[Q] 3.2 with Katana. No USB stick mounting - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Upgraded to 3.2, installed Katana, no USB OTG recognition, then installed USB watcher OTG. Now it sees the drive, says it's mounted but nothing shows in Root Explorer? Any ideas?

Where did you choose to mount it? You have to choose. I chose "mount at next available mount point," and I found it at external2.

It didn't give me that option, and it wouldn't use any other point, but after I went and created a few directories within /mnt like USB1, usb2 ect now it works. Thanks for giving me the idea.

Thank you guys
This thread saved me. I upgraded to rooted 3.2 with Tiamat kernel 2.0.0
Its great but I noticed it no longer had usbOTG support. I tried everything I could think of and was a no go. I thought I was gonna have to restore my ROM manager backup of rooted 3.1 but then I came across this thread.
Learned about USB watcher OTG and works like a charm. I love that I can also mount it to my own custom folders and I can now UNMOUNT. Such a needed feature.
Thanks guys !!!

Accessing Usb thumb drive.

I have been working my way thru several posts tonight but still can not access my thumb drive.
Wifi xoom running tiamat rom. Official Motorola camera connection cable. Sandisk cruzer USB thumb drive formatted to fat32.
I have a folder labeled usbotg on the xoom (not on the sdcard) but nothing shows. Whati step am I missing?
can you show us the outcome of "df" on your xoom?

Did you download the latest version of the USB Mass Storage Watcher app from the market? Also, I have found that when I insert a usb drive, I usually have to reboot to see it in the /usbOTG folder.
qwerp - "df" ? Is that an adb command? if so I assume I need run it after I have inserted the USB?
okantomi - Yes I installed it, but it does not see that I have plugged in a thumb drive.
A little more info - my USB mouse works without a problem - The light on USB/USBs flash and then does become solid.

df is the command you run in the terminal to see devices mounted on your drive.
if you are running the latest tiamat kernel, you do not need the USB watcher.
you see something like
/mnt/usbOTG 1G 1G xxxxxxx
also, can you do a "ls" under /dev/block/ ?

I'm not sure if its a power problem or the unusual way the built-in Sandisk software mounts the drive (it mounts as a "cd drive" in Windows); but Sandisks are problematic.
If you can, please try another thumb drive just to be sure. Preferably, one with no lights (to minimize power requirements) and not a Sandisk or Kingston, which both use proprietary built-in software upon insertion into PC usb ports.
Try downloading an app call USB Mass Storage. Its not in market but I found the thread. Hope it helps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068999
Try flashing the kernel in that thread through recovery. Make sure you flash the correct images first.
When I run "df" in terminal i get/data/media/extrenal and /mnt/sdcard.
I am going to flash the tiamet kernal seperate from the rom and see if that fixes things.
Might be obvious to everyone else but when I first plugged a drive in I noticed two folders called usbOTG, one in the root and one in /mnt/usbOTG. The one in the root is always empty and the one in /mnt is the one I need to access. Again, not sure if relevant but just thought I'd share

I just looked at my Xoom's file system again, and actually, the relevant usbOTG folder is on the root. It's on the same directory level as the internal sdcard that contains all of your apps. There is also a mnt/ folder that contains the external sdcard as well as another usbOTG folder (among other things), but that one is empty.
I apologize for having given a wrong location for the usbOTG in the past. I was being lazy.
Edit: I don't know, it's possible that your file system may show usbOTG at a different location, but I just checked again, and mine is on the root. Also can completely hot-swap, no reboot needed. (That's for fat32.)

Did you reboot while the drive is connected? And of course, are you using a tested usbOTG cable?
Had you been able to connect/use the drives on HC3.1?

I tried to reboot with stick connected , but nothing !
I received the cable yesterday ... after the update to 3.2 , so i don't know if the USB stick works with 3.1.
mmmmmh... about the "tested cable" ... mine is not a cable but an adaptor ... and i hope it works
i can't get mine to work either. Using the same things you are. I have the official motorola cable for it. Never rooted in 3.1, didn't root til 3.2, so no idea if it would have worked then. I am wondering if it is the kernel that is causing this issue. Cause i have seen others post of the same problems with this kernel... Relly wanted this to be working. Go into the hospital thursday for surgery, be in there a week. Wanted to be able to load files off thumb and portable HDs to watch movies on. Can't do either now
Working Now
I initially had the same issue with my USB drive. I then pulled the usb drive out of my "official Motorola OTG cable" then plugged it back in and it now works well. Backed up by SD card to my USB drive . . . no problem.

If you can update to the new Tiamat Manta Ray rom you will be guaranteed to have usbOTG function with the free USB Mass Storage Watcher OTG app. It's now working like a charm with the Motorola OTG "camera kit" adapter.

Yes! You need an OTG cable, such as the Motorola Camera Connection Kit. There are others available for less money, but you have to make sure it's really OTG, because it has a different pin configuration.
In addition, you may need to use one of two free apps to help mount the drive--USB Mass Storage Watcher OTG, or Drive Mount.
I've found that it may help to reboot with the drive plugged in (at least the first time).
With this set-up you can use a thumb drive or a large HDD.
My Xoom is fine but my friend bought one and he cant otg with 3.2 unless he roots, right? ... The toshiba does otg out of the box. This was his major buying point. Anyone know why xoom m doesnt yet others will? And yes, he has otg cable.

I tried both of them n failed in both
The drive mount requires busybody. But after installed it, the drive mount apps keep DC.. couldn't use at all
And for the USB mass watcher, when i launch it it asked me to download the latest version, but the latest version isn't compatible with 3.2
What should i do now =(

I'm not certain if an unrooted Xoom can really access OTG/usb host mode. People say that, but I have been rooted from the start, so I never tested it out.
But i can't even download it from market @@

Does it dim or does it crash? If it dims and you can't do anything, try turning the Xoom (like from landscape to portrait), with auto-rotate enable, and if a dialog box opens, choose an action.
If it is crashing, can you try an HDD like a Passport?
not dim nor crash. The device just suddenly go black n have to boot up

[Q] USB OTG on 4.4.4

Okay - I had USB OTG working *before* the 4.4.4 update by enabling it via the QualcommSettings app and installing StickMount. I'm rooted and have an unlocked bootloader.
After upgrading to 4.4.4, I can't get my Meenova usb stick to mount. I've tried with & without StickMount. I re-enabled "USB Mass Storage" in QualcommSettings, but it doesn't seem to stay enabled.
StickMount says it mounts the device to /sdcard/usbStorage/sda, but when I navigate there with ES File Explorer, the folder is empty.
Has anyone gotten USB OTG to work with 4.4.4? If so, how? Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!!

With Explorer/Root Explorer it is storage/usbdisk. But unrooted as I am, I cannot write a file to the root of the card, a folder is OK.
The not writing to the root of the OTG/card is some bug in Explorer. Solid explorer works fine.
I'm rooted and have an unlocked bootloader. 4.4.4 Now otg works fine for me wothout stickmount. usb drive mount /mnt/media_rw

Uninstalled StickMount and tried it again yesterday, and it's working fine now. The other day, I had looked at storage/usbdisk also, but the folder was empty. I'm not sure what I changed to get it working, so unfortunately can't help anyone if they're seeing the same behavior I was.

ES used to (on 4.4.4)
I did notice that my Thermal Seek camera (also USB OTG) works fine with Lollipop, so I guess ES has to be updated.
Yes, I forgot about ES. It does open it. I had been using solid because I like it better but I also forgot that stock Android is NOT AOSP and that was my problem. It does see it now with ES so, problem solved. Also it reads both fat32 and NTFS. too bad it doesn't read exFAT

That is so strange - I use ES and I am not able to get it to recognize my USB flash drive! Sheeeeeeesh! :crying:
Well we are all seeing strange things with 5.0 For example, root is not working as it should, apps like App Quarantine can't seem to properly disable some system apps or Google Apps, I can't seem to be able to correctly install a recovery and most apps that should allow to do reboot options (like flashify or twrp manager) don't work. My guess is that we'll have to wait a few days until development has matured a bit..
Then, I can use/see/write my USB by otg only with Es explorer without stickmount or I have to use stick mount mandatorily ?
sorry if you give the answer already but did not understand English very well
Always i used stick mount, but it would only need/use ES Explorer
I can only add that on nexus7 (2013) official 5.0 OTG doesn't work either.
I can access external drive through ES or stickmount, but the system itself is 'blind'.
Using custom kernels (e.g elementalX) built for lollipop which in theory should support OTG break stickmount (and still no OTG support, possibly something in OS beyond the kernel) - internal memory is not mounted anymore to /storage/sdcard0. ES still works though.

Yes, you can just use ES Explorer to use USB OTG devices. No need for stickmount.
Update your drivers.

Yes in 5.0.
I have the google stock image, rooted with CFAR and all I use is ES Explorer to see my USB OTG. You have to be in either NTFS or Fat32 for it to read the drives.
It does show as a USB 1002 like you say and if you click on it it will open a new window with the contents of the drive. That's all I do.
No tweaks or apps to mount the drives.

Hi all,
I can see on ES Explorer the US1002 tab like you, and if I click on it, I can see the file inside the USB storage, but i can't put other files on the drive, even if I try to create a new file, the app show up a pop up with the message "unsupported operation", instead the copy from the USB drive to the phone is possibile.
This happens since I flashed the Stock Lollipop build.....
Have you tried to copy or create a file on the drive?
Many Thanks! Bye!

Probably kernel related. Might need to export to usb otg properly. Probably mounted with no permissions. You can check when OTG is plugged in by typing the "mount" command into a terminal emulator
