Ok guys, it was a good run... a week run. I don't mind this tablet, I tried TNT 2.2 and ZPAD. I liked them both, TNT a little more.
-This tablet has AMAZING potential, and awesome hardware such as the processor. Software out of the BOX is again like everyone says: HORRIBLE.
Overall build quality is pretty good, not considering the little creeks you get holding the center of the back.
-The official thing that ticked me off to return this tablet was.....wait for it............ LCD Display and viewing angles. Im sorry but it seems like its from the Early 2000's not a display we would see in many electronics Now a days.
-Another deciding factor for me is the touch sensitivity, didn't do it for me. Not as sensitive as I would like.
-Non-illuminated keys, hard to use at night, keys get pressed easily at night.
So after thinking if i should wait for iPAD2, since the rumors are racing; or get Galaxy Tab,
Ive decided to get the Galaxy Tab - I got a brand NEW Galaxy Tab(Sprint) on Ebay for $500 - White backing, Sealed BRAND NEW In BOX. No contract.
I'll be turning the Data OFF and using it as WiFi only, It wont be linked to Sprint, I will NOT activate the 3g.
I got to check the device out, and its extremely portable, its nice. 7 Inch isnt THAT bad at all.
Any comments?
Sorry to see you go. Enjoy your new tablet!
I see these goodbye posts all the time in all the forums I've been a part of. And "sorry" is almost in each post?At the end you just need to be happy with your product. Personally I am not replacing this tablet for anything that's out right now because of the dual core tegra 2 processor. My next tablet is going to be another T2 but definitely a better screen and hopefully a gig of RAM. I don't care if its a 10 or 7 inch tablet because both are practically the same in reference to portability since I can't fit them in my pocket.
Honestly, the only goodbye post that I am looking out for is Roebeets, Rothnic, Bekit, or any other devs. But I figured i'd chime in because I don't think anyone should be sorry for moving on to a different device....unless you were getting a cruz tablet then it would be flame city for you. Jk
I'm sure you'll enjoy ur galaxy tab because its a nice device.
Not gonna disagree with any of your complaints, and if it is not right for you, then get the one you want.
Personally I don't mind the screen, since it is only for me, and I just hold it at the right angle. The non-illuminated buttons are a bit of a silly oversight (and I would much prefer real buttons to those capacitive ones) but I don't mind so much since it has on-screen soft-buttons.
I like it because it is well powered (battery and processor), inexpensive, and has a large display.
Most importantly is that it is easily modifiable. If it wasn't it would have gone right back. It nearly did anyway because I was falsely told by Sears' website that it was a viewpad 10. Since roebeet, rothnic, omiji (? sorry can't remember), and all the others I cannot name have made this device software so good I see awesome potential beyond the great tablet it has already become.
So VS owes XDA and it's senior modders a lot since without them probably all of us would have returned the POS that VS put on the shelves.
In summation Thank You to the XDA team working on the G tab, and if anyone else is thinking about returning this product consider this before you do so, because Samsung, Apple, or any other manufacturer will not give the type of updates and support you can get here from an open device like this, from a place like XDA.
And to the OP, I hope you enjoy your Galaxy better, I have a Captivate and I like it. I am sure if you want a good experience out of the box like what I have in my Captivate, you will be very happy with it.

I could not of said it better myself.
The notionink adam goes on preorder later today also for $400-500. I'd suggest looking into that tablet also.

Shouldn't be too bad, and at the price that Samsung is hawking these for they should support it for a while and better than any other currently shipping Android tablet.
7": yeah, I'm missing that form factor ALOT myself, but I just can't bring myself to give up Tegra2 for something lesser even for a better(IMNHO) form factor(7") nor a better screen(awful gTab viewing angles).
I'm keeping my gTab(actually I'm stuck now anyways past my 14d Staples return) and evaluating 7" complementary(to gTab) tablets, of which(ATM) Nook Color is looking nice w/IPS screen and a8 CPU plus now rooted. Just need to get over to a B&N and try out a demo unit... (want to see how overall system and browser fare speedwise @800MHz on an a8...)
Might just wait out until next year and see if anyone coughs up a 7" Tegra2 or one of the other SoC companies cough up their dual core a9 SoCs and they get in a 7"...
Notion Ink: They sound nice, but since they're a new/small tablet only company I'm waiting to see if they survive to release their 2nd tablet, hopefully Tegra3 based...
OP should avoid the 101 then, since mega gimped device.
Probably best to wait until March. There should be 2.3 or higher Tegra 2 tablets all over the place by then.
Maybe a very stable out of box 2.3 Gtablet by then too..... Maybe at least.

$375 only!
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/09/notion-ink-adam-pre-order-to-begin-today-pricing-starts-at-375/
I have been refreshing the NI site for days ready to buy Adam but when I got up to bat I couldn't pull the trigger.
$375 is with a standard LCD - not PixelQI. PQ is $499 w/ Wifi or $550 w/ 3G
Shipping is $50 - the thing comes straight from factory in India.
However, a few things made me hesitate on the device I have waited a year on.
- you must also pay 'customs' but nothing states what this fee is
- shipping is $50 through DHL which is not insured
- ccavenue is processing orders and they do not take MC
- you are billed in full as soon as you place order while estimated ship date is 6-8
- given no further manufacturing delays and that shipping is quick 6-8 weeks is a long wait
- specs list "8+ GB Flash"...so is that 8GB or what?
- crazy amount of return conditions the least of which is getting RMA 7 no later than 7 days after shipment (probably take longer than that for DHL to get it to you) and a 20% restocking fee for 'open' items (that's $100 + return shipping)
- no mention of 'bad pixel' policy
So while I am in love with this thing and will be so jealous for those brave enough to order site unseen (not even a hands on or real photo on website) I am just not that brave.
Now the question is....do I open my gTablet and play with it until round 2 or do I look at something maybe a little bit pricier but with a better display?

For those that are wanting but not ordered an Adam - the Pixel QI versions are already sold out. All they have left now is the LCD version.
Since I couldn't pull the trigger on the Adam I guess the only thing standing between me unboxing my g tablet is questions of the viewing angles. Since my wife picked this up from the store I have not seen it in person. Is it really a deal breaker? What is Office Depot return policy on open products - I know during the holidays returns are extended until Jan 8 but not sure if that mean sealed in the box or not? I imagine I could just go and return it Dec 26 if it is that bad....stores are usually so crazy that day they ask few questions about returns.
Oh, and about Notion Ink. They updated their blog explaining some of the conditions (such as $50 shipping) and it is a little more comforting. I never doubted they were a good, honest company. I think my issue is that they are biting off more than they can chew.
Building a fantastic product in a lab is one thing - seeing a new product introduction through the entire manufacturing process is something completely different and that is where I am not sure of NI's experience. While the prospect of waiting sux, I think I am more comfortable doing so than jumping in on the first run.
It is not a question of NI taking care of me if there is an issues, it is a question of when. I am still jealous of all those who did place the order and will kick myself the day everyone starts posting their unboxing videos :-(

Office Depot will give you a return gift ticket for Jan 8th (they did for me). Since Flash and the acceleromter have issues out of box, Office Depot should allow return and no restock or forced store credit (they do this for opened electronics). The store manager wrote on my receipt "Full return allowed", since he was aware of the issues.

For personal viewing/usage I don't really find it to be that noticeable except when I rotate the tablet specifically to look at this and was simultaneously checking for backlight bleed(had bad bleed on GT & WPDN).
Sorry, but there's a problem with a company that immediately charges for an order when they KNOW it will not be shipping for a while. They're SUPPOSED to NOT charge UNTIL the item is shipped or about to be shipped. So this tells me that they're tight on money ATM...
I work at staples and found out today that the G Tablet is being recalled for unspecified reasons. I'm extremely mad as I was hoping to get one for christmas at 279.99. All I can hope for is that this recall makes more of them available on the market at the refurbished price. I'll be sure to update this if I find out if this effects more then just Staples, but I would assume that is the case.

Get it from Sears at the same price.... While they have it. It is the best value for your money on a tablet today... Not because of Viewsonic but because Roebeet's efforts to make it usable.

Yeah, the hw is great, but the stock fw is barely beta quality if not alpha quality. Lots of "force close"s with stock fw.
I actually ended up buying mine at Staples on 11/22, and was surprised to hear of the recall. I only went back on my last day to return it when I had decided to keep it to get a price match to Sears' $379 price... just kicking myself though for not waiting another week and buying at Sears then getting the price match there last weekend to $349... oh well, still best hw of any tablet available ATM with several custom fw options.
(Stock fw was totally awful excepting for the fact that it just wasn't ready to ship, and who knows I might even go back to it someday if they stabilize it and add in more features, e.g. mass storage support, better uSD card mounting scheme, better bluetooth support, stock flash support, etc. probably just dreaming but... kernel source would be even better, as that'd hopefully give the possibility to roll your own version of Android... which is what really got me interested in tablets in the first place, and the gTablet also happens to be the most hackable ATM with several recovery options...)
I tried all the FWs and also returned mine to Staples on the last possible, 14th day at the end of November. When they asked me for a reason I just said "it's a piece of defective crap".
Besides the sh1tty software, I hated the way the screen looked with all those smudges and fingerprints.
This whole endeavor helped me understand why Galaxy Tab is $200 more, and why it is worth it (imho).
I wish these low grade manufacturers did not embarrass Android with their craptablets.
yes it seems that my local staples pulled the G-Tablet as well. They said on the sign that it was due to a manufacturing defect. This is too bad, but I am glad that I bought mine online when I did.

Nothing very humble about your comments, so the imho is quite ironic.... Are you a politician?
That said, returned mine too, late November and got another for a five week return extension. Gtablet rocks now.
Galaxy is marred by a MUCH slower chipset, not as easy to mod, no USB host and a proprietary connection for data. Hardly seems worth $200 extra, IMHO

Could the argument be made that if the firmware was better you would have kept it?. We all should know by now no UI will be perfect because froyo isnt tablet ready..not even on the galaxy tab..I mean screen smudges is not a deal breaker for me where as I guess spending $600+ dollars (or $400 and signing away 2 years of my life) I think I would value a lot more to me. I don't want to wait for a Notion Ink (which will cost you as much when they get done adding them goodies), or Archos(in-stock?) right now. I would rather hack a G Tab, and keep my two hundred.

Also, there're articles recently saying that Samsung is thinking of doing something to prevent rooting...
It seems to me that any tablet is going to have a smudge-able screen, so that's a non-issue to me.
As for the Galaxy tab. I don't want to pay for a cellular service for the device. I keep hoping that Google will relent on the requirement for the cellular connection for Market access.

Moot, since I think the OP may have been a drive-by poster. A little pseudo-humbleness, diss the product and off they go to a Galaxy, which will make them even less happy. Ironic.
So I am trying to figure out if I should buy the g-tablet or wait a couple weeks and buy the Xoom. Here are the differences I have found so far.
Xoom Pros
Better Screen (1280x800 vs 1024x600)
More RAM (1GB vs 512MB)
Has GPS
Better camera
HDMI (without dock)
Twice as much storage (internal 32GB vs 16GB)
Honeycomb out of the box
G-tablet Pros
2 usb ports (1 full and 1 mini)
Cheaper $375ish new vs $600(rumored)
Good development community
So I am leaning towards the Xoom. Seems like the extra features are worth the $225?
Am I missing anything????
I think you missed the price of the Xoom. From everything I have heard the price is at least $800.

The $600ish price is for the Wifi model that doesn't have a confirmed release date. If you don't need a tablet now, yeah I would just wait a couple of months or so and get the wifi only Xoom or wait for the 3G version to drop in price.
Comparing the Xoom and Gtablet is comparing a Luxury car with a Economy car. Do you want the bells and whistles or do you just want something to get you where you want to go?
wait until the lg slate aka optimus pad comes out as well as sumsungs honeycomb tab then make your choice
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Let us not forget that Moto has been locking their bootloaders so your at their mercy for upgrades. If you can wait and don't want a GTab there will be many unlocked devices on the way. BTW, the GTab is completely open and almost unbrickable
Just a thought, if you wait, then the next best thing will be roumored to be coming and you will be waiting again. That being said, if price isn't an issue, and the possiblilty of a locked bootloader isn't an issue, then wait for the Xoom.
I anticipate much better viewing angles, better placement of the headphone jack, power and volume buttons (I hate the fact that the headphone jack is the bottom left but the hard buttons are at the top right so when I'm holding it with headphones i have to hold it top left and bottom right :s), likely better support, probably more development and community support since it will be the first Honeycomb tablet, and most importantly a lot more quality accessories.
I'll be selling my G-tab for a Xoom next month. I want to give Xoom a month or so burn in to see if the price drops and to get a chance to look at the potential alternatives (LG, Samsung, ASUS). That is assuming its bootloader isn't completely locked down and with Moto's recent change in stance towards the dev community I can't image that it would be.
---
One more: haptic feedback.
Being an owner of the GTablet and also faced with the same choices - its a tough one.
I see it this way and will depend on your priorities:
If your priorities >= (screen, vendor support, GPS, Android 3.0) and wait time >= NOW then
BUY (ZOOM)
ELSEIF priorities >= (independent support, Cost, Hack-ability) wait time <= NOW then
BUY(GTblet)
ELSE
BUY(IPAD)

This is just my opinion, but features aside, I'd wait to see what how locked down the moto will be, how easy or hard it is to brick, and how much community support it gets, and only then, decide.
Jim
If you want something now with an nvidia tegra 2 processor at a very good price and you are comfortable flashing roms then the gtablet is the way to go. The gtablet is very well supported by the xda dev community.
If you want a tablet that is ready to use out of the box, i.e. you don't like mucking with firmware, then wait a few weeks/months. There's going to be a flood of nice tablets but they will cost more and may be tied to wireless carriers.
I am very happy with my new gtablet.
Malata
Don't forget the new versions of the Gtablet.....
http://liliputing.com/tag/malata-smb-b1005
This could be a competitor for the Xoom also.
The Xoom even at the subsidized $600 with Verizon contract isn't a good buy, cost wise. The blogosphere is in an uproar over the cost of this thing compared to other offerings which has been horrible for the street cred/exitement building up before launch. Yeah, the Xoom is pretty and will be the first to offer Honeycomb but their marketing along with Verizon have done an absolutely terrible job of leaking false prices, charging too much for activating features (wifi), and requiring a 3G plan to be tied down to which makes it much more expensive than just buying it outright for $800.
With rumors of a $599 wifi only version of the Xoom coming you have to decide if the $200 difference is worth it to you.
No matter what rom base or how talented the developers are, the gtablet will never have the better screen, the extra 512 Meg ram or the extra hardware sensors the Xoom will feature....or real Google/market support.
Now....is that worth $200 more is completely your decision. I will possibly pick up a Xoom to replace my gtablet around my birthday (May) unless other more capable tabs are released within the same price range.
The gtablet will be something to play with, tweak, hack, etc....while (for me) the Xoom will be the tab to use and show off to my iPad loving friends.

So apparently the keyboard on the GTab is worth writing home about.
I think I'm still waiting for the next line-up of tablets before I pull the trigger on the GTab. I'm sure they'll at least lower the price considerably right before it's nixed.

I'm not sure I'd count on that. In fact, most of the tablets that ARE out there have seen their prices go UP since December. With the XOOM costing so much, and the prices that have been announced for some of the other tablets, the second tier folks are finding they can charge more and still be a bargain by comparison.
In fact giving how costs overseas are going up on transportation an raw materials in general, I am thinking seriously about getting two more G-Tabs as soon as I get my tax refund before they get another price hike as well.
Reality is these tabs will never replace a laptop these are consumption devices so why pay the price for one at the price of a good computer?
Xoom vs Gtab.
I understand all the questions.....got the Gtab and couldn't be happier. maybe the doom will be all that....but??? don't have to wait....honeycomb will come.

They won't raise the price of the gtablet. That's unheard of. Maybe if you're comparing to some sort of one time promotion. You don't release a product at one price and then 6 months later, raise it.
bought new last Christmas from Sears. I installed Vegan-tab immediately and liked it very much. but after the vacation i found it became less useful to me-- my daily life is either sitting at office or at home (or driving, of coz) and i have two desktops and two note books to use. It just sit there for nearly a month now. So I am considering selling it for some cash.
It'll come with original case and accessories, and a AmazonBasics bag I bought for it (AmazonBasics Netbook Bag with Handle, Fits 7- to 10-Inch Netbooks, iPad (Black) ). I'd sell it for $270 and you pay the shipping you choose. I'm in north DFW area and local pickup is also welcome. you can save the shipping cost.
I also sent out the rebate form for its dock and they cashed out my $10.5 check for "shipping and handling", but I do not know when they will ship it... If you buy my gtablet, I promise I will ship the dock to you for free (you still need to pay the shipping though) as soon as I receive it.
silly me. just noticed the subject and didn't notice the forum. had my hopes up for a good deal on a galaxy tablet/something w/ 3g data capabilities.
I see.. let me change the title to indicate it's a Viewsonic G tablet, not a Galaxy tab
Very interested...
Can you post up some pics and do you take Pay-Pal as form of payment?
i am interested, how much to sell to sydney, australia.
and could you post some piccies?

I'm seeing a few of these - is everyone jumping ship?
I'm keeping mine, no worries. If the GTAB forum eventually dissapears, the device will go to my wife. The old trickle down effect....

I think its more a case of everyone trying to get the most money for the Tab while its still hot. With all the new Tabs coming out soon they fear prices dropping and want max value. Thats my take anyway, I could be wrong.
Mine is going to my wife as well. I take it to work everyday and when I get home she runs to me to pry it out of my hands. I think she'd kill me if I ever sold it. And just to think, before I owned a Gtab she "didnt like touch screen devices". Go figure..........................
Yep, makes sense. It's actually why I sold my dev unit as I figured my original GTAB would eventually become the dev unit (which is exactly what happened).

Robeet,
Not everyone is jumping ship; I still have 2 of these and will keep them as long as possible. Based on the tablets I have seen that is scheduled to release I still think we have the best of the lot. It is not our fault that VS was damn short sighted in their approach to this tablet.
It annoys me greatly that they did not push the channel hard enough on this device and have the leadership needed to make this a true force in the Market. It further annoys me that they did not have accessories available nor did they have 3rd party accessory suppliers in the ready. This was poor market strategy at work; guess they missed that whole business 101 course while in college.
No... all of us are NOT jumping ship; this tablet honestly has the capabilities I was initially looking for in a Tablet. Once we have 3.0 on this thing personally I will be set no matter what other wiz-bang device comes out later!!!!
Just my 2 cents worth
I wouldn't say "I'm jumping ship". The hardware inside G-tablet is mostly in line with the mainstream of tablets this year, and now you know their prices... I think g-tablet still has very high performance/price ratio.
I'm selling it just because I found that a tablet is actually not so useful to me...when I got this tablet I was very excited, flashing custom Roms, trying all kinds of apps, etc. However after the vacation, I could not find much use of it... browsing web, watching video? I'd rather use my desktop with a 24" LCD and dedicated mouse/keyboard. Playing game? The casual games on tablet are not comparable with "real" games on my game PC and consoles IMHO. Reading novels? My kindle 3 is more comfortable with its E-ink display... I guess the real problem is I stay at home or office almost all the time. Tablet is more useful to an outdoor man.
Just my 2 cents
I'd still like to buy this.....
Have you sold it yet?
I'm still very interested. Let me know what you want to do to take care of the transaction...

I'm actually looking to buy 2 more for friends
My boss even introduced my GTab to our clients as " Superfast TnT-Lite OS" tablet!
It is understandable that there are many more tegra 2 tablets coming with better specs + screen. Most of them starting around $400.
Xoom wifi is only $539 at Sam Club (according to engagdet)
I guess that if we can find a screen replacement + honeycream soon, people would stick around for longer..
I just canceled my order that I placed on woot.com because all this talk about the viewing angles and no market or honeycomb and I really like to have my devices ready fresh out the box so im just gunna wait for the Samsung 10.1 coming in june with its gorgeous display and slim design .I was having that feeling of buyers remorse after I ordered the gtablet lol
Those were the debates I had in my head when I was deciding whether to purchase the woot deal or not. You know what it came down to for me. The cheapest gtab with 16gb internal will be $499. $499-274.99=$224. That's practically 2 Gtabs for the price of one Samsung Galaxy Tab. Plus I will NEVER trust Samsung again when it comes to software. They have screwed me enough times and still are the slowest Android manufacturer at updating software.

I no have any problem with the viewing angles. For me it is ok. And don't expect cheaper tablets unless the unknown brands... The Gtablet is one of the most versatile tablets, you can flash freely almost anything without brick it.
And of course always is gonna be a better deal around the corner, if you wait, but it can keep you waiting for life. I rather prefer live the present.
Just my 0.02 cents
Angles do not bother me at all. In fact, I was traveling this week and the guy next to me kept trying to see what I was doing and I was glad to know that he probably was having trouble.
I have not doubt somebody will figure out how to get Honeycomb on this thing, but right now, I am happy with it as it is with Vegan. My plan is to keep this for a year while HC gets its bugs worked out and the technology drops in price. Then I will buy a new one and give this to my kids who use it over 50% of the time anyways...

*Honks the Nobody Cares Horn* *HONK!*
I'm about to return my 2nd gtab.
I picked up my first Viewsonic gTab from Tiger Direct in Canada. The battery wouldn't charge right out of the box. I ordered another one and sent the first one back. The second randomly loses power while on battery. I have to tap it in the right spot to get it back up again.
I think the build quality is suspect on these units. I'm going to wait for Xoom/Asus Transformer/Samsung...I have to be patient...I don't want to get sucked in to the iDarkside available in stores now.
If every device worked "out of the box" sites like XDA would not be around. XDA is here to help improve the out of box experience. if you don't do that what's the point of coming here?

And that's the same reason I ordered 2. And, if I knew then what I know now, I would have purchased the OP's for a total of 3.
Special thanks to the everyone working on the gTablet. I hope to pay them back somehow.

if you think buying a samsung product will get you a great out of the box experience you are sadly mistaken. the samsung vibrant was pretty much useless and took forever to get the froyi update necessary to make it run at even reasonable speed. cannot compare apples and oranges - this is a 285 dollar tablet

Yea and I read in the thread somewhere that viewsonic didn't even make the device or something like that. Altough I know it is a great device for the price, I just don't want to settle for less when there's better tablets coming out in a couple of months

Used the screen to your advantage huh lol nice, and yea I get you by christmas the xoom will probably be around 400$ and also lg tablets toshiba tablets and the rest of the bunch
For the price, I'll take the drawbacks. I just need to do a bit of reading to figure out how to tweak it once it arrives. Hopefully some of my experience with the DX will come in handy.
Samsung makes decent hardware (though my sig might suggest otherwise) but their software sucks. Go look at how stressed out the CM guys are trying to get CM on the SGS.
At $280 the gTab is in the toy category. If I paid $400+ I would expect the thing to work flawlessly.
To each his own really, for me the excitement around the gTab is that it is nearly 100% unlocked so tinkering with the thing will be super easy.
Even some of the complaints people have with the device with the newest patches are kids play compared to some of the crap I had to deal with on my SGS in order to make it work the way I wanted.
That ran through my head for about 5 seconds. Then I remembered that I have a Vibrant.
The hardware's fantastic, but the software it shipped with was garbage, and samsung clearly doesn't give a crap about showing the modders any love with releasing source. Don't get me wrong, I love my phone, but it's the combo of Samsung hardware and Team Whiskey software that makes it good.
Personally, I'm avoiding giving Samsung any more money (Android-wise) unless they start acting more like HTC (who mostly does well, I think) or something.

+1 bazillion.
Really if you have a personal preference like this, why even come on to a GTab forum and post something that you know will possibly start a flame war.
If you did not want to buy it because of what you hear great... for you!
Why do I care?

Man.....I know what you mean. I own an epic 4g (great phone) and they just now, finally released the Froyo update for it. Thank god for these forums.
Even with Buyers remorse why would you not sell the tablet for more on ebay or craiglist to make some extra cash???
