[Q] Copy Large File - Explorer Crashes??? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to copy over a Top Gear episode - it's 1.59GB. Explorer crashes.
Just copied over a 188MB video and it's fine. Took about 15 seconds. What gives? BTW I'm copying to the internal 16GB of memory instead of the external SD card because the r/w speed is way faster. Last resort I'll copy over the 1.59GB file to my Class 2 MicroSD
Tried renaming the extension it from .mkv to .avi(extension that worked on the 188mb file) and still crashes.
There's 10GB left on the TF(so not a space issue)

wow... it works when I connected it to one of my Windows 7 VMs in VMWare.
Furthermore: I just copied over a 2.05GB movie file from my collection on the host pc(wanted to see if a different large file would cause it to crash). So what's up with this Top Gear episode???? Windows never fails to amuse me...

Did you find a solution to the problem? I'm experiencing exactly the same problem on my Acer Iconia A500 tablet. Also with an Top Gear episode.

Could it have something to do with NTFS vs FAT32 file systems? I don't know what the TF uses, but I assume it is FAT32. Just a thought.

Gawd knows what makes Explorer crash when trying to transfer MKV to the GS2, but I solved it by using Directory Opus instead of Explorer. Everything is then fine.
I wish someone could explain it to me, though. It makes no sense!

you can also rename mkv to avi

Vegan and SD Card2 question

I would like to use SD Card2 as a place to dump my mp3s and videos, but can't get any of the media players to recognize it. Astro sees it fine though. Is this a problem with Vegan or is this just not supported by the media players I've tried thus far?

Yes to both, perhaps:
1. Previous Vegan builds could not see the sdcard2, but I think newer builds do.
2. Most media apps only see the microsd, which in the Gtablet's case is the internal storage. Not many treat all storage as one database. Some allow picking what directory in what storage.
Have to tried to navigate to the file through a file explorer and choosing the appropriate app at that point...seems to work for me in most cases.
VEGAn 1.0.0 beta 4 should work with the microSD - however, keep in mind that there is also a known issues with image and video files that have gone missing it (which we think it the new TnT kernel).
try rockplayer, it has built-in file browser that can browse the external microsd card as well (atucally the whole file system).
I am running Vegan beta 4 right now and sdcard2 works fine for music and stuff.

[Q] Copy files greater than 4GB to memory card

Hi Experts,
How can we copy video files(.mkv) larger than 4GB in size to memory card?
By default its FAT32 and its having a limitation that it wont allow files> 4GB,i tried formatting to NTFS but our phone wont read that format.
Please help
you cannot copy files over 4gb to a Fat32 formatted drive
Fat32 limits the read/write capability of the drive to small file sizes. Files of 4GB and larger can only be copied to NTFS formatted and maybe other linux type (ext3/4) formatted drives.
No way around this..
Thanks John,
How you guys are watching 3D movies now??
IS there any way i can divide the file into small video files and play in our mobile??

Seagate goflex satellite + es file explorer + mx video player.
500gb wireless hard drive containing an embedded linux server and wifi access point with enough battery for about 5 or 6 hours of solid streaming (i.e. video playback at 1080p).
Works pretty good. Works for 3d stuff.

Super it worked..thanks a ton.
Able to convert 5GB file to less than 2GB file in the same 3D and in same quality.

(Q) Problems transferring video files??

I don't know what the deal is. Connected with the stock cord as an MTP device. I keep getting an error that windows explorer has stopped working whenever I try to put a movie on the micro sd card or the internal storage.
Files transfers are painfully slow and I really don't want to have to eject the sd card every time. And then put it back in and transfer from sd card to internal storage.
Am I missing something here? I have the drivers installed and I can see the tf300 in "my computer". And can access it, its just when I go to transfer something.
Can you push it through adb?

I'm a complete noob when it comes to ADB.
I have always avoided it. Right now I am using the SD card swap around method. I assume it should work under MTP with windows explorer right?
you can transfer thru wifi but of course it's slower.

Yah with multiple gigs I think its faster to use the sd card.
I've had the same problem when transferring large files over 1gb. I think this problem is due to the very low write and read speed in the tablet.
I was encountering problems when copying directly from a network share to my tablet/SD card, but when I copied the files to my PC first, and then to my tablet it worked fine.

Thanks I think I also only tried from a network share. I'll have to transfer it to my pc first and try that.
Are you ripping dvds and putting them on the tablet? If so, I am struggling with getting a playable file. I have been using Handbrake and tried every setting. There are many posts of people doing it and even when I follow their settings the file comes out scrambled. Anyone have a tried and true app or method?
TIA

Did transferring to the computer then the SD card work ok? Right now I have a 16 gig SD card and Im trying to transfer a 4.5 gig .m2ts video file from a portable hard drive and I get the message that the SD card is too small even though theres 10 gigs left.
I think the network share thing was the issue. I just plugged in and transferred some files that were local and it went fine.

The sdcard is probably formatted in fat32. Which has a max file limit size of 4gb's. Last night I had to trim the credits off of a movie to get it to just fit under the limit.
looks like you guys have a lot of big files,
i honestly rarely have a file bigger than 2GB, except for some installer-files (like microsoft windows, adobe creative suite)
for movies my files are usually under 1GB
Looks like I spoke too soon. Some PDF files worked through explorer. But even from a local drive I tried one 2.5gb MKV and I got the same error. Kind of annoying but oh well I can deal with it.

See thats the weird thing. I had some movies saved as .M4V which are a little over 4 gigs, they transferred over fine. But for some reason it doesnt like storing .m2ts files.
same issue as lightsout
I just noticed the same issue when trying to copy a movie file from my win7 pc to the internal storage over the usb cable. I don't have an SD card installed. I've just realized that it goes fine for avi's. I copied a 1.5GB avi over and it went fairly quickly, but if I try to copy mkv files - I get the Windows Explorer error. This frustrates me.:crying:
Any ideas?
No error here with USB stock v30 and rooted but most mkvs I send are just under or at 1gb which is what handbrake gives me when transcoding a DVD. I do get a warning each time that the video may not work but I just ignore it and the video plays fine once transferred. Using win7 at the other end.

Well that's the difference, then? Maybe I need to root....??? The mkv files were under 1gb.
Certainly couldn't hurt anything but the last time I sent a video file I was not rooted. I have since put root on but have not had the need for video since then. Perhaps I should try to be sure it still works
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app
So you're saying that you were able to move mkv files without root?
Correct and other than a windows 7 warning that it might not play it transferred like any other file. Transfer time sucked on USB 2 connection but I'm hearing that is common on this tablet. I have not sent any video files since I rooted but I don't see why that would matter. Tablet was in media mode.

MicroSD card confusion

UplI have my TF700(which I nicknamed The Beast), for a few days and I need help with understanding setting up my 32 GB MicroSD card.
A few days after getting my TF700, my ordered SanDisk 32GB card came in the nail.
I did not reformat it, as it seemed to work fine.
Now comes my confusion.
With the new card inside, I did the USB connection thing to my Windows computer.
It immediately said loading drivers and in Computer, I. saw two new drives listed.
One the internal storage, the other the MicroSD card.
I created a couple of folders and copied over the contents of two CD worth of songs, all in Ogg audio format to the card. No problems.
I opened up Poweramp on my TF700, had it scan for music and it found my Ogg audio files.
Poweramp works great and plays everything. store my music in only Flac and Ogg formats.
Plugged in my headphones and the music sounded incredible.
Now the weird stuff.
I wanted to move some data files over to my card. Plan to have the volatile data files on the card and the more static apps on the internal storage.
I opened File Expert on my TF700 and it was bizarre. I see these folders showing that are shown as being on my external card, but in reality, they are not.
There is a mnt folder and inside that is the SDCARD folder.
Then when I go back in File Expert and select the Internal storage, I see a folder called removable and sub folder of that called MicroSD. I opened it and there are where my real MicroSD files are.
What the heck happened?
No problems redoing things, but I don't understand. Did I need to reformat my card inside the TF700?.
Thanks in advance.
Jon
That's just the way asus tablets handle external storage (it could be the same with other tablets but I only had a prime and this). You're fine. You could use asus's stock file manager app to get to your microsd card easier.
I don't use File Explorer, but ES File Explorer, but I don't think it makes a difference, but might.
Anyway, on the TF700T when using a file explorer the internal storage is SD card. The microSDHC is actually underable "removable" storage. You'll see both listed when you hit the root directory. It took me a few minutes to figure it out.

[Completed] Problem with SD card and audio files

I just bought a new SD card and have been transferring files from my old to the new one. It is mostly music, cca 30 gb from the old one and additional 10 to 15 from my pc. Anyway I transferred all of them and checked if they are there on my PC. IT said that i have some 20 gb fre of 64 gb. When I turned on the phone and went into Poweramp only a small amount of music was there. When I went to storage settings it said I only used 15 gb of my SD and going into file manager just showed folders but there were no files. I formatted the SD and copied all files again this time slowly copying 3-4 folders at a time and watching over the whole process and again the same thing. So I went over all those files and it turns out that those files are all my rips of cds that I did while I was still using iTunes and some of them with winamp. All torrented music was there. They are MPEG-4 audio files while torrents are mostly mp3. The thing all those same files still work on my old SD which is the same apart from capacity (class 10 32 gb). So it happens that files aren't transfered at all and not just that poweramp just doesn't recognize them and it worked fine for my old SD.
I'm using HTC One m8 on stock ROM android 5.0 with htc sense
thanks in advance for any insight you might have to fix this problem
I thought about that too but the thing is exactly the same files are missing twice while others are being copied.
Bump.
EDIT: just a small update, it's not about file type because some of the files that are mp3 are not copied while some mpeg-4 are. Anyway, all photos are transferred correctly but still audio files are sometimes copying and sometimes not
EDIT 2: so I just tried copying those songs that are missing once more for one album. they were copied and file manager said they are as big as they should be (around 10 mb) and poweramp recognize for their full running time. Bt only first few seconds of each song play and they are switched to the next one
