I saw that a few others have asked this question but none of those threads have gotten much in replies and advice. Currently running MIUI 1.7.15 and would like to go back to stock (out of box). Any advice or guides out there?
They're not answered because its in a stickied thread

Q: How do I root/unroot the Nexus S?
Check the development section links below for more detail, but you gain root on the Nexus S by booting the phone into fastboot mode and typing "fastboot oem unlock." This will wipe your phone and it's SD card partition. To unroot it, again boot into fastboot mode and type "fastboot oem lock."
Follow the root guide stickied at the top of this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545
In the event you want to return to stock, simply flash the NAND backup found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884093 . This will restore everything, including the stock recovery image. Then as mentioned above go into the bootloader/fastboot mode and enter "fastboot oem lock" in ADB.

I've noticed that you can download stock images through rom manager. Curious how those work?

I am at my wits end.
I have tried for the better part of a day to root my i9020A (Android 2.3.4, KD1, GRj22).
Has anyone successfully gained root?
If so, could you point me in the right direction.
PS. I will appreciate help from someone who has actually done this (I9020A).
Thanks.
Is your bootloader unlocked, if so then you have to flash clockwork recovery, by using fastboot mode through sdk android software, through your computure. You can get the recovery file and root file in general forum. In the general forum, there is a guide there as well and you can also go to youtube as well.
It's fairly simple - this applies to all of the versions of the Nexus S:
Boot into bootloader - fastboot oem unlock (this wipes)
Flash custom recovers
Mount /system
flash SU binary through recovery
On reboot the recovery will be overwritten with stock. To prevent this rename / delete /etc/install-recovery.sh

My bootloader is locked.
I cannot get my device to recognize the USB drivers.
I tried both Android SDK & Samsung USB Mobile drivers
I had to use the junefabrics driver. Shabby has a one click that does most of it and provides the adb driver

Phew! Finally
I was able to unlock my bootloader (used pdanet).
If at first you don't succeed, try and try again.

Can you explain please...
Hi all,
I get yesterday my new Nexus S 9023
I had a Motorola Milestone and now I'm studying all the modding section of NexusS
I unlock the bootloader and push root on the Stock situation.
Before flashing Roms and Kernels I wanto know how to came back to stock situation (in case of problems etc...)
With the Milestone it was a nice program under Windows named RSDLite that flashed .sfb stock roms.
Thank's for your help
Wrong section, also to make it stock just re-lock using fastboot oem lock
I'm sorry Dario, I think this was the right section because of in the same equivalent forum for the Milestone ther's an important thread for how to back in stock.
I know how to relock the bootloader but I mean, for example, if I flash CyanoGen and I wanto came to the stock rom, how to do this?

NO FALSE SECTION!
No Development in this thread so not related to Dev Section!
to return to stock flash a stock image via CWR or Fastboot!
for Fastboot use "flash all" !

EDIT: someone moved it?
flash your Nexus S with any stock ROM (without rooted), search in development section . and lock your bootloader with fastboot.
OK thank you for suggestion.
I hear about Odin that seems to be similar to RSDLite from Motorola
Are there any return to stock instructions floating around out there? I'm unlocked, with cwm recovery, and rooted but am thinking if returning the phone and obviously would need to restore the original recovery, do a factory reset, and re lock. I did this recently on my evo shift and it was a two step process (re rooting took all day). Hopefully this is similarly simple?
Thanks in advance.

You can flash the stock recovery and factory reset but to my knowledge motorola has not released a way to relock the phone

Does "fastboot oem lock" not work? That's what the instructions say from Motorola in the unlock bootloader page.
Also, where can I find the stock recovery?
Are these what I'm looking for (from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001226)?

You need the TWRP recovery installed. If you've never used it before, you'll need to make a backup in order to generate the correct folders necessary. The directory will be either on your memory card (/external1) or internal memory (/sdcard). The folder path will be TWRP/BACKUPS/**your**phone's**serial**number**/
Inside that folder, create a folder and name it "stock backup" or whatever you want to name it. Then put the *.win and the *.md5 files in there. Put the stock recover in whatever folder you have your adb installed.
Reboot to recovery.
Restore the boot and system partitions from this backup (will show as "stock backup" or whatever you named it)
Once the restore is complete, back out to the main menu ... go to reboot -> choose bootloader
Flash your stock recovery ( fastboot flash recovery **whatever you named your recovery file**.img )
I typically flash this twice one right after the other just in case
Reboot your system ( fastboot reboot )
From there you should be all set.

Or, can I just flash the stock recovery.img you provided, try to re-lock the bootloader, and perform a factory reset to be sufficient to return?

To return to Original Software, you will need to reflash a Motorola signed software image to your device, or send it in to our service center to get reflashed. MOTOROLA reserves the right to charge for any assistance required by users during this process. At this time, we are not posting a recovery image for the Photon Q 4G LTE.

stock images
Right, I understand that, but I'm still running Motorola Original Software (the stock ROM) because I never flashed either of the two in progress CM ports. I've got it back to a stock, still odexed, rooted with Motofail2go state with CWM recovery. So my plan is this:
Flash stock boot image (instead of the custom one which I used to replace the unlocked bootloader warning)
Flash stock recovery (which Moto claims they will not supply, but you just did), using:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Then, perform a factory reset from recovery (that's an option in there, right?)
Then, relock the bootloader with:
Code:
fastboot oem lock
And other than the flag somewhere in Motorola's database somewhere, it should be "like new", correct?
Final question, I see two different stock recovery images.
In shabbypenguin's post from August which you just linked to, a 10mb image.
And in drakeheart's post from last week a 5.8mb image.
Anyone know which one is the right one to use with my updated 77.8.10 software?
I'm not sure if there's a stock updated recovery hosted somewhere. You might wanna revert back to the oem system and re-update from there to be safe.
I ended up flashing the earlier, 10mb recovery and it worked fine. Able to factory reset from it no problem. Couldn't relock though, the fastboot oem lock function requires you to flash OEM software along in the process.

I successfully return to stock using the method in this post

the file link is broken , but you can find a dropbox link in following reply
The RSD flash method is currently the best for return to stock, previous post do not include system.img, I will make a full zip file for stock flash under RSD Lite.

But even still, Moto has logged the device as unlocked assuming you followed the official unlock path...
Most stores probably won't check the phone thoroughly on returns. If you resell it to someone 3rd party, please tell them that you've unlocked it previously, as you have voided the manufacturers warranty.
Hey guys,
I just got this phone a day ago and wanted to try out the Cataclysm ROM today.
I was following the following guide on how to root the Nexus 5:
androidrootz.com/2013/11/how-to-root-nexus-5-windowsmaclinuxubun.html
I got up to step 9:
9. Connect your Nexus 5 to your computer and transfer "UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip". This file is located in "RootNexus5" folder you downloaded earlier.
But it didn't allow me to transfer the file to the phone.
I assume it is unrooted, cause it says unlocked and it has an unlocked photo when I boot up my device. But I don't think it was fully rooted?? (I'm assuming because I wasn't able to complete the final steps).
So I decided that I'm just going to unroot it and stick with the stock ROM.
Any thoughts on how I can unroot it? Would it be okay to use Wugfresh's unrooter? Even though I didn't use it to root the phone?
wugfresh.com/nrt/
Please let me know. Thanks!! :good:
since your bootloader is already unlocked, just fastboot flash a custom recovery and then use adb to push the rom you want to your phone.
there are several threads on how to do this.

Thanks for the quick reply; I'm looking to revert back to stock and unrooting my phone.
I tried using wpug's tool, but it says ADB device not found... I'm using windows XP for what it's worth. I'm stuck...

Thanks Zep.
I'm not even sure if I rooted the phone or not, but I got up to step 9 of the following guide (did not complete step 9)
androidrootz.com/2013/11/how-to-root-nexus-5-windowsmaclinuxubun.html
Is my phone fully rooted?
I'm attaching two photos of how my phone looks when:
1. I hit both volume and the power buttons:
SECURE BOOT - enabled
LOCK STATE - unlocked
2. When I boot up (picture of unlocked lock)
If only my bootloader is unlocked, how do I lock it back? I want to have it back the way it came from Google incase I need to return for warranty purposes.
Thanks a lot! :good:
1) your phone is not rooted if you did not flash supersu.zip which you said you didnt.
2) to lock your bootloader use: fastboot oem lock.
^ there is a return to stock thread on how to do this.
Those pics won't show if you're rooted. By your description I doubt you are. You never flashed supersu.
To lock the bootloader do
fastboot oem lock.

Thanks gentlemen. Will read up on fastboot oem lock, try it out, and advise on results. :good: Fingers crossed...
If you are getting device not found when you try to use ADB, that means that you either don't have the right drivers installed, or that you are not using a 'good' USB port. Try a different port.

It's not the following thread right:

Not sure if there's a specific guide for locking the bootloader, most of them is for unrooting (which I don't need, correct?).

Yes that one... we assume you fastboot flashed recovery so you need to return that too.
If you don't know what you've done, follow the whole guide and fully return to stock.
Otherwise, cherry pick what you need from the guide

Hi,
I flashed CM 11 onto my One Mini M4 back in November, but am kind of fed up with the crashes etc and want to go back to FULL stock, so I can perhaps sell on the phone and get something a little faster
How can I do this? I don't understand which one of the threads is the FULL stock HTC ROM, and some say "flash this firmware first" which I don't quite understand either. Also I wouldn't mind being able to "relock" the bootloader and put the original recovery back on
Thanks
Well the main instructions used when users return to stock is to install the stock recovery. So find a stock recovery for your device, then head over to the device manufactures site and look for an official firmware. Then simply download and move to your device and install the stock firmware from your stock recovery.
But to stay on the safe side, could you post the thread link that you read?
Thanks worked for me

I assume you have fastboot on your PC if your bootloder is unlocked so to relock all you need to do is go to your fastboot folder, open command prompt or terminal and type:
Code:
fastboot oem lock
This will relock bootloader in a few seconds. If it says in cmd or terminal that it has failed it should be fine and if you retype it it will say boot loader already locked.
