S-OFF But not rooted? - HTC Desire S

Do I need to do something else? I used Alpha what ever its called, all wen't fine, S-OFF but tried Titanium back up and am told it needs root access, tried screenshot and it wont work?

Tried the process again but it won't let me, says I already have S-OFF

You need to root the phone first using Gingerbreak.

You need to use ginger break http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765

Not at all mate. Just download the gingerbreak .apk file to your sd card, open it & it will install gingerbreak on your phone. Then once this is done go to the gingerbreak app and run it. It will root phone but you will need to do a manual reboot afterwards. Don't worry if it says something along the lines of things went wrong, just go ahead and reboot.
Peace

All you do is download and install it then click root in the app then reboot the device you should get an error before you do a reboot then you should see super user then go to rom manager cwm

S-OFF allows you to obtain root access. In Linux terminology, root is a user with total permission over the machine. In terms of Android, all you need to know is that it's the Superuser app and a binary (executable file) called su, that needs to be installed in the /system partition. S-ON disallows you from touching the /system partition. So even though you turned off security, you didn't actually install su and Superuser.
FYI: Su is not an application, it's a command.

All done now. Thanks for your help.

Rom manager doesn't have permission?

I've done the simple root with NAND setup without hiccup but when trying to backup with ROM manager it says it doesn't have permission.
I have a terminal app and it goes from $ to # when I type su
is there anything I can type in terminal to see if my NAND is actually unlocked?
I also cannot get clockwork to install but titanium has busybox installed.

seems like you have partial root.
do you have "superuser.apk" installed?
try "adb shell" should give you # automatically.
if not, try the root and nanlock again.

I do have # automatically in adb shell, I'll edit this post in a second when I look for superuser
I do not have superuser.apk
Is there anything I can type in terminal and screenshot that will tell you anything?
did some research and downloaded the busybox standalone app from the marketplace.
It says that I am rooted and I installed the busybox.
No changes. only thing i can think is that my NAND is still locked? any way to check this?

do you have a custom recovery?
try this SUPERUSER app
you have to flash it via recovery.
http://bit.ly/su222ef
if you want to check nand..
try this command.
"adb remount"
from command prompt.
if it fails, you dont have nand.
if it completes succesfully you have nand access.
I don't have a custom recovery, can't get any to work or I'm just not doing it right... I'm coming from Windows mobile...
Here's a screen cap of what you requested except on the phone and not adb, don't think it matters for this simple test.
EDIT: Thank you very much for your help with this.
I had the same problem. I re-rooted using OTA SimpleRoot and also tried unrevoked and still had errors trying to flash Clockworkmod recovery. I went into Menu>Settings and clicked on Advanced Mode and it worked.
Will try to help whrn I get to san antonio

Thanks a lot for this! I spent all day trying to figure this out. It seems unless Advanced Mode is enabled this doesn't work. FWIW I'm using DC 3.2.3. Once I enabled Advanced Mode I was able to flash to the latest version of ClockworkMod Recovery!
Thanks for this post!

To root before or after OTA?

Hey everyone. Just got the Samsung Nexus S... and I've got a question.
I've read on these forums that the OTA makes it so you have to flash CWM recovery everytime you want to reboot into recovery to flash a ROM and that it's more difficult to root.
Should I flash the OTA then root or root prior to OTA?
Thanks in advance.

You should get the OTA before you root and it is very easy to make the root stick. I did it with root explorer but I heard you can do it without it.

Which method did you use to root. And how did you manage to use root explore to get root access when root explorer needs root access first in order to operate? Thanks for your response.

No after you root you can use root explorer to make the recovery stick and there are like 5 guides on how to root on every OS in the android development sub-section. (They are stickied)

Thanks again for your response and for the clarification about using root explorer. I have read the stickies regarding rooting the phone, and because there are a few, I was wondering which method you used. I've read that superboot is the easiest and that you can rename a particular system file so the recovery sticks. Thanks again for your response.

Get the OTA.
Apply it.
Boot up to make sure everything is ok. Then boot to bootloader
fastboot oem unlock, confirm it, wipes everything including your internal sd.
flash clockwork mod recovery.
go to clockwork mod recovery from bootloader menu.
mount "internal sd" copy the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip you downloaded (from the guide) to your internal sd.
unmount internal sd.
mount /system
flash the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip file.
reboot phone as normal.
login to your gmail account. go to market, download a rooted app like titanium backup free version, and also download rom manager, and buy/get root explorer.
install all those make sure super user is granted and works.
use root explorer to rename/delete the file in: /etc/recovery.sh file or whatever it's actually called.
go to rom manager, and flash the latest clockworkmod recovery (3.0.0.5)
turn off phone and boot to recovery and make sure it's clockwork mod 3.0.0.5, if it is, you're set.
Very helpful post, nxt. Thank you very much.

Yes, you need to have the Android SDK properly installed and you're able to do a 'fastboot devices' command properly and your Serial number comes up.

[Q] su and busybox deleted after root/reboot

I copied and ran psneuter to gain temp root to an Inspire 4G. Then I remounted /system as rw, copied su/busybox, set permissions, etc etc. After rebooting, su and busybox were gone from /system/xbin. Is the Inspire removing them???

I would sugguest using the hack kit to root. It seems like you didnt have perm root and thats wihy you lost it on reboot.
Yes they were deleted because they were never fully installed. Temp root has proven to be tricky with the Inspire. Use one of the rooting methods available to get full root access.

Don't you lose sound using hack kit? I don't want to have to go through hoops to get sound back.

You lose sound on the downgraded ROM, but once rooted you just install another ROM.
Can you point me to some good and stable ROMs? I don't want to be in a situation where I download a ROM and several things DON'T work.
This isn't like the Captivate, all the roms in the dev section are solid, but my favorite is Android Revolution 3.2
Anything built from source like CM? I dunno where CM7 is at this point.
cm7 is at RC2 and nightlies are up to like 28 or 29 I think.

Root and then Unroot For Secure Email

This may seem like a basic question to you guys.
I work in an industry where our emails our monitored.
We now have the ability to get emails on android phones instead of only being able to use blackberry.
The email is transmitted securely by an app called GOOD.
GOOD will not work on rooted phones.
Can I root & remove bloatware & then unroot ? Or does it all come back?
I assume the phone has to be rooted to run a custom ROM?
Apologies if these are basic questions
Check out this thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
The steps to follow would be to:
1) Install clockworkmod recovery using the one-click recovery flasher that tga gunmann has posted in the development section.
2) Download the 2 zips that jboxer posted in the thread I linked to above and save them to the sdcard on your phone
3) Using clockworkmod recovery flash the root zip and then reboot into Android.
4) Use Root Explorer or some other file explorer with root access and get rid of whatever bloatware you don't want.
5) Reboot into clockworkmod recovery and flash the unroot zip.
6) Reboot phone
That will allow you root access to make any system changes and then unroot the phone to remove su privileges.
Yes u can root and remove bloat with titanium back up then unroot and then the bloat will still be gone. Also I believe u can unroot certain roms. Not sure

I am about to get good next week hopefully , will post back.
I wonder why it wouldn't work on rooted phone's though?
It detects the presence of the su binary among other things and refuses to run.

i cant c y u would have to unroot, it shouldnt matter as apps dont care if it is rooted or unrooted, correction some apps u have to b rooted to work properly.
do u actually get an error message when trying to install an app
the only way is to restore back to stock, or if u just rooted ur stock firmware, meaning u didnt flash a rom, u can try flashing the system.img file, that might work but i never heard of any1 doing that
Yes, application refuses to work telling me that "rooted" phones are not supported. So basically it installs, checks if phone is rooted and refuses to proceed. I hoped I can flash something in CMW to temporarely unroot, then run application, let it do it one time thing (I need to run this application only once successfully) and then I root back in CWM again.

dont think there is a temporary unroot method, going back to stock was the true method to unrooting, which app were u trying to install.
u can trying going back to stock, installing app, let it do its thing, backup with tibu or some other backup, reroot and then restore backup of app.....maybe wont work as restoring a backup is actually reinstalling the app
edit: try this i havent so try at ur own risk http://www.thespicygadgematics.com/2012/06/how-to-easily-unroot-any-android-phone.html it seems easy enough, i didnt think it was possible but it seems to b

thats deleting the app the rooted the phone, but does it actually undo the rooting process, the system files the app changed to make it rooted r still there, the way to check is if u do delete su app, c if root explorer can can mount ur system folder to r/w, or op can c if it the app does install after deleting su.
actually u need su to grant su, so that might not b a good test

The superuser cwm zip installs su and superuser.apk, that's it. There are no other modified apps.
You can remove busy box also if you like, but it's not much use without su.

There is cool app in Playstore (free) which allows rooting/unrooting with no reboots and other complicated steps
FYI
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwxLDMsImV1LmNoYWluZmlyZS5zdXBlcnN1Il0
Voodoo OTA can do a temp unroot as well. The Flixter app will not allow you to stream movis on a rooted phone. I used Voodoo to temp unroot then went back into Flixter and it started to play the movie.
I use an app called Temp root remover
It allows you to temporarly unroot and reroot in a matter of seconds
