As of right now I have flashed CM7 from this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1142872
1. Since when one flashes CM7, the file systems are converted to MTD... If I decided to flash MUIU, everything should still remain intact correct?
2. In the thread mentioned above, it says that I should not flash ROMs through CWM anymore after flashing CM7... What other methods of flashing ROMs can one use besides Odin? Why is this the case? and is there any other method to flash ROMs just using my mesmerize and not a computer?
3. If I were to flash MUIU, is there anyway to keep all of my apps, the accompanying data (settings, stored data, etc..) with the apps, contacts, old text messages, and so on??? Can I use this data interchangably between ROM flashes?
Thanks in advance...
As for flashing. What that means is not to use the three finger method anymore and to only use the recovery gotten to by holding power. Choosing reboot then choosing recovery.
As for MIUI what I would do is make a backup in the recovery I mentioned above. Then you can use an app like titanium backup to backup your apps before flashing MIUI. You can then flash MIUI in the same recovery mentioned above and your apps should be fine. If not. Then you can restore them with titanium backup.
Then in the event you don't like MIUI. You can go back to recovery and just restore the backup you made previous and be back on cm7

Thank you so much for your help. I am about to give it a try.
which version of MUIU would you recommend??? I see that there are issues with WiFi.
Honestly man, I haven't tried MIUI personally. I would recommend reading through the thread and just seeing which version most people are staying with. I wish I could give ya more but without trying it myself that's the best I can tell ya.

where would I find my contacts in titanium backup if I want to restore it individually and not using batch?
I would use Google to back them up. I personally don't use titanium. I used the advanced restore option in CWM. But for contacts. I would let Google sync them. That way as soon as you sign in on your.phone they restore.

for the miui questions, I have used it since 6.2 and it is my favorite rom. I am currently running 1.7.29 from rootzwiki and it works great, no issues.

Bought captivate from craigslist, from a guy who works for HP and said he got official AT&T 2.2 ROM on it from a buddy of his.
Attached screenshot (taken from another captivate) - Is it official AT&T or a mod?
JI6 is the unofficial 2.2 leak that all of our other 2.2 roms are based off of. The official 2.2 rom hasn't been released yet.
Can I upgrade to official ROM when it releases?
Or do I have to do something to force it? I don't want to be struck with this version if it's unofficial
ODIN usually gets you back to stock as long as you have the 3 button combo
The official firmwares are utter garbage.
Sent from my Captivate.
There is currently no office release of 2.2 (Froyo) for samsung captivate!
There however are a ton of unofficial copies of the unofficial leak.
All unofficial copies still use a beta version as their source, but if it works ok for you then I would not roll back to 2.1.
Personally, I stayed on 2.1 due to the 2.2 bugs that bothered me.
That's a leak we've been using for a while. You can go back to the current stock ROM with the tools in this thread.
Can you point me what bugs I can expect?

There's a whole thread about 2.2 bugs in the General forum.
There isn't really any way to just 'downgrade' back to 2.1 without losing your data. Your best bet is to install Titanium Backup, Rom Manager and the 2e recovery.
The 2e recovery will allow you to use Rom Manager to boot to the clockwork recovery where you can do a Nandroid backup of your rom, in case anything breaks while you are flashing 2.1.
Titanium Backup will backup all your apps and whatnot. You would use the ODIN one click 2.1 installer to go back to the stock factory 2.1 install, which will also wipe your phone clean. Then you would install Titanium Backup again from the market, and restore all your apps that you backed up before you flashed back to 2.1.
I knew craigslist had the "official" Froyo update!
Swyping...please read slowly!
I don't mind losing data, what is the quick way to go back to 2.1?

Calls drop frequently , so the phone is unusable.

Read what you quoted - Odin One click will get you back to 2.1. Read the captivate bible thread in the dev section.
I rooted my Samsung mesmerize and deleted some apps.
Now I have a blank screen and can't find no apps. I've
tried everything, Took out battery with no luck.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
You gotta be careful deleting factory apps.
If you made a backup first, try restoring that. If not, your best bet is to perform an odin flash back to stock (though if you're gonna do that, you might as well flash the EC10 release and have froyo).
From there, if you want the stock experience but less bloatware, just flash the pick-n-pack rom in the development forum (just make sure it's the same baseband version that you flashed via odin). The pick-n-pack rom is a stock rom with everything that can be safely removed pulled out of it, and has been modified to support third party themes. There are also addon packs which can be used to add back in whatever stock apps you might still want.

Could one of my fellow G2x fans direct me to a download of the stock Kernel? I searched and did not find it. I have made a nandroid backup and titanium backup and want to play with Faux's kernel. Instead of restoring a complete backup if I want to remove it, I would rather just flash the stock kernel. Is this possible or am I misunderstanding something?
Thanks
I doubt you will find a complete stock original kernel, faux kernel for froyo is based on stock. Use faux froyo kernel you won't regret it, the best froyo kernel out! Stable, fast, good on battery, your phone will never be the same.......
Suprah..."no cyanogen, rom manager still fake flashes the roms thats y for nvidia phones we have to use nvflash"

Thanks for the response. I tried a couple different versions and ran into some issues and had to restore back to stock. The ext4 version messed with the black taskbar I have loaded and the ext3 with no overclock was half the speed of the stock kernel acording to several benchmarks I ran. I wanted to continue to experiment but wanted a simple solution to move back if I needed to without doing a complete restore of a backup.
I agree Faux is a terrific developer and I am sure my issues are of my own making. I wonder if he could upload the base stock kernel. I think I will pm him.
Still on the hunt for the stock kernel. Any dev's out there that can help?
You will receive excellent karma for helping me out. I promise.
Edit. I think I will try this. I am going to restore my phone to stock and use the following extract method.
http://forum.androidcentral.com/epic-4g-rooting-roms-hacks/41381-how-extract-kernel-rom.html
I will post the stock kernel if I am able to get this to work.
Hey guys, ok so I am coming from two HTC Heros (CMDA Sprint)
Was running cyanogenmod on both (me and the wife) loved it.
Now that I have the E4GT, I went ahead last week and used ODIN to install LoStKernel.
Now it did give me root and I have used apps like rom toolbox and setcpu.
My main problem is it seems these samsung devices are a lot trickier to tinker with.
Basically I am looking to get Clockworkmod so I can flash roms and make nandroid backups.
From what I have read, I need a kernel that supports and/or has CWM in it.
I tried flashing CWM with rom manager, and it installed - but I have no option to backup/restore I can only flash a zip or clear cache.
There are SO MANY things posted in the development section and I do not know which kernels are the latest, best etc.
I need:
a) CWM/busybox
b) overclocking support
c) FULL stock functionality (no loss of wifi or something stupid like that)
From what I am understanding the kernel is included with a rom. But I can't flash a rom without CWM. So I am rooted but stuck with stock rom and it's kernel.
Confused, lol!
Can someone point me to a proper thread to get me CWM and a well supported ROM to install? Can I get CWM working fully on the stock kernel/rom?
If someone can point me to the right direction, maybe I can find a developer to donate to lol!
No love?
At this point I'm just trying to get cwm. Seems I may have already had it just didn't know it came with lostkernel and now I botched it using rom manager.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
You can actually flash a new kernel with CWM in odin
Thats the easiest method
There are several, as for the best I dont know yet
Im still tinkering with my setup
I guess that's my main issue - I can't find one that has CWM, everything I am seeing is a ROM that needs CWM to install.
If I had CWM I'd be all set because then I can backup my setup and try new things without worry, but I don't want to use ODIN to try a kernel that CWM won't take, or isn't there, and then lose what I have ya know?
All set, seems I flashed a kernel that wasn't what it was supposed to be. I apparently flashed his earlier version (pre-LoStKernel) that did not have CWM5 it it.
Just used ODIN last night to drop in LoStKernel and kept root, but also have CWM5 now. After clearing my SD Card, made my first backup. 1.5GB, jesus! lol. Nearly my whole SD card... yes, it's from my old Hero, so, time to get a 32GB.
well right now I'm currently flashing the cm7 rom. I can't send/receive any mms right now. I've tried searching and I've tried a lot of things, but nothing seems to be working. I also miss my stock froyo as well. So I was wondering if I can revert back to the original stock froyo, but still be root.
I used rom manager and I backuped the orginal rom before I flashed the cm7 and the addons, but I don't know where it use or even how to go about it . Can I use that to revert back to the orginial rom and will I still be rooted?
I'm currently on the mytouch4g and if you know where I can download the rom for froyo please post a link.
thank you very much.

Hi, the answer to your question is actually in your post...if you backed up your froyo rom with the rom manager, then you just have to restore the backup.
To do that, go to the Rom manager, manage and restore, and then find your backed up rom. It should take a while and you will be back to the state you were before flashing CM7. Just in case make a nandroid backup of your current rom in case things don't go as expected. It should be working neatly. Hope it helps. Let me know if you could restore it. See ya....

Hey i also have a Mytouch 4G and i have looked around before but couldn't seem to find a Stock froyo rom that is rooted. I would recommend you use a different ROM other then CM7. There are plenty of roms in the mytouch 4g section. we also have a great dev TheDerekJay does an amazing job with keeping all his roms updated. im using his MIUI rom on my mytouch and im in love with it.
actually I just looked at my rom manager backup file. and it says the date for today... I used mybackup root to just back up my data because I was planning on changing my rom. So I'm seriously am confused now... I back uped the rom (froyo) just yesterday so shouldn't it say that 1/1/2012 instead of 1/2/2012? Should I just flash this backup anyway and hope for the best?

I should have the date and time when you did the backup...but if It was after midnight or your time zone is not correct that might affect the name. If it is the only backup you did then it must be it. Let me know after you flashed it how things resulted.
thanks glevitan. You were right the time zone is probably not set correctly. I restored the file and I'm back to the original stock froyo and I'm still rooted I'm very happy now. thank you so much.
