I am on Rogers and I recently got a Captivate I found the wiki site for the roms but I cant figure out which one would be the best one to use. So some insight into them would be great.

If you want the fastest phone experience look at the i9000 roms with the setiron kernel, that kernel has every feature/tweak you'll ever need.
It depends a lot on what you mean by "Best." After reading a lot of the threads on different ROMs, I went with Cognition 2.4 because it had the feature set that matched my needs, and had the easiest installation method. It was also the only one I could find that used ClockworkMod exclusively and didn't require Odin. I don't have anything against Odin, but if I have an option to use one program or another exclusively, I'm going to go with that if for no other reason than less can go wrong.
There may be some that are faster, but even under stock, my Captivate was wicked fast. Cognition also seems to have a huge amount of support, more than the others I've seen.
I am not sure that you could classify one as being the "best". I have flashed a couple of the Cog builds and am now rocking the Tayutama rom. The Cog seems to be the most popular, but I am getting better function for what I want with the Tayutama. Don't mean I won't flash again, just gonna enjoy this one for a while.
I think any rom is going to vary from phone to phone. Some people have trouble flashing them, others experience gps issues, others have problems with bluetooth. I flash, use my phone normally, and if I run across a problem I look for a fix. I am sure there might be problems with my phone that I will never see (bluetooth for example) as there are probably many features I will never use.
Flash it. Use it. Dump it or keep it. Opinions are great, but it is going to be your experience with the rom that matters.
Basically anything but Cognition.

For me, Cognition v2.2 b6. GPS works, Email and both Email and Browser works when switching between WiFi and 3G, and it's just clean, stable, and very reliable. The keyword is "for me". I do a lot of email, web browsing, SMS, MMS, photos, 720p videos, YouTube, [edit] plus MobileAP with friends who have no, or limited data plans [/edit] etc. Give it a shot if you're able to use it on Rogers.
Of the i9000 ROMs, only Raw Steel has fixed haptic on the home button, correct?

Thanks everybody for posting opinions on this. I still havent made a decision yet and I was kinda hoping to hear from somebody on Rogers but nobody came forward...ah well.
By best what I was getting at was pretty much most efficient rom (ie no/little lag) and fast speeds and inproving on the battery life of my phone.
Edit: So looking at some of the posts I can consider using ROMS that arent Rogers specific as well on my phone???

That part is definitely true. The ROM I'm using is not by any means carrier-specific. I can't speak for Rogers, but AT&T put a lot of crapware on my phone that I'm thankful to be without. I suppose if Rogers puts useful stuff on their phones, you'll need a Rogers-specific ROM, otherwise not. Only caveat I can think of is that it's good if you get a ROM that's Captivate-specific. There will be more internal consistency. For example, the i9000 has a front-facing camera that the Cappy doesn't.
Are froyo based roms fairly stable? I ask because I'm getting a Captivate for myself and a not-so-tech-literate family member, and I'd rather not have to deal with any additional problems. Should I flash one of the 2.1 based Cognition roms? Or Doc's 2.2 rom? Or something else entirely? Mainly looking for battery life improvements.
Cognitions 2.3b4 rom is absolutely incredible. EVERYTHING works! and its very fast. The fact that everything including the GPS works flawlessly is just amazing. I dunno if any other rom has been able to achieve that...

You may want to stick with the stock JH7 rom then. When I had it on my phone, that was the best battery life and best GPS performance I got. Now I'm running Cog 2.2B7 and it runs fine, although battery life is lacking and there is a little bit of lag from time to time, but all in all its solid. I love the fact that it has the mobile AP, which AT&T will be sure to strip out from their version of 2.2 when/if it ever comes out....
Couldn't disagree more. Cognition 2.3b3 has been a dream come true for my Captivate.
I have looked over many, Many boards today and am left with an impression that I should be able to go to Cognition 2.3b4 with ODIN, but not a One Touch ODIN.
I DLed Standalone ODIN and went to where the ROM file was downloadable. But when I go on in the process it is obvious I should be seeing a PIT.pit file and others to populate into the different areas of the ODIN interface... I can't find them in the download I have so far.
I have gone looking for these files or a zipped grouping of them, but no luck.
I think I am missing something simple in how this process should go.
Please help?
PS. I opted to NOT go with the ClockWorkMod route as it talks about only doing it if you have a previous version. The last time I did anything to the phone I did the leaked Froyo 2.2 ODIN One Click. That leaves me unsure if I meet the minimum requirements for the ClockWorkMod option. (Plus I don't have root.)
Thanx in advance for the help.

I got this from NorCal Einstein on another thread......
Cognition 2.3 Beta4 IS NOT ODIN FLASHABLE. Unless designgears releases a ODIN version to use with the stand-alone, you are not going to have success trying to use the CWM file with ODIN.
You don't have to flash via CWM while you are on Cognition, that's a mis-understanding. Personally, I flash my phone back to stock (JH6), and then use CWM to flash to Cognition. I don't know what you mean by minimum requirements for CWM option either...you have a Captivate right?...it works right?...you can run ClockWorkMod Recovery on your phone.
Bottom line: At this time, 2.3 Beta4 CANNOT be flashed using ODIN.
Just can't take it any more! I swore I'd wait until the official Froyo release before starting to flash custom ROMs but this thread has finally broken my resolve. Currently downloading one now and will flash tomorrow.

Ok, I know the official build isnt out yet, but I do know there are a slew of ROMs floating around, some of them on XDA. Any suggestions as to which one to go with? Any pros/cons of doing this? Just trying to find out, cause I saw the post on Engadget that linked to a closed thread here about the Froyo leak, and whatnot, so what ROM should I go with, or just wait a little for the official one to come out? And what abut Gingerbread? Should I even bother with Froyo?
Sorry, just got a lot of questions now that I've got my Captivate
Thanks guys
The official build is out for Bell Canada, I would try to get a ROM based on that.
Definitely a custom rom. The leak is really buggy
i agree with wvumaniac79. been running the leaked froyo and been troubleshooting it on a nearly daily basis (thank god for this forum!). some things i havent been able to solve and just lived with (still nervous about flashing, etc). but my patience is wearing thin to the point it'll overthrow my nervousness of re-flashing a new rom.
do a custom rom and you'll be happy.
Thanks for the info guys.
@vieve - I dont think you can flash a ROM for Canadian phones on an American phone can you? I know I couldnt with my old HTC TP2.
Anyone got any suggestions as to what Rom to use? Afaik, isnt Cognition the most popular one right now? Any bad things with flashing?
If I'm not mistaken the new perception rom is based off a build from Canada. Its made by design gears the same that does cognition. The newest cognition is awesome that's what I'm running on right now. Just test the waters and if you get stuck the forum is here for support.

Ok so perception and cognition are by same dev teams, so either one is a good one to do? Im assuming because theyre names are different that there are some differences between them? I was looking at cognition but ill give the other a look. Thanks

The cognition b4 was perfect for me. I didn't have any problems.
My personal favorite is the aosp cm6 spices rom, gives the look and feel of stock android. But cognition is good too
Alrighty, well Im gonna try Cognition real quick, and see how it runs... if all else fails, or something goes wrong with the phone, i can always flash back to stock eclair right?
Correct. I have though I bricked my phone a few times, but I always figure it out. This is my last ditch effort that always works for me every time If I think i bricked my phone.
Download Odin 1 click. Install samsung drivers, if you haven't already. Take the battery, sim card, and sd card out of your phone. Start Odin 1 click on your computer. plug the usb cable into the computer, but not the phone. Put the battery back into the phone. Hold the volume up and down buttons in. While holding those buttons, plug the usb cable into your phone. Your phone should turn on in download mode and be recognized by odin without even touching the power button on your phone. Then you can restore.
You probably won't need that advice, but if something goes wrong, I though I would save you a mini-panick.
The newest cognition 2.3b1-6 is running on captivate builds. Cog 2.4 is based off a vibrant build. Perception is based off i9000 builds. 2.4 was buggy for some but worked great for others. Perception is practically brand new only been around for a couple of days and doesn't quite work flawlessly YET. Hope this helps.

I agree. The most stable cog I used was 2.3b4. I never used b5 or 5.5. b4 was rock solid. b6 is faster, but has issues.
I got Cog b6 (latest one atm) running right now, and it seems to be running just fine.. I think my only issue is battery calibration, which Im in the process of fixing right now..
have to say, i like froyo a lot better then eclair, and not having touchwiz is soooooooo nice
currently running cogb6 and everything has been flawless so far. surprisingly, I haven't run into a single problem yet. also, flashing it w/ rom manager was dead easy
Yeah, i was pretty amazed at how easy it was and even more amazed at how much better it runs than the stock rom. About the only issue i have is the random shut off issue, which seems to be hardware related since it happened on stock eclair and on cogb6. A quick power on, restart and it works fine.
I really like cog. Runs great. Two complaints i have though. The musix player app that comes with stock eclair has a pull down control on the lock screen while the one in cog doesnt, even though they look like the same app. That and using the music shortcut in the Car Home app doesnt work (im guessing that the stock music app isnt installed?). Two minor grumbles, but something i can live with. Have to say its really really really really really nice to have gotten rid of touchshiz and atts bloatware. Touchwiz looks nice and all but damn, i love the stock android launcher and lock screen. That stupid swipe to unlock screen was killing me.
Ah well, im ranting. Regardless, this rom is great. Thanks for the input guys. Its greatly appreciated.
And yes, i did just type all this from my phone. :-D

Cog 2.3b6 is good...
Perception build 4 is good... fast has a better modem for it...
both done by DG both good... best thing todo is flash till you find one you like and fits what you want it to do.. other than that have fun with whatever rom you choose and enjoy it

I believe the reason that pulldown CD on the lockscreen for the music player doesn't work bc its part of touchwiz. No touchwiz no nifty CD animation. As far as car home goes I'm not sure.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
U can get the pull down CD on cognition 2.3b6 along with the puzzle piece notifications. They aren't in there now because the dev went back to the stock aosp lock screen instead of the touchwiz (aka "glass") lock screen. You just have to replace the android.policy.jar file in /system/framework/ with root explorer or some other method. U can get the file from an older cognition rom that had it or the stock rom.
Axura is a blazing fast totally tricked out rom. Ran cog and perception and both good but try Axura and you'll see what I mean.

So I got a little note today: new version of Gingerbread to update!
So I did.
Not thinking that it would unroot my phone, break my google voice, my swype, and otherwise wreak havoc on my life.
How do I get back what I had? It wasn't broke, why did I need to fix it?
Has anyone else had problems with 2.3.3? If i just root it the way I did last time (flashed clockwork without breaking open the bootloader (?), will it work?
WT
i ve installed gingerbread on my htc n have no problem,
maybe u should see the instruction carefully
Thanks for the reply.
There are no instructions.
My question - specifically - is around re-rooting the phone - if I will need to flash a different clockworkmod - and around why swype is broken, and if people think it will be fixed soon (from the swype side, presumably)
I already downloaded the previous version of voice and installed it with astro - it works again, thankfully. a little miffed that I've lost swype.
wondering what other nexus s owners are experiencing? especially those who rooted.
WT
Also, the screen definitely looks more off-white.
Can someone please enumerate the advantages of the update? NFC only? and now facebook doesn't sync? I'm not sure that was enough to update. Are other rooted nexus S owners avoiding this and flashing cyanogen?
There are certainly issues with 2.3.3 and some people are a bit fed up with them. Swype problems can usually be resolved by a re-install of the software. The Nexus S colour temperature change was intentional to make the appearance more accurate although i'm not sure everybody is having the same experience as a result. Some love it, some loathe it. Perhaps it's not consistent?
You can re-root by flashing the su.zip from chainsDD which at least solves that issue.
CM7 itself is not perfect yet but it's damn near close. Expect a finished release based around 2.3.3 sometime soon. I'm using the Release Candidate on my N1 and i've never been happier with my device.
Thanks. I'll have to oem unlock though, correct? Had been able to avoid that in 2.3.2 which I kind of liked.

You'd have to as you'd need to install a custom recovery to install the .zip. Aren't the Nexus S Bootloaders relockable? I'm sure i read that somewhere.
Hey people,
This is for us Wind phone users.
SFB is to bring the phone back to a pre-OR rooted state correct?
So we have one for our phones?
If someone has an 2.1 nandroid of just after they rooted and OR installed.. I would really like it.. I think I lost my original.
James
Here's the Stock Wind ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20930893&postcount=59
thank you! I did not find that post in my searches.
I tried to load some of these fake ICS like rom builds last night and crashed the phone.
So I had to go back to stock.. used the Brightpoint SBF .. worked fine, and you know.. after all the playing I have done with the phone.. it was simple and FAST.. but then quickly 2.1 eclair became too simple and I remember why I am playing with ROMS
James
Which ROMs are you playing with? I agree, 2.1 is just not developed enough but 2.2 seems to be perfect for this device. I've played with the CM6 Rom (which would give me random freezes) and the Bravo one (which I'm currently using and is my personal favourite).
you need to keep an eye on the apps you have running in the background
that's why you experience those random slow downs, it doesn't actually freeze
unless you really mean freeze as in you need to wait for more than 5 minutes and still not back to normal and need to take out the battery to reboot
because if it's so, then i don't have that problem
Thanks for the rom I need this.
CM6 was the first I installed and I can't rule out the possibility that it slowed down on me but bravo seems more stable and more polished, like if the phone came stock with it I probably wouldn't try anything else. Not a lot of eye candy, but our device simply doesn't have the hardware to be so pretty. Plus im not eager to use roms that don't use our hardware (buttons, leds, etc.)
Bravo is a really good ROM, no need to apologize.
Hmm I didn't mean to sound like I didn't appreciate CM6. I can understand why so many like it, and I am glad there are people who are willing to give some time to make our phones even better than the day we bought them.
I want to give the miui rom a try too. Can anyone comment on its functionality(especially other Wind users)?
Sent from my modded Herotab C8. (genesis) using XDA App
I find that the MIUI rom is a tad slow and unresponsive. The good news is that just about everything works. Lack of memory causes frequent slowdowns and crashes though.
Personally, I've had trouble getting WIND 3g working on everything but CM6, miui and bravo... I don't know why.
hey guys... my question is twofold:
1) i find all the nandroid, sbf, everything a bit confusing... and im just wondering how to use this wind stock rom to bring back my phone to the original wind rom, is it as simple as putting the file into the Openrecovery/Updates folder and booting into Open Recovery and Applying the update? or will just doing that mess things up?
2) a few months back i installed the cm6 rom for xt720, since then ive had huge problems with the radio - such as not being able to make calls or send texts. calls and texts will usually eventually work - depending on where i am, but i have to try them several to several dozen times before they do. i checked out my radio baseband and it is not the same as it should be for wind. will reflashing to this stock wind rom reset my baseband as well? i tried using the baseband update from this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1241685) to reset the baseband, but it didnt actually change it.
thanks for anyone who can answer these (noobish) questions
Not sure if you got a reply or not..
With the original ROM you need to use an SBF - I have it, it has been posted here.
Search and you will find the tools you need to re-flash - you need a windows computer, and some software you can download - a clean original ROM cannot be flashed by OR because OR is not in the phone originally.
2. YES putting the phone back to original will be truly original.
James
Hey guys. I switched from my slow, glitchy, and just aging captivate to the nexus S a few days ago, and I love it.
There are a couple things I miss though - the big one being the quick setting widgets in the drop down menu. I don't care if it's an app/widget from the market, or something I have to flash in to the rom. I just want those settings up there.
Is there a way to add those without flashing another rom? I like stock gingerbread (and I'll be switching to ICS when it comes out OTA for 9020A) and I don't want to flash a custom rom like CM or something. I'm rooted, but other than that I'm stock 2.3.6.
Other things I miss are a predictive dialer, and swype. If you can help me out there too I'd be greatly appreciative!
Edit: Oh, and the music controls shown in the menu would be nice too! (but only if it will work for google music)
When I moved to the NS from a Vibrant I felt the same way. There is no way to do it without some modding and I don't remember ever seeing a simple flashable zip to add it to GB. I ended up having a love hate relationship with CM7 but have moved to ICS and there is a mod to add it to some ICS roms in the dev section. I have yet to bother adding it.
Anyway, yes it can be done but not without some flashing or modding but if you aren't wanting to do that you are out of luck.
You can get similar functionality to pics with widget locker or extended controls, you get an icon or space in the status bar though. GB doesn't support it.
Music widget as above is available in stock ics too.

I really like stock, but I can flash if I *have* to... I've had a love hate relationship with CM myself, I felt like it took a little too much effort to keep up and running.. With the Google apps packs, and the nighties and constant backing up and flashing, you know. Is CM up to ICS for the Nexus S 9020a yet?
I also recently came from the captivate. I was also determined to stay stock and wait for the ics ota but....
The development for the ns is light years ahead of what you and I were used to and i am impressed after flashing a pretty much stock ics rom with a custom kernel. No toggles in the drop down but it sure is nice having everything working like it should. Fast and smooth! Peter Alphonso's ics
