Is there any way to use a carriers 3g network that doesn't have a contract agreement with at&t instead of only being able to use edge data in a non at&t coverage area?

Not in the states.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it can't work on other networks because of the broadcast frequencies.

I've been with TMO US for a long time now and want to change. I'm on a month to month plan and paid for my sensation out of pocket and don't want to have to buy another phone out of pocket again.
So, I do I have any options? Or is is the sensation TMO US only?
Thanks for your help!
If you unlock the sim you can go to AT&T, but you won't get 4G I don't think. Read up on the HTC website about the phone and the frequencies it uses, then Google the frequencies that AT&T uses. That will be your best source of info as I am at work and can't look it up and give you links.
Hope this helped.

The only other carrier that uses AWS in the US from my knowledge is Cincinnati Bell.
Yeah...only plausible option is probably,ATT, but you'll only get Edge speeds...I'd stick with TMO.
You can use simple mobile, they buy from tmobile.

I noticed on mine there is an option somewhere to change networks to att. It said it wasn't registered. Then I clicked back on tmo and it was fine. Don't know if it helps. You never know.
Edit
It is under wireless and networks then mobile networks then network operators.

Can this phone get 4g speed using a HSPA+ network???
It can go up to 14,4mbps. It's exactly the same as the european sensation, except the name.
I've used speed test and got 4 mbs down and 2 mbs up but I don't think I was in a good signal place

Yes it can
So, I can use this phone on att's 4g network.
That's good to know.

No, you won't have hspa+ speed on AT&T. It doesn't have the right band for it. Only compatible in europe and tmobile US.

If you want to use it on at&t and get 3g/h, you need a bell sensation from Canada.
My inspire is for AT&T which I have unlocked for t - mobile but I only get edge internet...
I saw there was a number to(call)/ dial to change settings but when I set it to 3g my signal would just stop and say no service. I also heard wasn't possible to have 3 but I doubt that, is it true?

That depends on the area where you are....in the case you are using a different carrier from ATT you wont get 3g...just edge.
So "lay012" gets 3g because he has AT&T?
There's no way then?

For 3G
Tmobile uses 1700/2100 MHz
HTC Inspire uses 850/1900 MHz
So to answer you, there is NO way. Have to get a phone that matches the network.
The stuff they teach you in school 'skimming and scanning' or whatever your teachers called it shouldn't be used in life after school. I didn't see the unlocked for T-Mobile part .-.
I'm on AT&T.

No the bands are hardware dependent. This has been talked about it hundreds of times. A search would have shown this.

This is for my friend's phone. I have a RAZR Maxx and I use the phone info app to toggle to using 3G only. Can I use this app for the HTC Sensation also? What's the network setting I should change it to? My friend is on Wi-Fi mostly and when it's turned off the phone goes to 4G. How do we get it on 3G only?

the "4G" is acutally HSPA+ which is a faster 3G so it is technically on 3G even though it says 4G
So those are the only options huh? That sucks cause my friend's data cap on T-Mobile is 200MB then the throttling begins. I thought 2Gigs sucked, but 200MB is way worst! Lol

You can lock on different signals by going to *#*#4636#*#*. I think this is what voir looking for. Once the menu pops up to to phone information, you change your signal through there by pressing on current signal, another menu will pop. Up then and you can lock on a different signal through there . Hope this helps!

No need to use the complicated dialer. You can choose 3G only, 2G only or switch between the two from the network settings. Provided you're using sense of course.
I just got the news T-Mobile is suppose to go to real unlimited data (NO Throttling) starting Sept. 5?

Yeah 200mb is terrible! I guess the only way to save data would be to disable internet altogether and only enable it when he really needs it

I've got an AT&T straight talk sim in my i9020t and can only get an edge connection, from what I can tell it looks like I need a Tmobile sim. I read about an SII that you could flash a radio that would make it work though, anyone know anything about this? I'd rather try flashing some before I order a new sim.
I've heard that too about the GSII, but I'm afraid the situation is different for the nexus s. Your I9020T's 3g radio will only work on tmobiles frequencies; the hardware's reception capabilities cannot be changed by flashing something.
Now, I'm not familiar with the sim you currently have in, BUT, if that network uses the same frequencies as T-Mobile, all you need to do is adjust your APN's.
I'd look up the frequencies for you, but I'm off to class..
Let my know how it goes/what you find!

Thanks I'll see what I can find.

I'm pretty sure that he's right about being stuck on the edge with at&t. 3g frequency only on tmobile. You would need a pentaband phone like the gnex to get both carriers 3g or hpsa+

Yep, at&t 3g frequencies are not the same as T-Mobile frequencies. You definitely need a T-Mobile sim for your i9020T
