Hello all.
i've a US 3g motorola xoom. it will be upgraded to have 4g. but how about 3g? how about sim card slot?
see here please : http://www.droid-life.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/xoom-4g-upgrade1.png
"When motorola xoom launches on 2/24, it will be a 3G ready Device"
as i know 3g will be work after upgrade, as in the sim card slot i see that : "replace with sim only after 4g upgrade"
3g on my device not works. when i put sim card nothing happens.
so my question is, does my xoom have 3g hardware or not? it's not working because it has not the 3g hardware or it's just because of software?
for 3g to be work, i have to send my xoom to motorola for upgrade or i can buy it's hardware and done it myself?
i'm asking this because i'm outside of US. i dont know if i can send my us motorola xoom for upgrade or not. will they return my xoom to outside us? i'm in turkey.

You might want to post this in the Q/A section and not the development section.
Not sure what exactly you mean, but the Verizon/3G version of the xoom works 3G out of the box. You do not need to install a sim card to get 3G. When you buy the 3G version, you need to setup an account with Verizon, setup a data plan, and then activate your device on verizon's network. A SIM card was not needed when I used 3G on my Verizon Motorola Xoom.
You can't take any sim card and install it to the xoom, yet, I believe (correct me if i'm wrong) when verizon is ready to start the 4G setup, you need to send your xoom in because they have to add the 4G device into your xoom, possibly opening it and adding it OR replacing your current one and giving you one that already has one installed. Or maybe the SIM card they're going to install is the 4G device itself, possibly.
Edit: looks like they might need to open it up and install a mini-PCI device.

Thread moved rather than deleted because question was partially answered. In the future, post all questions in the dedicated Q&A forum.
oh, sorry, i post thread in development section by mistake
thanks for your replies.
so, i cannot use the sim card slot even after upgrade for 2g networks? never i cannot use it for example text message just like ipad2 3g?
how about the 3g uk xooms ? can they use 2g simcards?
does those have sim card slot or they work without sim card in 3g like mine?
isnt there anyway to get 2g/3g simcard worked on my 3g verizon xoom? even with upgrading/replacing hardware myself?
is there any mini-PCI chip that enables xoom to operate sim card? for example massaging or using gprs (2g) network. just like ipad 2 3g
as i see on other topics, probably airprime mc7750 will be installed on our devices during upgrade
and i see on it's website that it supports gsm/gprs.
so do you think can we use 2g/3g sim cards after upgrade?
can uk 3g xooms operate simcard for 2g/3g networks? if yes, whats difference between their xoom's hardware with mine? can i replace hardware? for example install a mini-pci-e 3g/2g modem

I'm in Canada using Rogers GSM, currently with a Treo 650 + SIM card. I am about to buy a Sprint unlocked Touch Pro 2 (the GSM is unlocked on the phone). It's as simple as popping my SIM card in like any other GSM phone and that's it to use the phone?
Also, I found this on a site selling Touch Pro 2 unlocked: "*Cell phones which are marked as unlocked ( being international phones ) are not capable of working on the internet. They are not enabled to browse the internet and will not be able to access it."
^^^ Can someone tell me if this means Wi-Fi does not work, or 3G (data plan with carrier) does not work? I have no intention of getting a data plan so the 3G is irrelevant to me, I would only be using Wi-Fi here and there.
Thanks for any help
No, the WiFi is a completely separate radio...
If you end up getting a data plan, the difference would be that the World-Wide GSM frequencies are different than the US ones... So you might have to reconfigure some data settings and may only have 2G data where you are...
Thanks zcarman. What does it mean that the WiFi is a separate "radio?" Is that just the term for each connection aspect, like GPS, WiFi, bluetooth? Or?
Yes I have talked to Rogers support already about the lack of 3G, again that's no prob as I will not have a data plan..
And I was searching this forum a lot and it appears the Sprint TP2 already comes unlocked for GSM so I can pop in my SIM card, but then other posts say that it is a CDMA phone, I am just confused I suppose hehe..
Exactly, they are separate connections - Bluetooth, WiFi, CDMA, GSM - as far as the phone is concerned. The wifi as far as I know is B/G... No N support, but I don't know that for a fact since my networks are all backward compatible.
For better support of the SIM slot, you can force the phone to stay on GSM by setting to manual network instead of automatic so it stays connected to Rogers and doesn't try to flip back to CDMA - if you've already one this, then someone else will have to jump in, but the settings are:
All Settings > Personal > Phone > Network (tab) > Mode of Operation = GSM/UMTS Only
Thanks a lot zcarman, I just won a Sprint TP2 off ebay It should be here early next week. I am confused, though, about getting ROMs and all the modifications/hacks floating around here and PPC Geeks, because from what I have read it is super important to only install stuff based on whether your phone is CDMA or GSM... so which is mine? Because I will be using my sim card and GSM, does that mean I have a GSM TP2 and install ROMs and such for GSM version of the phone, or? Kinda confused on this
Sprint and Verizon are CDMA phones...
AT&T and T-Mo are GSM phones...
ONLY USE CDMA ROMS ON DEVICES LABELED FOR VZW OR SPRINT!
Thanks zcarman Appreciate all your help!!
Since the euro 3G version has launch, most of the US here either use a WIFI or the CDMA with the missing PCIE HSDPA card...
Now, I'm wondering what card are they using? Will it work if we manage to get the card install and flash the 3G firmware to it..will it enable the function??
Any insight?
Thanks!
I would bet that the UMTS model doesn't have a card; why would it? It would permit UMTS models to get the LTE upgrade in future as well.
Regardless, there's teardown threads elsewhere showing that trying to graft 3G onto a Wi-Fi model is going to be prohibitively difficult with respect to hardware.
hello all,
i've a 3g verizon us xoom. may i install uk 3g xoom's rom on it?
may i use a 2g/3g sim card after that?
thanks
Same Problem
Hi developers,
I have a very similar problem, except for I'm trying to use my US (used to be Verizon - but I UNLOCKED it) with China Unicom's 3G sim card. It won't pick up signal. I wonder if that is possible and what I need to change in order for it to work.
Any help will be appreciated,
thanks
The US xoom is cdma 3g and not gsm, which is why it wont pick up signal. Also the simcard slot is not for the 3g but for 4g which isn't available yet. I would doubt it would work.
Sent from my MZ604 using XDA Premium App
Verizons xoom is CDMA and the hardware is different, the sim slot in the verizon has no hardware yet. When the free hardware update comes in at some point it will be 4G not 3G.
So in short the answer is NO.
Lordao
YES! you can use any images on your verizon 3G XOOM!
I have tried several, and they ALL work!
you WILL get your SIM working as well!! but you will not be able to use the 3G GSM network, because the images do not contain the baseband files used for the radio.
Hardware differences have not been confirmed by anyone, people are just assuming. The radio chip used multi-frequency capable hence must be the same.
One must do a baseband firmware change, to find out if the CDMA to HSPA/GSM will work!

Ok
Thanks for your responses...
I'll go back to China Unicom and ask them for the CDMA 3G, since they're supposed to have that, too.
hello all
i have a 3g verizon xoom but im outside us.
here we have only gprs and and edge in 2g networks. no 3g yet (hehe but we have 2 wimax operators)
so i cannot use my sim card in my tablet, as i know it does not have the required hardware.
as i understand from forum posts, in 4g upgrade they will install a new mini-pci-e hardware and reinstall a new version of android.
may i buy that mini-pci-e card myself and install it? then can i use my 2g sim card on tablet for gprs or edge?
im in iran and cannot send xoom to motorola.
is there anyway to use sim card in tablet? with/without hardware upgrade
Hello all
i have a verizon 3g xoom. it's not upgraded yet. i live outside us
about the UK 3g xoom, can it operate 2g sim card? for sms, gprs or ...
how about normal 3g sim cards?
is there any hardware difference between mine and uk one?
may i operate my 2g sim card on my xoom? how about 3g?
when i put sim card nothing happen. i just tried 2g sim card
our 3g operator is not started selling sim cards ... but we have 4g operator.
if i install uk xoom's rom on my own, can i use sim card?
is there any mini pci-e card that i can use my sim card with it? (self upgrade xoom with custom mini-pci-e)
please help me. i need some information. i'm confused.

how about this thread? i've done that but dont work for me. there is no signal, i think it didnt recognized my sim card.
if i install the mini-pci-e card that motorola installs on xoom during upgrade, can i use sim card for 2g/3g ? (sms or internet)
i have found this : "If you bought your Xoom from Verizon, it will have no SIM card slot. Verizon's CDMA network doesn't use SIM cards. Also, if you bought the Verizom model, it will only work on Verizon, and not another carrier. There is also a WiFi-Only Xoom, and it does not have a SIM slot."
here : "http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/53440/Why+I+can%27t+find+3G+SIM+Slot+in+my+Motorola+Xoom"
but mine have sim slot with a plastic sim on it.
The Verizon 3G Xoom does have a sim card slot but no hardware inside to read the sim card. That is what the 4G upgrade was for, to install the hardware necessary to utilize the sim card for the Verizon 4G LTE network.
I don't know if anyone has gotten a Verizon Xoom working on any other carriers network.
Theres pix of the inside of my Uk3g Zoom somewhere...
