[Q] Asus TF 32GB showing 16GB (Newegg Openbox) ?? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Last week I received my transformer from Newegg. LET ME TELL YOU FIRST SOMETHING, I risked an "openbox" TF32GB for 228U$ with the full refund policy of 30days (of course I'm still on time for that). The experience was more than good! The tablet looks like brand new. Is a B40, but I also have from a friend a B50 to compare with. Battery life is the same with Prime 1.5 on both, screen is perfect for me, a bit of bleeding down at the bottom... but less than the full price B50 ! Sound is good too, so far, everything is super acceptable. My only concern is that under Settings->Storage, it shows a total of 12.96GB and that called my attention. Of course my guess is that this unit is not just openbox but refurbished, it went to repair who knows what, re-assembled and back to the market carousel. Strange would be it was re-assembled with a 16GB disk and sold as 32. Yes, I checked the full S/N and it coincides with the one in the box where clearly says is a 32GB version. So.... here it comes my ignorant question:
Could this be what happened? Or when you flash Prime 1.5 or whatever ROM it could make a new partition of 16GB total and I'm not seeing the other 16GB which are "unpartitioned" ? I tried to get an application from the market to see partitions (like in other linux distros) but had no luck.
Anyone with any light on this? ...I don't know if returning the TF is worth the effort. The unit I received is pretty solid! (Also this is an experience for anybody thinking about "openboxes" at Newegg) I don't think I would fill the 32GB anyway. I was able to connect via Samba with an external drive and it works great! ....but if I have 32GB and I am missing something in order to see the total memory, I would like to learn how.
Thanks in advance folks and thank you so much to all of you working hard in making the TF such a beast of a device!!

My newegg open box TF 16GB cost $295. It shows 12.63GB total storage in settings.
Yes you can repartition an SSD to be any smaller size (or sizes). This also might be done if the SSD wear level reached on some chips and device was repartitioned after failed chips removed (logically not physically). When wear level reached on a chip (all the allocated standby bits used) the entire chip fails, which could be a large memory chunk (unsure if 16GB possible).
But, you basically do *not* have a 32GB TF. You can return it but they typically last only 2 minutes on newegg.
If ASUS warranty possible you could try to get a replacement, but I think someone could also have done a switch. If ASUS gets a warranty RMA with the wrong device it would create some interesting arguments. Good luck.

For the price... if your happy then your happy. I don't think warranty will be an issue. Just tell them you bought it I'll open box and it is what it is.
You could call newegg and tell them you were ganked. Best they would do is offer you a refund. But you may not find another once for that price.

Thanks Bob for the answer! Yeah, what you say sounds logic to me, it could be bad chips on a SSD and... ended up being ~16GB. If it's that.. I only hope it stops there!
And player911, you are right too. I"m happy with the device. I was expecting a bit more of battery life. Did a test of playing a movie streaming over my local network... in 2hs battery went from 100% to 75% (display at full bright). After that, a couple of hours in standby, battery maintained ok, then another online movie for 2:40hs. ...battery went all the way down to 25%. To my peace of mind, I ran the exactly same experiment at the same time with the other TF I had at hand from a friend... exactly same results, so I'm not blaming my unit for that. Hope the coming ROMs will optimize a bit battery life (still have to try Kernel update for Prime 1.5!)
By now, happy with my purchase. I also thought that for the money I would need to spend shipping back if I want a refund, I can get an 8GB microSD and that would fulfill my "space needs" for the time being more than sure.
Thanks for the replies both!

RMA it to ASUS get your 32gb

Just Got Mine

I am still in looking at it
I have a lot of setting up to do...this is my first android device
When I got my first Android device I didn't sleep for 48 hours. I was on a 2 day tweaking binge. Seriously though, your going to love it and after you use it for a month or two you will never want to use anything else.

1 or 2 day tweaking? I've been unsing android for over a year on two different phones and I'm still tweaking lots and lots of options! And I hardly ever get on my laptop or desktop anymore because my phone has replaced them. My phone has pretty much taken over the use of any other device, except for TV.
Congrats! I'm sure you'll love it like so many of us all have come to. Welcome to Android my friend
Just got my first Android device too, and what a phone to start with! The G2x whips my Blackberry's behind. I, too, will be geeking out all day.

My Nandroided HD2 is the same way. I can do 95% of everything that I can do on my PC. Even TV, there are so many things streaming now. As long as I am in town with HSPDA or even 3G I can stream video forever.
Not much not to like about these phones as long as they run good.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I am still tweaking constantly, just not for 48 hours straight with no sleep.
is it suppose to come with a SD card??? I just opened mine and it was factory sealed but there is no SD card in the phone or in the box

No, I'm glad because I never use the ones that are supplied since there usually Class 2 cards. Go get yourself a 8gb Class 10 Transcend and you will thank me later.

I've never seen anything that says it should. I suppose it's become a common expectation now as even phones that have large internal storage have often still come with a small external card.
Honestly though, with 8 gig internal storage, what do I want with a 2gig card (what usually comes with these phones)? I'd probably end up replacing it by the time I used up the 8gig with a 16 or 32gig card anyway.
I picked mine up this morning, first to the local T-Mo store.
Got the phone, Skullcandy(blech) ink'd mic earphones (none included from LG), Body Glove cover, screen protector, and car charger for just over $550 out the door. The accessories were pretty much free!
Fast phone, even compared to the Nexus One with 2.3.3.
Now if I can figure out why it's not downloading my apps that I've got installed on the Nexus One...
Lol just got mine. The rep gave me the scrn protector free as well

Going to Purchase a Transformer

Hey guys im new to the touchpad world hopefully you guys can help me out here.
So as everyone knows black friday is coming upon us and there happens to be great deals on the Asus Transformer (Link: http://shopping.yahoo.com/articles/yshoppingarticles/748/the-best-black-friday-deals-of-2011/)
I see that the touchpad and the dock that is in the picture above are seperate so im planning on getting both
I pretty much just want to know everything that there is to know about this device, i will of course do my research but would love some input from the xda community who is no rookies when it comes to having one.
What i really want to know is
1. Is it rootable, and if it is what are the + sides of rooting it. i have rooted few phones in my time so now rookie to it either but i dont know how the whole touchepad scenes work.
2. Im getting one for me and my mom from blackfriday and she is a Jehovas Witness and she wants one that she can take out and about with her with all her work on it. Such as some apps that android has for logging in files and keeping track of her hours and such. Does the Transformer have these apps or will i have to jailbreak it for her to make it run android so she is familiar with the market.
3. What is the battery life on this thing/
4. And any other downsides and Plus sides u guys think i should know about this before standing my ass outside for hours before purchasing
Thanks for hearing me out guys and really appreciate even the slightest info. Like i said i am gonna do my own research on top of all this but anything u guys want to chime in on is a plus.
Appreciate it guys, thanks! Happy Thanksgiving as well.
One other thing guys, does a TF have a disk drive to insert cds and download programs? Or even the dock for that matter?
THanks
Yes, it is rootable- there is a one click method for rooting and clockworkmod now! There isn't a DVD drive but there are 2 full size usb 2.0 ports (dock only) mini-hdmi (tab) micro SD (tab) and ful size SD (dock). Also, the docking station adds 8 hours of battery life (16 total) and comes with a trackpad. Rooting the tablet isn't nessecary but if you do, the revolver ROM increases performance, customiazation and battery life. Good luck! hope i answered your questions.
i just got mine transformer and keyboard dock today. It is by far the best tablet out.IMO I had a xoom and kept it for 3 days and went back to best buy and traded for a galaxy tab 10.1 and keyboard dock which the tab doesnt lock into the dock i almost droped my tab off the dock 3 times in one day... so went back to bb today and traded for the transformer.... i love the way he tab locks into the keyboard dock..... less than 15 minutes after i got home with it i had it rooted and CWM installed..... very easy

Joey_UFC, all your questions can be found by taking the time to read the ASUS Transformer sections. I will give you a hint on battery life, that I created a poll a while back to collect what kind of battery life people get.

When is Asus going to start doing some QC

Well after a week and a half of owning the TF700 (CG 32gb - C7 serial), I returned mine today to BB I got it the day before I left on a cruise. Did not have a lot of time to play with it before I left (knew I wouldn't have wifi on the ship) so first thing I did was get .26 update on it, then loaded a few ebook, readers and games, and a few movies. I had it in Airplane mode for the trip. Right away I had problems with freezing, but the biggest issue is the touchscreen would sometimes be completely unresponsive, and then other times worked great. But more often then not it didn't work, and I couldn't even turn pages in the few books I loaded. Also had bad light bleed. Gave up after 2 days of frustration and used my wifes Nexus 7 the rest of the trip, which worked great. Funny thing is my daughter has an original Transformer and she even said my tablet sucked.
So when I got back this week, I did a factory reset, but it didn't solve the issues. Since the Nexus 7 is also an Asus device, it made me start to wonder what the difference in QC is on these 2 devices. I thought about playng the exchange game, but then felt betrayed by Asus. Even though JB will help the device, it should work fine with ICS. We shouldn't have to swap these units like this to hopefully get a "a good one". Also remembered the Prime, which I returned after a week due to similar freezing issues. Wonder what the Asus financial department calculates as far as return rate and costs.
I really want to love the device but sick of how we all have accepted the fact that you need to exchange multiple units as standard procedure. This is the reason why Asus will never come close to Apple even if their hardware is more feature rich.
Almost tempted to get a Nexus 7 but really want a 10" tablet and need the keyboard option. I guess I am going to sit on the sidelines another few months and try agan when all the Windows 8 tablets come out.
Why can't Asus step up their QC on their tablets?

I feel your pain. Same exact thing happened to me, my kids told me it sucks, randomly app FC, screen freeze etc.. So I tried couple different things attempt to improve the performance , I don't want to use custom rom yet. And now my tab is running much better. Here what I did, 1. forced 2D rendering, root the tab and installed browser2ram, installed Setcpu(free) and make sure I/O scheduler set to cfq and governor set to interactive. Now my tab is running pretty good, no more freeze/FC and browser is fast (Boat browser with flash set to on demand). Netflix is working well too. On another note, rooting is very simple and safe and you still can receive OTA Jb, but I wouldn't recommend unlock bootloader.

[Q] Dock is not charging pad, is that normal?

Hello,
I just changed the dock because of an almost dead key, and the new one doesn't seem to charge the pad. Has anyone had this before?
The pad is at 40%, the dock has been charged and shows 99% (still with the charging icon). But the pad is just discharging, its level decreasing.
The LED on the dock is green, and the LED of the pad is not on, not even orange.
Does that mean that this dock is faulty too?
Thanks for any advice!
I've seen this happen on occasion. Sometimes my dock charges my pad and sometimes it does not....I haven't been able to figure out what the difference is, but I suspect that when the pad is partially active the dock will charge it but when it goes into sleep mode it stops charging.
1) Generally the dock won't charge the pad unless it's under a certain %. I thought it was like 80% or something like that. The dock not charging the tab at 40% is not usual and yes I would exchange it before the return period runs out.

The dock is supposed to charge the tab if the tab goes under 70%, then it will charge it up to about 90% (unless the dock goes under 4-5%, then it will stop charging). At 40% the dock should charge the tablet. IMHO, it is not normal...

That's the numbers I've seen, it confirms my thoughts. Thanks guys!
I'm wondering if it is possible at all to get a Transformer that works correctly. And that keeps functioning. Here it's already the 3rd attempt and still not the good one, I think I'll just demand a refund and forget about the tablet stuff.
Last time I buy something from ASUS, really, it was a dreadful experience.
Yes, it is perfectly possible to get a fully functional, faultless pad.
There's a few production lines that are flawed. Frustratingly, those are the stocks the 'big low-priced stores' seem to have. (Bestbuy, amazon, etc.) Which means the rest of us have to keep hearing 'they're all bad!' when in fact they're not. If you get a bad one three times at the same store, GET A DIFFERENT PRODUCTION NUMBER. It's not that hard.
Silly people, wanting the cheapest price possible and then complaining the stock is flawed. Well duh, where'd you think the low price comes from?
Return it, it should charge it when it gets below 70%. Get your money back and buy it somewhere else. (And don't take any of this personal, I'm just sick and tired of all those cheapskates whining about bad products when they paid 30% of what we who have a flawless one paid for it. )

Nope, it's not coming from a "cheap" shop, not even online. It's from two separate vendors that have a good reputation. And getting a different production number is easy to say, you don't exactly get to unpack their stock
Though in fact, I've already unpacked a part of it, trying to find working parts... you can add one more fruitless attempt to those above. Thankfully the vendor does the exchange directly from the stock, if you go through ASUS process you can wait one month or more between each attempt (from my experience and friends').
No, there is no such thing as a "black market of lower-quality products", Amazon get their lower price from sheer quantities -- for example their games and books are cheaper than everywhere else, yet the content is the same. I never had any problem with their other products either.
Maybe you were lucky and a few others were, but in this occurrence it's definitely a poorly controlled (if not poorly built) product. 4 defects on 4 attempts in two different places, that speaks from itself.

Would you buy your TF700 again?

With all the warranty and alleged issues would you buy one again on sale or is there a different tablet you would get this times? Being 6'11, I need a 10 inch tablet but I'm on the fence but it seems like the safest bet and I didn't feel like risking the "China special".

Actually, I would indeed. However, the TF700 stock is blah, you have to unlock the tablet to unleash its true potential. With ROMS like CyanogenMod and CromiX it makes it faster than a stock Nexus 7. But since it is about a year old It may be work to wait.

Thanks, took the plunge it was hard not to at >300.
I would buy it again without hesitation.
The combo with the dock and CromiX is still atm unbeatable.
On travel with 15hrs batt time watching full hd movies, do 90% on it what I do on my laptop, the microsdcard, the sdcard in the dock, the usb slot, no other combo is available atm that can beat that. Period.
Is there more to say?

Congrats! Hope you can also find a great deal for the dock. From a productivity perspective, I would also buy it again-the keyboard and extra battery definitely puts the tablet above the rest in my opinion. From a multimedia perspective, I may have given more serious thought to Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 - I've heard it runs fairly smooth and having speakers in the front is a nice feature.
In a heartbeat.

Probably not. While I haven't unlocked it yet, I did root it and for a while everything was great. Then ASUS pushed an update last December, I think, and from then on the tablet became the most frustrating I've ever used. Incredible lag (3 - 5 seconds for the menu to come up after tapping the lower right corner!!!) and other flaky behavior -- like root suddenly stopped working without my doing anything ... Voodoo showed it still rooted, but superuser was completely nonfunctional. Three reboots later root is working again (?!) and it's just back to being laggy.
I'll never buy another ASUS tablet again if they paid me.

P.S. I suppose I should unlock it and install a custom ROM one of these days ...

Truthfully have you tried a factory reset and such? I am unlocked but did install the stock 4.2.1 and I felt it ran really well, compared to 4.1.1 anyways, which is what was pushed in December. If you had your tablet for 10 months, or already unlocked but having flashed CromiX, you should definitely do so .
Also I agree with another posted above even though I already commented once . Today I was flashing files, modding, for about 7 hours straight. I didnt have dock on but I had it with me. When the tablet hit about 30%, I put the dock on to recharge that battery. By the time the dock was at 0%, the tablet was back at 75% Now, if you can get 7 hours on 70%, with dock adding back up to 3/4 battery, its an easy 12-14 hours of tablet. I doubt any tablet out there can do that . A friend had a HTC phone, forget exact version. He was playing it for maybe 3 hours and his phone was already half way dead, and he didnt have a backup battery either .

Unlock and all your problems will disappear. It's weird to think a third party can advance a tab better than the company's own developers, but they can tenfold.
No.
And I shouldn't have to massage it into acceptable working order by violating the warranty.

A warranty that only fixes hardware issues, not software. The only way to actually get an acceptable ROM, to me anyways, is to unlock. I personally think 4.2.1 fresh runs great, however it is bloated, and the stock kernel could use some of _That's tweaking to make it acceptable, again personal opinion. And sbdags or dasunsrules, dont know if I spelled correct, will treat help you much more then ASUS will ever software wise.

It is what it is. If you're unhappy with it, you have three options: Take it back, keep it and endlessly complain about it, or flash a tweaked rom.
It does seem a wierd place to complain about it though, on forums where people have found the solution for all of us. People who have risked their warranties also for the benefit of everyone.. just saying.

After 1 or two months of use,if a problem doesnt occur, then more then likely no hardware problem will occur. If something happens, like a screen breaking, they will still place the blame on you. It is only a warranty from defects, not accidental use. So I dont even see the use after a couple months. Truthfully my screen has defects in it, but I live with it. It is not a HUGE dual and can only see it when the screen is off. So it dont actually effect the use of it while you are using it, so no sense in sending it in, and I unlocked knowing the defect, but it is a minor one. The bigger defect was the software ROM on it, but that is fixed .

Yes.
The ASUS TF700T worked fine out-of-the-box, but lagged with the stock ROM. Unlocking it and installing CleanROM Inheritance was the best thing I ever did.
There are two things that I wish it had out-of-the box. The first is a USB port and the second is a version with cellular data services.
I have the USB port adapter and love the fact that ASUS made it a powered USB port adapter, but having a true USB port would have been preferable.
There are times when I wish that I had cellular data services on it, in addition to WiFi. Most phones today have the ability to act as a hotspot, so it's not a big deal, but it would have been more convenient.
Yes. I've used it for university and the dock combo meant I've typed all my notes on ever note. I used it stock for 5 months and even then it was okay. Recently since the latest jb it got slower and so I got the bug for flashing customs. Never looked back since. Performance is amazing. Is quick, snappy, access apps quickly. Annoying it took to now to realise it but glad I did.
At the end of the day you use a tablet to use noted to look at. I'd rather get my moneys worth out of it than barely use it as its buggy etc.
If if breaks it breaks which I hope to god it doesn't. But already I used it and wasnt frustrated with it.
I love it. Which there were more accessories I.e a real smart cover but still love it. Tried the Samsung 10.2 and was awful compared. Resolution was horrid.
I'm sat in car on a long drive with this tethered to my phone loving life.
Just enjoy it. Use it.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using xda app-developers app
hell the F*ck No!
Should have bought a Ultra Book and a Kindle HD.
This thing cost me $750 with the keyboard.
and I prefer to use my ICS phone that's almost 2 yrs old for just about anything I can do with the tablet except videos.
It's totally laggy, and unusable if a app is updating in the background. Some websites take 30+ sec to load.
I've had more random reboots with this tablet then I've had in my entire life with Windows, and I go back to Win 3.1!
My take is: Asus is great at offering features and design, but they suck on execution for anything other than motherboards.
While I enjoy my tablet greatly I'm not sure I would recommend it. I'm one of the small number of people who for whatever reason, their tablets are unable to unlock using the unlocking tool. This renders me unable to experience what others are saying concerning flashing better roms to really make the tablet perform. I also can't get OTAs or user the device tracker. It's currently shipping back from RMA to fix some light bleed on the screen and the issue with the tablet being unable to get OTAs/device tracker to work. I just called and the service rep said the screen was replaced with a new one and all tests they ran on the system came back fine. He couldn't say if the main problem that concerned me of the tablet not communicating with the Asus servers was fixed but there should be a detailed report of what was done. If the unlock tool doesn't work fine, but the tablet should be able to receive any updates Asus releases from the moment it's turned on after purchase. I was fine running the stock rom with any bloatware turned off. Coming from the Prime, it is a smooth user experience for me. My day is not ruined if it takes an extra 3 seconds to open an application.
With the dock this tablet is truly remarkable. The extra battery and being able to type takes the device beyond other tablets in usage. Sure anyone can get a blue tooth keyboard but that is only going to drain the battery faster. It also has the usb port and full size sd-card slot. The screen is really nice and even though I have a anti-glare protector which does subtract from it's clear picture, it's still great.
The reason I wouldn't recommend it is the price and lack of support from some of the big game developers. This is supposed to be a top notch portable multimedia experience and with the gpu in it we shouldn't be stuck running games which are not fully using the hardware. Look around the forums as there are ways to side load the games on to the system but that doesn't mean they will all function properly. Concerning price, a person will end up dropping about $650-700 bucks after tax for the tablet dock combo. If I were to be buying a tablet again and what I've told two coworkers, I'd go for the TF300 line. Sure the screen is not as good but the tablet/dock combo comes out to about $500. Or I would hold out and see what summer tablets are lined up. So far I'm actually not impressed with what the manufactures have out now. I'm interested in seeing what Samsung's new Exynos processors can do in a tablet.
Enjoying my tab, arrived overnight refurbed for $291 pristene condition. Unfortunately it came updated and is on 4.2.1 the kernels 3.1.10, would of like to of tried it before the update and I believe the unlocking options are easier (still confirming). More testing to do before I can unlock what are the most popular\necessary tweaks?
