[Q] iPAQ 512 unlockable? - Non-Touchscreen Windows Mobile Other

I want to try an alternate carrier and they require unlocked phones. It's My Simple Mobile and I have an iPAQ 512 to play with to see if the service is any good.
The device was originally purchased in China and has been working on T-Mobile. How can I tell if it's actually locked anyway?
Thanks

Well, I guess it's already unlocked, working on t-mobile and when I search networks, I see AT&T listed as well. I did the simple mobile sim from CompUSA and got it working via t-mobiles service (I guess simple mobile piggybacks off t-mobile.)

[Q] Why does my bootloader say "AT&T" with no SIM?

I bought an ATT frequency compatible NS (from negri) before it was available on ATT. Everything works as expected on ATT. However, the other day I removed my SIM, did a factory wipe, and then rebooted back into the bootloader and noticed that it reported "ATT" as my network even without the SIM installed. Does this mean my phone is somehow locked to ATT now? I don't care for my personal use but when I end up selling this thing later my expectation was that the next owner could use whichever frequency compatible carrier they choose. I don't have a way to test this with a different SIM. What's the deal here?
If you bought it from AT&T then it can only use AT&T's data networks. T-Mo and AT&T both use SIM so you can switch them out, but only shfor 2g/edge and voice.
That's just carrier info, if it wasn't a Google Nexus phone it would have influence on the phone. There's no downside of having a ATT in the bootloader carrier info.
Some ppl spread rumors that only "free", eg EUR (for Europe), phones get updates via Google, but it has yet to be proofed.

No nexus phone is sold sim locked, even the carrier subsidized versions.

I said where I bought it (negri electronics) before it was even available from ATT.
The 9020a is frequency compatible with ATT, Canadian carriers, some others elsewhere in the Americas, and will do 2G/gprs in nearly every region.
My question was about the phone reporting ATT as the carrier info in the bootloader w/out a sim. Phone has zero relation to att other than it happens to support UMTS on the same bands.

I realize this from reading it everywhere. I just find it odd for att to show even with no SIM. Maybe it just reports whatever the last installed sim was?

The carrier info is independant from your last SIM card. Atm there's no hint to what the carrier info in bootloader is used for. For the European version (VDF, O2, EUR) you can change them around as you please via Odin w/o any effect on your phone.

If I understand that correctly: Any Nexus S, in its AT&T version bought at any Best Buy store in the USA is 100% SIM unlocked, correct?
But, what about the Operating system itself, Android: Does a Nexus S AT&T version bought at a Best Buy store has the pristine original version of Android as Google intended, with all its features (and describes on www (dot) google (dot) com/nexus/#/tech-specs ) ?
I have read of cases that, for instance, Nexus S AT&T phones from Best Buy had its tethering feature disabled ? If so, is this a tinkering of the OS by the carrier or store no matter the SIM (i.e. if I put in a SIM from my country's carrier, it'd still have tethering blocked)? or this presumed "disablement" of tethering is SIM/carrier dependent (i.e., not an Android alteration per se)?
Any comments on this are well appreciated. I plan on buying soon a Nexus S on Best Buy during a next trip to the USA. The phone will be used in Mexico where my carrier uses the same frequencies as AT&T or 3g.
Thanks in advance.

[Q] 710 Tango Update

I'm a newby. Sorry if this is a dumb question. I have searched unsuccessfully for answers. I have a T-Mob branded 710, sim-unlocked, which I have used successfully on AT&T in the US and am currently using on SpeakOut in Canada. SpeakOut provides services using the Rogers network in Canada. My question is how/when will I get the Tango update as I am essentially carrier agnostic but MS does have the correct Cdn phone #. I have been checking the phone itself for updates and Zune but nothing so far.
PS: Had to cut down a full size SpeakOut SIM to make it work in the 710 but currently get all services 4G except that it won't interactively support mapping (Bing, Nokia)

If it is T-mob branded, I am surprised you can use it on so many networks other than T-mob. Chances are it is unbranded? If it is unbranded you get the updates independent of carriers.
Branded phones get the update when the carrier they are branded to would get it (in the case of Tango on TMoUS, that's starting next week). The branding is determined by a registry value in the phone, but I don't really recommend messing with that vaule; it's *possible* you could receive the wrong update package for your phone's current state (although I think Tango is a simple enough update that it would probably be OK). You'd need to be using a custom ROM to edit the registry on the Lumia phones.
Tango Update
Is this still true even when you're no longer using that carrier? My T-Mo service was pay-as-you-go when I purchased the 710. I no longer have a valid T-Mo phone #.
PS: when I said the phone is still T-Mo branded, I'm assuming this because one of the boot-up messages still shows the T-Mo log.??

It doesn't matter what carrier you are currently with or even if there is a sim card in the phone or not. When t-mobile and microsoft press the button, an update will be available for your phone through zune.

Att one x over seas?

I have an att one x and I'm headed to Europe. Is it possible at all to get my phone to work there, or would I have to have the international version?

Roaming on AT&T or using a local carrier SIM (such as a prepaid)?
If using a local SIM, you will need to SIM unlock the phone. Folks on here have had success with a couple online paid SIM unlock services for about $11. I don't think all the services have the ability to unlock our particular phone, only a certain services could do it when it was being discussed a month or so ago. Just browse or search for the thread discussing SIM unlock or using the phone on T-Mobile, and you will find the particular unlock service/websites that work.
Roaming on AT&T is really pricey, but I do it when travelling on business, as I just charge it to my work. If you intend to do this, you need to call AT&T customer service (611 on your phone) before you go and setup international roaming. Its not activated by default, and you have to do it by phone (can't do it online).
Either way, the phone will work just fine in Europe, both voice/EDGE and 3G. Most places in Europe use GSM 900 and 1800 MHz for voice and EDGE, and HSPA/UMTS 2100 MHz for 3G. All of which are fully compatible with the AT&T One X. I was just in Germany, and both voice and 3G data were working fine on this phone.
If you want to verify the bands used in the particular country (or countries) you are travelling to, you can look here:
http://www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html
Thanks for the response. I tried to call att and they said the phone was not able to be unlocked. I ended up buying an unlock code on eBay, for anyone else who is interested. It was only 5 dollars and now I am able to run a sim from any network. Thanks again for the info!

AT&T will not provide the SIM unlock code until 10 months after a phone's release. You also have to be a postpaid account holder in good standing for at least 90 days.
Also be aware that whatever local carrier you intend to use, will have to be one that has micro-SIMs available (or you can cut them using tools or guides available online, if you care to try it). Micro-SIMs are getting more common, as more new devices have them. But wouldn't hurt to do a bit of checking before your trip.

[Q] AT&T unlocking ?

HI,
I'm thinking of buying AT&T 1020, but I from Europe and don't want to wait any exclusive period to over (like 920) so I can unlock the phone.
Did someone tried this already to unlock 1020 bought from AT&T ?
Evidently there are reports of people getting AT&T to unlock their devices, but not everyone has been successful so your mileage may vary.
I called at&t to unlock and the rep said the device can't be unlocked till 2014. I called back and asked for a manager, I explained to him that I bought it at full price and the phone is not on a contract. I was actually told if a device is bought at full price then yes it can be Unlocked. the manger put me on hold and then returned with the unlock code just fight the issue with at&t and ask for a manager even if you have to call several times that is as long as you bought it full price.

i think to have already the italian Keyboard and the English so
Yes, I've got the same problem. Have you solved it?
Phone was unlocked with code provided by ATT rep, but tethering isn't working. I know that AT&T phones from Microsoft stores were unlocked by personnel without problems.
https://twitter.com/bongiozzo/status/383679862638387200 here is my conversation Nokia Care US (AT&T admitted that phone fully unlocked in their systems) with no resolution.
I've got additional Russian keyboard - so it doesn't look like solution.
Actually I've experienced once this problem when was using Lumia 920 with AT&T SIM in USA business trip. When I returned to Russia I couldn't share internet with the same error message.
So I launched Access Point from Settings which sets parameters to Cellular, MMS and Internet Sharing. Problem was solved.
But I don't have Access Point in my Lumia 1020 setting. Moreover, firmware of ATT Lumia 1020 is older than official Russian firmware of Lumia 920.
What is possible solution to enable internet sharing? It's critical for me.
Does flashing solve this problem? What ROM can I use for Lumia 1020?
I think the tethering is set by the carrier and even though you have you're phone unlocked, you can't get tethering working unless you're able to flash a ROM that enables it OOTB. I had a problem with an HTC 8X from Rogers on ATT. Could never solve the problem even though ATT help desk tried to help me for hours.

Nokia 1020 AT&T Tethering unlock solution
I bought my Nokia 1020 from NegriElectronics unlocked (AT&T).
It worked very well in Canada (Rogers), Portugal (Vodafone), Spain (Vodafone). So no question it was unlocked. But Tethering was not working.
I got in touch with Negri and they pointed out this article: http://www.wpcentral.com/issues-internet-sharing-windows-phone-try-out-diy-fix
But I could not apply the workaround because the Cellular Settings did not allow me to add a second APN. I could only update the existing or delete it and add it again.
Anyway, I found this page: http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Pool-of-Knowledge/Nokia-Windows-Phone-8-App-Updates/td-p/1640082
They had a QR code on it to update the Access Point settings app (My Phone did not have it, probably removed by AT&T). Link to QR Code: http://imgur.com/ZLdL6
After I installed the AccessPoint from the QR code, it added to my phone settings an Access Point configuration. Then I could follow the original steps from the WPCentral article.
My Nokia 1020 is now unlocked for Tethering, and I did not have to call AT&T or dial 611...

Will this G5 (H830) work on the AT&T LTE bands?

I want to purchase a G5 and am wondering if will be more prudent to get an international unlocked one for AT&T or get the tmobile version and unlock it. The GSMarena website shows that both phones (the H830 and H820) carry different bands (no 29 and 30 for the tmobile version). Although straight from the LG website both the 820 and 830 show the EXACT same band supports. Thanks!

Don't know yet but I am having a hard time getting my g5 to sim unlock today. T-mobile said it should unlock through the app but it has not worked for me yet even though I met all of there requirements. They said they are escalating the issue. I think maybe they are having technical difficulties with the unlock server. But surely they will figure it out. I will try to report back.
I'm wondering this too. It looks like it should specs wise.
Clear the data on the unlock app and try again, had an issue with a Xperia z3 recently where the app wouldn't allow me to unlock despite being paid off and on the network for over a year, rep said to clear the app data and try again, worked like a charm after trying for three weeks and speaking to 5 different reps who all had varying solutions, one even said she needed to submit a request and id be emailed once approved, last guy was like nope, once it meets requirements its an automatic procedure server side. So I did as he asked and boom!

No unlock yet.
In 10 days I will be already 40 days in the network.

I unlocked it though the app seems there was an issue with the unlock server at t-mobile as the unlocked app failed many times. I called tech support many times but finally i got an email with instructions how to unlock it later with the app and i tried it again and it worked. It said "unlock failed: Unlock Approved: Mobile device is permanently unlocked."
I think the unlock failed was a typing error. but it is now indeed unlocked. tech support had to do something to allow it to be unlocked. I would say keep calling support until it works. now I think I must use my old att phone imei# in order to get LTE working? It seems if your phone imei# is not in a whitelist they wont let u access lte network? If anyone knows how to get Lte working let me know pls?
AT&T 4G LTE is working for me
AT&T LTE is finally working for me. Note to anyone looking to use this phone on AT&T LTE the sim you use must first be activated in AT&T phone first , to enable 4G LTE if it is a new sim. Or if you already got a sim in a phone and LTE is working it should work in the phone if you have correct APN settings.
It seems the sim has to be provisioned in a AT&T brand phone with its imei # which i believe is white-listed for LTE on a AT&T server.
Yes my device is now sim unlocked and I am using it on AT&T now.
I am using my T-Mobile G5 on cricket an AT&T mvno. I switched because they have a totally unlimited plan for $70/Mo only catch is they throttle your speeds to 8 megs down on LTE and 4 megs down on 4G. I bought my phone outright from T-Mobile used it for 2 months on T-Mobile prepaid on the $50 plan and T-Mobile unlocked it for me through the app. I had no problem at all getting LTE from cricket once I put in the correct APN settings. LTE showed up within 30 min after number was ported from T-Mobile.
