[Q] adhoc wpa_supplicant - HTC Sensation

Hi at all guys! I have a question... i've tried to use the modified wpa_supplicant for Desire S (here in the development area)... adhoc networks and udp broadcasting works fine but the wifi doesn't search any network...
can anybody modify it for the community?
the original wpa_supplicant is here: http://db.tt/UremWjC

Ok just so we are on the same page. You have installed a modified wpa_supplicant file onto the sensation right? And you say ad-hoc networks are working fine, but it doesn't search any networks...
For clarification, what are you trying to accomplish?
What do you mean by ad-hoc networks works fine?
Do the ad-hoc networks show up in the network list?
Off the top of my head I'd suggest looking at the permissions for the wpa_supplicant file you can use root explorer if you have it its really easy. All you do is first turn off wifi on the phone then navigate to system/bin and remount the folder as R/W then long hold on the wpa_supplicant file and choose permissions then check/tick all the boxes in the first two columns and the first 2 in the last column. Then all you have to do is restart wifi and it should have the correct permissions.

Thank you for your reply... i'm very happy
in my older Desire HD the wpa_supplicant edited for the Desire S worked very fine... about the permissions, i ever set the "original" permissions.... with my sensation and that wpa_supplicant i can see adhoc network and i can connect with it... if i use Samba app i can access to my memory not only by \\IP but with \\hostname (i need this feature)... The problem is: i turn on the wifi in my sensation when i'm at home, it searches the my home wifi network and try to connect... the connection is established... i go to work... my phone doesn't connect to my work wifi network... if i try to push "search" button it doesn't see the wifi network... i should turno off and on... "in a loop"... Do you understand this?

That is indeed odd.
Does it only happen at your work?
Have you checked the permissions?

No, viceversa too... I've tried with my portable hotspot and it's the same...
the wpa_supplicant doesn't work good on Sensation...
I need somebody that edit original wpa_supplicant of htc sensation with adhoc and udp broadcast support...

Any news, bad or good?

Mobile hostpot is to use the desire's wifi as a hotspot for connecting *other* devices to use the 2g/3g network.
This is for connecting the desire to a adhoc network like the wifi network on your laptop. Some laptop wifi cards for example can set them selves into AP mode so they are a true access point and the desire can connect to it, however most cards don't support that mode (well mine doesn't anyhow) so you need to create a ad-hoc network on your laptop that ultimately routes out to the internet via your wired network connection. This is where the desire cannot connect to that ad-hoc network without this 'hack'.
When you are roaming this is invaluable with extortionate roaming data charges so this is a way to reuse your wired connection on your laptop as a gateway for your desire. It's in effect a reverse hotspot.
Wonderful!!!!!
Finally!!!!I'm searching it from a lot of time!!!!
Now all works wonderful!!!
Thanks a lot to all!!

I noticed that the binary in the link above was for an older wpa_supplicant (0.5.11) and Desire and the new froyo's are on 0.6.10 of wpa_supplicant so i repatched and compiled.
For those with the writeable /system hack, just disable wifi, push this on your /system/bin and reenable wifi. Else push this at recovery time
Code:
adb push wpa_supplicant /system/bin/
I also changed the "(*)" prefix for adhoc networks as i didn't like the look of the wifi list so now it's changed to "(adhoc)" suffix for adhoc networks it sees.
Diff and binary attached below.

Strange, then this must be a generic bug with ad-hoc networks (i.e. not something this patch/hack has introduced) so you will see the same results if you edit the wpa_supplicant.conf files manually correct ? It looks from this that adhoc supports only open or WEP encrypted network (in wifi tether too you can only use WEP). See the thread here:

Flash the zip provided in the thread, and google 'windows setting up adhoc network'
Ensure not to choose WPA2-AES key for the password, but a WEP password. Then select wifi networks on your phone and choose your network and put in the password you selected.
For linux it's easy too. First disable wifi scanning on your applet in the top right as you want to disable it as a client and make it as a server. So as root do this (assuming your wireless interface is called wlan0) and want to create a network on 10.0.0.x
Code:
DEV=wlan0
iptables -t nat -D POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE
echo 1 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
ifconfig $DEV down
iwconfig $DEV essid 'Laptop WiFi'
iwconfig $DEV mode ad-hoc
iwconfig $DEV key s:mykey
ifconfig $DEV 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0
/usr/sbin/dnsmasq --dhcp-range=10.0.0.2,10.0.0.10 -x /tmp/dnsmasq-$DEV.pid -i $DEV
Thank you very much for this hack, Daveba! Don't really need this as of now, but could be handy in the future. One, probably silly question, does it have any negative impact when connecting to a standard Wi-Fi router, or it just provides additional functionality?
Hopefully we can see this included in various Roms soon.
Good day!

Well please don't credit me with the work. As noted in the first post, the initial patch was released for an older version of wpa_supplicant. I've just updated it for wpa_supplicant 6 and changed some aesthetics on the wifi list page on the phone. Remember again this is a hack and should really be inherently supported by the OS. I suggest people read issue 82 and star the issue for greater visibility.
I would like to know if anyone sees any negative impact with this hack. The only thing i see is that the phone doesn't automatically disconnect from the ad-hoc network if i take it down on my laptop or i move away from the signal range. It will drain the battery if not manually disconnected. This is a small 'bug' for what (in my opinion) is such a hugely important function. Hell even the iphone, the nokia E71, etc can do this out of the box and i get laughed at at work (until now).

[Q] SSH Droid used on a rooted DHD does not work anymore

Hello there!
Thanks to the many useful threads on this forum, I successfully rooted my Desire HD and implemented ad-hoc Wi-Fi support (in order to control my AR-Drone).
Everything went well so far, since I can connect to "non ad-hoc" networks as well as ad-hoc ones.
But I find myself stuck with a problem which I do not know where to start to try and solve it.
See, I think this has to do with the wpa_supplicant (and not wpa_supplicant.conf) file I modified using >this one<, which is the one that allowed me to detect ad-hoc networks.
I used the recent one (the "-v2" file in the thread) and since ad-hoc works fine now, I assume it has been successfully placed into the /system/bin directory.
The problem is, before this manipulation I could SSH my DHD using the very useful SSHDroid, but now, I just can't connect to my phone using SSH anymore, and I do not get why since I can connect from my phone to the Internet using my home's Wi-Fi network, and SSHDroid does not monitor anything wrong and seems to be correctly launching.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling SSHDroid but the result is the same.
Where should I start to investigate?
Thanks a lot!

I can tell you that my Transformer connects perfectly to the mobile hotspots on both my HTC Desire and Galaxy Tab.
Does your WiFi Router application create a real hotspot, or is it an adhoc network? If it is adhoc, it probably won't work out of the box, and I think you'd need to be rooted in order to make the necessary changes.
Regards,
Dave
Hi Dave,
I can't actually distinguish between the two (real hotspot vs adhoc network), but I did start a Desire HD rom on my HD2, then started the WiFi Hotspot app that comes with it.... and surprise, surprise it works....
Good catch and thanks this will have to do until I figure out what to do with the WinMobile WiFi router.

Hi there,
Does usb tethering work? Well, for sure, the native usb tethering won't work, because there are no drivers, but is there an app to make it work? (@HD2 with DHD Rom)

I don't know, there is no usb on the tablet only on the keyboard (which I don't have). As far as I can see in the Adnroid settings "usb tethering" is available though.
Hope this helps,

Hi Guys,
Did you work out the original problem with the Wi-Fi router on the HTC HD2 and the Asus Transformer, im using the exact same combo and they will not see eachother (Wi-Fi) No Wi-Fi at work cos of Security but now i dont have comms to my tablet
Thanx Guys
I achieved this by using the Wifi Tether application, it requires root on the phone (Android phone here, sorry). The biggest problem with mobile-to-wifi internet is that most applications will create ad-hoc Wifi networks, as opposed to hotspots. Transformer with stock software will not even see an ad-hoc network, I imagine this is your issue, too. There two options here:
1) if you want to root the Transformer, it is possible to make it see an ad-hoc version, but changing one of the configuration files.
2) you can use Bluetooth tether instead of Wifi, for most situations it will do the trick. No need to root the TF then.
See this thread for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074317&page=1 (it is about droids, but may help anyway).
I'm also using the Wifi Tether app that came with MDJ ROM for HD2 and it works great... too bad the small battery on the HD2
I havea motorola Atrix,i can tether using barnacle a rooted app, stock mobil hotspot, and through blue tooth. Havent had an issue yet.
Same problem here HD2 (WinMo6.5) + Transformer
I don't want root my transformer (yet)

You don't have to root your transformer to use a mobile hotspot (takinga 3g signal and converting it into a wi-fi router)
If you have any rooted Android phone, you just need to install either Baranacle, Wireless Tether, or Open Garden. All are root-only apps, and you sometimes have to try each to get it to work. At first only open garden worked, wireless tether/barancle didn't. It's very doable though.

You do have to root your transformer for barnacle.
Barnacle creates an ad-hoc connection which the transformer won't see without first rooting and replacing the wpa_supplicant file. Most wifi tether applications do the same thing.

I had the same issue until I tried the settings below. I have a EVO 4G so I don't know if the HD2 is anything like it but if it is then you can try these:
Go into setting
Go into wireless and networks
Go into Hotspot Settings
Go to Menu and click on Advanced
Select LAN settings
Click on DHCP
After that you should be able to connect. If not then your setup is different then mine and won't work. It's worth a try though.
not much helpfull I guess but works fine on my xperia arc stock rom unrooted android 2.3 so no need to use apps at all

[Q] WiFi Tether Help

I'm trying to set-up a WiFi hotspot on my X10mini pro, I have root access and have tryed opengarden + barnical Tether apps from the market.
Barnical seems to work ok until I search for the SSID, it can't be found.
Opengarden comes with an error saying I am missing drivers or something.
Can anyone advise an app or a way through a terminal emulator to fix this and get the WiFi working as a tether.
Thanks,

Verify in your router wifi option if you have SSID visible.
Barnacle don't give you the option to Show/Hide SSID
I have scanned for it on both mine and my friend HTC, I have even tryed matching IP/Gateway settings, But it just dosnt seem too broadcast.
Is the xperia X10mini, phisicaly capable of broadcasting a Wifi signal

[Q] Looking for a rom that has ad hoc wifi support.

Was using foxfi to tether my t101 to my phone but recently my carrier has managed to block any traffic to a foxfi tethered device. Barnacle still works for non android devices. I'm rooted and updated to the latest ics. In wifi settings I can see the hotspot but when I try to connect it just says saved and never obtains an IP address. I'm hoping one of the custom roms (preferably ics) has ad hoc capabilities built in?
ICS and ad hoc? No way, afaik.
You can try the wpa_supplicant mod. Not sure if it work for the latest ICS update but it's worth a try
Also doesn't Barnacle have a bluetooth option?
Let me see if I can find the post, if not just search wpa_supplicant

I've been trying the wpa_supplicant2 unsuccessfully. It gets stuck at turning on wifi. I believe the latest update may require a developers mod to make it work again.
Barnacle doesn't have Bluetooth capabilities.
SOLVED!
I've been working on this for hours but it's so easy. I flashed revolver HD on it but I don't think that's necessary. Using barnacle on the phone just turn on wpa encryption. On the tablet when I told it to connect it asked for the key. I entered it and instead of just instantly saying saved it said obtaining ip address and then connected! Everything works. Browser, email, Pandora, Netflix, Speed test etc.
