Can I change the name of my nandroid backups?
I want to keep a few but have a hard time remembering what they are when they are displayed as a date only. I do not know enough about clockworkmod to know whether I can change the names of my backups or not .

Yes you can change the name. Go into RomManager. Then go into Manage and Restore Backups. Choose the one you want to change and long press on it and let off. It will then give you choices, Restore-Rename-Delete. Just choose Rename. A bubble will pop up with the name highlighted. Tap and rename. They are displayed year/month/day/time . Hope that helps .
or just go into a file explorer like root explorer
got to /Sdcard>Clockworkmod>Backup>And then rename it
should work
Great thanks. I was just worried the recovery was expecting the name format to be specific or something and that changing it would bork my recoveries.

word of advice, when renaming it, do not put spaces in the folder name or else you'll get an error when trying to restore it.

noob question i know however just a quick one,
can you rename nandroid backup folders with messing up md5sum ?
i load a ton of roms on the regular [a junkie i know] basis and get flustered when i have tons of backups but they are all dated
great question i also would like to know never had the balls to try cuz it says something about messing it up i know in rom manager u can under manage and restore (i think) also rom manager doesnt see ur cwm backups i usually go through ando zip but yea id def like to kno

I don't know if you can rename the folders themselves, but you CAN rename the backup file itself. I use Root Explorer to do this. Just make sure you don't put any spaces in the new file name. You can use dashes and underscores to separate words and numbers, though.
Someone in the past said you can download mand5 to generate a new md5 sum, but I haven't tried it.
@visedmonk do u think andro zip will work it says it will let me rename then i click on that and it says change to file extension can make file unusable and i dont space any letters for instance il put cm for (cyanogenmod) rite next to the numbers havent had the balls to try it

I dunno. I've never used andro zip. Only one way to find out...
But seriously, it should work. To be safe, though, make a copy of the file you want to rename and place the copy with the unaltered name on your computer or sd card or whatever. Then you can rename the file and see if it works. If it does, great. If it doesn't, you still have the backup you need.

Don't know if you're using "nandroid" generically to refer to both the true nandroid as well as CWM but I rename CWM backup folders all the time and have never had trouble restoring them. I've done it from ROM Manager, via a file manager and also via ADB.

im talking about the folder not the actual files in the folder.
i just want to organize my roms so i can always jump between each
@suprah name it like this ex, 2011-06-16.05.57.13.....
you want...2011-06-16.05.57.13gingerbread ? rite well when i try that in andro zip it sayin it will make file unusable.... n i guess i will have to try and i always used to use rom manager and just go to manage and restore backups but its different with this phone especially cuz rom mana doesnt see cwm i guess?

alright welp as long as you rename the folder without any spaces, then there would be no problem with restoring nandroid backups

I renamed the folder once and couldn't restore. It was making a reference to the md5 file.
What I did to fix the backup is rename the folder again but this time without spaces and then it let me restore without any problems.
Now my Nandrioids are all organized

the stock rooted nandroid restore that's posted in the dev section is renamed to LG-P999-V10f. it's not the typical date format. and alot of people have used it. so the answer is ....yes.

Could be there's a coding error in the recovery code and stops parsing the directory name when it hits a space. The md5 file only references the individual files not the directory.
In general it's better to stay away from spaces in file and directory names. Back in the early days of *nix spaces were verboten and there are still some vestigial issues lurking either in the code or in the coding habits of some people. It's rare but it does happen. Hyphens, underscores, periods are all OK though.

If after you rename the folder you get an md5 error. This http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714114 can help you fix it.
BE SURE AND READ THAT POST COMPLETELY
It's imperative that one not generate an md5 sum for a nandroid that is actually corrupted. That will wreak all kinds of havoc on your system.
ONLY PERFORM THE ABOVE IF YOU KNOW ITS NOT RESTORING DUE TO A NAME CHANGE
EDIT: For the record, the above commands can be performed from terminal emulator if you know what bits to leave out. Saved me a few steps.
I rename all of my nandroid backups. They are easy to get confused otherwise. The only thing I change is the year in the date, and leave the month/day alone.

Yea I downloaded the Stock Nandroid and loaded it. I renamed the folder and got a MD5 error. Now I'm not sure it if was because of the rename or because it was a bad download to begin with.
I think I still have the file on my pc and possibly find the MD5 checksum before copying it over this time.

I finally rooted TF and flashed Revolution HD. I understand that ROM Manager does not work with the TF. I want to be able to change backup names w/o messing up md5. Is there method or app for this?
go into file manager and change the name of the .zip
What zip? I have the CWM backup folder with sub folders for each backup and the 4 nandroid files in each.

Actually it looks like I can change the folder name for the Nan back without problem.
I thought that changing the names of the Nandroid backups would cause a restore to fail....unless the name was reverted back to it's original name.

That's what I feared. Evidently it's OK to change the directory name that contains the files. I tried a restore after and it went fine. Makes sense that the file md5 sum is not affected by chance nging folder name.
Hi, I changed the name of the folder and BAM!!.. the restore failed! I had two backups of two different ROM's and could not restore either of them after name changing! I managed to put back the old names and now both work. But I still need a way to identify so was wondering if there was any way to change the name and yet keep the md5 sum intact!!

Usually a simple name change should still work. If you use symbols and stuffs in the name it might not work.
The latest version of TWRP let you name you nandroid backup.
So what is the best way to back it up?
Please don't tell me to copy and paste it with a file manager
I hate to tell you this. Copy it with a file manager then transfer it to your computer. It's how you do it.
Honestly I've never had success backing up the efs folder. Every time I tried with any file manager it always failed to copy the IMEI.

Use Super Manager. I've restored mine with it before.
tar or cpio -- Using zip or anything related to Windows, especially a text editor, is just asking for trouble.
# cd /efs
# tar cvf /sdcard/my_efs_backup.20120816.tar .
then copy my_efs_backup.20120816.tar off your microSD and put it somewhere safe
Jeff... I'm not a Linux guy more of a Windows guy but am I suppose to put that in the terminal on the phone? And hechoen aren't there folder permissions involved when you put back the file?
I know there are apps that backup your efs but can I use them? Also somewhere in a thread there is a flash able zip that backups your efs, can it work with ics

Yeah and it also seems that its the only file explorer without the bloat. Its pretty expensive for a simple file explorer.
But well worth it
I find adb a lot easier than the terminal on the phone. It's useful for pushing a file or two to the phone or vice versa without unmounting the microSD. Free too!

Any rom that installs with my aroma installer like most gb roms and a few ics roms make an efs backup in /sdcard/aroma-backup for you.
Also any ics rom that has used the cm9 update.sh script team acid made will back it up for you during the rom install (cm9/aokp).
But how about that flash able zip file from cm7 that backs up your efs folder?

The reason I want to back it up is because I want to flash back to stock using heimdall and there are those times that something could go wrong.

Nope. The folder already has the correct permissions. All you need to do is stitch the system to read/write then paste it back in place. I have used this method so I know it works. I do agree with Jeff though. If you know how to use adb it's a sure fire way to go. Just most users are clueless about it.

Lumins guide to using heimdall uses adb right? So can I backup my efs and flash heimdall afterwards correct?

Can you at least please provide the thread that the flash able zip is which is both the efs back up and restore.
Try looking at the url I posted above and see if you can figure out - on your own - how to back in to the folder FB posted both the backup and restore zips.
Is there a downside to renaming a nandroid backup folder to something more descriptive than the date & time of creation? I'd like to have a better idea of what I'm looking at when selecting a backup to use.

Based on my experience, yes there is. If you need a good name then do it at the time of making the backup. I had real problems restoring backups when I changed the name later - it appears that the folder name may well be used in the MD5 checksum creation process.
OK, thanks. I'm new to the whole rooting process, and I don't recall getting the chance to pick a name. I'll look for it the next time I try something out; worst case, that's what "writing things down" is for, right?

I guess it probably depends what you use to make the backup. I use 4ext Recovery Control.

You can rename the folder to whatever you like as long as no spaces are included in the name (this applies to CWM Recovery & others).
HI Im a noob. I was able to root my phone successfully and everything I was downloading rooted apps so I download pimp my beats and Dolby mobile well some how it messed up all my audio I couldn't hear a thing so I tried factory reset and then tired uninstalling them and that didn't work so then I went online and downloaded the original boot and recovery.img I tired flashing the but then when I do it comes to the clockworksmod like if it needs a rom or something then when I try installing a ROM it ends up aborting. it ends up getting stuck on the start up with red lettered warning I need someone to help me please get it back to the original state like when first get it out of the box. I want to install the original kernel the original rom and get my sound back on. Or at least so I can fix it to get my warranty valid again so I can get a new one. I need help asap if additional info is needed let me know. do you have any idea why I cant hear phone calls coming in or outgoing, my music or youtube all sounds i can't hear. I am on K2_PLC_CL I am LTE on CricketWireless Thanks

I know that. I moved the backup on the computer and when I put it on my sd so I could restore it. It didn't work it says no file found do you know where I can download the Original Stock Rom and when i try starting it up it go's to a black screen with a green arrow pointing towards the found then it goes to the phone with a red triangle with a red exclamation point. What is that?
If your backup is not recognised you have put it in the wrong folder i think. So tell us, where the files are on your sd card.

+1 on that, if you have one it'll be recognized as long as it is in the right folder, and made with the same recovery.

So i put the backup in the CWM folder but it tells me no file found so what do I do? Can I go to some website to download the original stock Rom and kernel I need to fix my phone asap so can you please tell me exactly what I need to do. Plus what are those symbols i describe in my last reply. Thanks so much for assisting me I appreciate it.
The files must be in folder: clockworkmod/backup/2013-04-01.18.46.58
The last folder is the date it was created.
The symbols mean, your flash has failed.

So as long as I put it in that file on my SD and open it up in CWM then it should work right?
I already did that once and it didn't work so what do I do then?
what are my other options I really need help thanks for everything you've done so far.
If your backup don't work, i know there is a Stock cricket jb back here in One SV Forum. Others flashed this successfully.
Otherwise i'm running out of ideas.

Okay well can you do me a favor and locate it for me please I'll probably do something wrong like not knowing where to find it. And
Will it work with my phone? And then when you find it can you give me the exact commands I need in order to flash that Stock properly so I know that I didn't mess up I know im asking for a lot but can you please do that. I'd appreciate it thanks.

Okay so what do I do. Do i just move the Nanadroid file and where on my Sd. I leave it in zip form right ?
Then using fastboot I go ahead and open up CWM? Will it work on any version of CWD? Thanks so much for getting that file for me and what do I do after its flashed? Like as from being to end what are the steps sorry for all the questions but thanks for everything.
Unzip it. Go into Clean JB Crkt 2.04.1050.3 folder and copy the clockworkmod to your external sd.
Then boot into cwm and choose restore and choose the backup.

Hey man I download that file but its not in zip its in Rar. so I just move the file on to my external sd out in the open not in a folder and I opened up my CWM from the install zip from sd card and that didn't work then I went to restore and it could find the file both times so how do I install it? Do I have to put it in a certain folder or something? It keeps saying no file found. Thanks
Don't copy the zip directly.
What you could do is make a backup, see where it is on your sd, replace it with the one from the zip and then restore that one.

Thanks for that. But I have a question is it exactly like the original one because I want it to be with the original stock so that i can re-lock my Bootloader and stuff? Is there some way to get that Rar. file to install on my phone? Sorry if im getting you angry or upset. Thanks for all your help

Yea but what im trying to say is that the file I downloaded isn't in zip form. So how am I supposed to install it on CWM?
Sorry but what is so difficult to understand? The rar is not for flashing, its a cwm backup and if you unrar it you have a folder Clean JB Crkt 2.04.1050.3, inside you find a folder clockworkmod.
This clockworkmod folder you have to copy to SD, like it is and and boot into recovery and choose "restore".
And my zip is made from this backup, so it are the same files!
