Tune-in radio generating lots of heat? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
Usually listen to tune-in radio app and set the timer to shut off automatically. I am usually asleep by then. Tonight I was still awake when tune-in turned off, and I picked up my phone and it was super hot.
Now I am concerned that I am gonna damage my NS listening to tune-in. Is there anything that I can do to reduce the amount of heat it is generating?

Hi Heeter,
Have the same issue running Tune-in on my HTC One X .... yours thread is over a year old but it's the only one I could find on this topic, just wondering if you ever found a resolution ?
Thanks!
Abytom.

Install CPU spy and see if the app is constantly running at Max CPU speed. This would cause much heat

I think my phone is overheating...

When I use the phone to play a game or web browse it starts to get really hot on the top half of the screen.

Is there anyway that I can to see if the phone is overheating/getting too hot?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
How hot is it getting? I'm pretty sure every smartphone experiences some kind of heat from gaming or streaming videos specially when you are charging it at the same time.

I mean just web browsing it is burning my hand. It only is the top half.

No and the phone does not get nearly as hot on wifi. Really odd. Also the phone was overcloaked before but I pushed it back to just 1ghz. My phone burning me for using the browder out is not cool though. Think there is an issue?

Well there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the device since you said you put it back to 1 ghz. Really odd if you ask me. Maybe its a battery problem? Sometimes defective batteries cause overheating and can explode.

It only gets hot when I use Japan too. Never on wifi. (Well it does a little playing games) I think I will call customer support tomorrow.

And it is not getting hot where the battery is.

I'd recommend you flash and reinstall the ROM on your phone. Sounds to me like you've still go some of the old performance updates kicking in making the device hotter!
For me your temperatures are pretty normal. When I am not gamimg my max was 91F!!

Since you claim to have been able to move around the CPU frequency, I assume you are running setCPU. In setCPU you can look at Info tab where under the battery header it also displays the battery tempt. It's normal for the phone to heat while you are charging, on call for long or gaming for long duration but if you are seeing absurdly high reading for the battery tempt, then you better have it checked.
Hmm I had a overheating issue last night, woke up to my phone making a loud noise - I had set setCPU to make a noise when it goes over 40C and it did this today in the early hours of the morning whilst it was charging.
No processes were running other than the normal Live Wallpaper, Keyboard etc.. The phone was quite hot to the touch as well, so I just turned it off.
Weird thing is I have another profile in setCPU to have the max freq at 800Mhz and lowest 100Mhz when the screen is off so don't know how it got so hot?

Saving battery life

Hi all.
Looking for some serious help. Coming from a Samsung vibrant. I need help with how to save battery life on the sensation. I have been off charger for 5 hours and 51 minutes and am down to 41%. Is this normal? I have been only texting really. I got my data from battery monitor.
Thanks in advance. Anyway to make this better?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
It all depends on what you're using the phone for. I'm at 55% after 12 hours. yesterday I got 17 hours. if all you're doing us texting then no,thats not normal. but I suspect you're probably doing more with it than you realize since its a new toy.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
He prolly has running wifi as well?
Settings > Wireless and networks > Wifi settings > [MENU BUTTON] > Advanced > Wifi sleep policy > After 15 minutes
Stop Android from phoning home and you'll save greatly on battery life.
Best way I've found to prevent battery drain, is to stop Android from phoning home.
Once you use an app like Autostarts to stop unnecessary things from starting up all the time on their own and also block a couple ports that are not always needed via an app like DroidWall, you'll see great battery life. Also see other details in that link of things I turned off to increase battery life amoung other benefits.
For now, I can only speak for seeing the difference while using a Nexus One ROM on my HD2, but I have way better battery life, GPS lock times and faster device boot ups than ever before.
This is yet another one of the reasons I must wait till the Sensation is rooted and unlocked. Because I'm not using it while it's running things I can't better manage, so they don't drain my battery.

How did u get that much? I have battery monitor as a widget. I also did not charge the phone all the way up when I first got it.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well to be honest for the 8 hours I'm at work, I use it light. texting, a few calls and about 30 minutes of reading pulse and playing games. However the next 8-9 hours I would consider moderate to heavy use. I have no monitors or anything running, just running straight out of the box.
I'm at 34% after 14.5 hours today.
I charged it fully the first day, ran it to 0, then charged it fully again last night.

Did draining it out help? It is really killing my battery. When my phone idles it loses about 7 percent an hour. Is this normal?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
Mine is at most 3% per hour so I would say check if you have any running apps that aren't supposed to be.
I suppose draining could have helped but I have no way of knowing for sure

Yeah I killed my battery in 12 hours with decent use and then charged to 88 had to go but now down to 35 three hours later ....thinking of draining battery and then charging

Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
I think mine's even worse. Phone was off charger at 100% at 11am, by 1:30PM it's already down to 80%ish. By 4PM it was down to 40%ish, got it charged up to about 70%ish around 6PM, by midnight I was around 6% again.
So I think I'm losing around 10%/hr. That's gotta be abnormal, and the battery gets really hot too. At the moment, I have several speculations:
1. Death grip causing the phone to work harder to find signal, and tmo's coverage kinda sucks in my town
2. I have defective unit/battery
3. Some apps behind the scene are killing it. But I've checked what's running behind, even turned off unnecessary stuff using autorun manager. Auto sync is turned of only for gmails. Weather, IMAP mails, pulse, facebook etc are set to pull in couple hrs instead hourly. The battery life cannot be worse than my 2-yr old HD2.
Hey guys. Have you considered bump charging. HTC advised the idea for the HTC desire battery and it in most cases doubles the battery.
Sorry I can't be more specific bit I'm on my phone. I have found the relevant link. Read the 1st post. I'm gonna do it when I get in from my gig.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712990
Bump charging kills the battery in long run.
If you have to do it to a brand new handset it can't be good news.

I'd suggest uninstalling battery monitor. I had installed it on my g2x and immediately saw my battery percentage drajning more quickly. Probably because its always running in the background.
The best tip I can give for better battery life is to minimize what you allow to run in the background. Get rid of any task killers, set Facebook/Twitter/Email/etc to sync less frequently, turn off wifi if you're not using it so its not scanning for networks, and so on.
Also install juice defender from the Market. Its free. It has greatly increased my battery life.

I installed the Plus version because it allows wifi control. I just use the default settings except I change so it doesn't disable wifi. I do that because I use wifi calling at home so I dont want Juice Defender turning off my wifi. I always turn it off manually when I leave the house anyway.

Yea Balanced Settings is good if you don't mind it managing your wifi too. In the Plus version I selected Customize instead of Balanced. The only thing I changed was the wifi setting. There's a ton more settings to configure but the default ones work fine for me and I don't have the patience to sift through them all anyway lol

yes, we all get hot and battery drops faster when this happens.
i think its the cpu governor and clockspeed.
if you put alot of apps on its prossess then it wil work faster, faster = frition. friction=hot. hot= battery drain at a faster rate. dead batt= xda question theads more threads= cramped order. cramped order= more cliick and seeing more ads. all us seeing more ads= more money for xda. xda=thrives off newbies

It's likely to heat up your phone when playing 3D games, using GPS an the like. Depends on what you are doing with the phone. Also, if you use OC it might get hotter than usual. If you think it's heating beyond any limits, try going back to stock for a couple of days, then if it does the same thing, consider hardware issues.
Is the screen getting warm even with minimal use? I had similar issues with cm7 once when I forgot to do my wipes.
Same with mine mate, few minutes on 3g with full brightness and u can start frying eggs on display screen.
I've found out that it's not happening when my brightness is adjusted at about 50%.
Just wondering how many of u, have set up their phones in auto-brightness mode, cuz i don't see to many post on this forum, regarding overheating issue with nexus s ...

I keep mine in auto-brightness, haven't had this problem.
That's strange, I'm running AOSP+ and Eugene's kernel, not overlocked or anything.
I found with some of these ROM using auto brightness just made it dim and go bright crazy. Either way. I found as bad as it sounds a fresh install the best thing. Titanium backup, sms restore, and then wipe everything clean. Solved all the hassles
Mine has gotten warm with heavy use since I got the phone.
If your running voodoo and have your gamma sliders boosted to hell and back, this also will make the phone run *quite* warm.

Bad Audio Quality. Cracks. Muddy bass. Pandora issues.

Hey, I'm loving everything about this phone besides it's audio. Like the title says, the bass is muddy and I hear random pops and cracks. Pandora also skips every third song or randomly stops regardless of data or WiFi connection. I'm coming from the Samsung captivate and haven't had these issues.
Pandora is the app I use most which is pretty frustrating. Anyone know any kind of fix or having similar problems?

i don't have any of the audio issues. pandora does suck pretty badly. like you said, every third song (sometimes every other song) will just pause and 'buffer' forever.
could be a pandora/ICS issue or a pandora/one x issue, don't know which, though

I'm guessing your battery is less than 40% in which case the HOX goes in to a pretty aggressive power saving scheme.

It's well known if you do the advanced power menu mod you can see for yourself. For instance - the phone operates on single core only and that one core is downclocked to 1ghz max. Aggressive enough for you? Run a benchmark at 50% battery and then the same benchmark at 25% battery....
Huh that's kinda crazy to know thanks. Kinda piss me off though restricting our phones cores etc....
Beaups that's some crazy info but considering how fast this phone is, I won't worry about it. But yeah, the mem management is crazy.
I just tried out the iHeartRadio app which seems like Pandora with more features. So far the audio seems way better and it hasn't skipped or randomly paused a song yet and this is on data. This may be my new go to app.

Can install GSam battery monitor for free. Nice to see battery info in the drop down notification screen and will tell you how hot the battery is. People can have different "opinions" on the definition of hot but this way will give you an actual number. Under heavy use my device gets to 97 degree F. Believe that is the highest i've seen it get so far. Will try and play some dead trigger 2 for a solid 15min or so and check battery temp, that will get it high if anything else would!
I can say though coming from an HTC One X+ with overclocked Tegra 3 chip, that phone got up to 120 degrees F, that is freaking hot! Not a bunk device, just made with poor design as the Tegra 3 chip was never made for mobile devices, especially overclocked. Got in over my head with that device!
My silver model gets toasty with moderate use. My brothers grey is always ice cold though.

Well according to the battery monitor my phone was dropping voltage ridiculously high so I'm going to install a battery monitor and keep an eye on it and see if I can duplicate the problem I'm still not sure what it was but I do know that I was in an area that should have had 4G in the highest setting I got was 3G not sure if that causes an issue or not but it's something I'll keep an eye out

I can tell my phone will get slightly warm after some use but nothing crazy.
I have the grey model and it definitely gets warm after some heavy use. I was slightly disappointed by this because I remember reviews said it would never get even remotely warm. Its about on par with how warm my M7 got. I definitely wouldn't say it gets too hot to the point where I couldn't keep it in my hand for an extended period of time though.
I know I said that mine stays cool. With heavy use like gaming while charging, it gets a little warm, however no where near the level the lumia icon got. I'd have to put that brick down every 10 min or so and let it cool because it got to hot to touch.
