I want to use my TouchPro for tracking a long route i will be travelling shortly. When I turn of my device using the button on top when using a gps tracking-tool, the gps will disconnect and need to search for satellites again after turning on the device.
Does anybody know a trick (maybe in the registry) to keep the GPS alive?
I am also curious about this.
Finally I managed to find this thread!!! I am also facing this problem and was wondering if there was anyway to prevent the GPS from closing and losing connection with satellites when the phone goes into sleep mode. Anyone with any ideas PLEASE HELP!!!
Btw I am using TomTom Navigator 7 with Australian maps...

I seem to recall that TrackyPro has a function which will turn the screen off whilst still tracking the route. Is that the type of thing you're looking for?
Well basically I just want the GPS to still have the lock on the satellites EVEN when the device goes into standby. It's frustrating when after 3 minutes (my settings for power management) the device goes into standby and you realise that the GPS is closed when you turn it back on. So yup, as you said correctly, I want the GPS to still function even when the screen is off. Please guide me to wherever I can get the solution as I use alot of GPS!!!
All good GPS software should have option to keep device on all the time while GPS fixed.
I dont think it's possible to keep GPS on while device is on standby mode. Anyway, GPS should stay on even if screen light is turned off for power save.
Well I am using TomTom Navigator 7 with Australian maps, and I have tried looking at the options in TomTom and I couldn't find any setting to keep the screen turned on while GPS is working. And you are correct in that applications such as GPS and Bluetooth are impossible to stay running when the device goes into standby, as this feature is an OEM feature in all Windows Mobile devices to save power. The only way out I see, is to go to Settings>System>Power>Advanced and untick 'Turn off device if not used for...' This way the backlight can be turned off (which saves power) but the device itself is not totally off. This method will still consume power since the device is technically not in standby, but it's probably the best we can get since there is just no way to have GPS to function with the screen totally off ie in standby.

I don't think that TT has the option you need - it takes its power options from the device (including screen brightness). That is probably because TT probably thought most people would have their device plugged in whilst navigating given the power required for navigating with the screen on.
I find that another side effect of this is that if I am driving on a bright day, I need to turn off the auto light level feature of the Raph to make sure the screen is as bright as possible.

I think it's a matter of semantics, but it may help you find a solution faster:
What you need is a tool / solution / procedure that turns only the screen off WITHOUT putting the phone in standby mode. Try searching for that; if you include the whole GPS tracking wish then you might not find what you're looking for so quickly.

As far as I always remembered, the only time the screen can be turned off is when the phone goes into standby. In other words screen off=standby and vice versa and no other way to breakup this association. The option I have considered is what I have mentioned above, ie just letting the backlight turn off, but NOT turning the device off. But this will be a problem if you need to look at the screen constantly for navigation and cannot survive with just voice navigation. If you really do need the backlight to be turned on all the time, then go to Settings as well and untick the TUrn off backlight option too. Power will be gone in no time, then you probably will need to consider a in-car charger then...

Hi, first post for me
I have wanted to do exactly the same thing, that is, keep the GPS tracking on my HTC Touch Diamond with the phone in "off" mode. The only way I have found to do it, is this; play music via a Bluetooth headset (you can pull out the jack-plug too, so no actual sound is heard). Now when you turn the phone "off" the GPS will continue to track.
There probably is some simple software out there that would work better, but this is my solution

Perhaps this helps...
Go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\State\Suspend
and create a DWord value named NAV1: with value decimal 0 (0 means power on and here is a complet list of values)
This allos HTC GPS driver to stay on on suspend mode. I think this allows any application accesing GPS to get data while the PDA is off.
Can someone test it and report back?
If this works, i can create a CAB to easily deployment.

Hi there, thanks alot for your discovery, will surely test it out later. With TomTom Navigator that I am using, once you have planned a route and it starts to navigate, the screen stays on forever. What I said earlier in my previous posts are irrelevant since TomTom just keeps the screen on and never dims the backlight nor turns off the device. So unchecking the Turn Off Device after XX mins is useless. Anyway we need some fix which can 1) Allow us to turn off the screen to save power but still have TomTom running and giving us navigation instructions and 2) Does not disconnect from satellite fixes when device is put into standby.
Your reg edit sounds like it will work, but will have to confirm it first. A cab file will be really appreciated. Cheers!
EDIT: preliminary testing: Turned on GPS outdoors, managed to get a satellite fix. Did not plan any route. Turned off screen (ie standby), turned back on, GPS signal was lost. Had to wait few seconds to reconnect to the satellites. Unsure about voice navigation while screen is off but since when I turned the screen back on the signal was lost already I don't think there will be any navigation when screen off. In short --> DOESNT WORK.
I didn't read through everyone's response, but what about just using a car charger, and setting the power settings to never turn off when turned on? You can turn down screen brightness if you're worried about the screen itself, but that should keep you connected at all times, and the battery should remain charged as well.
This also avoids registry tweaks that may have side effects. Simple, and painless in my mind.

The change of NAV1: only affect to GPS device, so perhaps the nav software need more devices to stay on to work (or really the soft changes the power state of devices itself). I tested the changes above with HTC GPS Tool and seems to work, but seems navigation software are not the same... sorry.

I'am using the IGO8 Navi Software on my Touch Pro.
I ride by mountain bike often and today I wanted to save the track I normally ride.
I turned on IGO 8 and get a satellite fix and started riding, when I came to my first check point I realised that on stand by mode, the IGO8 wasn't getting satellites.
So I minimised the IGO8 and I had the today screen on. I unticked turn-off device and turned the keylock on.
This was my only solution, it would be great to have the GPS running when switched off.

Trackme has a GPS powersave mode which allows the screen to be turned off but will still record your track. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340667

sportyfy is good .. but om mine HD2 its stops after a couple min.
I've just started trying navmi, which seems good. Not tried anything else yet, but will give sportypal a go at some point as well for comparison.

sportypal is user friendly, what is your problem with this prog
I am also using SportyPal and I'm completely pleased with it.
Combine the Prog with the "Keep Awake" Application to prevent standby and all will work fine.
Without "KeepAwake" the GPS Signal gets lost after standby is active.
I use RunGPS (http://www.rungps.net/wiki/DownloadsEN). Not free, but there are ways and you can trial it for 14 days. You can change the sport type, I have used it for running, cycling and snowboarding and it outputs to excel, pdf, and also to google earth KMZ files.

Now I use RunGPS (fee), but before I used SportyPal, and is very good too. I recommend it
I test RUN.GPS too, but want to try sportypal also. Maybe i will go running this evening and test sportypal.
But in sportypal there is no "STOP"-Button on screen while i´m running, is this right? How can i stop counting when i got finished? Do i have to press the "End" Button (because there is another question ... do you realy want to end...)? I don´t want to press two buttons when i go through finish - so i can not measure my time exactly.
I've been using endomondo and sportypal, both very much the same, found endomondo to be slightly better
Can i get *.gpx file or similar from endomondo or sportypal?
I don´t know how to get this files - i only was able to upload the data to their website - but not to get the file for myself.

You can download any track you want from SPortypal.com, just go on the workout you want to have, and on the right bellow the stats click on the "Export GPX"
I tried KeepAwake - but still GPS not logging anymore if i got to standby on my hd2 with hardware-button. KeepAwake was active - (showing in green - app detected). I entered: Run.GPS.TrainerUV.exe
If i lock the screen with the little yellow symbol in run.gps itself, then logging is not broken.
But it´s not usable to press the little icon while jogging - so i have to press the hardware-button.
Any idea?

KeepAwake won't prevent you from going into standby/sleep when you press the button manually, it will just prevent standby when certain applications are running but you're not using the phone (when the phone would automatically go into standby due to idle).

I haven't tried RunGPS, but I currently use NavMi, which has has an option to turn off (blank) the screen. This is a handy big button that is easy to press (though I normally start logging and blank the screen just before I start running in any case). This combined with setting the lock so it locks on 'wake up' works well for me (though I use S2U2 as my lockscreen, which has further options) - you can also press the Start Menu and lock from there.
(NavMi also makes sure the phone doesn't go into standby, so it keeps GPS working and logging without having to use something like KeepAwake.)
I think Run.GPS is working without KeepAwake, it will hold the phone awake itself.
Problem is the power-button of the HD2: If i blank the screen and put my phone into the armholder, all works fine. If i accidently press power-button, phone will wake up and screen is locked - so no problem till here. But if i then press power-button second time, phone will go into standby and gps-fix will get lost.
Power-Button of HD2 is really bull****, because it is higher than surface and you can press it accidently, while phone is in a pocket or armholder...

You'd still have to drag and drop into the circle.
I wouldn't mind a personal notes app' on my startup screen like I had on my WM 2003 SE screen.

You can try downloading WidgetLocker from the Marketplace.
This will allow you to replace your current lock screen with something a bit more customizable. You can - as the name indicates - put widgets on your screen. So you can put a Bluetooth widget in the top left so you always know where it is.
Or you can go even more lazy and get Llama. It's a location switcher. IE: When I am at work I have the "quiet" profile on were no ringtones ring during the condition set from my hours at work and the location of the phone. Once I leave work and under other conditions with "leaving work" I instructed llama to turn on my BT until I get home and connect to my home wifi.
And that my friend is what I call a free app lol.
Good Ideas I like Sense 3.0 lock screen... so I think I wont change it for now.
About llama, it sounds great, but... what about battery? does it affect battery life much?

Seems good, some questions though.
1. Is it supposed to be able to turn the screen on? Take phone out of pocket, proximity sensor detects values that indicate there's nothing near (Sorry, dunno how / what values are calculated / used) and viola, screen on?
2. Dunno if I've set it up incorrectly. But, currently, if I turn on my screen, via the power button (Sony Xperia S), the stock lockscreen will show, and either one of two things will happen. Either I unlock it successfully, and the split second I'm completing the unlock, the phone will screen off, and engage the lockscreen - after unlocking this, can I get into my phone. OR it'll do what I've previously mentioned, without input.

Yup, it turns the screen on as well. The values are pretty much just FAR and NEAR for most proximity sensors, so once it detects that there's no object close to it, it should turn the screen on. If it's not turning on at all, that might be the root of the problem i.e. it might be causing the unlock issue as well...Hmmm...I checked out your phone specs and since you said "stock lockscreen", I think it's safe to assume you're on the stock ROM but are you still on Gingerbread? If so, that partially explains the issue. Some Gingerbread ROMs have compatibility issues with the app that are very similar to what you've described, I have no idea why but I'm still looking into it. I had to fix ALOT of Gingerbread issues to get it working this far lol. If you're not on GB though, I guess I need to hunt for an Xperia and begin testing/debuggin. :fingers-crossed:

I like it! Works fine in my SII stock rom. It will be perfect if i could enable a sound notification when turns off the screen. Not really necessary but cool 4 me (car unlock beep-beep)

Yea, it's unfortunate that foregrounding requires the notification icon. You could try using the app without foregrounding, it works for some people. Adding more notification icons should be easy, won't take much time. =) Which ones do you think I should add? A small black dot would disappear on most black status bars (but it'll look like there's an empty space in the status bar so it'll look a little weird)...

The proximity sensor uses very little battery and the app itself is pretty light (4-5MB RAM). So far I've only gotten one deep sleep complaint out of 3500+ downloads but no battery issues.
im fine with the black dot, it will keep my bar looking empty

Finally! Found a way to completely remove the icon and the notification from the status bar when the app is foregrounded. It'll be in the next update (today or tomorrow). It can still be enabled manually from the Notifications section but yea, enjoy the emptiness of your status bar. xP

One thing I notice (which is NO WHERE CLOSE to a big deal)
The launcher I use (Nova) I hide the status bar and use a gesture to bring it down. When ever Intellicover turns the screen on, the status quickly shows itself and then goes back hidden, not more than a half second of this, but I cannot select anything on the screen until after that status bar thing happens
I like the concept of the app, and it works fine with my sensors. I have one complaint though, I don't like how when the phone screen turns on, it opens to the Intellicover App. Sure I can set it to go to the home screen, but I don't always want that. Once Intellicover is running, I don't want to ever see it again unless I manually launch it from the app drawer. If I have Chrome open and I have to suddenly put my phone down or in my pocket, I'd like to pull my phone back out and have Chrome still be on the screen, just like happens now using the sleep button.
Turns my dumb flip cover on my note 2 into a smart cover. Thanks

Actually, that shouldn't be happening. Once set you never have to see it again. I'm not quite sure what could be triggering this but if you could provide a little information about the OS/phone model/etc. I could try to get a hold on the device and try to replicate the error...

You can buy the unlocked version from Google and use it on Verizon.

Jokes aside, you can unlock a Verizon P2 if it hasn't taken the Jan update yet. Visit in store and ask to see a P2 in box, no SIM or wifi please. The box will indicate the factory software. Once you find a winner (hurry, they're fading from inventory) just carefully apply the unlock steps and enjoy.

Yes, you should, Pixel mobiles are the best mobiles according to my friend's opinion, I'm also going to buy it next week but first I have to write my assignment.
So, I now own a new Pixel 2 Google Edition.
1st Pros:
Luv that its already stripped down and lean in the stock OS. @8.1.0 ver.
1st Cons:
Device does not report battery lvl correctly in notifications tab, always states 100%, icon always shows full.
WiFi icon appears to show only on, no signal strength at all.
Totally dislike notifications tab period! Too much redundancy! To much access points to the same stuff.
Decided that it should be a central home screen. A group of 5, home at center. Now that leaves 4 sides or edges.
1 edge for calling and texting, swipe left edge
1 edge for social media outlet of choice, swipe edge right
1 edge for camera and video, swipe edge down
1 edge for video and music playback, swipe edge up
Or could be other choices instead. Point being all the different access methods, repeat the same things so lets get simple.......................
Its about personalized customization of actual use. right now we just customize the presentation of gui's, color, form. There is nothing intuitive about OS use tho!. Things like smart bullitain are really useless and forced on us, seriously, wonder around with a live feed always going.......no.

Interesting: on 8.0 the Pixel 2 battery meter stuck at 100% charge for a long time (not permanently), but that was fixed by updates. Should not be a problem with 8.1.
And the WiFi icon works just as expected, i.e. shows signal strength (though no "activity arrows" if you were used to those). So this sounds like something is wrong.
I'm not sure what you are saying about the notifications. Can you give some examples?

I don't have anything forced on me - I just turned off (or didn't turn on) anything that didn't interest me (with Google's launcher being one of the first things to go). There are always alternatives.
So I have discovered that enabling the ui demo mode was the problem with the status bar and battery level reporting, enabling this bad.
I have learned of and enabled the system ui tuner. This ended all the phone functions, status reporting, very sweet. Now the status bar just reflects certain running services.
I also installed the Android P theme launcher, I like it. Has a sidebar option, the ability to hide the status bar, the ability to alter dock settings. So I essentially dumped some cpu reporting cycles, so to speak, let see how bat life responds.
Without root, I have gotten closer to what I want. Need to get TWRP installed and a nandroid made.

Ambient- Always On Display, many internet posts for disabling. Do Not Disable!
Affects the screen saver display and wake up, touch screen. The touch screen seems to need this enabled for better response. I decided to enable the edges as well. Turned it to full squeeze. Do not wish the assistant but it seems that disabling it, and the rest really upsets touch screen.

Ehm, AOD is just a additional option that is included so you can check the clock and whatnot without the need of turning on your screen.
The touch response in the screen is controlled at the kernel driver level and is only affected (in a negative way) by yourself and your fingers and how dirty the screen is.

I might be the only one but I disabled aod with no ill effect that I am aware of. I don't care for it.
Also, enabling the up-down arrows on wifi-data is a simple mod.
aod affects pick up wake, double tap wake. touch responsesivness is very finicky as is, worse with aod off.

You are just experiencing some placebo side effects, mate. AOD have NOTHING to do with the screen sensitivity.
The screen- and touch response is controlled at the kernel driver level. Not at software/application(s) level.

My issue was this, if I left the phone idle and untouched for awhile and then came to it and double tapped the screen, it would not wake up. I would have to use the side button to open. Sometimes the action of lifting would allow the double tap to work, but inconsistant. Doing the squeeze for the assistant was inconsistant as well.
The touch screen acts inconsistantly. If you do a horizontal movement, it interferes with a vertical swipe, I mean things seem to get canceled out. I have to initiate action multiple times to win.
heres the deal, i do not give a flying bleep whether its a hardware or software issue, I would like smart answers that give a solution, not assign a blame or fault. Or tell me I am somehow misinterpreting what I percieved.
So here is my take. The dam phone is overloaded with redundant crap, that steps on each other, interfering with it self. IMO everything in this phone should be disabled at purchase. The consumer should then enable those things it wants! Possibly eliminating over extended, overlapping services and hardware.
Now I say this because it appears that in fact to much was being asked of the phone and it was flipping out basically.
I dumped some google software, pretty much what it would let me.
I disabled the screen saver function, my belief is this was why i would not wake up. Screen saver or no, it times out going to the aod clock display, which I like. Now the phone responds to a lift and double tap everytime......................................................................................
I was using a single home screen, with the android p launcher sidebar. My issue was using swipes to navigate web sites, read stuff, sift thru pages. The swipes were not responding properly, PITA. It seems that by using a single home screen, it stilts the screen edge, makes a dead zone, interferes. Not to mention the right side slider swipe icon is useless as presented. It seems that enabling a 2nd home screen helps with that dead zone. Its not 100% when swiping thru pages but response has gotten more tolerable.

Each and every phone has at minimum, 3 different forms of active data harvesting going on. manufacturers, carriers, media apps. The greatest performance killer of all, not to mention...........................................I have come to despise predictive search algos, targeted marketing adds, basically digital junk mail inundation.
So,
Been using the pix 2 awhile now. Really hated Oreo so I went into beta play to get pistachio. Used ver 3, now 4.
I really liked the initial ver 3 update cuz it removed so much bloat from carrier crap. Less google crap too it seems.
Now I like the responsiveness much better with ver 4. I still have everything I can disabled, disabled or removed. No AOD, active edges, tap to life, no music, movies, tv. No auto pay, auto track, auto search, google talk, nada.
Its a com device, an internet search device, thats it! Bat life is good, real good.
These devices are overburdened with non-sensical, redundancies, that create huge performance impacts. Seriously, how many ways are there to access a smartphone, on all at once.
Now I lift the phone, touch the physical button and walla, works every dam time.
Yep, flexible to meet millions of users needs...
