Sensation vs G2X Screen contrast? - HTC Sensation

hello, I switched from a G2X to a sensation. My sensation is made in China, AUO screen, dated 6/7. Now I see people saying Sharp screens have better contrast, better black. In comparison, my G2x definitely has better screen contrast and darker blue. in terms of Whites, whites are as white as the G2x in the sensation.
I want to ask you guys, what is your sensation's color contrast like comparing to a G2X? please also state your Screen (AUO or sharp)

I have a sharp screen, it's considerably better than my g2x
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk

How do you tell what screen you have?

I have a Sharp screen and a G2X. The blacks are blacker on my G2X but I could give two ****s which display on my mobile device has better contrast. Now if you asked me if I cared about contrast on my 4 LED Samsungs than yes, I do care about contrast and dark blacks on my HD TV'S. I am failing to understand why people care so much about contrast on mobile devices. People should be caring more about text clarity and brightness in direct sunlight. In both of those categories, my Sensation blows the daylight out of my G2X. When reading or looking at icons on my G2X after looking at my Sensation for a while, the display on it looks fuzzy. Seriously, the Sensations display pros far outweigh the G2X pros.

Once again, ill have to disagree, simply because the g2x's maximum brightness is much better than the sensation. I put both devices at 40%, and the g2x blew it out the water...

It depends on what panel you have. Why would you only put them to 40% when using it in direct sunlight? I have held them next to each other in direct sunlight, both at 100% and the Sensation is much more clearer. I can take a picture or make a video if you don't want to believe me. Even in a picture, the difference is noticeable.

I have an AUO screen and it's fine. The blacks can be just a bit dull but I mean, the viewing angles really are amazing. If I look on from literally 179° I barely notice any color change.

well more contrast is more pleasant to the eyes. to each his own though, I would prefer the bigger screen of the sensation over G2x.

Interesting post.
I was doubting between getting a Sensation or a G2x, and finally bought a Sensation because of Sense and built quality. Well, I compared my old's HTC legend Amoled screen with Sensation's, and with the device in front of me, both are similar, but when the phones are for example in the car near to the radio (using them as GPS) and I have to look from a distance, legends screen is much better. Of course, I prefer Sensation's because of the size and the resolution, but legend's is easier to look from the distance (more color, light and angle vision)
I suposse G2x's is much better than legend's.
Just an opinion.

The contrast ratio is terrible on this phone

Forget the bleeding lcd edges , its the horrible contrast on this phone that will probably cause me to return it.
After coming from the inky black Amoled screen on the Nexus s , this is the most disappointing aspect of otherwise top of the line phone. You can't get a true black on this phone , the best it does is dark glowing gray. In fact anything with a black background looks gray , not total absence of light Black.
I realize that this phone has an LCD screen not an amoled screen , but I never thought the difference would be this pronounced. Example : when I power up my Nexus S the screen is pitch black and when the white Google logo appears , it will appear to floating in space in a dark room. The G2x display will put off it own light, making it very visible in a dark room.
Deep blacks are awesome but I find this screen better in other areas over AMOLED/SAMOLED IMHO. You have to pick what matters to you. I don't spend a ton of time looking at blacks so doesn't bother me

Agreed with you sir. The colors on this phone are awesome and I come from a Galaxy S 4G.
Its up to but every G2X I have sold out my store as well as mine the screen looks great. I am loving this phone for everything it has. Way better then my N1.
There's nowhere you can compare contrast of AMOLED because it's unlimited.
However, I think the black on G2x is a bit "darker" than my MT4 (good screen).

Agree... My moves encoded to WVGA 800x480 @2500k bit rate look great or just as good as my SAMOLED.
The blacks on AMOLED will always be darker than the blacks on LCD that uses backlighting. The blacks on amoled doesn't have light behind it so its gonna be darker, because there isn't a light source lighting up behind it. This comparison doesn't make sense. If you compare the GX2 any other LCD display on a phone it will out shine it hands down.

I am coming from a Vibrant and find the G2x display easier on the eyes. Yes the blacks looked better on the S-AMOLED but the colors are more natural on the G2x. However what I find to be most important is text look a lot better on the G2x display than the Vibrants Pentile display. I don't have to zoom in anymore to read text on webpages like I did with my Vibrant.
I have a thunderbolt and a nexus s also. The nexus s just sold on eBay. As previously stated you can not compare the blacks on a nexus s with the G2x, two totally different technologies. But compared to the thunderbolt the G2x shines. And the G2x has more clarity and better whites. When compared to the nexus s. G2x has great viewing angles. Over all a great screen, once you get past the back light bleeding.

I got these in stock today and after playing around with it I was impressed by the sharpness of the screen - when you zoom into the text it is very similar to the iPhone 4. The SLCD is definitely better than a traditional LCD screen.
I still prefer the bigger screen on the Galaxy S II and the screen just looks so much nicer. The Super Amoled Plus technology is far superior to the SLCD in my opinion.

I think it wasn't about him preferring a screen over the other but about calling it BIGGER when they are both 4.3"
Yes, they have a different area due to aspect ratios but lets face it, the difference is almost negligible and many people don't even understand the difference, they just understand 4.3

Yes and no. Larger area=definitely
Wider=yes
Longer=no
Remember, the more square a quadrilateral the greater the area for the same diagonal. But some people don't see that.
And as I said, some people don't look past the 4.3" or only focus on one of the dimensions. I didn't say he was right in his comment, just that I didn't think he was bashing on Stesa for liking the Samsung screen more, but rather because his statement of a larger screen APPEARS to be frivolous if you only consider the 4.3 (though Stesa is perfectly correct in saying it is bigger).
Its a personal preference, I have Nexus One and love the Amoled Screen, I have seen SAMOLED and SAMOLED + u wont see a lot of difference except brightness when going from Nexus One. Also OLED isnt really a mature tech yet, It needs a lot of generations to reach a perfectly good place. Has many issues right now though it looks beautiful

Screen washed out on Sensation?

I am deliberating on whether to get a refund or ask for a replacement. Along with overheating(or just getting a little too warm) and reboots(twice a screen has come up and stated that "the device has done an improper reset please send info on to HTC) and non responsive screens and lags(My G2x has some of those too.) I now have noticed that the screen on my Sensation is really washed out. I put it on the same live wallpaper on the sensation as the G2X and it just looks really washed out on the Sensation. The viewing angle is extremely small. It reminds me of theMT4G fiasco a while back. I really do like the Sensation and I can put up with the battery running hot etc. but not with washed out screen. Has anyone else had this issue? I am looking for reasons to get a replacement and not just turn it in for a refund. The Sensation is sweet in many areas but I just cannot tolerate a washed out screen. I had the G2x and went through 4 of them before I got a screen that was tolerable. I do not want to go through that again. Any and all input and info is appreciated.
I have compared my Sensation side by side with my G2X to see the difference in screen and I would hardly call the sensation "washed out". The G2X screen is slightly brighter but that's about all the difference I really see. It sounds like (and no offense is intended with this statement) you're one of those people that are going to find a reason to have a complaint. I don't mean that to be offensive I mean that to say, the screen is what it is. If you feel like the screen is washed out, then there is no need for you to waste Sensations that other people could be getting. Just return it and move on to another phone.
doesn't G2X have IPS screen? It's kinda like comparing apple with orange there, you just can't compare the awesome viewing angle (170degree-ish?) on IPS screen with Super LCD.
The screen to me seems washed out, but NOT in comparison to other LED panels, but rather the fact that I was using a galaxy s before and not used to a back light on my phone.
After using it a few days out it hasn't driven me nuts like it has, and I know the only phone that I may like the screen on is the galaxy s2, and that's just the deep blacks, and I prefer the cool color temp vs the warm I notice on this phone.

Yes, I had terrible touch and unlock issues, after moving back to sense and unnstalling it has been fine. For about a week now.
Many HTC phones have the issue where there are Good/Bad screens, hope that is the only problem it has and hopefully no Bad Emmc Chips like on Current htc phones.
I have the Sensation and Galaxy S II here and head-on the difference isn't that huge.
Obviously the colours pop more on the AMOLED and the blacks are very deep, but to be honest I wasn't disappointed with the screen on the Sensation, its certainly sharper, which counts for a lot.
If you look from a tight angle the screen does look extremely washed out, but in real world use you probably are going to be looking at it head-on most of the time.
It could be worse on yours though and your phone could be faulty, so I'd get it replaced and see if the new one is an improvement.

I have experienced washed out screens with the HTC MT4G and after 4 I got one that was not washed out or had screen issues. If you check back in the MT4G thread you will see it was quite an issue and was widespread. I merely was attempting to see if others had the same issue or if it was just the way the screen is(head on fairly good, at an angle not good) so I could make an informed decision as to whether to just send it back or try one more. It appears(no offense intended) that you may be a fan boy who dislikes anyone bringing issues(or questions) to the forefront. I do not mean that to be offensive. I was not complaining but just gathering information concerning the screen so that I would not waste any of your Sensations. I am sure there will be more than enough to go around.

I find this extreamly hard to belive.
MANY PEOPLE who have the Desire S and the Inspire S have commented about how much worse the Screen on the Sensation is.
So then how can the SAMOLED screen not have a large difference when Comparing the Infuse (which has a crappier quality SAMOLED screen then the GS2) is a HUGE improvement over the Inspire 4g ?

You can believe what you like. There is no doubt that the SAMOLED screen is the best around (except maybe for the iPhone screen), but the Sensation screen is perfectly acceptable. The benefits of it are the extra resolution which is very noticeable in portrait operation and it is generally sharper and smaller text is much easier on the eye.
The Sensation has worse viewing angles than the non qHD SLCD screens, but head-on there is nothing wrong with it at all. I don't think most people are going to be too concerned about what the screen looks like at a fairly harsh angle. I'm certainly not. If you are, you want AMOLED.
Actually, I find the viewing angles really strange on this phone. I find that in some cases the screen actally performs better slightly off from a perpendicular angle.
For example, when viewing video in landscape on HTC watch. Dead on, the contrast is not great in dark scenes and detail is hard to make out (particularly in faces), but rotated a couple of degrees up or down is much better. I find that lowering the backlight (or using auto-backlight) makes things better for landscape video - note that the battery saver feature likes to disable auto brightness and neglects to re-enable it (i would not be surprised if this is to blame for many people reporting washed out colours, due to backlight being stuck at full power)
I'm not saying the screen is bad - it most certainly is not - but the incredible s has much better (but lower res) screen viewing angles. However, compared to the UK Desire HD screen (which is stardard lcd), the sensation screen is infinitely better.

What he said is absolutely correct. There is not much difference. If you compare them side by side you will see what he means. But yes he is correct.
I've had a MyTouch 4g with the crappy Sharp screen and a Mytouch 4G with the superb Sony screen. The Sensation screen, as far as viewing angles go, is between the two. It's a good screen, but not as good as they Sony screen in the MyTouch. The G2X has better angles and better colors (the G2X is actually a very nice screen, save for uniform black levels) but the Sensation has uniform blacks! I returned my G2X because of the light bleed and so far I'm very pleased with the sensation.

Maybe the Sensation having a higher resolution balances out the viewing angle. Here's something I just read earlier today in the engadget review of the Sensation:
In our review of the Galaxy S II, we opined that though its display was of superlative quality, its pixel density left a little something to be desired. The Sensation gives us that extra flourish with a 960 x 540 resolution (35 percent more pixels than on Samsung's 800 x 480 panel) on a Super LCD screen that fails to match the vivid output or viewing angles of its Super AMOLED Plus competitor, but at least maintains a similarly hyperbolic naming scheme. There are two significant advantages to moving up to qHD resolution. The first and most tangible is that you get more of everything: Gmail displays more missives, the browser fits more of your favorite blog's content at a time, the calendar includes more agenda items, and you get to see more of your contacts without having to scroll (11 on the Sensation versus 9 on the WVGA Incredible S screen). Additionally, though the user interface sticks to the standard 16 grid slots for your icons and widgets, having them all in higher resolution lends an extra layer of visual polish, if nothing else. The camera and gallery apps benefit from having more dots to display your compositions and resulting images.
...
In terms of the Sensation's output quality, it merits noting that in spite of its 4.3-inch display bearing the same branding as the 4- and 3.7-inch ones on the Incredible S and Desire S, it is not up to the same standard. Viewing angles are the first giveaway, as they're nowhere near as expansive on the Sensation. At 45 degrees away from center, the Sensation's picture washes out, whereas the Incredible S maintains color fidelity until laid almost flat. Additionally, the smaller handset is brighter and better saturated than its newcomer buddy. None of this is to say that HTC has installed a poor LCD on the Sensation, we'd just refrain from calling it a Super one. As to our running tally against the Galaxy S II, the Sensation wins out on resolution, but loses by a big margin when it comes to quality and the sheer feeling of luxury that the GSII provides.

Which has a better screen? S4G or G2X?

Currently have a g2x but thinking about getting the sensation. Which has the better screen?
Imo the g2x has a better screen
I like the Sensations display a lot better for the fallowing reasons:
1.Direct sunlight performance is much much better that the G2X. Probably the best I've ever seen.
2. It's bigger and can fit more on the screen along with making it easier to type.
3. The RESOLUTION. Text is so much more clear and crisp that when I go back to my G2X after using my Sensation, everything looks fuzzy on the G2X. Also the higher resolution puts more on the display.
4. Colors are brighter and more vibrant. Not as vibrant as a super AMOLED but pretty dank close.
The only categorie the G2X wins is viewing from a angle. The Sensation washes out pretty quick on angle viewing but straight on, its nice
My advice to you would be to take your G2X to the store and hold it next to the Sensation. Make sure both displays are cranked up to full brightness.

Obviously its just personal preference as that's a very subjective question.
That said....the screen on the Sensation in the MAIN reason I switched from my G2x to this.
4.3" SLCD with qHD res and an awesome 16:9 aspect ratio.
As far as REALISTIC viewing angles....this is perfect. Im not often laying flat on the floor with my phone 5 feet away trying to use it....
After owning both phones, I knew I wanted to look at this screen everyday for the next 2 years....

Off topic for sec... The still cam quality is debatable.
Do keep in mind one very important fact.
The Sensation does 1080p @ 30fps in STEREO.
The G2x does 1080p @ 24fps in MONO.
HUGE difference in quality for people who use the camcorder a lot....as do I.
Now back to the topic at hand....

Off topic for sec... The still cam quality is debatable.
Do keep in mind one very important fact.
The Sensation does 1080p @ 30fps in STEREO.
The G2x does 1080p @ 24fps in MONO.
HUGE difference in quality for people who use the camcorder a lot....as do I.

you beat me to it.
THIS. also had to do with my switch. Sensation performs much better than g2x in terms of graphics quality. just too much damn bloatware
I have to agree with the consensus. Qhd really makes quite a big difference. Now if you asked which screen do I like better, SGS2 versus Sensation I would say I don't know.

I like the Sensations display a lot better for the fallowing reasons:
Yea you Lost it side by side g2x kills this sensation that's in my left hand what are you looking at ???? Im even starting to think its not even qhd not to be funny because my atrix is qhd and it owns the sensation qhd screen.

Wifey has the Vibrant
which I imagine is comparable to the GS2 in quality.
No question, I've been spoiled by the Sensation's qHD. I'm an avid book reader on my smartphones, and the extra pixels seem to make a big difference, not to mention real estate on web pages.
The blacks on wife's phone does seem to still be blacker, but I'd rather have the extra pixels.

You talk about quality, but the microphone on the Sensation is almost unbearable! Where's the quality in that? Who gives a **** if it's stereo vs. mono if it's unpleasant to listen to in the first place?

A problem with every htc phone I've had. Galaxy s and iPhone has the best sound recording.
The issue is, if I recall correctly, that HTC uses a low quality audio codec to record with. Called amr or something like that

Define "better".
I agree with previous posters about the qHD screen. However the G2x's super amoled screen is brighter and has more contrast which makes it better for games and anything with a simple color scheme. But you can't beat the Sensation's screen for movies and TV - the 16:9 aspect ratio and more natural color rendition are an unbeatable combination.

UPDATE: The G2X screen is LCD IPS, not Super AMOLED. (Thanks, jlevy73 and greengoldmello!)

The Mic is fine?
Sounds great on my 7.1 surround HTPC.
The G2x records in mono and it was obvious.
It's plenty good enough quality. Something must wrong with your Mic.
People have commented that it sounds like I'm on a landline when on a call.
Great quality.
Maybe your Mic holes are covered by a case? I don't doubt its crappy on your device....not mine though. Think of it this way ...better to have stereo craps, than mono crap.

G2x uses LCD. The Nexus S and original SGS use super amoled. The SGS2 uses super amoled plus.

The g2x does not have a super amoled screen...no phone out Samsung does. It has an ips LCD, which is a better tech than slcd in my opinion. If the g2x has the same resolution and screen size then it wouldn't even be a competition.

How does display compare to Amaze

I have a chance to ge tthis phone but I am worried about the display. The display on the Amaze 4G is clear and crisp but I read the opposite about the One S. Can someone that used both phones tell me how they compare.
I currently own the one s and I've had the amaze ill tell you this, the amazes display as far as pixels go is really good but as for saturation etc everything looks washed out especially in sunlight. The one s has the amoled which has richer colors. Doesn't have as much pixels as the amaze but it doesn't bother me.

The Amaze screen didn't look washed out to me. So quality wise what do you think? Does the less pixels make a noticeable difference? I always found amoled to have some over saturated colors. Is it the same on this phone?
I used an Amaze for a little while and I think I prefer the screen on the One S. The Amaze does look washed out to me compared to the Super AMOLED screen on the One S. Colors just look brighter on the One S, and black is pure black on the One S. Text looks a little better on the Amaze due to the pentile screen on the One S, but otherwise I prefer the One S screen. They are both qHD screens by the way. Same number of pixels. It's the sub-pixel arrangement that is different.
I just sold my Amaze, the screen on the one s is amazing for being amoled. its the first one that ive seen with true whites

I agree. I had a Galaxy Nexus and the whites on it were an off white and kind of grainy like paper. The One S does not have this problem.
Yup that's why I love amoled

I like the screen a lot, I can see the pentile matrix if I try, but it doesn't bother me at all. Still, white isn't really white. If I look at it from the front it has some redish color thingy it seems. If I look at it from the side it looks more like clear white. It doesn't bother me at all, though

Please explain how the One S does not have as much pixels as the Amaze considering both have a qHD screen. I suspect you meant to say that the One S has a pentile screen. Taking the time to double-check your "facts" is the best way to answer a question.

Ok thanks. I decided against the One S due to the non-replaceable battery and no SD card slot.
I have the One S, my wife has the Amaze. Though I love her phone (compared to her previous MyTouch 4G), the screen on the One S (IMHO) blows the Amaze away. The colors are incredibly vibrant on the One S. I came from the Galaxy S (which I feel also has a rich, deep screen) and the One S trumps it with ease.
That being said... Take my opine with a grain of salt. I thought the screen on the Galaxy S was better than the Amaze...
