*******SOLVED*******
I don't even know how, but I was changing the LCD density on my phone and I didn't like it, so I went to fix it back to 240, and the entire thing was blank when I entered text editor (Using Root Explorer btw). I just exited it to make sure it was the right file, and then it's gone. GONE.
I'm a little scared. Could someone please post a build.prop for the Samsung Infuse 4G?
Oh, and if it matters, I'm on Infused 1.5.3
BTW: I did back up the file before touching the original, but the backup is gone, too.
FIXED: Downloaded the Custom ROM, extracted, emailed myself the file, copied back to directory. Yup.

I just applied Daoist's CWM stock ROM update (should still be rooted, right?). It came up first time.
Then, I modded my build prop (set dpi to 120 because I like it that way). But maybe I screwed up the file name in Root explorer, because now I'm in a boot loop and if I try ADB PULL /system/build.prop it says "file not found."
I can't get SU through adb, so can't push build.prop to /system. ADB remount returns an error. permission denied. Transformer won't boot, so I can't do anything from it.
I CAN get to cwm, and have been trying to create an update.zip that will just copy build.prop to /system, but everything I have tried quits with "install aborted" message.
What can I do?
restore a nand and dont try and **** with it again, lol. no but really, restore a nand and then copy your build. prop and make a flashable zip and place on your sd card in case it happens again, so you can just flash it in cwm.
Resolved..
Well, why go back when you can go forward?
I went ahead and installed the Prime ROM. Looks like it is eating all my currently installed apps.
Y'all should know, though, that if your system can't find a build.prop it won't start. You can ADB to it and have a rudimentary set of commands, but your ability to significantly alter anything in your file system will be prohibited.
Lesson learned.

as a side note most editors in android rename system files when you change them to "nameoffileyouedited".bak so if you pull and rename that file that might have fixed your problem. also try lcd dencity changer from the market. its a little less hazordous

That is true. I had backups. But without a build.prop, the virtual machine won't start. There is no way to do a file operation to replace the backup. At least none that I found. I had to flash the whole system.

EDIT:
Reported as not working. =(
Hello,
scrolling through the forum and found this. Quickly read through it and it should work for most phones. Ill give it a try in a bit on my skyrocket with ICS.
Must have a Deodexed Rom installed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583232
trying it now
Make sure you do a back up before. It hasnt been tested w/ the skyrocket yet. I am doing a nandroid then applying it.
doesnt work, it opens, but crashes almost immediately, a freeze, then in 30 seconds force closes...it looks sooo nice though!!
How did you get it to install. I tried to copy it into the system/app folder and it wants to replace it, i hit yes, and it doesnt replace it... Getting frustrated.
rename the old Mms.apk to "Mms.apk.bak" and then paste the new "Mms.apk" onto /system/app/ and it will install, then reboot...
Trying to rename it and it keeps saying i dont have the rights. I used Root Explorer and when i hit the Ro/Rw button it wont change it to RW. Then i used ES File Explorer and i clicked the option to enable RW on /system but it still wont let me rename it. Using the ICS NexusMod BETA 3.
your system isnt writeable, flash a different rom, or different kernel..
Trying this on MHX 5.0 will report back shortly. Nope.
issue seems to me is that there are related files not just the apk, like for the VVM i pulled for someone else, they needed the jar and xml files i gave them too. we need someone with a nexus to go a search for mms in root explorer and give us everything.
Has anyone on Nexusmod tried this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574675
Uses CM9 framework... For some reason i cant get the stupid file to work. Keeps reverting back to the stock when i paste it. I fixed my permissions issue.
did you remember to change it to RW from RO in the top of root explorer?

Nope, FC's
Re-flashed my tf700 back to stock this morning. Rooted using Debugfs. Installed LCD Density app, asked it to change my DPI to 160. It crapped out, said it couldn't. Decided to do it manually by using ES File Explorer. When I go to Root/System .. there are folders and no files.
WTF!!!
If someone else had a build.prop from the latest Official ICS, could I drop it in there?
Am I looking in the wrong place?

Are you sure you are rooted?
All the symptoms you've mention indicate that you are not rooted.
If you think you are rooted, you need to enable Root options in ES File Explorer and this should bring up a Super User Allow / Deny option.
SGT 2 7.0 , rooted it last night with the tutorial here, cm10
Root checker says its good and I can install root apps
I'm dieing to install a custom boot animation and the moving the zip file into system/media folder just isn't working. I believe the other suggestion was to move the zip file, it Root Explorer, into the data/local folder thats not working either
Someone help a poor noob? Hey, I'm not that bad, I got this far on my own
As far as I know, the kernel maker has to support this feature, and it's not in the stock ROM. You have to go CM or similar for this feature.

I'm pretty sre I'm on Cm10
Sorry, didn't see that. Use ES file explorer for the copying, it has good error messages. Make sure to enable mounting system in ES settings. You may need to download "mount system rw" from Play Store. You could also download Rom Toolbox Pro, which will do it for you, but it costs something like $5.

Okay this could be a couple of things...
First if your new animation is already named bootanimation.zip it won't let you overwrite the existing one. Delete the existing CM10 bootanimation.zip file in the system/media directory. Now you should be able to move the new animation file to the target directory.
If that doesn't work make sure ES File Explorer has the rights to make these changes.
Go to ES File explorer settings.
3rd from the bottom it says root settings.
Click on that and check all 4 things in the next menu.
Super User should prompt you allow access for ES File Explorer. Grant it.
Reboot.
Now you should be able to move the file you want to the media folder in the system partition.
After you put in the new file you may have to update the file permissions as well. I forget what they are supposed to be but I usually just check everything as read/write for all permissions options on bootanimations.
If none of that works...I dunno...come back with more specific errors you are encountering. Specific error messages, etc.
sheesh
I've done every instruction, followed them to the letter and the default boot ani won't even go away although i can find no hint of any boot ani files anywhere. it appears to function as it should, deletes the files, moves the new ones, file permissions are ok... there's just no change whatsoever, it's kind of baffling. my tablet may be possessed by he devil.
Waitwaitwait. You're saying there is NO bootanimation.zip in /system/media and it still has the stock bootanimation? Try doing a system-wide search for bootanimation.zip using CM file manager. If it does come up, note its location. If there is no bootanimation.zip in the correct folder, Android will play one hardcoded into the kernel, an image of flashing "android" text. So if there is no animation in the right place and you still see the stock CM one, you are putting it in the wrong place.

wowzers!
OK, so I realized that I didn't have cm file browser and did a search and finally did the nightly update. What a trip that was. It got stuck on the boot ani and wouldn't shut off or anything so I had to wait for the damn thing to run its battery dead. It starts and definatly has a different ani now. The whole new layout is messing me up bad, took me several hours just to get back online.
I have even more questions now.
BTW I'm on android version 4.1.4 now I believe.
For instance, apparently I still have all my apps installed because if I go to the store it says so and won't let me download them but I can't find them anywhere.
And some how I disabled that bar on the bottom that allows me to go back or switch windows and if I go into a program I can't get out of it because I can't switch windows.
HELP! AAAAAIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE!
ok
I got the window switcher bar back, it was extended desktop option. Still can't see these apps I supposedly have instslled.
Oops. Sorry about that.

If you have a titanium or cwm backup, wipe data and restore it.

Try using ROM Toolbox Lite, it's a free app. It worked for me.
In Lineage OS 13 it's possible...
Like mentioned above - in LOS 13 from AndroidAndi it's possible to change/overwrite the existing bootanimation.zip contained in system/media. Done here with a nice Aurora Borealis bootanimation
I was messing around with the build.prop on my Boost LG Realm. As far as I know there is no way to make a backup to this phone, so I did the next best thing and made a copy of the build.prop and saved the original. Somehow though when I copied and pasted it back into sys file using ES explorer, something went terribly wrong. the phone gets a black screen of death right after the boot screen. I am able to get into the stock recovery, but no further. I'm thinking that a copy of the stock firmware is my only help but I can't find a copy of it anywhere. I do have a second Realm that is my son's that still works (probably because I haven't touched it yet) if that helps at all.
