Does hacking fix EVERY problem with this device? - T-Mobile LG G2x

I have three days to change my G2x for the Nexus S.
I need to know whether putting ANY custom ROM/root/whatever can fix every single problem with this phone:
Battery life drain
Software bugs
MOST IMPORTANTLY (why doesn't anyone care/notice?!): NOISY HEADPHONE JACK OUTPUT
Is this problem entirely software, or partly hardware? I have such minimal LCD bleed that its not noticeable.
Please chime in and check my thread on noisy output and take my FIVE SECOND test with your modded device to tell all of us whether it is fixed or not.

nevermind.

Using CM7 + Faux's EXT4 undervolt Kernel + GPS fix pretty much makes this phone perfect for me. I have absolutely no issues at all EXCEPT for screen bleed. That cant really be fixed with software though. Battery life is great. Yesterday I didn't use my phone much but I went OVER 24 hours on one charge. Didn't plug it in once. Woke up this morning and it still had about 15%. Of course I turned off data while I slept though so that probably helped a lot.

voodoo takes care of the headphone jack noise. in fact i've never ever experienced music with low of a noise floor below

Can you please elaborate and confirm that you noticed the exact same noise as I described (for a second after any sound stops, or during a completely silent track playing?) And voodoo took care of it? So it is software causing the noise and not hardware?

I'm finally at peace with my G2X and it is solid reliable. ****ty battery life but what can you expect.
In my case my phone did have reboots and freeze while charging. I still don't trust having this phone charging overnight because it might crash.
Also went and deleted both Internal/External SD and properly WIPE like 5 times. Flashed CM7 RC1 + Google apps and fixed permissions. I had issues where email syncs failed after 8+ hours but after doing this full clean flush and Wipe, this piece of **** phone finally is reliable.
Its solid and finally enjoying the phone. Just need CM7 out of RC and I'm golden.
However, every time I went to stock I had issues. If you don't plan on Rooting/Flash don't bother with this phone. Its a piece of crap and LG sucks at making ROMS.

I love my phone but I reccimend you get the nexus S. I'm sorry, its just a better phone.
Ps....Please don't ostracise me from this forum lol.

Software-wise, yes. It's a better phone... Hardware-wise, HELL NO!

CM7 with Trinity kernel gets 24 hours of battery and no reboots from my experience.

youd be a fool to trade for that phone... yes every problem fixed.. no problems for awhile for me... love my phone..

I have to agree. The G2x is a million time better then the Nexus S. The Nexus doesn't even do 4G.

The Nexus S is last generation, the only competition for the g2x is the htc sensation and the samsung galaxy s2.

Long live the King!

G2x - July baseband/radio, Cm7 Nightlies, Faux OC/uv Kernel, Launcher Pro, Straight Beast Status! No Bugs! Smooth as my ps3 or 360 on gaming... gameloft is making some killer gamez... I love this phone... It's a sense or no sense issue if you ask me... I like both.. My last phone was the htc glacier i gave to my momma, it was a good phone... I wanted a senseless device and im glad i got this one.. not another 6-8 months down the road when the next 1.3+ Ghz batch of phones comes out i might go back to sense, but im completely content where im at right now with the g2x with the games and now netflix... dont get no better.. maybe the sgs2 but that's the most powerful phone in the world as far as buyin out the store... but the sensation.... NO!

I've never had a noise issue with the Jack and I use my g2x like an iPod. Battery life sucks but with Google music its been awesome. I've also been using the leaked gb off LG the only thing with that is now I can't seem to root my phone.

I don't notice noise. I plug my G2x into my surround and crank it. Sounds like any other device I've owned (ipad2 being one of them)

NVfllash cwm and then install or restore rom = root...

So after getting CM7 and Faux's OC/UV/etc/Voodoo kernel I still have noise with the sound. Do I need the Voodoo app to enable a different kind of processing or something? I cleared 3x caches/data, installed .zips: CM7 b89, gapps, and Faux [2.6.32.41] (v0.3.4) before restarting.
This makes the sound even more apparent: Go to a silent place and turn the volume on the phone all the way down to vibrate. Put the speaker at the bottom right into your ear and push volume up once. You'll hear the quiet boop tone and a second of very loud hiss before it cuts out. Wait until the sound disappears after two seconds to notice that it was even there in the first place, before pushing the volume button again. It even turns the amp on when you set it to vibrate and there is no tone played. Two new units fresh out of the box have had this same noise. I can't believe users, especially devs don't notice this or see it as irregular, so I must be doing something wrong with Voodoo, and every unit in Canada is the same hardware-faulty. I've got three hours to swap it for the nexus; a primary use for this phone would be monitoring detailed music, and this is an unacceptable level of noise. Please try this and let me know if it's every unit or just every one in Canada, and if the 3 dollar Voodoo app is necessary to fix it!

I had never noticed the issue before, but when performing your test I hear it. This isn't a precisely calibrated, professional audio-phile level piece of equipment. For most people, this would not be an issue. If it is for you, then this is likely not the device for you.

[Q] issues with sound quality

ok so I finally got "Coredroid" working on my phone now after a few days - what seems to be at 100% and I am impressed and I like it a lot. Only issue I seem to be having at this point is with sound/volume on phone. I remember on the first page of this thread it said there is a 20& speaker increase and if this is 20% increase what was it on mute before... lol the sound is very low. I came from a rooted Aria and there is a huge difference - I usually run Pandora as Im in the shower using plugged speaker and the sound is horrible. so long story short is anyone else having the same issues and is there any fixes available? otherwise I'm happy but considering I am a music man.... please help a brotha out!

I also noticed this, it's really quiet even plugged into speakers but to be honest even plugged in the audio quality is garbage.

[Q] Extremely Low Call Volume - Is this a common problem?

Hi all.
Recently got myself my first smartphone, the Nexus S on Telus. (Well, had a Samsung Omnia before, but getting a WM6.1 phone in 2010 can hardly be considered smart )
Everything was going swimmingly. I have a penchant for changing up the software innards on the devices I own, so naturally I rooted my shiny new phone and had a good time trying out all these ROMS. This was approximately a month ago.
About a week ago my phone inexplicably began to act up. My in-call volume dropped to barely a whisper, and my touch-sensitive search button would for some reason go off on it's on.
After a bit of Googling, I found out that the search button issue is affecting many other Canadian users also, something about a bug in the new radio (AUCKD1).
But I've yet to find anything conclusive about the in-call volume. There are threads who are complaining of either low or high volumes, but no workable solutions.
So as a last resort I have restored my phone to fully stock 2.3.4. One to see if it was my messing around that caused it, and to also prepare for the possibility of having to return my shiny. It may just be my imagination/denial, but the call volume seems slightly better. Not good enough for me to hear outside, but inside, with no background noise it's just slightly quieter than normal.
Another thing that is very odd. Skype volume is much louder than voice calls. To be frank it's still not loud enough to be considered acceptable, but it is definitely louder. They use the same speakers right? Why would that be?
If at all possible I'd like to avoid having to take the phone back since Telus will no doubt charge me exuberant fees for having touched the phone for more than 3 seconds and moving more than 18 millimeters away from the store I bought it from.
Please advise, XDA!
U can try install kernel voodoo sound from supercurio and apps. U can see the different.
I had try most of the custom rom. There is one rom who give me loudest call volume, but I can't remember which ROM it is. U should explore more rather than bring it to the store.
Now I'm on liquidnexusbread, but not giving me a good volume in call.
I knew it sucks... but I love this rom performance.

Persistant Volume Issue in Gingerbread

Quoting from another thread, apparently I'm not the only one with this issue so I'd like to dedicate this thread to finding a possible fix (PS, if someone can suggest a better title let me know).
open1your1eyes0 said:
Hmm maybe it's just me but I think I discovered the oddest bug ever. For some reason, the first sound I hear after like 30 seconds of idle is quieter than what I'm set to in the volume settings and then if I keep using the device without idle all the sounds are loud like normal after that first sound.
For example, I have the device locked with screen off for a while, I unlock the device and the unlock sound is really quiet, then I immediately lock it and unlock it again and now the sound is loud like normal. I keep doing that and it sounds fine each time after that, but as soon as I lock it and leave it idle for like 30 seconds or more and unlock it again, the unlock sound is quiet again.
Also this doesn't only affect the unlock sound, it affects everything, notifications, alarm, ringer, etc....and all my volume is set to maximum I even checked with a 3rd party app. The same thing happened on the previous 2.07 and 2.10 leaks, it's almost like Gingerbread introduced this weird "automatically lower master volume after idle mode". I can't seem to find any option that would affect it.

So basically the first sound you hear after a short or long idle time will always be quieter than your actual setting and then keep using the device and everything sounds normal. I almost overslept and missed calls several times cause my alarm and ringtones are so quiet now.
Anyone have any ideas what could be done or taken a look at here?
EDIT: FYI, someone else claimed they had it since MR1 update but I had no issues on Froyo whatsoever. This only became introduced to me with the first 2.07 leak.
I've noticed this as well. I didn't find it to be a big deal, but thought I'd share.

all i know is even with volume+ the volume sucks on this phone. my wife's lg vortex is 5x louder. we need a dev to look into this.
I honestly thought I was alone on this one. I miss texts and calls all the time because the volume is so quiet after idle.
It is easy to see this with gingeritis all you have to do is turn the volume up to max for your ringer, and then turn the screen off and let it sit for a minute or two. Then turn the screen back on and push the volume up key, you will notice the first sound it makes is really soft, and if you push it again, it makes the normal loud sound.
I hope someone sheds light on this...I for one would like to stop missing calls
I am about to try the official RUU and see if it still does it, but it's only done it since I started using gingerbread roms.

aosp roms are louder but not loud enough. we for sure need a volume boost. i cannot imagine it would be that hard to do.
I was just getting ready to start a thread about a possible volume booster.. I can't remember if it was the tb or fascinate i had it on but, adrynalyne had a program called drm i think in his roms that enhanced the volume.. the problem I'm having is the media volume.. I'm trying to listen to MLB at bat here at work but can barely hear the broadcast.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Hmm volume booster does seem to be a good workaround idea but I think the main issue is the fact that the volume level automatically changes regardless of the volume loudness. If only someone might be able to figure out what this can be caused by.....
Also I noticed something interesting today. On some sounds it actually seems like it starts off quiet and then makes it louder while the sound is playing. It's hard to tell cause it's so fast but it's definitely noticeable in some cases.
On cm7 there is an option to play notifications and ringtone through the speaker (even though I thought they did anyway) but I haven't noticed the problem with that selected.
Sent from my HTC CyanogenBolt powered by CyanogenMod 7 RC1.6.1
someone should look into the lg vortex volume and try to port the mod over. my wifes phone is 10x louder than my tbolt. hers is aosp too.
FYI, I have only tested this on the official leaks. No custom ROMs or AOSP yet. Though I'm quite tempted to find out if this occurs on other ROMs as well (especially AOSP).

It takes a split second for the audio amplifier to fire up. The kernel is probably not accounting for this. The audio amplifier suspends after usage just like the screen does to prevent battery drain.

Hmm that's an interesting theory but just FYI, the screen times out later than the volume begins to idle to quiet (if it matters). You think flashing another kernel might fix the issue?

Sorry. I didn't mean they time out at the same time. Just meant that it also suspends to save battery. I have a feeling this won't be solved until the gingerbread sense kernel source is released. A really good kernel dev might be able to look into this with their current source. You might also notice a pop or crackle sound due to this same issue. Again it is coming from the amplifier powering up WHILE the audio is playing instead of BEFORE. There could be an underlying latency in the hardware but I doubt that's true since it wasn't really noticeable on Froyo. Android has always had a problem with audio latency although it has been pretty much "worked around".

Hmm I see. FYI, I also noticed this issue is extremely obvious when opening the phone dialer for the first time and just press like the number 1. You can hear for a split second as if it "boots up" the audio amplifier the dialing sound for the button grows from silent to normal volume. Then as you dial the rest it sounds fine. But cancel out of the phone dialer and back into literally after like as short as 5 seconds press a number on the dialpad again, you hear it making dialing sound quiet to louder and then normal for the rest of the dialing.
Such a bizarre issue, I really don't understand why this problem just occurred in Gingerbread builds if it's been absolutely fine on older Froyo builds. You would think something as obvious as this would be one of the first bugs they try to resolve. And it seems like it wouldn't be that hard also (assuming it's just a setting in the kernel coding or something).
FYI, if it helps anyone willing to look into it I found out the audio amplifier for the Thunderbolt is a TI TPA2051.
I am really hoping some of our higher up guys can take a look at this. I am really curious to know what (if anything) can fix this issue.
i do know the overall volume on sense roms are much quieter than aosp. what a waste of a good speaker. we for sure need a fix here.
It might not be as easy as it sounds. Audio can be handled quite differently from OEM to OEM. I'm not sure if the thunderbolt is using the native Android audio or if HTC is using their own implementation. You also have to throw the audio Codec into the mix. Here is a link that although it doesn't explain our specific problem, you can see the complexity and the inherent issues with Android audio http://groups.google.com/group/android-ndk/browse_thread/thread/1744088af0924ed9/7170773c13aabe2f i'm not sure about now but the general consensus with audio developers used to be that google needed to stop trying to implement fancy bells and whistles in the audio and get a good solid foundation to start with. Gingerbread was supposed to address some of these issues but I don't believe it did.
Anyway, i'm not positive but you may notice the problem more in gingerbread because there were quite a few changes in the native audio implementation.

Gingerbread Kernel Source for Thunderbolt just released: Link
I know this thread is old, but something i've noticed in regards to this. Im running a semi-stock ROM (xda-bolt), with a stock kernel. I noticed the volume changes don't happen on this ROM, however with a modified kernel such as IMOs 6, the problem arises. Any other non-stock kernel i've used has this problem, but stock kernels do not.

HTC One S - voice quality

For those who already have a One S, do you also have a contact noise in the background when you're talking to someone on the phone?
It gets louder if you turn up the volume and it is pretty annoying. Am I the only one having this problem?
What could be the reasons for this?

In comparison to my hd2 it has a better battery life. I would say about 6-8 h online time. The only disturbing thing I found so far is the noise when calling someone.
The processor is devilishly good, everything is smooth and fast. Also it fits perfect in the hand, not too big and not too small either.

6-8 hours immense browsing with the phone. After that I have to recharge the battery, but not sure yet.
After 15 hours (about 30 mins using internet, most of this time in standby) I still got 75% of battery life.
I have 53% battery life after 24h not charging.
I used it for some surfing, sync, whatsapp, facebook and some other apps most time in wlan. 8h was completely standby, the rest was a mix of using and standby.
My first impression is, that the battery has an acceptable life.
That seems to be decent, though I do wonder how it'll be once it's all settled in, but back on topic. Do you still get that sound while using the headset or a bluetooth? Related to this, but is it just you or does the other person hear it, it might be the mic (or does the One S have a dual mic setup?) backfeeding or something like that.

I have this problem too. It also feels like there are sometimes kind of interruptions in the conversation.
Haven't had a call yet...if the issue is there I hope it is a software bug. That can be fixed easily. I also hope they will get rid of that ugly on screen menu button and bring the htc sense blur live wallpaper back!
And the flip clock should always flip and not occasionally.
I received my replacement one s due to call quality issues and the new one is even worse. everyone says i sound like im in a tin can as my voice is SUPER muffled. they can hear when i start and stop talking but the words just arent sharp enough to hear anything. wtf is going on with this phone?
This can be operator issue.
Yup I've had that too. I get it about every time that I call a new number. Completely muffled and can't hear other side. But that might just be me sincevI'm convinced that my phone is completely defective.
I've noticed that my phone lags in basic tasks that even my mytouch 4G handled smoothly. It'll even freeze halfway through a song quite often. Not sure what's going on but I've had major performance problems with my One S even after a full reboot.
My battery dies in about 10 hours of mostly being on standby. I go to school so I listen to music for about a total time of an hour and half throughout the day.
I turn my Internet off, wifi off and Google location services off and still the same result.
Battery settings says it's mostly using the screen even though it's off for about 85% of my use... Anyone else?

I migrated over from a mt4g as well. The call quality on that thing was perfect. You might want to try and do an exchange on your one s because mine doesnt hang on basic tasks and ive been really surprised by the battery life in comparison to my mt4g. With some moderate morning use (some games, surfing, app downloads) and then forgetting to charge it afterwards my phone lasts on stand by from 9pm to 1pm the next day with some charge still left over. it sorta lags a tiny bit but nothing to complain about. the only game ive really played on it is temple run and it seems to glitch in the beginning a few times by freezing and continuing the game but it sort of fixes itself? My screen, like yours, is apparently always the culprit for battery time even though i have it set to auto brightness and have it so it turns off in 30 seconds.
the call quality is what i can't handle. this phone is great but if i can't make a phone call whats the point!? i'll be getting my 3rd replacement on monday =/
3rd? Wow. I had about 17 exchanges on the mytouch 4G (no joke) and was hoping that I wouldn't have to go through any on this phone. Was there anything special that you did with the phone? (ie charge before 1st use?). I'll probably just tell Tmo about the call quality and lag for them to exchange it. I hate that they won't take battery probs seriously and ask you to do a factory reset.

!! You sound like me. I lost count on how many returns I did on my mytouch4g. In fact... that's how I got my one s.
I b*tched and had so many returns they offered me whatever android I wanted (after threatening to cancel and not pay them sh*t and getting into an argument with their "customer loyalty" department when she tried to "upgrade" me by sending me a sidekick -_-) for free... so I waited until the release date of the one s and ordered it =3
Even though nothing too special must be done with these phones batteries I still let it get an entire charge before I started to play with it. The phone is perfect in every way and I honestly had no complaints until everyone I spoke to told me I sounded like I was muffled =/
My first phone - Everyone could hear me fine, i couldn't really hear them...everything was high pitched and muddy and buzzy sounding for me and it actually hurt my ears to talk to anyone
My second phone - The complete reverse. I can hear everyone fine but no one can hear me.
My third phone - I'll let you know... I'm stuck at work but I'll find out tonight.
(i still haven't sent any of my phones back in case todays phone is even worse.)
They don't take anything seriously -_- every time i call them I'm prepped for the argument because they never know wtf they're talking about. I always had to tell them "HEY...This is my 20th mytouch...CHECK MY ACCOUNT...(by then they just sit silently when they see i'm not lying)... i'm PRETTY SURE i know how to trouble shoot and reset my phone, no there isn't any water damage, so stop wasting my time and send me another phone so we can both get back to whatever the hell it was we were doing >_<" all of my rage.
EDIT:
Received my phone and the call quality isn't 100% but its SUCH an improvement from my other two devices. I'm keeping this one. It'll do. I can hear everyone (not as great as on my mytouch4g) fairly well without any muffled sounds and they can actually understand everything I'm saying. Finally! Definitely try and return your OneS.... i know it's a pain in the ass but it's worth it in the end =/

Haha yup I was offered a sidekick too! I will never know how in the world they find a sidekick a "comparable model" to the mytouch4g and not a Galaxy S 4g at least.
I called about an hour ago, they said my replacement will arrive on Wednesday. They charged me a $5 fee though. I'll definitely charge that one for at least 8 hours and hopefully get more than 4 hours of heavy use out of it.

My first one i had to foot the $5 too, but the other two it was more of a "you guys f*cked this up" type situation so they didn't bill me anymore for returns. Good luck =)

Well I got my replacement Wednesday. Charged it for 13 hours and still have insanely weak battery life. Apart from that, my phone rebooted once while on my pocket and being unused. Then it was lagging during browser use and rebooted again. I'm pretty ticked off considering my mytouch experience with T-Mobile and HTC. At this point I might just return the phone, reverse my upgrade and cancel in November when my contract is up and I could get a good black Friday deal on whatever new iPhone Apple offers by then.

I have a normal quality whit stock rom. then i upgraded to maximushd and in call sound quality issues begin.
here is all i did, and no improvement until last step.
1. tried different radios. 1.13 and 1.15 and reflashing 1.20, no improvement
2. installed ElementalX 6.1 kernel and nothing
3. tried In-Call Quality Fix for Sense 5 here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2482089
4. finally i tried flashing phone.apk from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46945481&postcount=1844
after 2 days, it seems the problem is solved.

Quick Question

So im running CM7 i believe and it is rooted everything is good on my phone just a couple of quick questions about things that seem to be annoying me.
1. Does anyone else's phone seem to heat up pretty quickly with extended use? For example if i've got the screen on and I'm texting for like an hour straight it gets pretty warm to a hot sensation right on the metal part that holds the SIM card in and the SD card. The phone also heats up when its charging too, i'm assuming that is normal.
2. I have ADW Launcher and the Cyanogen Mod or whatever it's called. The issue is that when I'm playing music and get a text my audio will completely pause (but the song keeps going) and then keep going which tends to get annoying when I'm enjoying a part of the song and I miss it entirely because of a notification. I've tried to set it up so that it ducks the audio 4db but it doesn't seem to work for me. Does anyone know how to fix this?
3. Sometimes when I receive texts i can hear it through my speakers of my computer coming but my phone will never fully "receive" it so it sits in limbo forever. Does this happen to anyone else?
4. Battery problems, it seems to die a little quicker than i'd like. I've got it on the lowest brightness, no internet, no bluetooth, no gps, wifi usually on but when i'm not near a wifi hotspot i turn it off. Is there a solution to this?
Thanks for any help in advance

Overheating is pretty much the norm on the G2X. Perhaps there are other ways to deal with this, but one way for sure is to go to settings-->applictions-->development and click stay awake. This reduces the overheating while charging. If you get a lot of overheating it might be the battery.

Known g2x problem. I took the extreme solution and ordered an oversized battery from amazon(http://www.amazon.com/EZOPower-Exte...d=1344178238&sr=8-2&keywords=battery+g2x+3500) but you might want to just bring your charger with you....

1. What kernel are you using?
2. Settings > Cyanogenmod Settings > Sound > Notification Focus?
3. Never heard of this...
4. Download this and check wakelocks and see what is running...

Also, once a phone is unlocked it is unlocked for good right? Even if i put different ROMs and such? Cause i bought this phone 2 months ago unlocked with it rooted and flashed with this stuff. I'm asking because I'm scared that if i try putting a different ROM on it that won't be unlocked anymore. I don't know the unlock code or anything lol
Edit: And i know the G2X camera is bad so I'm wondering if there is a way to make it permantly increase the exposure to +1 or +2 instead of me having to change that every time i open the camera app or is that not possible?
also im thinking of ditching the g2x all together for the samsung galaxy s2 do you guys think it is worth it? I don't know if the S2 has any problems as bad as this phone. It's going to cost me 100 dollars to upgrade to it in the end. Thoughts?? or maybe the samsung galaxy nexus

If your phone was unlocked (not the same as rooted) it will stay that way. ROM away as you wish.
Unlocked = can use on any SIM based carrier
Rooted = means you can do whatever you want to your phone software-wise.
I myself have the heat problem but it was partially fixed when I decided to mess the overclocking and undervolting made available by custom kernels. To fully fix this problem with my phone overclocked to 1.4ghz and undervolted I took some aluminium foil layered a few pieces together and cut it to the size of the back. I added a bit of extra aluminium to where the sim is because it seems like that is where most of the heat comes from and now my phone becomes warm but not warm to the touch now that it can disparate heat faster.
Very nice idea but wouldn't the aluminium retain the heat to the battery causing it to overheat

I don't know but I have not had any problems with it so far and its been almost 3-4 months with this small mod.
I rooted a friend sgs2 for him. its through sprint. so far it doesn't seem very great semi laggy and I would not want 1. Sprint internet seems very slow as well. My g2x puts his sgs2 to shame. I did leave him on stock rom though so maybe it would be better if I souped it up
