How can I tell charging voltage? - T-Mobile LG G2x

I have the Mugen dock, and it has connectors for both USB and AC chargers...I have both connected. How do I know whether my phone is being charged by the USB or the AC? My initial thought is that since it says "USB connected", it must be the USB...but I know the AC charger is still functioning because it's still charging the spare battery.
Is there an app that would tell me how much power is being supplied? Whether it's <500, or closer to 1000 (mv?)

Can the phone tell the different between a charger and a computer?

I just find it stupid that the phone would show a notification for USB connection when I connect it to a charger.
Yes, it can tell the difference. Check in OS monitor, it knows whether you are getting power from USB, or from AC.
My phone thinks my car is a computer. As far as I know, it goes by the current being received -- 500 mA from a computer, 700 mA from the stock wall charger.

I don't think it depends on the current.
With my factory charger, if I insert the charger in and kinda pull out one side of it, it will think it's a computer and I can "mount" my sd card. so it might be a certain way the connectors touch inside

It depends on the charger, but yes, the phone for the most part can tell the difference. It has to do with the voltage that is put out.

It has nothing to do with amperage (unless it is under 500) and everything to so with charging source. Wall chargers basically short the data wires to indicate AC charger and car chargers do not.
There is a thread in accessories forum discussing this and mods to get full charging out of car chargers. I did it by modding an extra cable. My car charger puts out 1 amp but the phone never draws more then ~ 750 mah.

Every time I read one of your posts, in my head is McGyver's voice. Hearing him narrate the xda forums is hilarious.
From a phone
The phone can take up to 1000mA of charging current. But only if it detects it is on one of its supported AC chargers. Draw more than 500mA on a PC USB port may damage it. So, there is special wiring needs to be done for the data PINs on the USB port. That's why for generic car charger and wall chargers, it can't only assume it is PC USB port and charges at a slower pace (500mA). You will need the Samsung AC or Car charger to charge at higher current. I managed to mod one of car charger to be recognized as AC charger (no USB prompt). And you really need it because if you're using the phone as GPS navigation device, 500mA won't be able to sustain it (battery will keep be drained). You need 700ma or more.
It also depends if you have your USB connection set to a default if you will get that pop up when you connect it to any other than an AC charger.

Yes it does and is sensitive. I have been using a BT headphone charger and I would be perplexed that my phone showed 100% but pull the plug and its at 87% every morning AFTER recalibrating the battery.. LOL
Decided to use the Samsung Charger and no such issues. Needs those extra Milliamps.....

Why won't my TF charge via USB hub?

[Q] I have a USB charging station that has worked for every device I've thrown at it. I know the TF trickle charges on USB, but this hub is plugged directly into an outlet, and it's not charging at all. Why?
Because the TF needs a USB 3.0 lead to charge it while it is being used / screen is awake
USB 2.0 only charges when the device is powered down or in sleep mode / screen off
The usb2.0 can provide only 500mAh and as far as i know the usb3.0 provides 800mAh.
Seems to be the voltage, USB 2.0 = 5v, USB 3.0 = 12v
Just from what I have read so far, I don't have USB 3.0 so can't test

Because, as user DevCake figured out, if you look closely at the AC adapter it is dual voltage 5v & 15v. He determined (summary): if pin 7 (USB 3.0 spec) in the AC adapter is triggered by the tablet or dock then the voltage switches from 5v to 15v. Also, if you apply 11v-15v directly to the tablet or dock (via USB 2.0 power leads in the 40 pin cable) the charging indicators work. In my opinion, this triggering mechanism makes the AC adapter *more* proprietary than the ASUS 40 pin cable.
Thereafter, everyone went looking for ways to provide 15v optimally (12v also works) to charge the tablet. Over 15v is a mistake, and if you plug any of your other USB 2.0 5v devices into 12v-15v you will burn them out.
There are a bunch of DIY charging threads and comments if you look around.
Good luck.
Well, I've ordered a USB 3.0 hub from Amazon, and hopefully that works.
I know 2.0 will only give the TF a trickle charge, but it wasn't giving me anything, and the indicator was not coming on.
Anyway, I'll be sure to post the result!
Yea keep us updated, and you wouldnt see the indicator as the screen needs to be off for it to charge via USB 2.0 - so as soon as you turn the screen on, it stops charging, kinda like trying to see if the light in the fridge really turns off when you shut the door lol

You would at least think Asus would make their devices work well together! This blows; I'm sure some dev could figure out a way around this, if we knew exactly what was going on.
Read the reply from above. The tf needs 15V in order to charge. Usb was not designed with this kind of charging power in mind. Usb provides a max of 5.25 V.

Charger HTC Question

Hi all.
Could the charger of desire work normally(when check in about phone it must be show AC not USB) for the HTC desire HD and Inspire 4g.
Thanks
If it shows AC that means you are charging through a power outlet and when it's charging by USB you are charging it through a USB cable connected to a computer
Charging through AC is faster then USB

PC has only 500mA current output, your wall charger has 1A output
greater current faster charging-but this does not mean that battery has not its max. charging current!
higher charging current can easily damage your battery and cell phone.
I charge my phone with Xperia charger, with Kindle charger, with Nokia charger and many more. So far I have no problem with my battery. As long as on the end of the cable you have “micro-b usb” and stable (troublefree) electric transformator to supply that cable you can charge your battery. The time to charge may be different but the result is the same.

only the time required to fully charged varies...

I'm using Nokia cable, Sony cable ... All work fine !
As long as the two data cables are connected to eachother, the DHD will recognise it as a wall charger, and it will use 1 ampère. Instead of the 0.5 amps when connected to a PC (when the data cables aren't connected to eachother).
You can buy "charging only" cables. They always charge at maximum rate and do not transmit any data. Usually come with external battery packs etc.
Just to clarify some. (Talking about USB2.0 as 3.0 has a little higher power)
The USB on computers are powered by the motherboard (if not using extra PCI USB card).
Usually the motherboard gives about 500mAh to each USB host. If that host has 4 USB connectors all those connectors share the 500mAh.
And just be careful to not go above 500mAh as some (older) motherboards or even add in card's cannot handle the extra power and will fail to work(permanently).
So a charge-only cable will not make a difference in this situation, same goes for using multiple USB ports as that also brings extra problems with it, as power/voltage doesn't flow in just 1 direction (when using 2 poles). You could blow out USB voltage regulators when connecting different USB power leads together.
As for the phone side you can also use a 5000mAh power source, as the phone will 'take' what it needs. For DHD the max charging power is about 800mAh~900mAh if I'm not mistaken.
As long as its 5V and somewhat stable.
So if you want to charge the DHD (or any other USB chargeable phone, mostly all of them) as fast as possible use the original wall charger.
If you have to do it on the PC/Notebook unplug as much USB devices as possible, so most of the power can go to the phone.
Also make sure the screen of the phone is turned off as that's the biggest battery drain of the DHD. Thus also making charging slower (when on).
I'm using htc charger to charge my e-cigarette . It's works good.
If you plug it into USB socket, and enable "Fast charge" option, does it do anything? Does it block the data transfer and acts like a wall socket (1A) ?

[Q] Charger/Charging Questions

I searched through some of the threads and I didn't see one directly related to my question so here it goes. I have been unable to get my tablet and or dock to charge with any other charger other then the one it came with. I'ver tried a samsun tablet charger, an 8w usb charger, other misc wall blocks etc. Will our tablet only charge with the asus charger? Any thought's or ideas on this would be great.

According to some it is possible to use a USB 5V charger to charge but you need the patience of Job and have it shut down. The simplest answer is that this tablet cannot be charged from ANY USB 5V power source.
The tablet charges at 12V 1.2A. The ASUS Charger is wired in such a way that when using the supplied cable it charges the tablet with 12V @ 1.2 A. When any other USB cable is used the charger will output 5V so that it can be used to charged other devices.
The only other source of chargers is from eBay. Just make sure you buy one that puts out 12Volts with a minimum of 1.2Amps.
There are other answers to this same question just maybe not the way you posed it!

Yes, the tablet (but not the dock) will charge from a 5V USB port, but it will be *very* slow (a few % per hour), and the tablet must be in standby or off.

Yes the original is 15V, it does actually switch to 5V if a non transformer USB device is connected. I'll add that a lot of the cheap eBay chargers output 11V to 12V which is why we have so many issues with the device trying to figure out what it is connected to.... imo.
A regular USB charger is 5V.
The tablet starts detecting a charge at 12V.
The original charger is 15V.
It CAN be charged from 5V, but you have to shut it down and it charges at 3-5% an hour. This isn't "some" mentioning it; it's in the bloody manual.
@sbdags If the cheap chargers indeed charge at between 11V and 12V, that explains the constant beeping people experience whilst using them. It keeps varying between "Charging" and "Not Charging".
So basically it sounds like the best way to charge is from the original charger/cable that came with the unit. This is no biggie. I was just trying to understand why a 8v battery back wasn't charging the tablet, but it wasn't idle, i had it on. So if I wanted to use that I would need to power off the device and it will essentially trickle charge. I don't see to many 15v usb car chargers on the market, though I haven't done extensive research. Thanks for the input.
It does charge (slowly) when on and idle - I regularly charge it overnight hooked up to my PC.

From my understanding the difference of USB and AC charging is the Amps that runs into your phone. I'm not sure what you mean by 'charger' as for me I also use an external charger like a backup battery. If you are referring to a wall charger then you may want to try another charger as this may mean that that charger isn't providing enough Amps to your phone. If you are using a external battery to charge your phone then I would think it's because of that particular external charger. Some only charge at 1A--mine charges at 2.2A--which may trigger a USB charge.
Haha, look, I'm NOT a pro. Nowhere near even. Just chucking in my 2 cents for the purpose of experimentation.
Android determines that you're on an A/C charger by the USB data pins being shorted together. If they're not, or if they're missing entirely, as is the case with a lot of "charge only" cables, then it will only charge in USB mode.
For A/C mode, you need an android compatible charger, and a data cable (not a charge-only cable).
