Is there a way to get the Motorola Droid stock dialer onto the Thunderbolt without rooting?
If not, do I just need to root and replace the following on the Thunderbolt from the Droid:
/system/app/Phone.apk
/system/app/Phone.odex
Or is there more to it?
Can I do the same for Contacts?
Thanks,
Chris
I know this probably isn't the most helpful answer, but a lot of the custom roms that are de-sensed have the AOSP dialer (the same one the original Droid has). If you're going to root, look into custom roms. A lot of them will tell you what dialer they have.

I would NOT replace it with the file from the droid. I would yank one out of a TB ROM and flash it on yours. But as suggested before, I would try out a complete ROM with the AOSP dialer. And to do any of that, you need to root

This might be a kind of noob-ish request, but I'm trying to avoid rooting (I know, I know) and wondered if there was a way to port over the dialer-contacts in APK form from 2.3.
I would appreciate any help/guidance.
Did anything change in the dialer between Froyo and Gingerbread?
Took these off my Nexus S. Not sure if they'll work but here you go!

Be careful. Make a backup of the original apks first (or a full nandroid backup) . if they don't work, they're likely to cause the system to crash-loop (continuous FCs). Happened too me when trying a moded phone.apk before.
Aren't the dialers the same, I didn't notice any differences apart from the look, from froyo and now on gingerbread

Thanks for the fast response, but I'm getting a parse error trying to install the APKs.
To everyone else: I'm mostly trying to get something more like AOSP over the stock HTC stuff, and most of what I've found on here is stuff designed to flash on top of ROMs for rooted phones.
Is there anyway to just get the regular android keyboard like what the original Droid had?
You would have to root your phone and use a custom rom. I'm using gummyjar right now and it has a lot of things from the original Droid, including the keyboard.

Thanks a lot for the info.
I'm coming from the original Droid (with cm7) to the thunderbolt. Along with many others i am patiently awaiting cyanogenmod for this device...
Until then, is there any way to install the default contacts/messaging/phone/calendar/email apks? I tried pulling them from the sdk and installing... That didn't work so well...
Thanks in advance.
from what i have heard (haven't confirmed personally) if you disable sense they're all there, just now showing since sense is the "default". otherwise, the .apk is around somewhere to install via SD card. try some google-fu on megaupload yet?

Same here, I miss default messaging the most. Can't wait for CM7!
I managed to install the old CarHome.apk and the old Email.apk so... its a start in the right direction. Contacts.apk, Phone.apk & Mms.apk were all a no go. Maybe something to do with the 4G? I just want a clean rom... non of this "nonSense"
Hello all. I appreciate all of the custom roms out there. I agree withe the fact that the touchwiz ui uses garish colors, but the additions actually tend to improve on android's functionality, unlike other skins lime motoblur. Does anyone have a copy of the stock calendar apk. It seems that gummy rom got rid of it and all the roms based on gummy don't have it. I would really appreciate it.
I would like it as well. Would some one be kind enough to post it and tell how to install it?
I like the stock calendar as well.
+1

I can attach the apk's from the deodexed EE4 version...but I dont know how to install them correctly. I keep trying to get them to work but have no clue. If someone can get them to work please let me know?
I have tried deleting the original apk's via root explorer and putting these in there place with no luck
I wish I had a way to install this. I really prefer it.

Are you sure that it is the stock calendar? I have the latest GummyCharged but still can not find the stock calendar in the apps.

I just copied the apps you have posted in the system/app folder and they work. My Calender now finally syncs with gummy chccharged 1.9.1.
Thanks for posting the apps.

What would be involved in porting one of the Optimistic V (or other Optimistic One variants) really awesome ROMs to the LG Vortex (which is Verizion's version of the Optimums One) ?
My old Vortex is just sitting around and I wanna learn how to make ROMs. It can't be too hard to get a ROM working on it, the only difference is the radio, as far as I can tell, and that would be just replace some files, right?
So I'm hoping someone who knows a lil more than me can tell me what I need to change to make a ported ROM off someone's Optimistic One variant source.
ANYONE? not a hard question....
Not a hard question??? What do YOU think is involved. porting to a completely new phone AOSP or whatever is way harder than you think. You need to compile from source to get a fully working rom. I cannot do this but you should try first messing around. You don't even have CWM on the Vortex, so you should go and ask that first...

You can port different kinds of Rom to your phone which are cdma-based.
If you use your stock kernel roms should boot (can't say anything about data/wifi/gsm)
If you want to build your own, look here for a base.
And don't forget to backup your rom! It has different libs you may need to use!
You can find CWM for your phone here!
You'll also find a CM7 for your phone to play with
Good luck!

Actually, there is a custom recovery. And the hardware is identical to other optimus one variants, except for the radios. So there should be files that correspond to ththe radios that need to be replaced. Now I've never built a ROM before, just tinkered with one, but I don't expect it to be THAT hard to swap out a few files, maybe recompile the kernel.

There are several other CDMA Optimus One variants, I know they're available for sprint and virgin at least. If I keep the stock Verizon kernel how I change a sprint/virgin ROM to be compatible?
Its very easy, just go into the build.prop and change everything that calls for vm670 and change it to vs660 and do the same in the updater script. You'll be able to flash it and use it, but data, calling and sms wont work , you need to swap the telephony files from the same android version, I'm currently porting JB to the vortex
