Can we change the pixel-density with temproot? - HTC Sensation

Ive tried but can't with root explorer. Am I doing something wrong or is it just not possible without an official reboot?
I have tried using the fastboot app after applying the changes, but nothing.

Anyone wanna chime in?

I'm pretty sure that you have to reboot fully, our atleast a hot one to make changes like that. While we're on the topic, what advantages does changing the density have?

I don't think that sense will allow it. I tried it on my buddy's MT4G running sense 3.0. It wouldn't work no matter what the density was set at. Maybe after we get s-off and some sweet roms that don't run sense it should be possible.
Changing the density is like upping the resolution, kinda. It makes everything smaller so you can fit more on the screen. I did it on my HD2 and it was a serious transition back to normal when I got my sensation. You get used to the extra space and getting more information on the screen.

the easiest way is with LCD desnity from the market, but as others have said it required FULL root, cuz you need to reboot to apply changes :/
soon...

You can't get rid of them pixels. Pixels will aways be there.

LCD Density Changer relies on editing your build.prop and fully rebooting to apply the changes. I don't think we can do that without full root.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G

it'll work on any ROOTED sense/non-sense ROM. we don't have root yet, so...it won't work.

I have S-Off and full root, but LCD Density changer and others don't work- screen goes black and capacitive buttons stay lit after applying changes. Any ideas for a work around would be great...

This saddens me.
I changed the pixel density on my old G2 and the screen looked beautiful.
So maybe it isn't possible without a custom rom :/

mind you LCD density hasnt been updated in a while, just wait for the update for ease of density change, or do it manually...
either way, gotta wait for s-off :/
hopefully comes today with alpharevx/unrevoked

that would be sweet, considering HTC will probably stick with sense 2.1 in the gingerbread update for desire HD/inspire. From what I saw, desire HD should easily handle the visuals though...
you might want to add [devs only] seeing as it is not ported, and will only fail or cause problems when flashed..

Im may start working on this this weekend if I get everything else done I want to. See if I can get something to boot.
Will probably need quite a bit of kernel/init work.
And do I remember reading you need a 64 bit OS to compile a 2.3 kernel? Could be imagining things but I thought I read that somewhere. Luckily though, if thats true I just set up a 64 bit Linux box

I tried it out, it ran just as it would on a DHD... the resolution on the Pyramid is higher than the DHD/Inspire, and it wasn't scaled down, so you can't really see the dock, and the first unlock was a bit weird since there were no icons on the lockscreen to drag down to the ring, and the ring was off the screen.
It worked on AT&T's network fine though. I'm sure once some more work gets done and it fits the screen better, this will be a nice ROM, but right now it's not quite there. But, it IS only the first build and in a very early stage. Keeping an eye on this!
Here's a video someone else made of it on the DHD so you can see what I mean by things not being scaled properly for our resolution - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7P5b-e5POY
I just got my inspire and rooted it last week. I think i might flash this, Do I need eng-off or just put it on my SD card and flash it?

Hmmm. I wonder if this line in the build.prop is what is causing your display density issues???
line: ro.product.display_resolution = 4.3 inch QHD resolution
The density is set to the standard 240 DPI. That is most likely the culprit.
Just watched the video looks freaking amazing can't wait for the devs to get this thing working

Confused! Coming from iphone 4

I am changing from the iphone 4 - and have the infuse arriving from amazon tomorrow.
I used it in store and really liked it, but when i was there again today and really compared the HTC Inspire 4G vs Samsung Infuse 4G the screen on the HTC just looks so much crisper, more in line with the iphone 4. The samsung looks kind of pixelated?
Convince me I bought the right one, lol - i dont want to go through the process of returning and re-ordering!
Catherine
Its a great phone I love mine. Just make sure because your coming from a iPhone. You know how to end running tasks. I got 3 coworkers to switch from iPhone's to the Infuse and all 3 returned the phone because of its battery life. Well first off its not a 3.4 inch screen. Its 4.5 and second they never ended there processes so they would run in the background with out them even knowing. Then there battery would run down in a hour or so and they would complain to me why there phone is acting the way it does. Just remember keep a open mind when switching to Android from Apple. Its not as user friendly but over all its the better choice.
The Infuse is better due to the larger screen, weighs less, louder sound, better camera, much better battery life, and so on!
the screen is huge you dont need to hold it so close to your face like the tiny iphone screen
also you will see that the many features of android more than make up for the iphones screen res. you will learn to love the infuse screen when you see bright colors over a black background. the contrast and color depth is unbelievable.
I had the same concern when I first got my Infuse (coming from an Inspire 4G). Change the font and the LCD density, and the pixelation goes away.
Thanks guys! Makes me look forward to it again - I gifted my iPhone to my dad who desperately needed an update from his iPhone 2. I have a rooted nook color and wanted an android phone, I think (hope) I will love it

I'm pretty sure you can just download fonts from the market and install them, no root required. To change the LCD Density, you will need to root it. LCD Density is the simplest way to change your LCD Density (it's like changing your desktop resolution in Windows), but Root Tools can do that and much more. You'll have to root to use either app though.
Oh, and don't get excited about the option to change your boot animation in Root Tools; Samsung uses a proprietary format, so it is much harder to change their boot animations. I've come across a couple options, but have never tried any of them, so I can't make any recommendations.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) - LCD Density

Hi there,
I was looking through the forum without lucky and I have a question. I have a SG3 and I would like to change the LCD density from build.prop without brick my phone. So my question is if anyone know what are any possible value for this?
The default value for my last SG2 was 240, and now the SG3 comes with 320. I used to use the SG2 with 160, but I'm not sure if this will work with my SG3.
Thanks in advance, and hope that this info help to anyone else in the community.

SOLUTION:
Before change LCD Density value in build.prop make sure that you have installed Apex Launcher or Nova Launcher in your SG3. In that way your phone will not crash...

From my understanding on the Galaxy S3 if you go any lower then 240dpi you will crash your phone. Anything lower then 240 I believe would be used for tablets, and the like.
I set mine to 240. lcd density did not work. build prop change via rom toolbox did and it looks AMAZING for 10 seconds then crashes. (freezes) eventually reboots (trying to reset in adb from CWM now) suggestions?
what could be causing it to crash I REALLY want that higher effective resolution. BADLY.
running leaked JB rom
I set my GS3 LTE to 240, works really well. However there were a couple of qwerks to note:
The launcher is rubbish, changed to EXLauncher pro
I had to mod the email app to fill the screen. sadly i can't attach the modded apk to this post as it is too big.
The camera app is a little strange, but perfectly usable.
The clock app crashes on launch - very irritating, however i set alarms using the voice controls! i should install an alternative clock app.

you got it so far. use alternative launcher. use alternative clock
calculator and talk are also borked
there IS a user working on converting the apk's to work on the S3 in fact he has most of them done but they don't work on US S3's only the international S3. he says he will try to make them work for US S3's (fingers crossed)
The S3 at stock res sucks. it was MADE for 240 in my opinion.
FYI I rooted the device with I9305_CWM_Recovery.tar.md5 and CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip then changed ro.sf.lcd_density in puild.prop from 320 to 240.
for some reason there are 2 entries of ro.sf.lcd_density. I assume the first one gets parsed and the second one ignored, as I changed the second one first to no effect. eventually i changed both.

Completely agree. it seems utterly crazy to make such a nice big high res screen then just scale up all the apps as if it was designed for only people with poor eyesight. I almost put my device on ebay ready to go back to iphone before i started getting into it.
Do you have a link to the the modded files? I was just looking through the camera app dimensions definitions and I don't have the time to change those! The email app just involved 3 dimension changes.
GS3 with slimbean.
I Installed slimbean 4.3 beta.2 and it has my screen density as 245. If you take a look at the screen shot I uploaded it shows what to do for changing screen density. Hope this helps.

DPI change on Jellybean?

I sucessfully installed jellybean but I can't seem to change the lcd density..
I have in my build.prop ro.sf.lcd_density=160 and nothing happens.. I still have it set to the original, 240.
I noticed theres a new options in jellybean's build.prop ro.sf.override_null_lcd_density=1, I commented this out and also set it to 0, but still no go.
Any ideas? I've tried various apps and they all have no effect
uh, I may be wrong, but how is you changing a setting going to have a physical change on the hardware that's in your tablet?

It's NOT a physical change - Changing the LCD DPI Density has been a method used on most versions of Android for years. What rock have YOU been under?
Yep. Same here. Can't find a way to get 160 back to life.
This is pretty much a worst thing Asus could do to us. Or is it JB thing?
Don't know, but i'll try to find a solution to this as i just can't look at 240 density after using 160 for so long.
Oversized icons are really not nice :cyclops:
Hmm this might have something to do with my sensitivity issues too. Before in a certain game I could rapidly tap a button and it would go through. Now on JB it's not registering my rapid taps and I have to tap slower. Looking all over the place for a solution!

I'm on CM 10(JB 4.1.1.) and DPI change works through the build.prop without any problems. I wonder if Asus did something to block this in latest update..
Could it be related to the kernel not supporting it?
I mean, they probably changed kernel, so maybe they didn't include this in the final release.
Why is beyond me and my understanding of their logic.
I hope this is not the case.
hm.. this is hard to get used to 240 again. i hope theres a way around this

It tricks Android into making each pixel smaller. Which means all your icons, text, etc shrink on the screen. This gives you more room on your screen and makes mostly everything look a hell of a lot better. If you do a search for DPI on the general forum, you will find a thread about DPI with screen shots that show you the difference.

Why not just try out a custom Rom? At the Moment Baked BlackBean 4 and unofficial CM10 10/1 versions work very well and give you all kinds of settings and tweaks to work with as well as theme chooser. The only thing that isn't working (well or at all) is GPS and I expect that will be fixed in short order, now that the official TF700 JB update is out.

Don't get me wrong, I used CM9 on my TF101 and use it on my phone, BUT I like a stable ROM with barely any noticable issues as I really do use just about everything on my devices, including the GPS. For now, until the custom roms make a bit more headway, I'm not going to switch.
Any luck?

Agreed, any news?
Has anyone contacted Asus about it and asked?
Or, has anyone tested DPI changes on other Jelly Bean devices such as the Nexus 7 and seen if it works there (which would indicate Asus intentionally disabled it)?

You could root and then use a build prop editor to change the density. Or you could wait until roms start appearing (PA, etc). You know, give it time, it should blossom

Found my perfect setting of 400. Didn't really like the huge icons by default, and 320 was way too low for me. 400 suits me fine, and replicates roughly my nexus4.
Don't know why Google changed this personally. Never changed DPI before, is there anything I should be aware of now I have done so?

Google changed it because the screen is higher resolution. The only things to be aware of are the possibility of Play Store having compatibility issues. If you get that, just return to stock DPI, update apps, and go back to what you like. The other thing is that it affects everything, so some apps might change their interface as a result.

If the screen resolution is higher, why could I fit less on my desktop than my Nexus4? I use Dashclock and it chops off data that was always visible on my N4. Seemed like a backwards step.
