finding the right tablet for me on the cheap? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I've been wanting to get my feet wet in android tablet land for quite some time. I would like the following features:
pdf/ebook reading with bookmarking / highlighting / notes
GPS (I already have a bluetooth gps module if that helps) for dash-mounted in-car navigation
bluetooth keyboard support (official or unofficial i really don't care but it's got to be there).
fast web surfing / display effects
the ability to run honeycomb (even if it's unsupported)
preferably some kind of decent camera on for skype / snapshots though i suppose i could do without it...
I have not yet fully decided on a 7" or 10" tablet but I would find some additional convenience with the smaller of the 2 as I plan to do some reading on this. also, as I will be doing lots of reading, I need a display resolution of at least 1024x600 and aprox. equivalent dpi or better for 10" tablet.
I've looked at the nook color and it seems like a really nice tablet but it seems kind of sluggish for the really high price of $250... if i could find one of these in the $150-200 range I could probably be convinced to go with one of these.
I've also looked at the viewsonic G tablet and was impressed with the underlying tegra2 hardware but very disappointed with the display viewing angle, and to a slightly lesser extent display resolution. I think it's going price of ~250 would be warranted if the display were actually good (high resolution and good viewing angle).
Does anybody have any other ideas for very inexpensive, high resolution, fast tablets that I should be looking at, or perhaps some kind of epic deals? (i'm ok with used if i could find something i'm happy with even).
Thanks,

CES - What new tablet excites you? / Whats your next tablet?

Curious to see what all of you are anticipating... I have been watching the viewsonic thread now for a while, even poked around in the code, various builds, etc. Havent pulled the trigger because of the "poor" screen.
Wanted to know which of you guys are going to roll to a new tablet once they are all announced - especially since most will be tegra based (all work done here will not be lost I can assume)..
I'm excited about MSI's WindPad 110. It seems to be very similar to the G-Tablet, so hopefully it's at the same price point.
I'm also looking forward to Asus's tablet lineup. 1280x800 FTW!
Whats funny is that all the videos I have seen regarding these new tabs I just dont see that much of an impressive screen..
Question I have is - are they going to be better than the viewsonic gtablet?
What do you guys think? I know within 1 or 2 generations after of course it will improve but what about Gen 1 of these devices? I have seriously not pulled the trigger because of the display..

Gtablet with honeycomb would excite me if viewsonic surprise us at the show. Keep dreaming for a while i guess.
Unless the screen changes significantly, I'll probably stay with the G-Tab.
Most of what is coming for 11 is Tegra 2 based, so the basic framework will be the same.
I like the Notion ink adam, but I'll hold off until it hits the review rounds.

Right now.. Im staying away from the GTablet... I cant see spending 400 on a unit that looks horrible... Notion Ink... Hopefully its not vapor-ware... i know it will go live but we will see how much momentum they have for the funding to continue development of the platform... which is already over saturated with device makers...
Moto Xoom is what I'll be watching. My Gtablet will serve it's purpose as my device that will enable me to wait and be more picky when it comes to my next tablet. My main concern was seeing what Honeycomb looks and runs like so I think I will be able to see that with the Gtablet.
Looks like Vizio is getting into the tablet fray also.

I'll be at CES. I cannot say any new tablet has me excited. Based on my N900 and G Tablet, here is what I'm looking for in my next portable device:
Tegra2 or ARM9 w/ hardware acceleration
Hardware keyboard
FM receiver
4G (?!)
GPS
Open access to hardware
No proprietary ports
1024x600 (min)
FM transmitter
USB charger
Gtab is holding its specs pretty nicely from what we see on the coming tablets from other manufacturer. 512mb internal, dual core tegra, 1024x600, 10" screen, gtab already has all that which mean we should be future proof for another year not to mention ours should be capable for the next honeycomb os. thanks to our dual core tegra cpu.

I agree that the gTablet has most of the features I would want in a tablet. There are a few key features which bother me though:
*Screen - poor viewing angles
*Camera - poor quality and form factor doesn't support filming others
*Video Chat - looks like this is a software issue -- hoping skype pulls through
And a few small things:
*HDMI - requires a dock; wish it was built-in
*Kickstand - would be nice for watching a movie
The NotionInk Adam looks like it should solve most of those issues for me. I pre-ordered the one with the PixelQi display and if you can view it in full sunlight, I'm hoping it will be viewable inside! The camera also swivels which will be nice for shooting pics/video of things other than myself. The Adam has HDMI directly on it which will be nice for portability.
Hopefully Skype comes out with a tablet-friendly video chat app as the higher resolution camera should be nice for video chatting. They haven't shown much on the camera quality though and higher megapixels doesn't necessarily translate to higher quality pictures. I'm hoping their using a decent lens + camera. A kickstand would be nice for when I'm viewing movies, but I can probably live without it.

do you like the 10" screen or wish it was smaller

Still looking at the tablets. Part of me wants the biggest screen possible for browsing. But the flip side is the bigger the tablet, the less likely I will be to take it outside the house. How portable is your table and do you wish it was bigger, smaller or is the size just right?
Personally I think 10 inches is just right, I have played with the 7 inch tablets, I think the screen is to small. Anything bigger then 10 wouldn't be portable enough in my opinion, could get bulky too. Maybe if it was 12 and still the same thickness and weight, which will be possible later down the road of course.
For me 10 inches is right in that goldilocks zone. Video looks great at 10, Netflix is awesome.
i had a 7 in Sammy tab and I thought it was the perfect size for holding. The xoom is a little harder to hold in one hand. I guess it all depends on what you prefer to be doing on your device. If your into books and on the go internet emails I'd use 7 inch more. The 10 inch is perfect for movies and spreadsheets documents and big games and such.
i used to think 10" was too big, but then I got a case that didnt suck. My view on 7" is that I may as well just use my phone, which has a 4" and some change screen.
Ditto with the idea of 7 inch tablets for the ebook readers. Personally the 10.1 inch screens are perfect for me. I mean yes, the Xoom is a little heavier than the other Honeycomb tablets, but that's because it was the first of it's kind, but it works for me. I have used a 7 inch tablet before and it was not right for me. 10.1 inch screen sizes are perfect: not too large, but not too small, just right.
The future should bring a tablet with adjustable screen sizes. Lol! That way you wouldn't have to choose one or the other.

Well, I think the Xoom is a bit thicker and heavier (only a bit) because it has more ports and better hardware (cameras, true gps) than some of the others, not so much because it was the first (read older). I have a 7" tegra two tablet and it's really cute, but the Xoom is the one I use, not just daily but constantly.

That's very true indeed. The Xoom is an all out beast no doubt. That's why the newer build of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is thinner and lighter, because they stripped it of more powerful hardware such as the camera for example. The Xoom has a 5MP rear facing camera, meanwhile the Galaxy Tab 10.1 only has a 3MP rear facing camera. And other hardware related things as you mentioned. You are totally correct.
Down the road they will be able to pack all the power and features into a thin light weight device. I'd say with the quad core, 3D, ICS, and high resolution Android tablets and phones on their way... we are closing in on that gap of thin, light weight, extremely powerful devices.

When they come out, I hope I can afford one of them...:^)
I loved my old 7" for gaming, reading, etc. But it was failing for me on work related items. the 10" lets me read PDF's, type a little easier (still using swype), watch NetFlix in between appointments, etc.
With regards to portability my 7" went into my cargo pocket on my shorts. The Xoom I carry around in a stand/case that looks like a normal paper portfolio which works well and I haven't forgotten it anywhere. I honestly leave the laptop at home with TeamViewer setup and remote in if I need more than the tablet can do.
I wouldnt mind a play with a Flyer or similar just to see how much difference there is between the two..
10 inch is perfect for me, the 7s just feel like a really big phone to me.

Current Xoom size is in the Goldilocks zone for me...I like the form factor, too.
Dont get me wrong, I really like my Xoom, but I also have a DHD so my question would be get a smaller phone and get a smaller tablet so the whole lot is more portable or just stick with the sizes I have..
For a while the size of the Xoom was an issue for me. It simply wasn't "transportable" enough.
I even got one of those cheapo "ePad" 7-inch tablets from Hong Kong just so I could have the tablet experience in a pocketable form factor.
Anyway, the smaller tablet gave up the ghost, and I again began using my Xoom everyday.
The changing seasons has been a BIG help for me. Why? Jackets! I have an off-the-rack coat/jacket and two Scottevest items all with interior pockets big enough to hold my Xoom in the Motorola standard or AYL leather case without issues (and without it looking like I have a tablet in my pocket). Therefore, I can literally carry my Xoom everywhere without a man-bag!

I can't really advise about the phone because my phone is never special to me--just a phone--but the Xoom is really a perfect size. Small enough to carry everywhere and large enough to be really functional.
10" is just right. now, if there's a clam type tablet just like Sony's, then perhaps up to 12"
any more and it would have a very cumbersome surface area once opened.
the weight though cannot exceed the current weight of the xoom. as the xoom is already on the heavy side as it is now.

I have both a 7" tab and the 10" Xoom, and there is not even a comparison! I find myself not even using the 7" tab anymore (and they have all the same apps on)! If you go with the 7" I think you will find yourself wishing you had a 10". (lol)
I like the 10" for gaming because you can see whats under your thumbs while playing but then sometimes games or apps ask you to swipe in the middle or press a button and you have to change your position just for that command ( thats dev problem maybe they think you´re on a 7" screen and can do that swipe without changing your grip).
As a reader the 10" its really great you dont have to zoom the xoom (lol) to see well. i have a 7" huawei and i always have to zoom to read a pdf or a book. But then some readers dont have the change of page via tap and ask you to swipe from one side to another and thats a problem.
Also i find it really hard to type if it isnt in my lap. i got the thumb keyboard app but sometimes i wish there where no buttons in the middle because they are unreacheable (is there an app for something like the courier keyboard prototype from microsoft?) Anyway if you rotate the screen to write like in your phone then prepare to have thumb abs because its heavy in any tablet even the ipad.

is the LG G-Slate (Optimus Pad) any good? Worth ~$400?

IIRC the bootloader and whatnot is locked, and ICS might not come for a while (if ever), but the overall design/feel of it is nice, and I really like the optional media dock for it (it'd be nice to use it as a clock-radio on my nightstand). I understand it's not the lightest or best-spec'd or anything like that, I'm just wondering if there's any major flaws/disadvantages to it, like horrible battery life. Camera quality isn't too important, especially since there's two of them for 3D pics. And the Tegra 2 should be enough power for me, as the most powerful use I'd expect would be high-res videos?
One concern I have is app compatibility - 1280x768 isn't really popular (it's either 1280x720 or 1280x800 usually).
Suggestions for tablets with similar (worthwhile) docks would be appreciated. I know the Galaxy Tabs all basically have one available, but I'm not a fan of the proprietary connector.

[Q] iPad is definitely too much for me. Should I sell it?

Hello!
I am a happy iPad 4 owner but I am wondering if it's the case to sell it.
I mainly need a tablet to watch movies "on the go", as I really don't like do any kind of work on it. I love my notebook, my keyboard, my external display
I am thinking about selling my iPad and get an Android cheaper alternative. Size 10", with a good resolution (at least HD) and capable of playing full HD and MKV.
Is there something you would suggest? Web browsing is not my priority. Weight, price, screen and battery are
I need at least 5 hours with no wi-fi.
Thank you for your help!

I'll give a shameless plug for the tablet I own and love, the LG G Pad 8.3. Smaller than a 10", but that's the point. Especially compared to an iPad, and even more especially when you consider watching movies. The iPad has a 4:3 ratio, while the LG has a 16:10 ratio (most Android tablets have a 16:9), which is much better for watching movies because there'll be less wasted space on the screen. I'm sure you've noticed how much useless space there is when watching a letterboxed movie on your iPad. The G Pad can be found for extremely reasonable prices these days.
As for full 10" Android tablets, these will cost quite a bit more, but will still seem a good deal compared to iPads. You can get the Samsung Tab Pro 10.1 for under $400, and for $450 there's the Tab S 10.5". The latter will probably be a better platform for watching movies (and everything else, really) because of the AMOLED display, which'll have blacker blacks and more contrast.
Regardless of your choice, Androids are great for entertainment, largely due to the widescreen aspect ratio, and also because most have microSD slots to store more stuff, you can load stuff from your computer via simple drag and drop (no iTunes BS), and because even if it doesn't natively support the file type you're trying to play, you can get a player (MX Pro, for example) that'll play practically anything you can throw at it.

Is the GPad 8.3 okay for MKV/1080P files? :silly:
I had both Nexus 7 2012 & 2013 and actually I find the aspect ratio/size really not suitable for me. It was like having a giant phone.
I also have a Note 3 so that's why I am concerned about 7/8 inches tablet. However the GPad looks really promising

It took some searching, but I found a 1080p .mkv video (the nature of which shall remain unspoken), and the stock player plays it fine (as does MX Player).

I like the LG 8.3 because it's about the size/weight as the Nexus 7 tablets, yet with its smaller bezels, packs a significantly larger screen. I really don't like the ~10" tablets because holding them becomes fatiguing after a short time. But the 8.3 is still comfortably holdable with one hand, be it in portrait or landscape mode, and maximizes the screen size within that space. That's just my personal preference. Obviously a 10" screen is better for watching things, but if you have to hold it the whole time, then things can get painful. The size/weight of the 8.3 is manageable and gives you a good compromise between the 7" and 10" devices. The Samsung Tab S 8.4 is undoubtedly the king of these "inbetween" tablets, having a larger screen, yet being smaller, thinner, and lighter than the LG 8.3. But it also costs significantly more (yet less than iPads if you want more than 16gb storage).
And as I said, the aspect ratio is a big consideration you need to make when looking at tablets to watch movies on. The LG 8.3 will give you nearly the same horizontal screen size as your iPad, yet is over an inch and a half narrower, most of which'll be letterboxed black anyway. The iPad's 4:3 ratio is great for playing games and browsing, but wastes a lot of space when watching movies/tv, unless you're watching Magnum PI or other TV shows from the pre-HD days, or movies that were cropped for TV or directed by Kubrick. Anything else, and a 16:9 or 16:10 Android tablet (or Windows, but let's not go there) is better if your main concern is watching movies.

Loved this tablet/PC

This is my review in my own words coming from the owner of a Nexus 9 and Nexus 10 tablet and a android user for over 20 years and Yes I received this tablet at a discounted price but in NO WAY does that change my views or thoughts on how I review this product, with that said this is the perfect tablet for first time users or like me "power users". This tablet is $81.99 and based of that price all this tablet does as far as performance and ease of use and just overall build quality it deserves 5 stars. As a heavy tablet user of $700 tablets I find myself using this tablet over my other tablets mainly because of the screen size which is 10.1in compared to my largest tablet that is also 10in BUT in all honesty the screen (as in colors) looks better on this tab. As as android developer this tablet offers "tech people" lots of fun too as this tablet is running Android 5.1 Lollipop and is pretty fast at handling tasks with its Quad Core processor and 1GB RAM. I am trying to keep review in simple terms but if you like to root and add modifications to your devices this tablet/pc is also very easy to root and mod. A few specs on the tablet I liked were, Quad Core Processor 1.3GHZ/Google Android 5.1 Lollipop Operating System/Dual Cameras: Front 0.3 MP and Rear 2.0 MP but picture quality is not great but again this is a tablet not a camera and most every tablet I have owned in the past which is over 10 I never use the tablet for picture taking but if needed this does take good pictures and does the job/*8 GB capacity, extendable to 32 GB with an SD card* This is a HUGE feature and not offered on most tablets out there and neither of my $700 tablets offer extendable storage/5500mAh is a nice size and Im very much a gamer and my battery lasts a full day so im very happy with battery life. This is a tablet/Pc which means you also get a keyboard/case with this tablet, I don't use these often but for reviewing purposes I used the USB driven keyboard case which I found to be a good design and worked very well, I really liked the protection the case provided and loved the pull out stand on back of case for watching movies or using tablet as a PC and the magnetic closure worked well. They keyboard layout was nice and keys seem very soft when typing and had no issues navigating around screen. Tablet fit securely in case and also liked that the case has 2 holes or loops which are used for a stylus which I use when using a tablet. WiFi and BLUETOOTH worked as expected and had no issues connecting to multiple routers and at least 5 BLUETOOTH devices. Overall I was very impressed with this tablet, I put it through some very heavy loads to test speed and it handled everything I threw at it and PLEASE watch video to really show off tablet/PC in action and also show screen resolution and how screen reacts to scrolling and just a better overall view of the whole package. iRULU has absolutely wonderful customer care, I emailed them numerous times with questions and always received a fast/courteous reply. I really wanted people to see this in product decryption also " Tablet is GMS Tested and Certified by Google to guarantee consistent quality, assure reliability, and maximize privacy protection for secure browsing and communications"
