Unlocking Desire S? - HTC Desire S

I have it rooted, whats the cheapest way of unlocking this phone? Operator want £20 to give me the unlock code.

Not sure where you are exactly mate but here we have couple of phone repair shops that charge between £5-15 for doing it and in fact in local shopping centres there's like Phone accessory stands run by Indian/Pakistanis who do it for a £10 .Would think most major towns across the water in England would be the same

I bought a code from ebay for £13.45 and it works perfectly!

Could you possibly provide a URL or at the least the keywords that you used to search for this item as I've seen this question asked several separate times in as many threads by people new to S-OFF. It would be good for them to get a working source.
Thanks

There is Software on XDA that unlocks the Desire, I don't know if it'll work on the S.

Sure, I searched for "HTC Desire S unlock code" and came across a seller called "unlock_fusion".
He links to a very nice tool; you put your IMEI in before purchase and it will tell you if they have a code

Does that mean I can unlock it?

Just call tmo. Your code might be wrong one.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
I'm not a t-mo customer, and I don't live in the US..
Try to order another code from a reputable seller and check to see if they are the same. If it is the same, you must have either read the IMEI wrong or enter it incorrectly. If it is not the same, you can take your last chance try to unlock it...

I bought mine on eBay from this seller and it worked fine
http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=260776518349
It was $10 back in may when I bought mine and it looks like it's only $3.20 now. Like I said mine worked fine. Your mileage may vary.
Get back to the person you bought the code from and have them double check it. If you hard lock the device you will never be unable to unlock it. You have to make sure the IMEI is correct by doing *#06# and enter your unlock code super carefully. How many times did you enter the wrong code? LG gives you ten unlock attempts. Why do you only have 1 attempt left? If you want a code fast I can help you get one for $6.00 (cheaper on eBay). Make very sure the next code you try is correct and enter the numbers very carefully.
There is NO reason you have to buy a unlock code.
Cell providers in the USA HAVE too provide you the unlock code, it's the LAW.
They email it too you within 24 hours.

I'm pretty sure there is no law requiring that in the USA. T-Mobile will do it for active account holders. I think you have to have had your account in good standing for a certain number of consecutive days or something. But I don't think there is any law requiring it.

It is lawful to unlock your phone, but there is no law that I know of that requires a carrier to do so. In many cases they will provide you with the code if your case meets their criteria.
Here is T-Mobile's policy on the matter

Actually I've double checked the code that I gave them, and it still does not unlock.
I tried multiple roms, and this is why I have only 1 attempt left.
Think you can help me with the unlock code ? I can give you the code I've tried, and you can see if you have another one listed.
Edit: I've called t-mobile, and after talking with them for 20 minutes, they said that I can ask a "friend" which has a T-mobile account with prepaid and active for over 60 days, which could ask for the subsidized unlock code for me..
Any volunteers ? (It should "cost" you only a call to them..)

Yes but you would need to send me $6.00 by PayPal for me to get the code for you. I would need your IMEI also (triple checked). Then you can see if the code from my source is the same as the code you bought already.

I have unlocked several phones through T-Mobile customer service. I simply tell them I am travelling oversees and need to use a GSM sim card from an oversees provider. Usually I would receive a response within a few days, but have seen 24 hour turnaround times before. The official name for the code is "subsidy unlock code" -at least at ATT they called it that. I think the only limitation is that TMOUS will only unlock 1 phone within a 90 day period per phone line or something like that. Good luck.
I tried to get an HTC One S code from Cellunlocker.net and it initially came back "not found" as they said its too new so try back a week later. I waited a week and a half and the code came back and it worked. Film it and you can get it for free sometimes!

Usually tell them you are traveling abroad and need it unlocked to use another sim card while you are over there. I have had several phones unlocked that way.
I have also just said "I need my phone unlocked for personal reasons" and generally they do not follow up with a why.
Telus is now offering the Blue/gray. Not sure if that would be any easier though.

Yeah, I work for T-Mobile in tech care and we don't care what the reason is really. You can do it for any reason at all as long as your account is eligible. I don't remember all the requirements but the major ones are these:
active account for at least 40 days (might be 45)
not delinquent, nothing past due on your account
not received another subsidy unlock code in the last 90 days for that phone line
There are other things they will check also, but those are the major points we look at. It's real easy though, we just ask for your IMEI and and email address and fill out an electronic form that goes to a department that gets sim unlock codes from the manufacturers. You will usually get an email with unlock code and instructions within 48 hours.

That's crazy. All sellers should have to enter the IMEI of the phone they're selling so eBay can confirm it's the same phone they've sold as what the buyer receives, so in cases like this they can see that it's the same phone, which is not unlocked (and it's not blacklisted etc).
Definitely give the seller bad feedback, even if at the very least it warns someone else off buying from this guy

Just give him the negative first. A seller has the option to contact you and ask you to reverse the feedback which you then only do if he reimburses you the cost of the unlock. He has a 99.9 reputation. Every negative hurts. Glad to see you're almost done with the ordeal. Enjoy that phone.

You need to choose the country that your device is locked for and talk with their technical support (that's what they told me to do).
i tried to edit the last post, you can delete this message.
Region lock and sim lock are two different things. It would be unfair to give the seller negative feedback because of region lock. Aren't ALL samsung phones region locked? To bypass this, you must first put in the sim that belongs to that region, then you can use any other sim.

For an unlock, cant vouch for them though.
are you guys trying the unlock app on the stock rom or 20i_un ROM? There were couple of reports that the unlock app worked only by going into stock ROM (thus losing the unlock first) and then using the Device Unlock app. Verify this with the website you purchased from before doing anything, I wouldn't accept any responsibility if you lose your soft unlock and the Device Unlock you bought doesn't work either. Good luck.
I tried the other day to get one of their Facebook csr's to escalate the imei to eligible list but they wouldn't. Funny thing is they recommended using a 3rd party unlocking service to get the imei eligible. I asked which one? No answer apart from look on Google lol....
In terms of all these unlock services what I would do before flashing a new ROM so the unlock app works is check your imei on T-Mobile's imei status check page first : https://www.t-mobile.com/verifyIMEI.aspx (once your service provider confirms they've done the job)...
