lost in root process - Thunderbolt General

on tb auto root when i get to the step of pressig 1 it responds that "ADB is not a vlid internal or external......" what does adb have to do with auto root? please help me root my device.... thanx for every ones help, ~Dave

you would get better help if you posted in the right section

Did you turn on the usb debugging option on tb?

Using the method in the link below, NOT the auto root, would be your best bet. It is mainly copy/paste once you have adb installed, and there is a simle adb installer included there i belive.

You do not NEED to have your phone connected to your computer any more as long as you have the right programs on your phone. If you use z4Mod to root your phone, download the application Superuser to give applications SU permissions, install ROM Manager, and then use Root Explorer to move the files into their necessary locations and then use Terminal Emulator to execute the commands.
I have rooted, installed ROM Manager, backed up my ROM, installed the kernel in this thread all without knowing what ADB is.
All applications are available in the Market
z4Mod
Superuser
ROM Manager
Root Explorer ($4)
Terminal Emulator

I dident use adb to get it working. Found it faster to use root explorer to place files and then change permissions of the files on system and SD.
Then use terminal to run the command

Why does this need another thread.. ?? You already have all the resources in the previous thread you made, which people actively responded to. Certainly you could post any follow up questions there..

1 of the topics was cause I didn't understand adb at all. This one was cause I couldn't find adb in the android sdk.but now I got it all worked out and things are running smooth with pick_n_pack, voodoo 5 and cwm and getting 1800 on quadrant now...all hail xda community!

my S wont turn off

so im a previous iphone user and need something new to play with......i follow the instructions to root with visionary but my S is always on and wont be S-off.......what do i do?
Visionary can not perform S-OFF. People tried to come up with 1-click app to do that but it's not possible, at least right now.
Follow this guide to make it happen. It's not as hard as it looks.

I've tried all methods and nothing seems to be working. Any suggestions? If you need more info just ask, but like i said, i've tried like three different ways and none work. I'll edit this post soon and add what common errors im getting
I couldnt get it done with Visionary r14, instead of getting the option screen when I opened it, it went straight to the rooting phone screen and just didnt work
I found r11 and used it instead and that solved my problem, the rest of the process went easy

I had the same problem. I used one way to turn S-off when I had the myTouch 4g with the radio 0.85.xxxx. When I had my phone swapped since I made up an excuse to get the good screen, the radio was 0.86.xxxx. I tried to follow the same steps as I did with 0.85.xxxx, but wouldn't work. So I ended up trying the ULTIMATE GUIDE TO ROOT and it worked. I put everything unlocked even SIM. THen I used VISIONary r14 to have it root then perm root.

Seriously people, don't you read threads? The rooting method is very easy and does not require ADB or the SDK. I've rooted *5 PHONES* on the first try by reading and just following the damn directions.
You temproot, run a couple of commands in terminal, reboot, temproot, permroot, and go on your merry way.
If this doesn't work follow the guide for gfree and that will do it.
Here, I made a SUPER-STEP-BY-STEP guide. If this is still too complicated for you then you really shouldn't be rooting at all, as it requires some basic knowledge of how to use a computer and the phone. And I mean BASIC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
This one is pretty damn easy, takes all of 10 minutes. Use the Terminal Emulator method.
Read the first post all the way through before you start to make sure you understand the entire process. In a nutshell, here's what happens:
*Download root.rar and extract to be a folder called ROOT on your sdcard. The ROOT folder should not be inside any other folders, so it will be sdcard/root.
*Download a file manager from the Market. Linda File Manager is my favorite.
*Download Terminal Emulator from the Market.
*Download the Visionary.apk file from the link in thread.
*from home screen - MENU, SETTINGS, APPLICATIONS, ALLOW INSTALL OF NON-MARKET APPS. Make sure the box is checked. ALSO UNCHECK FAST BOOT.
*Open linda file manager, navigate to visionary and click on it to install.
*Reboot. This will take a minute.
*Open visionary, check the box for SET SYSTEM R/W AFTER ROOT.
*Hit button for TEMP ROOT. Give it a minute.
*Open Terminal Emulator and type THE ITALIC COMMANDS, pressing ENTER after each.
su
*You should get a prompt for SUPERUSER PERMISSIONS. Click ALLOW. Back in Terminal, continue with these commands, typing them EXACTLY as they appear and pressing ENTER after each line.
cd sdcard/root
sh root.sh
*Now just wait a few minutes.
*When it's done, shut down the phone.
*Hold volume down + power until you get to a white screen. If it says S-OFF near the top then you're almost done. If not, repeat the previous steps until you do see S-OFF.
*Reboot.
*Open visionary, make sure SET SYSTEM R/W AFTER ROOT is checked.
*Click TEMP ROOT.
*When done, click ATTEMPT PERM ROOT. This might take a few minutes. Your phone will reboot itself when done. (I think)
When you boot back up you should be permanently rooted and you are ready to install a custom ROM if you like.
*To verify that you are rooted, open Terminal Emulator and type su. If you get the # sign and a notice that superuser permissions were granted, then you have succeeded in rooting your phone. Congrats!
Installing a custom ROM is another procedure so do a search for the guides on those procedures.

Assuming you're doing it correctly, some phones have trouble. Look for the guide titled ULTIMATE S-OFF, CHECK OUT EVEN IF ALREADY ROOTED.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
The gfree method should do the trick.
I got it working after 4 hours -__- I'm not sure if it had anything to do with it, but once i removed the sim card it seemed to work. Got s-off and permroot and even flashed cm7 nightlies afterwards with no problems, then put the sim back i n

I need help with roms

I cannot flash roms or kernel. It won't boot recovery!!! I have stock rooted shift. How do I make a custom recovery? And install roms and kernel
Probably the easiest way is to download ROM manager from the market. The first option in the app is flash clockworkmod. Very fast and automagic. Have fun! Happy flashing.
I have that and kernel manager. Flashed it twice after it didn't work the first time. It hangs up on the HTC boot logo after I try to boot recovery
turn off your phone
power it on while holding vol down.
does the first line say S-OFF or S-ON?
S on I didn't do nand
I've tried a few more things. I used visionary to root my phone. Was that the wrong thing? It all works. But I can't flash. Lol

Alright!! Thank you all who have been helping. I have only a few more questions because I'm a little slow ^_^ ok, first. From the emulator I typed Su and gave permission.... now what? I looked for the commands in development and couldn't find. I'm trying to turn s off. I don't care so much about perm or temp root right now as long as I get that annoying s on to be s off. Lmao. I need commands please!!! Assume I have no access to a computer!
Check out the development subforum. It's a sticky thread by bcnice20.

Alright I have that, now its not explained there but in order to do that via the terminal do I need to dl the framework and sdk to my phone? I do not have a running computer right now. I had a crap amd system which is officially dead. It's now all spare parts. So doing the shell on a computer isn't going to work for me :/ yes, I'm difficult. Lol

the commands given in that thread is the exact ones you would need, but since you're using a terminal emulator in your phone, you don't need adb.
do step 1
skip step 2
do step 3,4,5 via your terminal
do step 6
extra points:
once you're perma-rooted, you can go straight to installing Rom Manager, and flash clockworkrom that way.
then reboot your phone to recovery, and do a nandroid backup.
once that's done, you're all set.
Thank you dude!!!!!!! That rocks!!! I'm at work and I'm doing it right now. This is way more important than work ^_^ anyone else addicted to Android?

When the perm root method was finally developed I was at work with no access to a PC. I ended up rooting via phone terminal just because I couldn't bear to wait a couple hours until I got home.
^ Shift Faced
Could someone explain step 1 and 3 for me if I'm using android terminal emulator. I tried it but nothing happened. My device is temprooted. I download the file into the download folder. I use root explorer to extract it... where?? I tried a couple places even the root folder (Its not in SD card) then once its good how do I check the md5 from the terminal. I type Su to get permission then what? The string in the post doesn't seem to do anything no matter how I type it. Or maybe I just don't know the command. I'm fairly new to this kinda thing. :/
That's awesome. I'm feeling the same way. I don't want to wait for a computer it might be a few weeks I'm impatient now lol
Wait, I got part of it. I just need to know how to save the file to the root of the SD card and then how to check the md5sum. Once I know that I'm good to go

[Q] how to update rooted Xoom to 3.1 or 3.2

dears,
i have rooted 3G Xoom (MZ601).. 3.0.1
now i want to update it to 3.1 or 3.2
and i want to activate the US market ..
please, any one can guide me to do it ..
Simplest way i know.
1. Relock your zoom and go back to stock:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/xo...stboot-official-system-images.html#post708799
2. Update through the system update on your xoom.
3. Once you get up to 3.2 unlock and reroot your xoom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170760
+ this way now you can reset it back to stock completely if you ever need too. Step by step guides are very easy to follow. Mostly copy and paste commands into notepad if your lazy like me. The whole process takes maybe 20 minutes.

If you don't already have ClockworkMod recovery v3.2.0.0 R4c installed, pay attention to post #7.
Good luck!
incase you dont have sdk installed put all files in a folder on your C:/ directory with a name you can find. Youll need these in addition to be able to use adb on your computer File name: SDK ADB.zip File size: 359.93 KB put them all in a folder called rootxoom or something.

His Xoom is 3G there is no OTA update to 3.2 for 3G.
I really would not relock and go back to stock. He's rooted and that's more than half the battle.

adb devices returns no devices
I have followed the tutorial after reading through it several time to unlock and root stock xoom 3.2. when i get to the adb devices command it returns me to the prompt with no devices returned or shown. i have android sdk windows in root of C:. i have rootboot.img, superuser.apk & su binary in a xoom folder in my downloads folder. i open the cmd in the download folder wherein resides rootboot.img, superuser.apk & su binary and type adb devices and nothing. i can see the xoom in explorer so i assume the usb drivers are there. i do have a yellow flag in other devices in device manager-other devices that says MZ604. but i can find no drivers anywhere for it though i have scoured the web for 2 days. i am at a loss as i have tried to perform this root for 2 days using all of my adb noob skills, but have had no luck as of yet. any suggestions? win7, stock xoom 3.2 wifi, pretty computer savvy except for adb
Thanks for any help as i only have 4 days of return left in case of brickage, which i am not so sure i would do inasmuch as it would be my fault...

Make sure USB Debugging is checked under Settings/Applications/Development. If it is checked, then there is something wrong with your drivers.

Hi ,
I think you can go directly from 3.01 to 3.2 using this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183416
If you don't already have ClockworkMod recovery v3.2.0.0 R4c installed, pay attention to post #7.
Good luck!

I'd like to do the same as OP, update a rooted stock 3.0.1 euro 3G to 3.2 - I've already come across the thread you link to, but there's something I don't get.
pienut (user whose post you linked to) is saying that he went from 3.0.1 to 3.2, but in step 3 he writes:
Step 3 - Install 3.2 EURO rom:
Just copied the Euro 3.2 update from this post to my SD Card and flashed it from recovery.
Just to be sure, I did a full wipe after flashing.

Am I missing something, or is the SD card not disabled in 3.0.1? I know it is for me, afaik it only started working with 3.1 and up. I can't wrap my mind around going from 3.0.1 -> 3.2 using the SD card method, and yet it's mentioned in quite a few more threads and posts.
Ideally, I'd like to update to the Xoom ROM 2.1 Hammerhead (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203635), but in those instructions, too, step 2 says
Download the 2.1 rom zip file and place it on your external sdcard

How, if I can't access it in the first place? Should I install 3.1 first before I install Hammerhead? If so, do you know about any step-by-step I can follow?
Sorry to jump in on this thread like this... it was the closest I could find related to my problem after hours of searching and reading. Thanks.
Alright, I figured it out on my own... I took a leap of faith and installed the ClockworkMod Recovery 3.2.0.0 (R4c), booted to recovery, and in there it's possible to mount the SD card under mounts and storage > mount usb storage. It will then appear in Windows as an external drive (as usual).
Yay, learned something new today. Now on to the next battle

Bumped D855 last night.
Anyone else having a issue mounting SD card in TWRP? I have a Samsung 64gb evo just wondering.
is MTP mode .. "Download" mode ?
& will there likely be an easier streamlined way to do this in the future or are those ADB commands & all that likely to stay the way..
Anyone else pumped for some rom baking? I can't wait to get some stock android
I need a video know how.....I don't understand how to do it.....

Looking at some of the other threads, it seems you card is probably formated as exFAT and it needs to be Fat32. Read more here: http://teamw.in/exFAT

As long as you can get the file to the root of the sdcard (I simply plugged my phone into the computer and moved the file over using Windows Explorer), you can use a terminal program. If you are following the direction in the bump thread, you won't start adp. Just issue the three commands starting with "SU" and then the two other commands follow (one at a time).
Works just fine.
Thank you for your hard work!! !!!!!!

I'm just trying to think of how to do it all without cording into my computer..
so if I download the file.. move it to the root of the sd with a file explorer..
fire up the terminal emulator & do those commands starting with SU
I should be all good in the hood ?

I have been rooting and custom romming sense my first smart phone. You guys rock. Thank you!
so I rooted my phone using TowelRoot. Based on the thread, the unlock bootloader process will factory reset the phone if it isn't root using Stump Root. So can I just apply Stump Root on top of my rooted phone before unlock to avoid factory reset?
Use flashify and be done with it that is unless you want to do the adb thing

what thread?
the OP says it must be Rooted. this is so ADB SHELL can gain access to the System partitions.
PS ( after you connect to adb make sure you grant root access to SHELL) (should pop up on your phone)
I'm pretty sure i used towel root to ease your fears.
when you use the last adb command you should see some feed back about moving some data... "lots of bytes" moved to here in XXX amount of seconds thats how you know it worked.

You are right. I misread it. Thanks.
I saw someone else mention flashify.
Anyone tried it & sure it works?
Also I'm considering trying terminal emulator. 1 person said it should work.
Any other opinions?
Worried I'll do it & have a problem haha.
Flashify would be great too if it worked.
Anybody actually tried either?
