This may seem like a ridiculously noobish question but I can't find the external SD partition in any file manager. I'm rooted and neither root explorer or astro shows any partition for the external card. I just placed a 32gb micro SD in there and the /SD folder refers to the internal 12 GB of storage. What am I missing here?

It would be under /sdcard/external_sd in root explorer.
/sdcard/external_sd

What directories on the filesystem denote the onboard flash memory versus an external (8gb) sd card i've plugged into the back? Isn't the internal flash labeled as a sd card as well as my removavle sd card? I googled it a bit but had no luck.

The external SD card shows up as a sub-directory named "sd" under the internal SD card if you use the My Files app.
/sdcard is internal
/sdcard/sd is external (your card)

Just a question. Are you looking at the sdcard OR sdcard_external sdcard in your file explorer???

sd card. in linda file manager
Reformat it. Either it is messed up and there is unused space not accounted for, or it is a bogus card and not really 16gb (many China cards are fakes).
What you are seeing is the internal SD card that came with the phone, it's non removable and show up as SD. The 16gb card you put in is listed as external like mhsamma said.
when using root explorer, sd card is being shown but when click on it seems to go to internal storage???
The internal storage is named "sd card"... external storage is named "external1".
Don't ask me why.

Thanks mate!!! That did the trick!
I just received my 32gb SD card today and placed it into my GS3. In looking at my file explorer app I noticed I have an 'sdcard' and an 'extmount' or something like that. So, how did I have an sdcard from folder w/o previously having an sdcard installed? Also, do I need to do anything to get that info off my device? I'm not rooted if that helps.
Thanks!

SD card is your internal memory. Ext-sd card is your external micro SD card. Different phones and different roms have their own ways of labeling these. It's normal and correct.
So my brother had a few thousand songs on his external sd card and I wanted them. So I pulled his sd and put it in my notes, and used root explorer to copy and paste the songs. Now when I put the sd card back he has less than 100 songs (through power amp) and root explorer doesn't even show an ext sd card.
So I moved on to ES file explorer and I'm still unable to access ext sd card.
So my question is did I accidently dismount his sd card? Through system memory I can see that there is an ext sd but it looks like nothing is on it?
