Usb Modems, and the XOom - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys im new to honeycomb tablets comming from ipads etc.. just decided to give andriod a try, so i read over at acer aconia tab that they managed to port the drivers from the usb modems, like vodafone etc.. to work on the tab with an otg cable, you can check the post over here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118639
i am asking if its possible that someone could manage to do the same here on the xoom,
im asking this as im getting my wifi xoom after 2 days, and most of the time i spend outside so the idea is just amazing to use the usb modem.
thx once again guys and any usefull topics for new guys like me to andriod will be great

hey guys what no help, no one tried it before

There are a few threads on this at the moment. But no one has found out how to get it to work on the Xoom yet. Or if they have no one has posted a solution.

I believe it's probably kernel related. I guess if I were you I would start on trying to get the USB modems to work in Linux. From there you can probably extract or compile a kernel that will detect it (ADVANCED WORK).
Read that thread in the OP and see if you can see how they got it to work on that tablet. It may be a similar process. You may also have luck PM'ing the person on that thread to see if he can point you in the right direction.

[Q] Custom ROM for MID knock-off tablet

I have sh***y tablet with some useless modified version of android ( or at least seems so). I'd like to know if there is custom android ROM for those cheap chinese tablets that are on the market right now. And also how to flash it eventually
Ive got the same man. I cant even find out how to put it into recovery mod. Its not worth the time or effort.
I have one of those tablets too... They are a ****, I should have saved those $100... in order to buy a real tablet!
Help is here!
Hey guys, I completely agree that these tablets are useless right out of the box. After doing a lot of searching I found some custom ROM's that make these tablets 1000% better. Just got to techknow.freeforums.org/wm8650-1-3-0-hybrid-honeycombmod . There is a forum where you can identify your tablet and then download one of these amazing ROM's. You can thank me later.
If any of you would bother searching, you'll notice that there are a few dozen different threads regard chinese tablets and custom roms. You need to identify which tablet you have, what chipset it's running and then read through the threads.

SAME HERE - TREK HD 9020a = total PoFS!! Lasted less than 2 months b4 it bricked
Yep I was dumb enough to believe the douchebag at AT&T when he told me I could get a new nice which was supposed to be a Samsung tablet but they were out & conveniently said they wouldn’t get anymore of the Samsung’s in so I would have to take the trek junk or nothin. It lasted 2months tops b4 it bricked all on its own somehow - guy I got it from said there wasn’t anything they could do so basically I got f’d paying several hundred dollars 4 a 5 dollar made in China sweat shop piece of fn **** bcuz I had to pay 10 per month no matter what til the time was up or I had paid off what was supposed to be FREE.!! YEAH RIGHT! If any1 was curious what phone I got with the tablet I got this Samsung note 5 - total price of SH!T too & the 1 & only time I have ever left my jailbroke iPhone b4 or since. Lol. But i found the old trek hd 9020a & figured I’d c if by now maybe some1 had a good recovery rom & a way to load it onto a bricked device. Can any1 help please? Thanks in advance - sorry it was a bit long. Only thing it will do is bring up the AT&T android logo screen at the start & the stays on anywhere from a few seconds to maybe a minute then it goes right back to unresponsive blank screen til ya do another hard reset.

How would I go about flashing a ROM on a "generic" tablet

Hey guys
First let me say that I did try to look around the forums, but did not find anything relevant .. the search tool really isn't that great.
My parents, in all their wisdom, decided to go ahead and buy two "generic" android tablets whilst I was away at uni without asking for my advice.
Now had I known, I would have told them to stay the hell away from them, unfortunately I am now left with two annoying adults wanting me to make their tablets faster and better.
I am a pretty good programmer and am doing computer science at Uni, so I though i might try to root/flash a custom ROM onto those tablets myself (i know nobody else will ever do it). However I have never touched anything 'android dev' related (apart from obviously rooting and flashing my own HTC Desire) so I really have no idea about where to start.
This is where you lovely people come in: I would be oh so grateful if someone could put me in the right direction as to whatI should be looking into in order to root, and eventually flash a rom onto a new device that no other dev has ever touched before. I'm guessing that if people are doing it for mainstream devices, its entirely possible to do on the tablets I have, I just need to know where to start looking.
Thanks a bunch in advance guys, please don't be to harsh on me <3
I do not know if this will help you or not, but I also am trying to flash a ROM for a "generic" android device. Given that mine is a phone and not a tablet, I do not know if this would work for you or not therefore I'd recommend doing prior research; however, I was able to root my device using the z4root app.
As far as I know, the next step would be installing a recovery (such as clockwork recovery in ROM Manager) in case something goes wrong. I'm not certain about how one would go about porting that software, but their are instructions posted on the developer's website. I don't know enough about the process so I can't really give anymore input; however, if you find any other information, be sure to let me know as well
definitely will thanks!
I've got one problem with one of the tablets already .. it never came with a usb cable, and does not have a micro usb, min usb or anything that I may know as a port, it only has some kind of proprietary port that strangely looks like an iPod/iPhone/iPad port but I can't be sure as I do not own an ipodcable to try it out .. is it in any way possible that a generic tablet could have an apple connector on it?

I can just tell you from my experience using a Ciphone Pro (IP4 knock-off running android). It came with a cable that looks very similar to an iphone cable (my girlfriend and I cannot tell the difference between them). I can plug my phone into either my cable or her Iphone 3GS cable to charge; however, when she once plugged her phone into my cable, her Iphone said the charge was not compatible. Because the android phone didn't display any prompts when connected to the iphone adapter, I assume that these generic devices are compatible with it. I hope this helps, but you could also check all of the iphone cables you have lying around because maybe one of them actually came with the device

One thing that I've noticed is that there are quite a few "generics" out there that are actually rebadged versions of each other. If your tablets are one, then if you can find the line of tablets that they belong to, then you might be able to find a development community behind that line of tablets. If that's the case, then there might already be recoveries/roms available for you to flash onto these tablets. I'm not sure of a great resource but androidforums.net might help.

I would like to marry you Sir. Thanks to your advice I looked around, using the generic pads specifications, and ended up finding out that they were just "rebranded" flytouch epad. From there, I was able to find compatible ROMs for both tablets on http://www.slatedroid.com/ and http://techknow.freeforums.org.
I know have root, google apps and a nice speed increase on both of'em
Thank you very much for the help

Might I ask how you came to this conclusion? I'm trying to see if I can install custom ROMs on my phone and I believe that it is more than likely that there is a compatible version floating around somewhere. I'm not exactly sure what I should be searching for, so if you have any pointers it would be greatly appreciated

All I did was look at the specs of my device (ram, processor, screen size and internal memory being the big ones) and just tried to look for any other device with the same specs. It took a lot of googleing though, so be ready to search through useless search results for a while.

[Q] A Few Questions About the TF101 (Thinking of Buying)

Hi Folks,
I just bought an Acer A500 and I'm really disappointed in it. The screen isn't very good, and wifi seems a bit wonky on it. Not that I'm against hacking, because I'm not at all. I don't like the fact that it doesn't work with ad-hoc wifi connections out of the box. The thing I loved about it was that I had it rooted, recovery and a custom ICS rom installed within an hour.
I know the TF101 has a better screen so I'm not going to ask that. I've tried to search for most of this info, but you know how good search is, so I'll ask here.
I see the tab has root, is there a one click method that I missed? I thought I saw one for it at one point but haven't seen it since.
As far as wifi goes, will this thing hook up to our android phones using the tether apps (not pdanet)?
How easy is it to brick one of these? Stupid question I know, but I've been using Samsung phones which are pretty much impossible to brick unless you really screw up on a kernel, so I would just like to hear what you think.
Reason I ask is because I debated between this and the A500. I went with the A500 based on price. I've been theming over on the the Nexus S for AOKP and CM9 so I'm looking for a tab that I will be able to work with the same roms so I can expand into tablets. I've also started trying to do some source builds so I can make some of my own visual modifications to some of the jar files within the framework.
Thanks in advanced for any input you can give!
1. Easy to root, especially the earlier models.
2. Wifi tether & Bluetooth tether (I recommend bluetooth highly!)
3. Almost impossible to brick if you have one of the earlier Transformers with NVflash.

I use my inspire 4g to connect to all the time. I just place my phone into hotspot mode and use Wep Security and then just log on with the tab.

On a new model, all you get is CWM. So make a back up and hold it dear. Because if something gets hosed while flashing and you don't have anything to go back to. Its dead.
On an older model they have nvflash and can recover from anything.
So what I'm hearing is buy a refurb and hope?

Mine is a new model. SBK2. I have flashed it 30 times and never had an issue. Granted I have my original backup and origianl kernel on a 2 gig card I had lie'n around and then I placed that in my safe.
As long as you know what you are doing yer all good. Maybe. Lol
try to find a used one preferably SBK1 which is B-70(some) and below they are much easier to work with when it comes to modding and hacking (NV flash) which is like ODIN for Samsung phones. They are great tablets dont get me wrong but the new wave of devices are unfortunetly going to make these tabs obsolete much better than the Acer devices you spoke of

I've also been looking for the past 3 months or so. I've tried a few things including this which is probably the closest I got to having something work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2036778
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
All in all, I read that the verizon devices are more locked down than others and I haven't found a working root as of yet.
I haven't tried this yet, but I guess it's worth looking at:

Err well, kinda.. I took my i915 back (waited til day 13 of the 14 I had still searching to no avail) and walked next door to Walmart and purchased a 5113 :/ sorry. On a side note, if you have that option, I recommend it, you'll save around $200 and if you REALLY need mobile data on the tablet, tether your phone

Official support for that device was dropped a long time ago, no one currently on the team owns one.
Crap and got ya I'm guessing that also means u don't have a direction to suggest for me to look toward to fix that on a phone in general. It honestly sucks that it was discontinued cuz I do honestly like this phone and can't get new one till tax time and wish I could work out the few issues with this ROM on this phone so after I get new phone I can use this one as gameboy etc.... The zmax has been out for over 6 years now and development for it has been dead since about 2016. As far as the stock firmware goes it was never updated past android 4.4. Everything 5.0 and up came in the form of custom roms. As for buying multiple Z970 phones and sending them to people to try to revive development for it, good luck. It was a budget phone from the moment it came out and by today's standards its specs are abysmal. I seriously doubt any developer worth their salt would be interested. The best advice I can give you is to just get a better, newer phone, and if you want custom roms look for one that's already supported. If you need to go back to stock there should be some stock rom zips you can flash through TWRP. I know at one point I had them on android file host, though I haven't checked in years.
