[Q] What do I need to get Heimdall to work? (Mac) - Samsung Infuse 4G

I have tried numerous times to get it to flash to my phone. Thankfully I don't need it yet but as of now I have no backup plan if I ever had to return to stock. The best I have got is "Failed to detect compatible device."
If someone would be kind enough to, at the least, give me a checklist or links to what all I need to get this thing running I'd really appreciate it.
Running Mac OS X Lion if it helps.

i dont know about the mac version but there should be a readme in there for installation. also i think the mac needs codeless kext installed. should be outlined in the readme but couldnt tell you for sure.

I followed the instructions as best as I could understand. The UI pops up but refuses to flash or even recognize my phone.

Since you have a mac it would be a lot easier for you to flash a
clockworkmod type custom rom.
You must have clockworkmod recovery to be able to do this.
If you are running stock rom and already have clockworkmod
recovery in your phone then then you can BACKUP your stock
rom with clockworkmod and then flash a new custom rom
as long as its a clockworkmod rom zipfile.
Most all of these custom roms you see here on xda are all
clockworkmod types (zipfiles) which do NOT need ODIN
or Heimdall at all.
But you do need to have a usb card reader if your your
computer is not reconizing your samsung phone as an external
USB drive.
If your Mac computer does reconize your phone as a external
USB device then you do not need to remove the microSD card
and you do not need a card reader.
I am sure you know how to use a usb card reader so I will not
go into that now.
Here is the link to the most popular custom rom for Infuse
which is the type you need. (clockworkmod flash)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195571
Follow the easy step by step instructions to a "T" if you
don't want to start all over and have to do it again.

Thanks everyone.
My main concern is that I'm running Gingerbread v2 b2. When we get the official bootloaders will I need to flash through Odin/Heimdall? Otherwise I'm fine.

You are already on a rooted rom. Just get sgs lernel flasher and flash a "rainbow fix kernel." But id try to get heimdall working. it is super easy on linux. I love the debian package system.
If it doesnt see the device it sounds like an issue with that "codeless kext" which is described as being like a driver. that is unless samsung dropped the ball on the boot loaders again. the bootloaders in the odin oneclick packages for the galaxy s would prevent the device from being visable on a mac in download mode. later versions had this fixed. if i had a mac id help. i think the mac is a great system but i just dont know enough about your problem.
there is always the bootcamp or virtual machine options. if you need windows maybe i can help out if you pm me. or yu can do a quick install of mint or ubuntu which is not only more similar to mac than windows but with no need for drivers and the debian packages is easier to install heimdall on than odin is in windows.
or maybe you can contact the developers of heimdall.

what version of heimdall did you download? i ask because it seems 1.3 wants a firmware.xml file that specifies compatible devices, could be an issue of it looking for that file. i still use v1.1.1, i just updated to 1.3 but dislike it and am going back, will see if 1.2 is compatable with the 1.1.1 frontend because it doesnt appear to have a frontend package.
edit:
yes v1.2.0 comandline seems to work with 1.1.1 frontend, install 1.1.1 and then you may upgrade to 1.2 (atleast that's how it works under linux)

Ok so I can use VMWare to load another OS on my Mac.
Any recommended distros to use this Debian package? So many flavors of Linux.
Lastly, can you please link me to past versions of Heimdall? I can only find the most recent.

most use ubuntu. debian packages but there own repositories that are less likely to provide unstable updates to break your system.

Captivate and a Hackintosh

Hey guys...I have a spare PC that I just converted to a Hackintosh. Everything went flawless with the install of OSX, but when I plug my Captivate in, it forces OSX to tell me I need to power it off and power it back on. I've tried this multiple times. I've even set the phone to have USB debugging on, and the same problem continues. Anyone have a suggestion?
Hmmmm
Ive never herd of this problem. It could be because its a hackintosh. I have a macbook pro and the captivate connects and does everything perfect. If you used a custom rom on the phone that can be an issue. It could be a bad flash. If you have stock then im not sure what the problem could be.
Sorry hope you fix this problem!
Probably not going to be much help but I have a hackintosh and my phone and PC play nice together
OSX is telling you the phone needs to be rebooted? Am I understanding that right? I can fiddle around and see if some settings make mine do the same thing
Are you using a pure vanilla untouched OS X build, or one of those crappy thrown together modded kernel deals.
Used to triple boot Windows, Linux, and OS X on my laptop before it fell off a table.
if you're running a vanilla build then it should work but you probably aren't. what version of OSX and what distro are you using? I suggest posting over at insanelymac since this is most likely a hackintosh issue.
How did you make your hackintosh? Feel free to PM me.

google can be your best friend.
I have no PC. I use XP with Parallels and Bootcamp, and It still is very finicky. Never had a Hackintoch but the newer Macs are Intel. Not sure where I'm going with this, but, yeah.
i dont have any problems with my captivate and my hackintosh. using the vanilla kernel.
Thanks for all the replies everyone. Here's the rundown:
I installed OSX directly following this guide:
http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/04/iboot-multibeast-install-mac-os-x-on.html
I am running Cognition 3.04 on my phone. And the minute I plug the phone into USB, this is what I see on the screen. This is not my computer, but it's an image I found on google images, but that's the exact error. I guess it's a kernel panic.

Doesn't matter if I have USB debugging on, or not. I've pretty much exhausted everything I can think of at this point, unless someone else has a suggestion. On my Windows computer, the phone is seen just fine btw...not sure what the problem could be.

"Telling me to reboot" and "kernel panic" are two very different things.
Now it's definitely a problem for these guys:

Yeah, I posted a thread right on TonyMac's website too and they had no clue as to why that happened. Thanks for the link Mike. I'll check it out with them and see what they suggest.
this may be related
From the Heimdall ( http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/ ) FAQ:
What platforms does Heimdall run on?
Linux, OS X and Windows (XP, Vista, 7 etc.)
Although Heimdall runs on OS X all Galaxy S devices tested thus far contain a bug in the secondary boot loader that prevents the device registering itself with OS X. This may change if Samsung release an updated secondary boot loader.
Update: Samsung have released an updated secondary bootloader that corrects the issue. The correct bootloader is included in the official Froyo release. Obviously you have to get Froyo on your device somehow, but from then on it’s smooth sailing.
Note: Keep in mind if the version of Froyo you’re running is not official then the updated Sbl.bin may not have been included.
Hrm, you may have something there. I'll flash back to stock tonight and see if the Captivate works after that.

[Q] Noob rooting question [G2x]

Hey guys, I know I'm a noob and I apologize in advance if this question has been answered.
I'm trying to root my G2x with SuperOneClick. I have a Mac and I'm running VMware with Windows 7. I'm following the directions on this page (starting in debug mode, drivers installed):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
and it gets hung up on step 6. I read a little more and turned my debug mode off and on, and then the process completes. It looks like it completes step 7, but then when it is "Remounting /system with read/write access"...it says "/mount: operation not permitted. FAILED"
Also----I have tried the other method with CWM but windows 7 does not give me the option to install the drivers for the APX mode (when I go to the device properties, install driver is disabled)
I really just want to root my phone the easiest way possible. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!! (especially if it can get me rooted with SOC). Thanks!

That's my issue with SuperOneClick.
With ClockWorkMod, I have a different problem. First, can it be done on a Mac without running Windows? If not, I have tried running it on my Windows 7 VMware build, and it will not allow me to install the drivers. When I boot my phone in APX mode, I right click on the device and get to device properties, it has install driver disabled (greyed-out) and I don't know what to do.
Again, thanks for the advice. I know I'm a noob but I really appreciate your help guys!!!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8699742&postcount=537
I'm having a little trouble with the instructions. Namely, when I'm entering
apt-get install lib32ncurses5
apt-get install lib32stdc++
apt-get install libmono-winforms2.0-cil
Terminal says they can't be found, and I can't find these in the downloaded SOC directory either. I'm thinking this is the problem because it keeps asking me if I'm using version 2.0. Am I doing something wrong?
______
Also, I know you said not to use VM, but I don't have a PC so I'm trying everything I can think of. Here is the result when I'm running SOC on my VM.
To get to this point, it actually stops on Step 5/6 and goes unresponsive. At that point, the only thing I have done to make it move was to toggle USB debugging off and on (I've left it on that step for 20-30 minutes and nothing happens if I don't toggle it).
Then it says failed. I'm hoping by reading the results you might be able to figure out what's going on?
______
One more question---is there anyway to do CWM on the Mac? I have only found instructions for the PC on the forums. Maybe I'm missing it. I have noticed on the CWM instructions it says:
"Install APX Windows driver from APX folder.
(Windows x86 and x64 O/S Drivers):
****If you are running VmWare kill it.****"
I don't understand what it is asking me to kill.
Again, thanks a lot for your time and consideration. I really appreciate it, and if I didn't have a dropbox account I would definitely sign up with your referral. Hope you're having a nice weekend.
Food you check the sticky in the dev section? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099281
Thanks everyone!!!! What ended up working was this:
Flashing CWM with a Linux Virtualbox (after updating the CWM files that were existing already in the Virtualbox).
Then I downloaded the root and put it on my SD card, and rooted via CWM on my G2X. Finally after too many hours for something so "simple" I am finished. Thank you everyone who gave their input!! It was very helpful. I hope that someday I can return the favor!

oh my god!you released this, the same vday that i try to put ubuntu on transwformer....i have windows and this,is a big news!hi have a question--ubuntu.img that is HERE...is ok?i put it in main folder?and system.img, you mean the system.img of a nvflashable rom like prime or revolver and i should put it also in main folder?
Hi there,
Sounds like a great tool and im very interested. Can you dual boot with ubuntu and the current rom?
Does it replace CWM ?
Is thereanything to prepare, before installing etc?
I was also wondering if this just completely wipes the tablet and puts only ubuntu or whether it can dual boot. Dual boot would be awesome.
Sorry should of been clearer it uses prime and it is dualboot. Ubuntu is primary. The ubuntu img is from lilstevies thread. Ill update the original post with links.
Can you make an option so that prime is the default and android is secondary?
Where do I get the .imgs? Could've at least linked to them.
The system.img file is a nvflashable rom like prime. The ubuntu img is from lilstevie's thread "Ubuntu on the Transformer". As for the Dual-boot with android as default it will be on my next release. Its a long story on this release. I had alot of options for this release, but it would take alot longer to get it all finished. So i released this mini-version just to let people play around with a little bit. My next version with have a bunch of options along with a GUI interface for ADB and NVFlash.
So will this only work on devices with SBK1?

Anyone that has used the tool i would like some input if its working for you or if you are having any problems with it.

Hmm looks like mine is an sbk3
What would have happened if i had tried to flash this ?
hmm maybe i've been out of the loop for the past few month but what is SBK1/2/3 ?
also, i'm already running revolver, would rather keep this intead of prime... is there anyway of installing this without loosing all the data on my revolver install and keeping revolver?
i wait your next release, with android how primary OS.....
So, what if we did a nandroid on our current rom and pulled the system.img from the backup, would that work?

where does this SBKv3 come from? I have not heard of devices with yet another SBK, unless of course you are referring to the SL101 or TF101G, but those devices wouldn't be SBKv3, they would be SBKv1 for those devices, the nonclementure for the SBKs are TF101 SBKv1 (The currently known key) and SBKv2, the definition of them is relative to the device itself, as that is key v1 and key v2 for the TF101
sorry i might be wrong. I did a search and found a thread that said it could be sbk3 ...

I would definitely do that except I only have 9GB free on my SSD. When I get a hard drive to replace the optical drive on this one I'm getting Win7 for a dual boot setup, but when you only have 80GB.... Gotta have room for music and porn, ya know? lol
I'm assuming you mean Gingerbread 2.3.6? Cause under About Phone it shows 2.3.5....
Yes gingerbread 2.3.5 should have worked on that. There was a 2.3.6 update which is also gingerbread that wont work with the acs easy root. There is a program called heimdall which is like odin but for osx read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265....
And go here for the files to flash on heimdall. Once u have it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265 and lastly for futre refrence please post questions in the q&a section
Thanks for your help. I'm trying the ODIN method outline in this thread but using Heimdall instead. When I try to browse for the Recovery.tar to flash, Heimdall tells me that I need a firmware.xml file that is missing from Recovery.tar.
Do you know what I need to get this .xml file, or does someone have a Recovery.tar with the proper .xml in it already?
Actually you use heimdall to flash individual files not the entire tar so go here watch this its a how to use heimdal video http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=/&gl=US#/watch?v=6TgyaUbjcm4
I posted a solution in another thread about rooting from a Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20440129#post20440129
Basically you need to modify the Linux-Mac.sh shell script in the Skyrocket Easy Root package.
You need to add a line to the script, "$adb wait-for-device". It goes after the "echo 'Wait for phone to reconnect...'" line, inserting as follows:
Code:
echo "Wait for phone to reconnect..."
$adb wait-for-device
$adb remount
It worked fine for me, but I don't take any responsibility for it.

OSX is an excellent OS. I use it all the time, also have a dual boot Win7/Ubuntu machine. But I prefer OSX as my daily machine.

Description
GlassROM Young N is a ROM (the first one, if I am not in error) for the Samsung Galaxy Young GT-S6310N (not S6310!, but the N variant). I was horrified by this low-end device, because there were no custom ROMs for it, and S6310 ROMs didn't work, I just ended up re-flashing the original firmware after a boot loop. So, here it is, the first ROM for this device, based on the Samsung 4.1.2 official AMJ1 firmware. It is de-bloated (which means no software besides what you want), has Trebuchet Launcher instead of TouchWiz Home, and I also remved most Google Apps (except for Play Store), because you can install them if you want, from Google Play.
This new thread for GlassROM Young N was made as a pre-release. The files here released, are an installer of the ROM Patch. This means you need to flash the stock ROM (4.1.2 AMJ1) via ODIN or Heimdall. Also, you must flash CWM (get it here: https://www.mediafire.com/?nwcnwu1yu92ym9w) via ODIN/Heimdall too. Then, you must boot up the stock firmware and enable USB Debugging. FInally, reboot to recovery, go to Mounts and Mount /system . Finally, connect the phone to the computer and run the script.
The original script was made for Unix-like OSes which use Bash Shell (like Linux and Mac). But I have made a Windows version too, available on the project page.

I am developing an OTA Installer and OTA Updater for this ROM!
Stay tuned!
OTA Updater going to tests!
I've done everything, recovery, clean install, usb debugging enable, I get a usb device not install in device manager for SAMSUNG_android when a get in recovery and put usb in phone. The solution?
I tried on all sorts samsung drivers, and even KIES and nothing.
Thanks in advance.
Windows script is useless, several errors, bricked the phone. Needed to flash again. Do not upload until you test it.
Could you provide a screenshot of the error? Does ADB say anything? At the moment, I can only test the Linux/Mac OS/*nix version. You could try using it btw.

I see. Look, this isn't a Google Play app review. This is a development thread. You seem like you don't understand it, but doing this takes time. Here, useful feedback is the only one I would like to receive. Useless feedback like yours wont help development at all.

Since I do not know linux, I can not use it. I have tried Ubuntu live dvd, but it does not run the script without adb.

Use the live dvd or usb, then install adb from the terminal (write adb, it should tell you what to do to install it), and use the installer. Note th\g yoj must be on recovery when running the script.
Update: 0.1.1 bugfixing update was released. 0.2 is expected to use OTA updating via our app.
Working on the OTA Updater
As you can see in the screenshot, the OTA Updater app will be available in the next updater. It is almost finished, now I have to start working on actual flashable updates.

install.sh opens in text editor.
You have to change it's permissions to executable.
Open the Terminal, and do:
chmod u=rwx install.sh
Then type
./install.sh
And that's it.
error
