Sense vs TouchWiz check out videos and reviews of both overlays and also on hardware. DHD is still a good device.

I love my desire HD, but the battery does have issues (non rooted). My wife has the Galaxy S and loves it, battery seems to last forever.
My advice, get the HD and a Powerskinz now that they finaly make them if the battery issue is the dealbreaker.

I've been using an iphone for years now and I sick of IOS and its lack of usefulness IMO.
Anyways I'm looking to switch soon to andriod any suggestions on phones or manufacturers? I have heard from a friend that HTC is the best for rooting is this true? I'd like to root my phone so I dont want to end up with a phone that is locked down.
I am currently looking at the samsung Galaxy S II, Driod Bionic and HTC thunderbolt. Though I hear the driod bionic may not be rootable? Any other suggestions?
I'm open to service providers though I am looking at verizon right now.
Sorry if this has been asked before I tried to search but didnt find anything.
I'm starting to research now so any help would be appreciated and any website suggestions would be awesome too.
Thanks for the help!!
Get samsung galaxy s2 my friend has it and I can tell you its bloody fast i'd say as much as the iphone no laggs between screens animations very nice looking! Even front facing camera.

HTC evo is very good. Anything from HTC for that matter
+1
HTC is the way to go. Samsung is cheaply made.

The galaxy s2 is a nice one on paper, I haven't tried it myself but I believe it would be good. I wasn't a fan of the original galaxy s though, it felt very cheap and the touch screen wasn't as good as the htc's. I used the htc desire and really liked that one, htc makes some brilliant phones, that feel well-built, well programmed and really stand out when you actually use them.
I think either the galaxy s2 or a htc phone would be good, I'm liking the look of the HTC sensation myself. If you're looking for a dual core like those though, I believe it would be best to wait it out for a while and see how the development goes for them.
thanks for all the suggestions how are samsung phones for rooting? or does it all depend on the development community picking up the phones?
no problem at all with rooting, personally i would suggest you'll get a fully customized rom for your phone - these are much faster than the stock firmware and rooted by default...
For google, make the Maps 5 with navigation to be available completely offline, like you can do with OVI Maps in nokia.
Who is the best? My top 4
1. HTC
2. MOTOROLA
3. LG
4. SAMSUNG
I look forward to seeing arguments.lol

My views are
Samsung:
Pros: great screens
Cons: terrible firmware updates
Motorola: not even relevant, they dont do wp7 so they dont matter to me
HTC:
Pros: more customization I guess?
Cons: not innovative, cheap feel, terrible battery life
LG:
pros: nothing really excellent about them... But nothing bad either, they just get by.
I put HTC on top of any lists.

However, I think HTC provides best value android phone.

Who are the most supportive toward custom rom?
HTC beats everyone. I wouldn't dream of getting another brand.

There is no such the "best"
What is best for me may not be fore you
Said that I´ll choose HTC always!
I've got a Galaxy S II, it is the first mobile device I bought for myself. So +1 to SS
The Samsung Transform that i have makes me not like samsung. And true with the late updates. Everyone without the certain device that wont get updated would be on whats after ICS. We'd still be on Honeycomb.

After taking the advice of a few members a year ago to upgrade from hd2 to a dhd (good call BTW) my time has come to upgrade once more.
Question is what to get next ?
I'm a big sense fan and love romming my phones so what should I get ?

I advice you of waiting for Samsung Galaxy Nexus that it's coming out on October 19
Yeah definitely Nexus Prime/Galaxy Nexus... It'll be the first ICS device and the next one in the Nexus Line, so younshould have a pure Google experience and everything will be open.

Guys I am planning to buy a new phone. I want your suggestions about choosing the right one. I am relying on good battery life and phone which has a good amount of development going on (custom roms, kernels, miui, cyanogenmod, ics etc.) coz I love to fiddle with devices a lot. My current choices are :
Samsung galaxy R
Samsung galaxy S plus
HTC Desire S
HTC Incredible S
These are my options but senior members can suggest me phone in range of 23000 INR ($475).
Thanks in advance guys

Isn't Galaxy Nexus coming to India soon? It definitely has those things (though battery life preferred with custom kernel) and is probably of choice (until the new quadcores come out in a few months anyway) for tinkering. But I'm not sure you can get it for $475, unless they offer it more cheaply there. I got mine for $550ish, and that's considered cheap here.

Yup. But $550 is costly for me. Already pushing my limits for my said price range

Umm.. If you look for design and Sense UI, go for HTC. But if you want a performance device then I would suggest Samsung R or S Plus.
Thought for 23k you can even get Optimus 2x or Optimus 3D.
But if your just gonna stick with Samsung and HTC. I would suggest Samsung for the performance. No wonder HTC's Sense UI is far better than any other device out there but its just your decision whether wanna go with Design and Looks or Performance and Built Quality!
have a look at the new Htc series One,
HTC One X, HTC One S and HTC One V
DEFINITELY GALAXY S III!!

2 years ago, I prefer 3.7" phones to 4.3" phones. But now, 3.7" and 4.3" seem too small for me. Just try it first and you'll like it and even want a bigger one. Anyway, the 4.8" screen was rumoured to have a 16:9 aspect ratio.

I see. For that price, you might consider the HTC Sensation. I think the HTC Rezound occasionally gets that low (say with special promotions), but I can't find any at this moment.
I'm not familiar with any of the "cheaper" manufacturers (Huawei or the like) but it might be something to look into.
If your not in a hurry to get a phone. I would suggest you too wait for like till April or May. There are like 20+ phones getting launched by then.
HTC's One series are gonna be available globally by April. Even LG, Samsung, Sony has launched some new phones and they all comes with ICS 4.
So you may wait for sometime and I bet its worth waiting for.

That's actually a good point. Old phones usually take a price dip when their successor comes out. The HTC Rezound is sure to take one when the One X comes out, for instance, similarly for the Samsung Galaxy S2 when the S3 comes out.
So if you can wait, I'm going to speculate that those phones might dip down into your (OP's) price range. (But you should allow for a margin of error ).
If I were you, I would check the forum on what phone has the most development ... That way, you can have a lot of Rom choices hehehe

I'd like to know why too.
I've got my HTC desire for ~two years and never had any problems. + there are a lot of roms for the device.
Among your choices I'd go for the HTC Desire S.
So I though of upgrading my nexus one. The possible candidats are a htc one s or a motorola razr maxx. If you had to choose wich one would you take? I don't like that big screens, so 4.3 inches seems to be a sweat spot for me. Could you recomend me other phones?
Thx
Sent from my Nexus One using xda app-developers app
Razr Maxx has the best battery life out of all smartphones in the market so if you are looking for a phone that has great battery life, the razr maxx is the phone to get. Other good phones are the GNexus and the SGS3 which have full support of Ics and JB.
The best hardware right now is the galaxy s iii. The best software support is on the galaxy nexus.
I wouldn't get something as locked down as the Motorola unless you're okay with only ever getting one android update, and getting it super late. And I think the gsiii does everything the HTC does and then some.
My choice is (and probably always will be) the nexus because I have more control over it than any other device, but the gsiii is a good choice now as well.

At that screen size I'd take the Galaxy s2 or Sony Xperia S or One S in that order
The maxx is good but lack of support kills it. Battery life is the only reason to get it.

galaxy s2 will be the best choice for the range of the screen size & samsung is still continuing to update the software on s2
yea S2 is very nice now and the price is low
a galaxy nexus.
I would buy galaxy nexus.

Did all four of you guys seriously just ignore the fact that he wants a phone with a 4.3 inch screen? Those would be too big for him.
I would have to agree with SII, great development and Samsung supports Cyanogenmod, what more could you ask for? Still has great specs too.

I would realy like that extra battery life on the maxx and it just got the ics update. But are phones with bigger screens like 4.8" in dimensions a lot bigger than that with 4.3"?
Thx to you all

There's too many of these threads all over the place on here now.
None of us can give you a definite answer of what phone to get because ultimately, it's your choice and none of us can change that. And if a you're after is suggestions, why not just think of a few yourself and float round the specific sections for those phones so you can read peoples responses to the phone.
I'll end up making a dedicated thread for this kinda thing if I see too many more of these

It starts getting difficult at 5+ and becomes a matter of taste there. Otherwise 4.8 has proven manageable with phones like sensation and galaxy s3.
Consider that the maxx is not HD and is aged technology, even at launch there were complaints on moto holding out,if you also don't mind this carry on.
Consider you can always get an extended battery for something like the s3 or optimus 4x without a great increase in bulk as they're thin.
