I'm Looking for a company that makes cases or some other way to add a physical keyboard to a phone. I'm currently using n1 but will be switching to sgs2 when it's out in the states. Is there a company that makes something like this? Case that adds bluetooth sliding keyboard or something along those lines? I don't plan to use it all the time, but occasionally it would be really helpful. I heard of something like this for iphone. Thanks for recommendations!
you can download four files and "adb push" them onto the phone or just flash a ROM such as CM. then make sure you're buying a HDI bluetooth keyboard. then probably you need to enter some command into the terminal. so you'd better install a Gscript or other app to avoid entering commands manually.
I have a mini bluetooth keyboard that works fine. With my phone but I'm looking for something that would be able to hold them together. Like a traditional slider does.

If that one is Bluetooth it must work as well with Android. No?

Well it would work but I dunno if it would fit... I've been looking for something similar too. I suppose that this one could be "adjusted" to fit if i was happy to stick it on with something but i think to do that i would wanna buy a spare back cover for my N1 and it would look really ugly tbh not to mention that it would cover the camera. But I see where your going and it could be a very good solution for occasional use!

I'm looking for an app that will add typing sounds of some kind while using the hardware keyboard on my G1. I'm coming from a modded, OpenTouch flashed and overclocked HTC Herald/T-Mobile Wing which had the option to add sounds for hardware button presses. I'm a big guy with BIG hands- my two thumbs placed together stretch from the "A" to the "L" on the G1 keyboard. The G1's keys are smaller and don't have the healthy, positive feeling "click" that my old Wing/Herald did, which makes it hard for my big ass thumbs to register if I've depressed the button. I end up backspacing a lot to correct double typed or missed letters. Having sounds would help sooooo much. Even the same sound you can set for screen touches would be perfect.
Does something like this exist? Could an app be made?
~edit~
Just realized I should have posted this in the apps forum....sorry! Move if needed!
hmm good post. I would like to know this as well, would be a great feature addition.
maybe someone can create a sound not when it opens but when ever the screen is rotated?just a thought

no offense, but that wouldn't really help the OP
and it would be a nice feature. god knows how you'd do it though
This would be an absolute must have app for me....I'd pay for it without a second thought.
ttt....
My hope is that some super secret squirrel developer will see this and whip out the appropriate app and beam to my phone in 3.2 seconds. lol

its quite possible to do it. i dont know how though
in the coding, there is a keyboardhidden and keyboardexposed recognization...
we just need to find a dev interested in it
i would like this also!
i love using the on screen keyboard because of all the sounds and the different ones for space and delete and if i could have it on my hard keyboard also i would most definitely pay
You guys know about Haykuros keyboard mod? The one that gives the hard keyboard predictive text? It also gives you key pressing sounds like the VK does.
can you link us to this?
if you use haykuro's HTC IME you can tell it to make typing noises when you click the hardware or software keyboard.

Hope that this helps.
Custom ROMs for the ChaCha? That'd be cool!
yeah! can't wait to get this chacha!
Oh yeah, i can't wait to buy this phone. I hope some devs will care about the ChaCha.
I, too, cant wait to get it. My only concern with it is the hardware keyboard and its durability. Before i got myself a Wildfire i used Blackberries. Since i message a lot and use email quite extensively on the phone, the hardware keyboard tends to deteriorate after a year or so. Will see after i get it myself. In any case my trusty wildfire is still alive and kicking now as it was the day i bought it. It should be interesting to see how this combination of touchscreen and hardware keyboard performs.

No need to be rude
you keep a phone for a year
I can't get past a month LOL
I'd be very interested in helping with this. I'd like to bring the battery calibration bits to this phone/battery too
I will probably start developing for ChaCha in 2 weeks, if I manage to get the money I need. So I'm with you guys
The QWERTY / hardware keyboard is the flimsiest I've tried yet. I've had Palm Treo, Centro, Pre, motorola Charm - and tried Blackberries. these are ALL superior.
The keys are OK but it's easy to press a key without meaning too - and the right arrow is kind of less clicky than all the other keys (I confirmed this bug on three ChaChas in HTC's concept store hands-on in Copenhagen.
Sometimes it instantly deletes the whole text because Fn (called Alt outside europe) before Del means erase ALL - this happens when you don't know that Fn is on and want to delete a letter - PUFF! the whole dang text is gone (and unlike iPad - no undo ).
It's easily dropped vertically - the dry metal is edge/grip-less or slippery. almost like the Pre but feels "dry".
The screen is good, the touchscreen reacts consitently (unlike Charm and Wildfire/Buzz where touch don't work on the table and on some chargers - works ONLY when they're held) and the angled shaped is nice. The software speed/response is fine, the cam and video quality is good. speaker is sharp though. Volume buttons are impossible to use without looking - can't feel them.
can't find a better android qwerty though WITH arrow keys (though selections made using shift+arrow can ONLY be deleted - not copy pasted...wtf?).
there's a qwerty bar android list here: http://gadgetwit.com
(I too have the symbol-stays-on-screen bug mentioned in the general/First impressions thread but it disappears when I go to another app and back)

Fn will delete the line of text back to column 1, but you are right that the absence of an Undo is extremely annoying! And I agree with the majority of your points.
tried universal root, z4root and gingerbreak - no luck perhaps root via USB then - Guess superOneClick is next up.

Blackberry's are badly built. Theyre unrelyable and to complicated. I spend most of my life appologising to people because theres has broken for the 4th time in 6 months
For anyone with a Senation already.
If anyone could be bothered...
Just wondering if a Headphone Controller app will work with the Sensation..??
I really want to get the iPhone version of the Sennheiser Headphones (PMX 680i Sports) which has the 4 ring controller along with Vol/Next Trk/etc and was wondering if this app works on the Sensation to allow that type of control.
(I think the HTC supplied phones have controls, but want better sound)
Really would like to know before diving in to the device. It would be great know if anyone has the knowledge or wants to try it out....
Cheers to all.
unfortuantly i do not have a wired headset with any button controls to test foe you. But i do use a couple of bluetooth headsets and the AVRCP is fully supported.
Not exactly what your after but may be of some interest to you
I have old Koss wired phones w/ controler i used with ipod and it doesnt work ... as for sennheiser, the bundled hs which came with my previous phone the HTC HD mini was from sennheiser so maybe even that one comming with sensation is

As of this moment, I can only confirm that the Play/Pause button on headphones designed for iPhone works normally on the Sensation without having to use Christoph Kober's Headset Button Controller app (which is really, really awesome in case anyone is wondering).
This is in contrast to, for example, the Nexus S I had before which would not properly recognize any button inputs at all. I had to use the controller app to get music working on that phone.
I'll reinstall the Headset Button Controller app and test it out with my girlfriend's iPhone earbuds tonight, and I'll get back to you once I confirm whether or not it reads the Volume Up and/or Volume Down buttons. I have the sneaking feeling that it won't, but hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised :]
Thx sosquidtaste
I really appreciate your effort.
There are a ton of really good headphones out there sold as iPhone capable with controllers that woud be great to be able to use them (working) on the Sensation. I can understand why they are marketed to the iphone folks, but it seems they miss a big chunk of the market by not working with other devices..
(I like the Sennheisers because they go around the back of your neck as one unit - not a big fan of bud style)
So, here's hoping!
Cheers

Sorry mate-- I just checked in the app's debug mode and confirmed that the Sensation still doesn't recognize anything but the center button on earbuds designed for iPhones. It was worth a shot!

Bugger...!
Appreciate the effort. I wonder why this is such an 'out there' thing? To me at least, it would seem logical for the OS to support something so, well, basic as headphone control. Wonder why there has been no 'universal format' for this type of thing.
....sigh.

Glad to help-- I was pretty curious about this too, given just how well the center button behaved even without the headset controller app. I just wish it turned up more encouraging results.
Competing platforms are great for the most part, except when small but important features get shot up in the crossfire ;(

Just curious, can this be changed when this bugger gets Rooted or S-Off or whatever the heck is done with the locks come off this thing..?

As I understand it, the control issue is related to specific hardware configurations in the headphone port of our phones so not even the most righteous of hacks will enable them to read input that they aren't wired to receive ;(
I'm no engineer though, so I'd be happy to be contradicted by someone in the know

So why I wonder, does the HTC specific Headphones work?
Do they use a different set of rules/hardware/ whatever...?
Curious.

I have some friends that work for the government and their in the same boat as you. They aren't even allowed to use wireless when their traveling and it's available.
Thanks for this, sounds good. Only thing left to work out is line in then i guess, if someone could test this for me it would be really helpful. Its the last piece of the puzzle i think.
One other question, i take it the only "pairing" the tablet does with the keyboard is just being plugged in? The reason i ask is that if i buy a couple of tablets and keyboards (me and the mrs) can we just swap the keyboards round without any pairing faff?

As far as I know, you can interchange the docks. There's a driver for it installed in Android from the start. There's no personalized settings or anything stored in the dock itself. Plug and Play.

If you are located outside the US in Europe this would be your answer.
If you're a US user then your stuck with the complex USB adapter scenario it seems.
perfect, that actually looks just what im after, simple easy and with cat5 in built. shame it doesnt have line in then it really would be ideal!
edit: just need to find someone that will actually supply it to me now!

Like the keyboards that are made for the iPhone? My suggestion is to make it Bluetooth.. Try to open one of the computer keyboards and see if you can make it smaller and similar
Yes, But I would like to know how to implement it like physically,
I was thinking for it to almost be similar to this. http://www.cellphoneshop.net/5keyboard.html?cagpspn=pla&gclid=CKyOzoWTobcCFQ_ZQgod0gIApg

I have no experience in this. You should try to manipulate of how the keyboard is made and then resize it to make it for certain phones like the blaze.
That sounds too complicated. I'm just going to use my imagination

Sent from my Liquid-AllStar Blaze
really, what you should do is get the case that xWolf posted the link to, disassemble the part that hooks to the iPhony, and draw up a case that actually fits the blaze like a glove in some 3D cad program that will also re-assemble back to the bluetooth keyboard. Then you could find a direct-injection molder who can take your CAD (or whatever 3D program you use) and just make the case. OR you could get a 3D printer to do the job for you for more up-front cost, but cheaper per-unit cost
Dude.. That is way beyond my imagination. I was just going to use a case and a metal scrap mold it and make another case for the keyboard and attach it.
