[Q] Can I install from SD Card?

Hi all
I hope I dont get flamed for this one but....
Today, I aquired a Samsung GT-I5800 Android phone.... (Previous to this, I had a HTC Tytn... so not totally ignorant)
Unfortunately, it looks like this phone does not have anything installed on it! All that happens is that it boots to the, 'Android system recovery / Samsung Recovery Utils - for BML'
I have looked around for the answers to the following questions but have not yet found any!
1 - How do I get a ROM on to the unit?
2 - Is it possible to so it by SD Card? Does it have to be USB?
3 - What can I install - what version should/could I put on it?
Please be gentle - its my first venture with Android!

1.you use odin. There are a lot of tutorials here just look.
2. Simply download them on your mobile or on your pc. Then install it. Just type the app you want into google and download one file^^

first of all try wipping data (factory reset) and cache partition from the Recovery Utils menu.

In this guide I will attempt to help you learn your way around your device, help you gain a little knowledge, and to eliminate some of the random threads asking the same thing.

ROOTTING & FIXES:
Rooting methods (creating a goldcard is included in both methods):
Currently there are two methods to root the Inspire 4G
[mod edit - link deleted, the kit has been replaced](thanks to attn1) simply follow the instructions in the post, as well as in the read me doc. (outdated) video guide can be found here.
-Bubby's one click GUI(thanks to bubby323). Just like before simply follow the instructions provided.(outdated) video guide can be found here.
If you have problems rooting please refer to the dedicated rooting threads, the developers there created the method and will be able to help you more then I will be able to.

FLASHING A ROM & RADIO:
Flashing your first ROM:
-Download the ROM of your choice from the dev section
-Do not unpack/unzip the ROM
-Copy the ROM to the root of your sd card (Root= not in a folder)
-(optional) Backup your apps using Titanium Backup.(this only applies once you have root)
-Create a backup of your current ROM using rom manager.(this only applies once you have root)
-Boot your phone into recovery using either rom manager, or by booting into h-boot (to do this you are going to need to turn fastboot off by going to settings>applications>uncheck fast boot, then turn your phone off and turn it back on pressing both power+volume down, until the h-boot menu appears. Use the volume buttons to scroll down to recovery then press power to select.)
-Using the volume buttons scroll down to to down to wipe data/factory reset. (unless you are upgrading, THIS STEP IS NOT OPTIONAL!)
-Press the power button to select.
-Use the volume buttons to scroll down to YES-- delete all user data, use the power button to select.
-Scroll down to Advanced press power to select.
-Scroll to Wipe Dalvik Cache press power to select.
-Go down to Yes-- Wipe Dalvik Cache use the power button to select.
-Select go back
-Go to Install zip from sdcard and select it using the power button.
-Select choose zip from sdcard.
-Scroll down and find the ROM you wish to flash press the power button to select it.
-Select Yes - Install (roms name)
-You are now flashing a rom!
-Once the rom has finished flashing select reboot system now.
Things to note:
-Your first boot might take a few minutes do to deodexing and zip align.
-If your phone keeps cycling the HTC (white screen) you are going to need to go back to recovery, do a full wipe, and reflash the rom.
-Be sure to read the devs full instructions and faq before flashing!

GENERAL FIXES:
Recovering from a Soft Brick (HTC white screen)(video coming soon!)
What is a soft brick? A soft brick is where the ROM has been incorrectly flashed. (ie. you didn't data wipe, or the files were corrupt). You will see the bootsplash (htc white screen) or the boot animation continuously cycle.
How To Fix:
-Pull the battery!
-Put the battery back in.
-Turn the phone on using Power+ Vol down to enter boot loader (note: You CAN NOT have a PD98IMG on your sd card)
-Select Recovery using the volume and power buttons.
-Go down to full wipe.
-Select yes -- delete user data
-Go to advanced using the volume and power button to select.
-Select wipe dalvik cache.
-Select yes -- wipe dalvik cache
-Select go back.
-Select install zip from sd card.
-Select choose zip from sd card.
-Choose the rom you want to flash.
-After the rom flashes reboot the phone.

MISCELLANEOUS:
Returning to Stock:
(Major thanks to ClearD and Doo Doo)
Well for some reason or another you need to return your phone to stock. You might have avoided the Ace hack kit because it seemed a little complicated, and I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your going to have to use it to get back to stock.
What you will need:
1.Ace Hack Kit v9 (thanks to attn1)
2. The Stock Ruu
Note: when running the RUU make sure debugging is off!
Steps to Return to stock:
-Run the stock RUU (note: This is done on your computer. This is going to unroot your device but you will still be s-off).
-Use the instructions up to step 3 of the hack kit.
-After step three type the following in terminal emulator

./gfree -s on
sync
-At this point you need to turn the phone off (note: fast boot will have to be off)
-Boot into bootloader by using power+volume down.
-Verify that the top of your boot loader reads ship s-on.
-Rerun the RUU.
-Enjoy your completely stock Inspire.
Note: There are other options, but this method is the most complete and yields the highest success rate.

Sideloading non market apps w/without root(videos soon):
What is side loading apps? Att blocks the instillation of non market apps. Hence the need to side load apps! (Shame on you ATT you monster)
There are multiples ways to do this, and I will be going over three.
-Option 1:(w/out root) Our brother over at android central made a niffty little GUI called side load wonder machine you can find the instructions and program here!
-Option 2:(w/ or w/outroot) You can also use android sdk (adb) you will need to download sdk from google you can find that here!
-You will need to update platform tools.
-I recommend placing the platform tools files into the tools folder.
-Place the apk file you wish to side load into the tools folder.
-Make sure you have charge only, and debugging mode selected (settings>applications>debugging)
-Connect your phone to your computer
- Press shift + right click on the tools folder
-Open command promp here
(ROOT ONLY)

The easy answer: You are editing the binary code on the sd card, what this does is allow you to bypass the CID check and downgrade your rom/radio.

Yes and No, when you delete user data you are deleting anything pertaining to the rom. Essentially any thing that is on the same partition as the rom will be deleted. Since your photos and music are on your sd card you will not loose these items. It is highly recommended that you save your contacts before flashing, you can also back up sms messages using a third party messaging service called handcent.
What is the difference between ship s-off (radio s-off) and eng s-off (engineering)?

The simple answer is: ship s-off allows you to flash custom roms. Eng s-off allows access to certain partitions within the phones memory, and this is mainly used for development with kernels. Unless you are an experienced dev, I recommend you avoid eng s-off!

Essential it is firmware for the radio inside your phone. It is stored a separate partition then the rom, to keep the rom from interfering with the radio firmware.

The only time flashing radio isn't optional, is when you root and s-off the phone. Rooting and s-off requires you to down grade the radio/rom and use the exploit to hack it. Once you have rooted and s-off the phone flashing a radio is totally up to you. Keep in mind that not using a the recommended radio for a specific rom may lead to problems.

If you are rooted it will fail to update, You will need to flash back to stock in order to do the update, causeing you to loose root. If you stroll over to the dev section of this forum, there are a ROMS that are using the 1.84 (ota updated base) inspire base.​

I was just thinking today about the lack of one-stop "guide" threads for the Inspire.
Looking forward to some newbie ROM-flashing stuff, if that's the direction you plan on heading.
The only thing I've done so far is root and a cwm current ROM back-up. That's it. Starting to get the itch to try flashing another ROM, but I'm a scaredy-cat. ;-)

But i still don't know whether I need to flash radio or not. And since there are some posted issues like GPS doesn't work or 4G signal lost. That keeps me from starting to work on my very first root.
I'm a newbie who really wants to do but I'm afraid of screwing something during the rooting process.

[Q] Sequence to installing rom?

Hi guys, i am brandspanking new at android as i have only had my phone (lg p500) for 2 weeks. i have however quickly picked up on roms,kernels,basebands etc.. I would really appreciate it if one of you TopDogs would explain to me which i should do first? My question is what sequence must items be installed in ie Rom the gapps then kernel then baseband? or is it baseband first then kernel then rom then gapps?? i really do appologise if this sounds stupid but i will need direction in this regard to be confident enough to go through with flashing a rom which im actually lank amped to do.

In regards to baseband, kernel, rom type info, I believe most kernels are packaged with the roms themselves, and if there's any other information about a special installation it would be included on the rom page.
First thing you wanna do is research a bit about your phone and what roms are available to see if you even want to risk bricking your phone for the additional features. You can search for your phone at the top right hand side of the XDA forums. From there you can see what forms of development are available. Most popular forms are NAND and SD based roms. Research a bit on each to see which fits your needs more. NAND will completely replace the stock system but also presents more opportunity for things to go wrong and potentially damage your phone. SD doesn't replace your system, but runs off of your SD card. In any case, selecting the method that works for you is the first step. There will be indications on the rom download pages as to what type of rom it is (NAND or SD).
Second step is prepping your device for the right system. I have and HTC HD2, and it was required for me to install HSPL and update the device radio. These are very important steps and must be done properly or everything following will likely not work.
Next you want to install your boot loader (if one is required). For my device, cLK and Magloader are the popular onese, however yours will likely be different if you need one at all.
Next you will install ClockworkMod(CWM) Recovery on your device, which is the core system that allows the flashing of roms, storage management, and a few other things. Make note of the partition information of the rom you select, because when you flash CWM you will need to partition the boot/system/cache. If you don't do this properly you will likely encounter a boot loop or total failures to boot.
Once you've got CWM on your device, you can download the rom you've selected on your pc and transfer it to your SD card on your phone (which is done by enabling mass storage through CWM). After you've got the rom on your sd card you do the following:
In CWM, select "flash zip from sd" >> "choose zip" >> select your rom zip file >> approve the flash
Sometimes the developers of these roms allow for some selection or customization in the flashing process, so be sure to pay attention to what's going on. You may also need to write down error codes if something goes wrong and you need help.
That's really all there is to it, though it can be more or less complicated than I explained depending on your device and which roms you pick.j

I have flashed most of the ROMS on HTC 32A magic ..
The Below process i have followed always and achieved expected results
1. Must Have custom recovery Image which supports your Phone Borad
2.Download and keep the custom ROM ready
3.Copy the Rom to root of SD card
Reboot phone into Recovery
Enter Recovery,
Full Wipe/ Factory Reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe System
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe Battery Stats(Optional)
Select Zip file which you would like to Flash ROM
After Successful flashing
Reboot
Phone will start with New custom ROM

Yeah I forgot that part. you do want to clear your data, cache, and system files while in CWM, otherwise you'll be writing over your old system. A lot of roms are custom teaked and packed in way different than the stock rom and it can just get screwy if you don't. Make it a good habit of doing that before you flash! You can also back up your roms through CWM so if you don't like the changes you've made after a flash you can always revert back like nothing ever happened. Just don't wipe your SD card or you'll lose your backups! Only do that if you're okay with losing the data on your SD.

This should work out, if you do the kernel flash before the ROM, it will be replaced with whatever kernel that was packaged with the ROM. If you are trying to flash an ICS based ROM, you may need to flash the ROM a couple times (if it installs too quickly, as in 5 to 10 seconds). This is a known issue.

[Q] How to flash a rom after rooting

OK I apologize ahead of time for what is probably a ridiculously easy question for most.
The ATT 1X is my first android and this is the first phone that I've rooted.
I read for hours and followed the instruction to a T. I rooted, unlocked the bootloader and installed CWM.
I can get into Recover/Boot mode or whatever you call it on phone startup, I have the Super user icon in my files, but I have no idea what to do now.
I found a ROM that I thought was worth a shot (CleanROM 2.5) but I don't know what to do. I've read and researched for hours now and everyone's problems seem to be complicated but no one talks about this.
I downloaded the ROM to my computer but I don't know what to do with the files, I can't find a .bat file or anything to initialize it and I am stuck.
I've wiped the data and done everything in the steps but I'm stuck at actually installing it. I know I'm obviously doing something wrong but I feel like I'm very close to what needs to be done.
Any help is welcome, thanks

OK I apologize ahead of time for what is probably a ridiculously easy question for most.
The ATT 1X is my first android and this is the first phone that I've rooted.
I read for hours and followed the instruction to a T. I rooted, unlocked the bootloader and installed CWM.
I can get into Recover/Boot mode or whatever you call it on phone startup, I have the Super user icon in my files, but I have no idea what to do now.
I found a ROM that I thought was worth a shot (CleanROM 2.5) but I don't know what to do. I've read and researched for hours now and everyone's problems seem to be complicated but no one talks about this.
I downloaded the ROM to my computer but I don't know what to do with the files, I can't find a .bat file or anything to initialize it and I am stuck.
I've wiped the data and done everything in the steps but I'm stuck at actually installing it. I know I'm obviously doing something wrong but I feel like I'm very close to what needs to be done.

I recommend you check QA thread found in a sub forum under your devices section and you review the stickied post for ROM install or Google "android install custom ROM " (remove quotes). Too much info on this already to type it all back out here. Did you watch you tube newb video you agreed to have watched when getting an xda account?
Essentially you now made it so your phone has the ability via CWM Recovery to now boot to that to install ROM zip or continue to use rooted stock ROM (how you flashed that zip for superuser is baasically same as how you flash a cwm compatible ROM zip (MOST but not all ROMs)) which with SuperUser can now run privelleged code if it is made to or requires it to run.

Thanks. I know this must seem so stupid, but I've been searching this forum, google, youtube and pretty much everything else for how to do this and I get it all and understand what's happening.
I just don't know where to put this ROM (which folder) to get it to install.

So after all that searching you never came across instructions informing you to put the zip on your phones storage?
You should probably just hold off a bit on flashing anything then. Not being mean but it sounds like you are confused by the process and end result. Step back and do some basic checklisting.

Download the rom you want and DO NOT UN ZIP IT. THEN PLACE THAT ZIP ON PHONE STORAGE AND BOOT INTO YOUR CUSTOM RECOVERY . HIT INSTALL FROM SD CARD AND MAKE SURE THE ROM YOU DOWNLOADED IS LISTED BUT DONT FLASH YET. GO BACK THE THE MAIN SCREEN OF RECOVERY. NOW MAKE A BACKUP. WHEN THAT IS DONE GO BACK TO MAIN RECOVERY SCREEN AND HIT WIPE PHONE DATA AND THEN CONFIRM. THEN GO AND HIT CLEAR CACHE OPTION. THEN GO BACK AND GO TO ADVANCED AND CLEAR DALVICK CACHE. NOW YOUR READY TO FLASH. GO TO INSTALL ZIP FROM SD AND FLASH YOUR ROM. FIRST BOOT ALWAYS TAKES LONG AFTER FLASHING A NEW ROM :thumbup:

Been posting on the internet for decades, don't worry about being mean. I'm here to learn. I rooted, unlocked the bootloader and installed CWM so that I could take advantage before the phone asked me to update the software to the 1.85 version.
My phone works fine now, and I did everything correctly which is what I was setting out to do. I'm in no rush to flash a ROM, but now that I'm ready I'm itching to try it out.

Plug phone into computer. When prompted, select Disk Drive. On computer, browse to your computer, open the 'disk drive', and copy the zip there. THAT is your sdcard as seen by your phone.

Wow I feel dumb. I was looking for a sub folder or directory specifically for storage and backup.

Yeah, some phones you may have to drag down notifications and tap USB mode or USB connected notification (it has standard USB icon and only appears when phone attached to computer). Then tap either USB storage mode or the button to enable USB drives. Then on computer just like a thumb drive it adds drive letter. Copy anything there that is /mnt/sdcard or /sdcard on phone. BE SURE TO EJECT DRIVES BEFORE AND TAP TO DISABLE USB ON PHONE IN THAT ORDER THEN UNPLUG FROM USB (failure to do so COULD result in data loss or corruption which you DO NOT want to happen to a ROM zip)!
Then boot in to recovery choose install zip from sdcard (not apply update from sdcard) as install from allows you to browse for any zip and install. Usually Vol up and down moves through menus and power or search button is enter. BE SURE THE ROM YOU DOWNLOAD IS SPECIFICALLY MEANT FOR YOUR DEVICE OR YOU COULD EASILY BRICK YOUR DEVICE. PLEASE REVIEW HOW TO RUN NANDROID BACKUPS AND RUN ONE BEFORE INSTALLING A DIFFERENT ROM.
I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH IF UNSURE DON'T PROCEED, BE SURE YOU RUN NANDROID BACKUPS AND ENSURE YOU FOLLOW INSTALL DIRECTIONS INCLUDED WITH YOUR ROM. ALSO, NEVER FORMAT EMMC (AKA INTERNAL SDCARD) IT ALMOST GUARENTEES A BRICKED DEVICE.

Is all good, and now you see why we were kinda scratching our heads wondering what was up a little . Glad we could help get you going though welcome to the world of custom ROMs. Please just be careful and always do backups and take it slow and read things 2x before even attempting once. While it can be easy to do it is also easy to accidentally brick your device (make it not work and have to be sent out for repairs).

My phone wont boot into Cmw recovery, Please help.

My phone is rooted (With Super One Click) and when tap the "boot into recovery" option in Rom Manager it just send me to the stock recovery (with Blue text and what not). I have flashed Rom Manager with my Sidekick 4g before I tried to boot into recover. Please, someone help me. The answer is probably right in my face, but my noobish eyes just cant see it. :crying:
Please don't bash me this is my first post. I made sure there wasnt any post like this before i started a new tread.

Don't use ROM Manager with Sidekick 4G as CWM doesn't work the same way. When you reboot you always go into Samsung recovery from where you gotta reinstall packages to 'fake flash' the CWM recovery. If it says permission denied, the recovery file wasn't pushed to /system properly. You gotta reinstall every single time .. till of course you install a custom ROM. I think most come with voodoo CWM which replaces stock recovery, allowing you to go into CWM directly when you go to Recovery.
Firstly you need root, which I'm assuming you already have. Then you have to move a custom recovery to your phone's /system to allow you to install unsigned packages. You can do this using root explorer (paid app, but its the most simple and easy way of doing it) or you can do it using other similar apps that give you R/W (read and write) access. You also need to have a custom recovery file, the update.zip which when you hit reinstall packages (given you pushed the custom recovery file to the phone's system) would bring up clockworkmod recovery.

I'm thinking about ODIN my device and start over but this time following one of the guides provided. I got cwm working but now I get a long script of code with a error that saids that it can't mount this and stuff like that. Ill try to post a image to give you a little better look at my problem. And for some reason the cmw logo isn't coming up behind the orange text.

Those guided really helped me out I spent ages reading up different things so when I finally went and did it, I didn't face any problems!
Important notes:
1. Root, obviously I personally didn't use the latest edition of SuperOneClick (at the time) on the website, but the file the dev posted on his XDA Thread.
2. Don't use ROM Manager or any other 'one click' kind of recovery for this phone. You need to download a custom recovery file and update file (links above, thanks Krylon) and go into CWM Recovery through the official Samsung Recovery through reinstalling the custom update file. This is the only way to access Orange CWM. Most custom ROMs come with the Red Voodoo CWM which is permanent in the sense that when you go into recovery, you should go into CWM (Red), instead of having to go through Samsung.
3. Orange CWM (and some say Red CWM as well) has some mounting issues. Always remember to check your mounts such that System, Data (well just to be safe, all of the items in the list) always say UNMOUNT. Basically when its mounted, means CWM has access to the partition. It says UNMOUNT because it is MOUNTED. I know thats a bit confusing, but think of it like this - there is a light switch that says ON so when you press it, turns the lights on but then the writing changes to OFF because you need to push the switch to turn it off. Erm .. hope that helps?! Lol.
4. Basically if your partitions are showing up as MOUNT, means you need to MOUNT them. Otherwise whatever changes you did won't apply! Instead of getting confused like I did, just make sure the screen says UNMOUNT SYSTEM and so forth for the rest of the items on the list.
5. Before installing a custom ROM, I always wiped x 3, before and after. Means after checking mounts, wipe data / dalvik, etc. 3 times. So for me, after checking mounts I would go to wipe date - yes - done 1; wipe data - yes - done 2; wipe data - yes - done 3. Followed by wipe dalvik and whatever else you want to wipe. Then I'd check mounts again (they usually get unmounted after a wipe .. well for me they always have anyway) before installing the ROM. Oh, sometimes I installed the ROM twice. Then I'd check mounts, wipe x 3, check mounts again before finally rebooting and letting it stand still for around 20 minutes or so. I don't really know if there is a logic or if doing it so many times makes a difference but I know some other people have done this and (other than wasting time) it doesn't really do any harm (someone correct me if I'm wrong) so why the hell not? I think the basic reasoning behind double / triple wiping and installing is to make sure that the changes are properly written as sometimes the system still retains old data.
6. Some people have SD card partitioning issues apparent. I can't remember why everyone went around partitioning in the first place (it must have been for some important reason, completely slipped my mind right now .. I personally did it to link my apps / data to SD card and save internal memory / space) but I personally used Gparted to partition my card on a computer (rather than CWM on the phone as I've heard people have issues with this) and never had a problem.
But I think thats it. I know there is a lot of information but its really worth having a look at the guide and other posts on that thread as that and the ROM thread (I personally use GOV 3.2) really had me prepare for any possible issue beforehand so I started off in a position where I could avoid them.
