I have had my Samsung Galaxy S i9003 for a month and my soft keys stop working!!!!
every time i i press the home key the other two soft keys light up. but when i press the soft keys they just do not respond. it is really frustrating!
is there any cure for this problem?
Try Factory Reset first...
Hope that works
Uhmmm not sure if this will work but get sgs tools and upgrade your touchscreen version? I think that's right I'm not sure, but just mess with the app until you find something that upgraded your soft keys? I forgot its been a while. Sgs isn't working right now because I'm on miui :/ sorry

i found the solution.. one is by doing full factory reset.. or updating your phone.. and if this does not work then the screen has to be replaced. as the small film inside the phone has got damaged..
why dont work it
Common complaint with the Samsung Galaxy's unfortunately, and maybe even some other Samsung types.
For my i9000m, the "return" soft key won't work if certain apps are running in the background. I know for sure that WhatsApp is one of them, especially if there is a pending message. I think CSipSimple unfortunately is another one.
Try going to Settings>Apps>Manage running services and kill anything that is non-essential. If that doesn't work, try temporarily un-installing the apps that run in the background and restarting the phone.
I found which apps cause problems by process of elimination. Luckily the the problematic ones are not ones I really need.
EDIT: Just realized that Settings>Apps>Manage running services does not show all running apps. I used Astra's Task Killer to get a complete list of running services. Sure enough, I installed CSipSimple yesterday and it was running in the background and killing my soft key functionality.

Hi all,
Few days ago I used Odin to go back to the stock Rom.
Since then the buttons p, mostly the back button, are randomly pressed when I'm not touching them.
I tried to use Odin again, flashed other roms and even restored the system to a Rom that worked fine, but the problem repeats in all of them.
Any ideas?
Tnx

Bad Hardware= warranty replacement.
This isn't the right place for this, but you can emulate something like this for pointless fun. Try running this command:
adb shell monkey 3000
and marvel as your phone flips out.
I have the same problem I saw a thread a while back saying that the problem stems from moisture in the phone
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Interesting thing about the moisture, would explain why my phones search button will do this for 1/2 - 2 days and then stop for 1-2 weeks at a time.

ya I have the same thing with my search button. But it will press in storms of 10+ which is annoying but not as bad as home or back
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I had it happen on my first Captivate with the back key, it actually freaked out so much the phone was unusable . As long as it can be reproduced they will replace it no questions asked. Just make sure you are on stock and have done a master clear.
Edit: this was without any moisture issues, before snow hit etc
I have the same problem when using 2.1 then flashed 2.2 and zero problem. you can try flash to fix it.
Hi, I started having similar problems. But with my Power button only. It doesn't press by itself, but when i press it sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. BUT it doesn't seem to be a hardware problem because the first time it happened, i tried reflashing the kernel and everything was back to normal again, after 2 months here comes the problem again. I was able to fix it after a Hard reset using *2767*3855#, but later on i decided to do a factory data wipe and the power button key started going bonkers again. So I tried doing the hard reset trick to try and fix it again, but sadly this time it didn't work. I also tried flashing back to stock, master clearing, wiping cache and dalvik cache, wiping data. Trying to bring everything back to stock. But the problem still persists, I can't find a solution. Is there some code that I can't seem to reset that's causing this kind of problem. Hope someone can help me. My phones unusable and it's making me go crazy trying to find the problem and fixing it

The fact that it comes and goes probably means it is a hardware problem and not a software problem

I was having the same problem with my home button. I tried everything above to fix it. The only thing that has worked so far is updating my phone to stock 2.2 using kies. My home button was acting up 2 to 3 times a day and now it hasnt acted once yet.

But sometimes it starts working flawlessly right after a flash or wipe. But goes bonkers again immediately after i flash or wipe again Making it seem software related

But wouldn't it make sense if the moisture also left the phone? The only thing that made up my mind of it being hardware was flashing to stock and having the search button click continuously immediately. I have had the problem on and since october. Usually once a month for a couple of days. I let it sleep in a rice bowl when it acts up

Ok so my phone just started doing this one day while I was running Cognition 4.x Don't remember the exact version. I then switched over to Firefly on version 2.7 and kept updating all the way through 3.0. It was doing it on firefly too.
It got pretty bad a few weeks ago so I started messing around with BLN and the haptic feedback. After cranking the haptic feedback up it seemed to quit doing it as much. For example before I started messing with stuff every time I turned the screen on the home button would go nuts till I pressed it several times. After I messed with the haptic feedback it would only do it about 1 out of every 5 times I'd turn the screen on.
Well tonight I flashed from firefly to 2.3, I'm running GR-9 and TalonDEV 0.1.3 and it hasn't done it at all tonight. It'll probably start after I post this, but so far so good on Gingerbread.
I don't know if any of that will help anybody else, but thought I'd throw my experience with it out there. If it starts acting up I'll post about it.
ok so i have a Cappy running MIUI 1.12.16 version 2.3.7 and my power button started not working randomly, now i cant get into my phone :/ help! I do belive this is a hardware issue. It started in thr last MIUI version then i thought upgrading would have solved it but no

Try going into your camera and taking a picture. Don't ask me why, but for some reason this works. And it worked for me.
I'm in the same boat. Any suggestions?

I also had this issue I don't have a solution but if you do manage to get the screen up by some means I would suggest remapping the power button to one of the volume keys at least temporarily if you're rooted. You can either do it manually with root explorer or this app- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464 This has worked fine for me on every rom up until ICS.

haha that's exactly what I said when I first read it. but I wasn't joking - it actually works haha. glad it helped!
Same thing happened to me after I moved to Miui 1.12.23. Ive done lots of searching and everyone just says its a broken button. I find it awfully coincidental. I have since moved to cm7 nightly 181 (i think). And the problem carried over. Not sure a fix. CM has a feature to have the vol buttons wake the screen which has been great. I am still able to use the power button in recovery so I dont know what the deal is or the fix....
the camera thing worked but only temp.
my back and genius buttons onmy mytouch are smashed in i cant really do toomuch with the phone because the back button almost always funtioning back. do i have any choices?
My back button got stuck but I just hit it really hard against my hand like 50 times and it became unstuck lol u could try that

Check out ButtonRemapper. I've never used it, so I don't know if it includes the functionality to allow you to disable hardware button functions altogether, but if so, this might be what you're looking for.
Then, you could resort to something such as ButtonSavior to add software buttons.
edit: I tried out ButtonRemapper, and unfortunately, it doesn't allow disabling buttons completely, or if it does, I'm not seeing how. Sorry, I tried. =( Good luck finding a solution that will work for you.
Try adapting this method to our phone. You will want to make a backup first. Also, it's likely that you'll need to pull the file from the ROM's zip, edit it on a computer, and push it with adb.
Having a stuck Back button must be pretty disabling...

Out of nowhere my power button magically no longer works. Kind of a huge deal since I use my phone for work a TON. At first I thought it was the ROM but then I rebooted into recovery and discovered it doesn't work in there either...... but by some sort of miracle though my phone magically boots itself up when I swap batteries in it....
I am rooted and running Beans 20.
Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

You can get an app called button savior from Google play that allows you to create on screen keys to turn off your screen.
Various xposed modules allow you to remap your physical keys. If you don't know about the xposed framework I highly suggest looking into it.
Furthermore I believe some custom roms have key mapping built in.

Yes I already got an app that will shut my screen off and lock it but what happens when my phone stops magically booting up all by itself??
Then I'm screwed.

My power button just started malfunctioning too. I'm on Odin barebones 4.1.2 stock and the problem persists.
It sounds like a lot of people are getting this problem. If you use that knowledge to your advantage, I've heard people convince Samsung it's a manufacturing problem and got it repaired outside of Warranty. The power button itself is sautered onto the motherboard, so unless you really trust a mobile repair company, best option is work directly with Samsung.
That being said, I'm going to look for an Xposed Framework module that can remap the power button.
I looked for one, didn't really find what I was looking for... selling mine on ebay now to pay for my new phone...

Wow. My power button just stopped working also.
My phone is stock.
I did replace the glass myself a couple months ago and it's been working fine until about a week ago. Was wondering if that had anything to do with it.
Interesting to see I'm not the only one having issues.
Kind of timely now that the S5 is coming out this week.

This is happening to a lot of people. I'm sure the s4 will start having this problem followed by the s5 after a year and some months. Im done with samsung phones until they start using different parts. Actually thinking about the next nexus phone and hack a msata drive into it with a custom vacume formed case. The only reason I haven't owned one is because of the storage limitation. I think a 200+ gigabyte msata strapped to the back would fix that problem.

Hey guys, mine originally starting messing up on Saturday, and then Sat night and all day Sun is was fine, and now it is doing it again. I even installed a new rom and it is still doing it so now I am convinced it is purely physical and not rom-related. What are you guys going to do?
I have the Wireless Phone Protection for my phone and am thinking about using that to my advantage to get a new device....question is I've never done it before. If I say I have a physical problem with my phone then won't Verizon want it returned? That will make me have to unroot it and bring it back to out of box state which is a big headache. What if I just say I lost it or it got stolen? Am I better off going that route?
EDIT: Also forgot to mention that along with these power button issues my S3 also will not reboot on its own. If I select Reboot (be it from the power button menu, notification pulldown, etc) it will just shut off and not reboot.....but if I yank the battery and put it back in it will then reboot to recovery. Same deal if I do a normal reboot, haven to yank and replace battery. You guys having these issues too?
So a couple of days ago my power button started acting wonkie as well. I would push it and it basically acted sticky. I would push once but it would register twice or as a long press. Either turning the screen on and off or bring up the reboot menu. So I did the xposed button remapping. Worked pretty well, but if I restarted the phone it would do a weird haptic feedback thing every couple of seconds before finally booting up.
So I wasn't satisfied with just living with it being a hardware issue. So I downloaded latest cleanrom to flash from cm11. I rebooted recovery and now it just vibrates every couple of seconds. Would not make it to twrp. It will get to cm Samsung boot screen but then just goes back to vibrating black screen. I took out battery and popped out power button but same results.
Any suggestions? Think power button can be fixed by repair shop or is it time to go back to my trusty droid incredible until I can upgrade.

It can be fixed. There is also a way of temporarily making the power button work but I don't feel like explaining it again. If you do some searching there are at least 20 threads that have the temp fix in it.

Hi, I sold a very old phone earlier and the person sent me this video saying the phone is broken and you have to double press things.
Am I right in thinking this is a setting and can be easily fixed? It looks to be software rather than hardware. Their son is very upset so I'd like to fix it asap! If possible, otherwise a refund obviously.
It's a Samsung Galaxy S3 running Cyanogenmod. Thanks
Edit: Fixed by holding down both the volume buttons for 3 seconds!
Easiest way would be to a factory reset since it's going to a new user. Make sure you delete the Google and Samsung accounts first then do the reset in settings not the boot menu if possible.
Thanks, it has already been reset though and it was like this from the start? It's very strange, not sure how to disable it. (also doesn't help that I don't have access to the phone!)

You already did a factory reset and it persisted.
So you did a hard reboot and that temporarily at least did the trick?
Thanks, like I said it's tricky because I don't have access to the phone, but either way they are happy with it now But yup - it was from a full reset and it was there, unless they turned it on by accident.

May be an Accessibility feature. Sort of sounds like it. Lol for Vets that can't break the double tap habit.
