Facebook chat in Google Talk - Thunderbolt General

I've seen this in a few other forums, but thought I'd post it here. Always wanted to use my Google talk app, but no one I'm close with really uses an android phone or the service very much, so I started looking for a solution.
I just followed http://technobuz.com/2011/05/add-facebook-chat-to-google-chat/ and it's working like a champ. It didn't mess up any of my contacts either, which is a good thing, because I keep them clean and neat as can be.
Only flaw is some facebook profiles show up as random numbers while others actually show their names. I just sent them a quick "hi" then looked on facebook messages to see who they were, and changed the name in Google Talk.

Im guessing you since you havnt updated, that this is safe, without hacking attempts on your facebook?

You could use im+ and have all of her major messengers rolled into one.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2

Yes, as well as trillian, xabber and meebo, each with thier own quirks and annoyances.
The reason i asked is last i remember, meebo failed pretty badly on mobile, xabber requires a constant connection and doesnt get offline messages, trillian hasnt got their act together on mobile either. last i checked on im+, it was horribly ad ridden and failed to stay connected too.
The only mobile client ive seen work consistantly is Talk, and with an external bouncer for facebook messages, talk stores the messages offline, and gets fetched through the app.
In a non quantifiable standpoint, i like ics's talk app

I don't have the connection issues you're talking about with im+. The free version is quite ad ridden though. Download black mart and get it that way without ads. I paid for it myself and the only problem I have with it is it will drain your battery if you don't exit the app and go to push mode.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2

There's definitely a benefit to using the GTalk app built in to Google+ or Gmail, instead of a standalone program which uses more of your computer's resources. Everything is going the cloud/Chromebook way, and this is just another helpfully tip. It seems every month I have less and less actual programs open, and more is done via Google Chrome and HTML5.

New Facebook app

Is anyone else not seeing the new Facebook app in the market? Or when you to the online market, it says compatible with TF?

The 1.6? For all the previous excitement it's not very amazing.
It comes up as not compatible with Asus Transformer. (Maybe a tablet version planned at some point?)
I'll probably just Dropbox it and install it anyway.
Yup, they've removed tablet support. It's basically a downgrade, and it wasn't a very good app in the first place. It lacked even basic functionality from the website, such as the ability to ignore posts from "friends" [eg. bands, products, etc.] that you've ignored on the website. There's no mention of that being fixed in this release anyway, so no big loss -- the app's nearly unusable in its current state, as my friends' posts are hidden in a huge wall of advertising from all the pages I'm a fan of (but don't really want to read the ads from).
yes....the FB app sucks.
Try the alternative app written by a member on XDA here...its' called "Friend Me" and it's really nice.

I've been using Friendme and FriendCaster and they work just fine. Though you might as well use the browser based version anyway. For me the only real use of the app is to integrate it with your contact list and to get desktop notifications. None of these apps do this. I'd like to see facebook integration to the level of where HTC Sense is. Love the notifications on my phone and the contact integration. I miss that when not using my phone. But hey, nothing is perfect.
My sole concern with these third-party apps is that it'd be very easy to make one that works just fine, but also phones home with your username and password. There's no way to audit code and confirm it doesn't do so (and even if there was, I'm not a programmer and would have to rely on somebody else's opinion).
That said, for those who are happy to trust such things, it's great that somebody's making options -- Facebook's own one totally sucks.
Attached Facebook 1.6 taken from my phone... works just like the old version on our TF (still lame, but it has notifications lol).
same here I can get to the Download page on the Market, but it wont download at all!! you can access it thru a direct link or qr code
app is better but there's no option to view your friends photo
I find how Developers blacklist certain phones being overused to much. Clearly the Facebook app runs on tablets and works, so why they would blacklist it is beyond me. All it does is limit their users. If it runs and works don't blacklist it is incompatible.
Same thing has happened to Words with Friends -- granted, it doesn't scale perfectly to a tablet screen, but it's passable. Not sure if my installed version will even receive updates, so I just update on my Evo and the BT File Transfer the app over to my TF.

It's being speculated that Facebook blacklisted all honeycomb devices because they will have a tablet version out soon - considering how slow and lame the development has been on the phone version, a tablet version seems very unlikely, but who knows?!

Has anyone noticed that third-party facebook apps, like Friendcaster and FriendMe don't show all the posts that Facebook.com and the official Facebook app do? I was blown away when I visited Facebook.com to see how many posts and pictures were up that never showed on FriendCaster. It's like it blocked 30% of my friends wall messages

Why not just use your browser to get to facebook? The TF is large enough for you to view facebook as if you were using a laptop.

The same reason why we use a gmail app for getting mail, or a twitter app for tweets - apps are more convenient and offer OS integration. Of course, if they only provide some functions of the full site, they are less useful

Go SMS app using a lot of RAM

ive been using GO SMS for quite some time, but the last couple of updates ive noticed the app using ALOT of RAM. ranging from 50mb to 250mb(monitored this using system panel app) in turn causing my phone to freeze and requiring either a hard reset or battery pull? anyone else experiencing problems with this app. i love the app and im sure its a simple bug fix, but just wanted to know if anyone else had similar problems
also i did try running go in 'lite-mode' and still it ate up a lot of ram
Hey Goldenman,
I'm using GoSMS and GoLauncher. I've not had any freezing.
I haven't really been paying attention to the Ram that the progrms are taking.
I need to keep an eye on that. I will say this; after the GB update, I don't have the free RAM that I thought I would.
I use GO SMS & the Go Launcher too, & i have noticed it using more memory, but mine hasn't peaked that much, hopefully they will address it cause they're good about weekly updates.
I'm using Go launcher and Go SMS with no issues. My current memory with go SMS is 2.5 Meg.
Are you up to date? They released like 4 or 5 minor updates in the last 2 weeks or so irc. Go and gb have been sweet as on my phone.

i uninstalled it this morning to see if maybe it was just me, but ill reinstall and run it for the better part of the day and see how it goes. go makes great products i would hate to stop using them ... i also use go contacts and no problems with that. i used to use go launcher but i dont find it as snappy as launcher pro ill report back
after a day of use with the new update i still find the ram use of go sms to be pretty high (75mb-100mb) ... granted i send/recieve on average 150-250 texts a day ( i get a lot of notifications from espn, twitter, etc) i still dont think the RAM use should be that high? any ideas? they said the bug was fixed but im still experiencing high ram use?
Go SMS Freezing Phone
I'm having the same issue where my phone freezes up and needs the battery pulled and/or a cache reset to get back up and running. My GoSMS has over 1600 messages in it, which I assume should not be a problem because there are a lot of people who like to store their old messages. What can we do to fix it?
Do you guys regularly close the program (long press back key)?
I find Google voice begins to lag a bit and eat ram if you text a lot, but just simply force closing it yourself seems to "reset" the ram it's using.
I don't use go SMS, just thinking maybe it relates to how it happens with Google voice.

This is most likely the problem because the app will cache all your texts you've looked at when open. It so you can scroll through them easier. So if you text or get 100+ texts in a day it's bound to flood your ram. If you close the app fully then it will clear the cache and the next time you load it up you will have to have the app load them manually in order to see older texts.

It's because the app stores your conversations in memory so when you go to read them it won't take any time to load. The more texts you make in a day the more it has to load. To counter this you can kill the app in the middle of the day and don't try to load older parts of the conversation. Also deleting texts every once in awhile helps

I think they're right, about it keeping old messages in memory so you can access them faster.
I have around 4k total messages, and GOSMS never uses more than 25 mbs, usually uses around 21. Running it normally with ICS theme and my own backgrounds, if that helps any on the usage.
Sent from my amazing G2X running Bionic Reloaded v1.2.1
Go sms shouldnt be doing that. Save your "user defined" settings for your themes and just uninstall it completley and reinstall then restore your theme settings and you should be fine... I was using the go chat and go fb apps back in the day but i found them to be a huge battery hog..
I also only run go sms on normal mode without go chat...
I used GO SMS for a long time until it did the same thing for me and started eating an abnormal amount of RAM. Was never able to figure out why.

[New App] AirDroid Lets Your Desktop Control Your Android Phone Over WiFi

For those who spend a lot of time looking at a computer, and can't be bothered to look at their phone very often, Sand Studio has introduced AirDroid, an app that allows users to control their Android Phone from a computer via WiFi.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=WfNnQxpw7Uw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfXRhSIm-m0
The great thing about AirDroid is that it works - it's easy to start up, and functions flawlessly (in my experience). The interface is also very polished - mimicking a desktop launcher complete with moveable icons, a task bar, and controls that allow you to do just about anything.
One of the most impressive features is the ability to access SMS messages, manage them, and send messages right from a web browser. Users can also manage contacts, uninstall/backup apps (AirDroid will download your apps as apk files), browse files, access the Android Market, and manage music and ringtones, in addition to the ability to look at phone information from CPU status to battery level and beyond.
Best of all, AirDroid is completely free from the Android Market. With all the powerful features it offers, this app is certainly worth checking out.

This is without a doubt 'the best' app for controlling your phone from your browser. I've installed and played with many and this one tops the lot in my opinion.
It's clean, easy to use, great interface (both on the phone and PC).
Side note: This thread would probably be much better off in General Android Apps and Themes forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=530. The app isn't specific an LG Optimus.

I'm a little hesitant to try out apps like this as well but they have nothing but good feedback on the market and a good following on both Facebook and Google+, as well as having their own website, so I was happy to give it ago.
@smackdownn Yeah I am with you on the whatsapp, this app is brilliant.
@Nucleotide & SpyderTracks Seriously? Whats the issue with privacy? Scared these devs are going to email or sms your gf while you are out? Either that or learn to hide your porn somewhere that is not your phone. I have said this before on so many occasions, when you were using a nokia/winmo/other NON android phone, they sneakily NEVER asked for permissions, but you installed apps that could pretty much do anything on your phone anyway
This app is by far the best solution I have tried in this regard, it just works and damn well too
@Cornelha
Lol.... I get what you're saying, but I think it's a little naive... the information we hold on smartphones these days compared to "our old nokias" means security is vital. After years of dodgy torrents, malware and hacked accounts, I've learnt to take it a bit more seriously, albeit probably to the extreme

I agree. I don't have anything I would call "sensitive data" on my phone but I do have a lot of contact information such as names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and other information which although not really sensitive, I still don't want other people to have - especially if I don't know about it. Not only that but apps can track your location, the buttons you press on your phone, numbers dialed, text messages sent, websites you visited, and the list goes on.
With that in mind I take caution when installing any app. I check for things like the amount of reviews on the market, the quality of the reviews (good vs. bad), does the developer have a website, a Facebook page with a good following, and so on.

New Facebook for Android UI!

Hi guys!
So today I opened up my Facebook application and was graced with a beautiful new, fluid UI. I am a member of the Alpha Team, however I have rigorously tested this new interface and I cannot find any bugs with it what so ever.
Gone is the horrible sidebar that once was, the layout is extremely similar to that of the latest Twitter application, apart from the Settings are not on a three button menu.
I've uploaded some screenshots to my Dropbox, take a look here!

I have heard a few people moan about this in the past, but I have genuinely never had any issues with Facebook and battery. In the settings there is an option to the reduce the refresh rate to just once every four hours, I think you can even disable it completely to be honest. I have Facebook on my Note 3 though and with or without Facebook installed I pretty much get the exact same battery life.

Agreed. Ugly, and bored.
The UI work is fine. As mentioned, the wakelocks and battery use are terrible. Even when I turn off sync and notifications, Facebook causes more wakelocks than most other apps and uses a lot of data. They should address that but it seems they never will so I use the web sites.

totally agree!
It's server decided. Any issues with not seeing the new UI have nothing to do with the application. users who get the new newsfeed SHOULD get the new UI. Not definite in all cases though.
I "think" I got it
People are asking about this new UI all over the internet, and when my friend came asking why he still has the old UI on his Note 3, while I have the flat UI on my Note 2, I had to dig into it...
First of all, we both have exactly the same version of the apk from the Play store (6.0.0.28.28), I even sent him the apk from my device to be 100% sure. He logs into his account on his Note 3, gets old UI. I log into my account on his Note 3 after clearing data, I get the old UI as well (so it is not server/account related issues as mentioned before, we even have been sharing the same router at the time).
He logs into his account on my Note 2, he gets new UI. I log him out, force stop, clear all data, and log into my account, I get the OLD UI !! Weird right ?!
I looked everywhere in the settings, maybe I made a toggle or something before ... then I remembered I don't see the "Home" settings under the FB app settings. I had "Home" installed previously and then removed. So I installed "Home" and activated it. Logged into Facebook and voila, the new UI !
I logged off again, force stopped, cleared data, and removed "Home" entirely. Logged in again, same old UI. Installed "Home" one more time, activated it, logged into FB, and the new UI came up. I uninstalled "Home", logged out (didn't clear data), and logged in again, and I still got the new UI. So I am guessing it has to be related to the Facebook "Home" app, somehow it leaves a setting in FB app data to enable the new UI !
Tried doing the same on my friend's N3, but "Home" is for funny reasons isn't compatible with his device as of now. Sent him the apk and installed it, it nagged that it isn't compatible with this device, so we couldn't truly "activate" it. He still has the old UI.
I hope this casts a light on the problem of not having the new UI and helps others. I only tried it on a couple of "similar" devices, so your feedback is also appreciated
What was your exact process for setting up the home launcher? I have a sgs4 and tried this, no dice.

Multiple Facebook Processes issue

I seem to be having a weird issue with my S8+. Whenever I open a Facebook notification, instead of going into the already open Facebook app and refreshing to the Notification point, I get a new Facebook app instance launched (up to 3 at a time).
Also the erratic notifications are not visible in the main app, even if I refresh.
I have only one Facebook account, no third party FB apps. Just the Facebook (not Beta) app and FB Messenger app (and that works OK).
Given that the FB has burned through half my 2GB data allowance this month I'm inclined to blame some of it on the triple instance eating through resources.
I've been reading a lot on how the real FB app is a total battery hog and Data hog due to running background processes. I can't comment on your odd issue when opening FB but suggest you consider an FB alternative. I'm trying out Friendly for FB. It includes Messenger too. Seems to be way less intrusive (running in background) but I can't quote any stats for you. I am seeing better battery life now. I don't look too much at data usage since I have unlimited. Good luck!

It's because the Facebook app sucks. I would suggest turning any auto play/upload options to save data by the way.

Yeah that was burning a lot of people when Facebook first enabled it and of course it's on by default in the app when you install it clean.
Same issue!
I'm also a Nexus 6P upgrader, and I'm experiencing the same issue! It's actually the ONLY annoyance I have with the 8+, though I was also quite fond on generic Android, so I'm working to adapt my phone settings to that experience, as much as I can...
I'll be interested to see if there's a solution to this. Currently, I'm just avoiding clicking on the notifications, or remembering to close the extra Facebook app(s) if I do.

Yeah I have this too not seen a fix yet
Same thing happening to me. Are you also getting the Facebook status bar issue where it's going wonky all the time?
I think as a workaround if you just launch FB app and go to notifications within the app you are fine. As you said if you go from a FB notification it seems to open a new FB process which is definitely not good for battery or memory.

Problem is the app doesn't show the (same) notifications I get from SystemUI. So I get different notifications from Android and different from the app. It's like they are fighting each other.
I tried disabling the Samsung preinstalled Facebook packages but the issue remains.
I seem to have resolved the issue.
First a couple of notes.
I've had the phone since May. I got the June and July updates, but issue was not resolved.
I did a full reset and issue persisted.
I did a full reset without any restores from Google or Samsung. Didn't even login to my accounts. Same thing.
So I did a full flash of the latest official ROM using Odin. In the process I used the European unbranded CSC instead of my provider's (CYV Cyta Vodafone).
Problem solved. So apparently it was something to do with that specific branch. Minor market would also explain why I seem to be the only one reporting this.
Hmmmm! I seem to have this problem. Not rooted on a G955W. Anymore clues?
I do have it as well
Same issue on note 8
I seem to have a similar issue where Facebook will have more than one instance running after a while. I can alternate between the two instances running by pushing home and then going back into the app so for instance it will be in a video where I left off and then when I push home it will go to a an instance where I am commenting on a post and then when I push home again and go back it will go back to the video. The only way to temporarily fix it is to force quit the app for me.
