[Q] Replacing system files on rooted device - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to replace the Effect_Tick.ogg file in the system/media/audio/ui directory but I'm not entirely sure how. Is it impossible to do through the tablet itself (using the file file manager or root explorer)? When I try I'm getting a permission warning, but I thought the entire point of rooting was to get root access.

In root manager, and on the top right, and press mount r/w then replace it.

I find the easiest way to replace files on the /system partition is with adb.
Just type -
adb remount
adb push Effect_Tick.ogg /system/media/audio/ui/Effect_Tick.ogg
This is assuming that you are starting from the folder where your replacement Effect_Tick.ogg is located and that it is named the same think.

obviously thats only useful if you have a computer and usb cable

True enough. But if I'm crafty enough to make my own .ogg files, I'm probably not doing it on a tablet.

load boot animations without being in recovery(must be rooted)

I was messing around with root explorer and noticed that i was able to delete my boot animation with it when i was mounted as R/W so i thought i would try to copy one and it also works... so no need to push with adb shell.. here are the steps
1. take the boot animation make sure it is named bootanimation.zip and copy it to your SD card
2. then open root explore and mount R/W and then navigate to the file and press on file till the menu comes up and select copy
3. then navigate to data/local and paste the file in the local directory
and you are done, this can be done with the android_audio.mp3 file as well just paste it to the same place.
just thought this would make it easier for people instead of using adb shell
credit goes to yojoe600
Exactly what I was looking for, I'll give it a try, thanks.
The Animation worked but the Audio didn't, do you also need to put the Audio in a zip file?
I didn't think that you needed root to access /data/
So in that case, would need Root Explorer? Wouldn't any file manager do?
Yeah, you dont need root access at all for this.
just adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local/

need to look at the text file in your bootanimations.zip and add the words android to the front of the text in that file

[Q] Getting rid of Fota File

Hello guys,
I been trying in the little time I have to get rid of Fota file by using ADB but have not successfully been able to delete those files. I am not quite sure what is the process to do it but this is what I have been trying.
Open CMD
1- go to platform-tools folder on CMD
2- Type adb push c:\directory\fota_delta_dp1\ \data\fota\
3- repeat for second fota file.
It says that failed to copy c:\directory\file\ \data\fota\ since is read-only
How do I make it "writable" or what am I doing wrong,
I wanted to mention as well that my phone is rooted.
Find Root Explorer. Install it.
Change the file system to R/W.
Then, navigate to \data\fota and delete the files.

However you want to get root shell and do:
# cat /dev/null > /data/fota/fota_delta_dp1
# cat /dev/null > /data/fota/fota_delta_dp2
Well thank you for your advises. I ended up using "Super Manager" checked in setting "Use root function" went to the folder were i had the files alreadt unzipped and copy them over to /data/fota which replacea both of the fota files. Rebooted the phone and had 280mb of available storage.
When i get home i'll make a tutorial using Super Manager.

After rooting, I cant replace my bootanimation.zip file, says permission denied

Is there something I need to do once rooted to be able to copy this over?
How are you doing it? If you're using say Root explorer you need to Mount Read/Write.
You can ADB push the file or you can simply put the bootanimation.zip in data/local
I just realized the file program I used wasnt asking for root access...I downloaded root explorer and it did ask for permission.
So I was able to get it done.

Attached Google Talk files that worked for me (from TouchWiz 1.0.2 ROM). Put the lib file into /system/lib and the apk into /system/app. Change perms to 744.

I am trying to follow these instructions however I can not find the /system/lib and /system/app folders. The Google Talk stock app vanished when I flashed TCP's rom on the phone, so I am trying to reinstall it this way, since it is not on the market.
Where are these files usually located? Do I need to format my files differently or something?
/system/app
/system/lib
ANYTHING that is not /mnt/sdcard (/sdcard) or /ext-sd requires ROOT access and an app that will look at ROOT
ES File explorer or root explorer
you WILL NOT see these folders by just plugging into your computer, nor will you see it with basic file managers

Thanks for the help,
Ok i downloaded ASTRO file manager, but when i try to paste into the app folder it gives me an error message that I have a read only file system...
Make sure you have r/o where it says r/o or r/w. this way you can paste it.

I know I'm VERY! late with this answer, but I have to correct you. With zArchiver (file-explorer and zip/7-zip app) you can access androids system folders. On a S III mini I can copy the ringtones/notification-sounds or the start sound( on the micro-SD-card for example). It is possible to copy other files too, but that didn't make any sense for me. btw: phone is not rooted.
P.S. Also worked on a non-rooted Huawei Y 625 @ Android 4.4.2 . Of course I can not copy files INTO the system folder(s) but read-acces is definitely possible without root permissions.
Greetz HiddenAssassin2306
Access to /data is forbidden in Android unless you have root access.
/system is read only, and limited.
My quote from above did say you wouldn't see any of these from a computer. And the OP was trying to place files in /system, which is read only.
Is there some reason you felt the need to bring up a 3 year old thread to say I'm wrong, when in this thread, regarding the original post, I am 100% correct?

Modify file in /data/data... directory and retain permissions?

Hello,
I have a metronome app which uses .wav files which are stored in a subdirectory of /data/data/[app name]. Android 6.0.1, Oneplus 3.
Now I wanted to modify these wav files with Wavelab and put them back into place (via ES File Explorer in root mode).
That worked, BUT the owner of the files is now "root", and the app won't play the files anymore.
How can I either reset the file owner or prevent the ownership from changing??
Does no one answer because this problem isn't solvable?
Or is it because my question unmasks me as noobish??
Why not copy the wav files to sdcard then modify it?

Hahaha, you obviously don't understand what my problem is (although I think I described it clearly). It's no problem to copy the files elsewhere and modify them; it's when I copy them back into the original directory via root explorer that the file owner gets changed to "root" which makes them inaccessible to the metronome app.

i think you can't do anything about it since its in "/data"
What about manually changing the owner back to the correct value after copying?
No, that isn't possible. Only owner selectable is "root".

Then the limit is in your file manager or root app, just change them
