What if anything gets deleted? I'm considering buying a new sdcard for the root as I think you need to format the sdcard beforehand?
I have no computer at the moment so cant back anything up to pc. What does gingerbreak delete? Internal sd?
Cheers all,
Djs

It deletes nothing, Gingerbreak just gives you Root, much like Administrator Privileges rather than a guest account on a computer.

I have spent the afternoon trying to re-root after applying the JH7 update I downloaded from AT&T. It kick the root out of my phone and I have tried everything to root the thing again... Unleash the Beast, the basic root, one click root... all I get is this when I go into recovery and click install packages:....
E:can't open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory) Installation aborted
Help!!!
Problem solved... Interesting though. no matter how many times I tried to copy update.zip to the root of the internal SD card, it wouldn't copy. I mounted my phone, opened the the explorer, dragged and dropped/copied and pasted, the phone won't allow the file to be copied to the internal SD. I then took and copied the file to my external SD, then used ROOT EXPLORER to copy and paste into the root of the internal SD, then went into recover mode, re-install packages and then the file was found and installed. I'm not sure whether this has to do with AT&T's JH7 update or not. When I did update, my phone was no longer rooted and my ability to re-root in the normal fashion was gone. Is this something AT&T has done to try and prevent people from rooting??? I don't know, but now I know the easiest way... Use Root Explorer!!!

if what you say is true, then you will be unable to use your ~14GB of internal storage. I would make sure it is not your pc.
hi all, i have a rooted htc aria running froyo 2.2.ive got a new 16g card coming. i would like to partition. ive read way too much info on doing this, that im now totally confused! i cant figure out what steps this should be done in. ive got everything backed up. im not sure what program to use for the partitioning. have read not to use rom manager. im not sure about how many partitions i should have. after i copy my card contents to pc, where do they go when i copy them back? i just really need someone kind enough to walk me thru this. i have adhd and need specific instructions......thanx

Why do you need to partition buddy? Do you want multiple internal storages, or another reason? I may be able to help here with just a little more info.
i would like to partition the micro card.ive read that its better to have it partitioned?

In some cases, putting a separate partition on your SD card and formatting to etx3 can be beneficial, especially with the Galaxy S devices. In day-to-day use with others phones though, you'll benefit far more from the extra storage than having multiple partitions. Do you have a Galaxy S mate?

I found this for you, from the Aria forum:
To Enable A2SD:
Backup your applications
Backup your sdcard
Partition your sdcard with ROM Manager with an ext partition option. (ROM manager is in Market)
This should start a special mode of clockwork recovery, which will partition the sdcard.
That's the only reason you'd want to partition your card, so that if you're running out of memory you can move some of your apps to the SD card. ROM Manager is very easy to use, but I'll be here if you need me Good luck!

To follow onto this question. 1st time droid user, limited linux knowledge. I am running 2.2 on a brand new optimus t(mobile). I plan on rooting using z4root and flashing ROM (maybe megatron). Sdcard new (unused) only thing I have done with the phone is install a bunch of apps (which I can replace) and load my contact/gmail account.
I notice that my phone indicates 143kb internal available, so I assume I will have space limitations soon. It is my understanding that one of the benefits or rooting and putting on custom rom is the ability to have your phone recognize portions of the sd card as internal memory and, thus, "create" more internal space.
Considering my phone and my desire, can I go through the process of 1) rooting (z4root) 2) backup (custom recovery) 3) flash new rom/kernal 4) dump back up from sdcard onto PC via card reader 5) Use your above method to partition card?
Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated, including partition types/sizes, process, procedure....or just tell me if I am an idiot and am way off base.
Thanks a lot
Hi, im new here so excuse my beginner silly questions >_<. Im trying to recover files that were deleted from galaxy note 2 GT-N7100 INTERNAL STORAGE. when i connect my phone to the computer, it connects as portable media device and i am able to transfer files. however, i want to know whether the phone is accessible as ntfs or fat32 in order to use it on a program to recover files. i also would appreciate recommendations on ways to recover deleted files from the device's INTERNAL STORAGE.
Possibly without the need of rooting if thats not too much to ask =x?
Thanks T_T

I think you should use free software to recovery would be better, it would not distinguish as NTFS or FAT32 format where, but you will have to install it on the PC, the PC should be noted that receiving phone memory okay
You can use a software
EASEUS Data or Recover My files
get it

I'm unable to delete files or create new ones in my internal storage/sd.
I can read files that are already there.
I'm also able to read/write from a PC
It seems that permissions are not set properly for this partition?
I want to add that this happened after I updated my S4 GT-I9500 to 5.0.1 lollipop (don't really know if it matters) then tried to fix permission to be able to write to external SD card .
after searching the forum for a solution and trying different "fixes", this is what the situation is like:
I can only write/delete when I access (/data/media/0) but not( /sdcard) , (/storage/sdcard0) , (/storage/emulated/0) or (/storage/emulated/legacy). I'm sorry if I'm being kinda noob.
thanks

you don't need to fix permissions or anything of that kind. Lollipop already allows 3rd party apps to write on SD card..
If I was you I'd just wipe everything from recovery and reflash with Odin.

The only reson I did the External storage permission fix is because some apps didn't have access to it, but now all apps have access but not to the internal memory.
I know the most obvious solution is to try to reflash a stock Rom, but I don't currently have my laptop, I'll get it back at the end of the week. So I was looking for an actual troubleshooting/fix?? Plus I kinda want to know what went wrong cuz I want to learn xD
Thanks for trying to help anyway.
Okay, so I'm in a lot of pain. I was having some serious trouble with my Samsung s4 and decided to hard reset it thinking my pictures and contacts were on my SD CARD. They weren't. And nothing was backed up to Google or my Verizon cloud. I contacted Verizon. They sent me to Samsung and vice versa. I know my files aren't permanently deleted. The feds could easily recover them you know? Those pictures meant a lot to me. So I desperately did research on how to recover my hard reset contacts and photos.. I downloaded multiple softwares that didn't work and I also came upon rooting my phone. Can someone please help me? Help me root my phone and recover my pictures? I don't want to unlock my bootloader and wipe my phone a second time. I sobbed like a two year old thinking they're gone forever.. :crying: :crying: :crying:

...Because I lost all of my important pictures and contacts.. I read on here that if you root your phone you can retrieve all of those lost files..
Unfortunately I don't think you can. You can retrieve them and everything else if they were on SD card. Where is that thread that you saw?

but it also talks about external memory. "External memory would allow you to use data recovery tools that scan for deleted files and return them to a usable state. These tools work because most operating systems don't go through and set all of those 1's and 0's to just 0's when you delete a file. Usually the operating system will just delete the reference pointer in the index that says that a file exists with such-and-such name and it's located at this position on the hard disk / memory location." Is there no way I can get this stuff back?
You have a Samsung, either your bootloader is unlocked or it isn't, in the case that it is unlocked you could go ahead and root and it probably wouldn't take much effort. Not much else we can tell you about rooting your phone without a model number though.

External Memory is SDCARD what you want is Internal Memory, and it's pretty hard if not impossible to regain the stuff back from Internal Memory.

I did a lot of research and I keep stumbling upon Dr. Fone android recovery.. it's saying it searches internal and external. I'm driving myself up the wall here. Yikes. I wish I were more tech savvy. I see it coming now.. in the future you'll be able to undo mistakes like mine with a click of a button..
