I just got my charge today and I want to root it so i can restore some of my apps with titanium backup.. What is the easiest method to root? With my fascinate I was able to use one click root method. Is there a way with this phone? If not, which package is the easiest to get my phone rooted. I dont want to go gingerbread yet and I dont want my phone to be all different. I wouldnt mind being debloated though....
thanks guys!
you could flash stock ee4 debloated and you'll be rooted with that too..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094304&highlight=debloated
i would recommend going with a custom ROM though. GummyCharged is pretty good and its got Voodoo so you're phone will fly

I used this to root but once completed you can change to GC or whatever you want.

good grief
save yourself the effort. If you have ODIN, use that and flash this MD5.
http://bit.ly/o38WVM
It's from gummy charge. You'll be on gingerbread, rooted, and with a new modem, etc...
If you don't have or know what odin is or don't want to go to gingerbread, then it's the droid charge pack and alot of reading.
I ended up going with humble. So far it seems very stable and clean.
Thanks for the advise.

im debating between the two tools to use when i get my captivate on thursday... i know compared with the two, there is some that has features than the other.... what would u recommend and what did u use?
Sre. It has OC and a better tether option. Even better would be to use the new hybrid Rom with unhelpfuls kernel. No need to lagfix

thanks! i was kinda leaning toward sre! is it really easy to install? i mean ive read the directions and all and looks and sounds easy... i have mac would that make it an issue? it says to use titanium backup before... sorry for the noob question but where can i get the titanium backup?
edit: so i need to root first then do the sre?

Once you get your Captivate get Ryan's One Click lag fix and use it only to root your phone. Then you will have Super user permissions, next step would be Titanium Backup available on the market which you need root to get. Next step get ROM Manager donated version off the market and use Clockwork mod recovery through ROM manager to always perform backups before flashing new ROMs or Kernals. Yes, SRE is easy to install. The only trouble you will run into is Odin one click is for windows systems not Mac so you will probably need to have acccess to a windows based pc if you ever eff your phone and need to flash back to stock.
edit: so i need to root first then do the sre?
You should root first so that you have ROM manager and Titanium to back up before flashing SRE. One Click lag fix on the market will do this for you, but only use it for rooting not the lagfix. Tatuyama's ext4 lagfix is better imo.
Unhelpful's Kernal is included in SRE, fyi.
The new hybrid ROM still has some bugs and SRE is as good, imo.

thank you for ur response! it was very helpful! what if i use parallels and run win 7 and use SRE? if not then i guess i have to use UTB??
Nope, just an update.zip check the developers section. Super easy and no more odin needed unless you need to revert to stock first

so odin is basically a "factory restore?" and can odin be used only on windows based computers? so once i get my captivate i can go straight into SRE?
odin is a program that will apply factory firmwares to your phone. so whether you want to restore to stock or try some of the newer leaked firmwares available, odin is the tool to use. and as far as i know it is for pc only.

thank you for clarifying. so it is only windows based? parallel's might not work? well i hope when i do run SRE, i will be good! im not really into modifying the phone heavily. just wanna run SRE cuz it sounds very promising and helps make the device run smoother.
i am currently using the non OC version of sre along with the tatayuma ext4 lagfix and i am very happy with it. everything has been very stable thus far.

can u provide me to the right place for the tatayuma ext lag fix? so why aren't u using the OC version of sre? so u applyed the tatayuma then sre and ur good?
edit: nvm i found the tatayuma... just dont know what to use!!! theres quite a few to choose from!!! how did u all manage to choose the right one???
the tatayuma works very well with sre. the order i went in was flashed to stock rom->flashed sre->installed lagfix. i didnt want to go with the oc version because i think the phone is fast enough as it is and really what is another 200mhz going to do to this phone? as for the lagfix, i went with the ext4 as it has been proven to be more stable than the ext2. for me i am more concerned with reliability over power/speed. overclocking means more heat and more power being sucked out of the battery and we all know this battery is quick to die.
does anyone know how to do this? i have used superoneclick, AIO captivate tools and OCD. nothing works
i have a rooted captivate running froyo stock
Backup your stuff and flash Cognition. Easiest way. You may want to stay stock, but trust me, it's much better.

Agreed. Read what cog has in it, it comes with side loading enabled
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I got it to work through superoneclick even though it failed the 1st 2 times I did it. I restarted the phone did the non market app fix and then restarted again and applanet worked. It is still a little buggy but it works.

I agree with flashing Cog.
However, I am currently trying to see how far I can get with the stock 2.2.
With that said, I used "SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse" to root and allow non-market apps. If it does not work, remember to right click the .exe and run as administrator (if you are on Win7).
i want to keep it stock because of the just incase something happens and i need to use the warranty or insurance i want to get it back to stock in the matter of 2 clicks to backup all the att bloatware and unroot so i can send it in.
i know there is another method to flash back to stock but i dont really understand flashing different roms and kernels and want it to be as simple as possible. if i find a real need to flash a different rom and kernel i will learn more about it. im just not fully educated on much of this stuff.

Seriously, man, getting back to stock is as easy as that. All you have to do is download Odin one click, put your phone in download mode, click start, and bam, you're at stock. If you need me to walk you through flashing ROM's, I can later on today. It's not as hard as you think.
where do i download the rom for cognition
what are the pros and cons to cognition and the known bugs in it
why choose this over other roms? why not flash to 2.3.3?
will i have to re-download all of my apps and settings etc.?

I'll pm you with details, just download Titanium Backup and sms backup and restore from the market for now.
CM7 Inspire 4G
So a couple of quick questions.
One (and im asking this because including my og droid i haven't not been rooted in two years) if i return to stock (i.e verizon may replace my tbolt) will it also automatically return my kernel to stock. The only reason i ask is i just did a full data and cache wipe for a new rom and my new adrenaline kernel was still there, which is fine for now but not if i have to take it in.
Second: if it doesnt return to a stock kernel is there a boot.img or even a .zip that will work on clockwork for it.
I did try searching, and i do know how to unroot, I just dont know about the kernel issue once i do unroot.
edit: i did do my own full root, bloatware removed, stock kernel backup before i flashed the kernel, so as long as restoring that backup reverts it to the original kernel that is fine also.
if you use a RUU to return to stock....everything is back to stock including the kernel

yeah i found the unroot instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423 if anyone else needs them and it has the link to the ruu. I just wanted to make sure it did return it. so all is good.
For what it's worth, my son returned a rooted Droid running CM7 because it had a bad camera, he did a mail exchange and never heard a word about it from Verizon. I'm sure the first thing they do with a returned phone is burn a stock image into it even before they "test" it. Think about it, they can't possibly have someone do a forensic examination of the software on returned phones. I think the main way they have of finding modded phones are due to people admitting that they modded it. Just sayin'.
If you make a backup in CWR (Rom Manager) before flashing a new kernel then you can roll back and restore the old configuration... including kernel.
You can also flash the stock kernel from Rom Manager.
No need to RUU unless it is absolutely needed. But this will cause a lot of extra work (need to re-root, etc)

Hey everyone,
So I'm new to smartphones as the DROID Charge is my first one ever so if my questions sound stupid, that would be why. Anyway, my charge should be arriving tomorrow from amazon and I have a few questions.
My main question is this: If I root the phone, is there a way to unroot it so I can still get the verizon updates? In addition to this, after I root it and let's just say I take the ED2 update, what would happen? would it unroot itself? would something else happen?
Thanks a lot!
Yes and yes.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
thanks,
but what if you take a verizon update while you are rooted? what happens then?
You lose root
ok cool...
but lets say that i freeze or delete all that verizon crapware on it and then take an update and it unroots; will all that come back or will it stay. in addition to that, any rooted apps that are downloaded while im rooted cant be run while im not rooted right?
More likely if you root and freeze the VZ blotware with Titanium after the update Titanium wont work anyone and your bloatware will come back.
The best idea is to stay with ED1 until a root comes for ED2.
alright cool thanks..
how long do you think it'll be before they root ED2? i mean, how long does it normally take them to root things?

According to posts in another forum, the ED2 update is not a full ROM flash...users who have rooted and removed bloatware under ED1 have then accepted the ED2 update and still have the bloat gone...lost root, however and no current means of regaining.
imnuts and DroidXcon have something in the works, hopefully!
So it sounds like the only way to blow out root is to update to ED2.
OR
It sounds like if someone creates a backup non-rooted Odin package of ED1, that would also be a good way to unroot the phone?

Hey everyone im kinda new to the forums.. Anyways i just downloaded GB 2.3.3 the other day. Well after that i realized my phone wasnt rooted anymore. So i updated simpleoneclick and it wouldnt work. Anyone had any success rooting their g2x after the update?
Another person with a broken search button. Need to get that fixed.
At the present time, there is no root for the GB update. There is a way to root GB but it required going back to 2.2.2 and then loading a custom GB rom.
Ya mine has been broken for awhile.. Ive been trying to fix it but no luck.. Anyways any idea if theyre working on a root for it, and if so how long do you think itll take?

Apparently, you can flash with CMW Recovery without being rooted, and also make nandroids and restore them. You will not be able to use apps that require root like titanium backup.

Yes - flashing it has rooted your phone. I am somewhat surprised by this however. I would have thought rooting was done at a deeper level then anything in a ROM, but apparently that is not the case.
Good news is whatever the case, it works.
Recovery has nothing to do with the rooted status of your phone. Nvflash and cwm work no matter what.

Having an unlocked/unencrypted bootloader gives us G2X owners a LOT of flexibility with what can be done with our phones in terms of customization. Its one of the main reasons I couldn't wait for this phone to be released. Check out the first post in this thread over in the Atrix forum for a rundown of the differences between locked/unlocked/encrypted bootloaders:

im sorry for the noob questions but could you elaborate on the steps you took to do this? Im having no luck figuring out so far.
Or if anyone else could explain the process.
I downloaded cwm but it says my phone needs to be rooted just to use it. So im stuck because im with 2.3.3 which isnt rooted. I just wanna go back to 2.2 so i can have root agian or so i can download custom 2.3.3 roms which are rooted already.
thanks
is flashing the rooted rom would root my phone perma or it would be unroot after flashing anything over that rooted rom?
you need one click reovery to flash the cwm with nvflash
