remote desktop connection. Don't know how to get it, though, as it was already cooked into the rom i'm using (PROven ROM 2.4 21018 UNPROTECTED by qsqa) .
You can both remotely control a PC and access file shares with features built into Windows Mobile.
To control a PC
I have successfully used Remote Desktop Mobile on my Fuze (standard ROM) to control my home PC. My home PC is Windows XP Professional (XP Home does not include the RD server). It works great considering the screen size. This solution is much simpler than installing 3rd-party software on both the phone and the PC.
To access files on a PC
I have used File Explorer Menu | Go To | Open Path | New Path to access file shares. I haven't done this a lot but it seems to work fine. Configuring a share is much simpler than installing and configuing an FTP server. BTW, Windows XP Professional includes an FTP server.
To use either of these features you must have an appropriate network path from your phone to the PC. The easiest way is to use your home wireless network. Then you only need to worry about the software firewall on your PC.
If you use the provider's network, you must properly configure all firewalls to allow appropriate ports, and configure your router to port-forward appropriate ports to the PC. You must also either (1) have a static IP for your home network interface, (2) track your dynamic IP address as it changes, or (3) use a service that maps a host name to your dynamic IP and automatically tracks changes. It might be easier just to store files on a web site, then you don't need to even keep the PC turned on.

I have my own server at home, in order to have access to my files outside my home. This is very convenient.
I would like to have an online database (with forms like you can have with MS Access, but Online) so that I can organize my information (foreign language vocabulary, DVD list, todo list, ...). I can install it on my server, and I would like it to be easily accessible from my PocketPC (via Internet, or even better via an specific application on the PocketPC ).
Do you have some suggest for an existing application offering this ?
I have good knowledge (I have already worked with .NET at work).

I don't know about you guys, but as an engineering student I use a lot Latex to produce documents (articles, presentation, reports, etc...). However seems that a good app to latex edition is lacking in the android world. The hard time to deal with a latex document is having a high number of files and sub-files, and need to be compiled in order to get the final result, a pdf ou dvi file.
Testing alternatives, I found that the compile part is easy, since, as done in the iOS, the best alternative to the 1GB program needed is a remote compilation in a server. Some schools have it, some web applications already use it, and even verbetex (the only LaTex app, besides its limitations) use this approach. For instance I leave you a great project, but a little bit stoped this days..

The main limitations all the apps and web-service present is file manipulation and text editing. Neither can be good in both, wich is essential. The project I showed could be great if, besides google doc integration (allowing cooperation), I could easily manage the file as its possible in http://www.scribtex.com/. However, the best integration in file manager would be using dropbox, where easily one can add files from desktop, or web browser, editing in normal Latex tools, or in the fly in our tablet or webservice.
Besides a webservice seams a good alternative in desktop, android browser is still not so easy to use. So a dedicated interface, wich allows multiples tabs, to edit multiple files, syntax highlighting, files manipulation with integration and sincronization with dropbox, and some other text edition addons with the possible to online compilation in a remote server would be a very nice app for our android, and mostly for TF since it have a dock.
I don't have for now programming knowledge to promote this type of project. Figuring current available apps using dropbox, remote servers, and text manipulation, I assume necessary tools are available, so I let year a challenge to the brilliant guys in XDA, offering me to test, and when finished to buy it (if it would be a generic code editor for differente languages, allow dropbox and ftp integration, for sure that 10 bucks or more would be a good price for start).

I also happen to be a student who regularly use LaTeX for academic purposes. In my opinion, the best solution that exists now on the Transformer is using Vim for editing the tex files, and using sftp to upload it to a server and then ssh to compile it. The later parts can be put into one shell script, and can be executed within vim each time you want to compile the file that you are editing.
As to the editor itself, vim is exactly what I use on my regular laptop for LaTeX editing. I can hardly think of any editor better suited for the job (though some might suggest emacs, but that is another story). Someone has compiled vim for android and you can find it by googling "vim android". I have tried it myself and found it quite usable with the dock. You can even use the excellent vim-latex plugin to help you simplify the editing of latex files.
Vim is too hardcore for me I have it already setup, but not all latex guys like to do it in the terminal

No, not possible; but you can try DFT Bluetooth file transfer if you have a fully unlocked or rooted phone and see if that works. Currently there is no way of doing what you are asking via email, MMS or Wifi.

Root Webserver (see my sig) allows easily taking files off (or putting them on) a Windows phone via WiFi. It's not the most elegant approach, but it's easy to use.
There has been talk of somebody implementing SMB (the network protocol that is used for Windows networking) using the sockets APIs in WP7, but I'm not even sure the official APIs are complete enough and even if they are, it'll be quite a bit of work to implement (the SAMBA project has been trying on Linux for years, and is only mostly there).
I'm quite certain it's possible to attach arbitrary files to email, but nobody has found the way *yet* so that's not currently possible. Also, the email client isn't going to let you save attachments to arbitrary locations, because it's designed to work with the very low permissions of the OS by default.
