[Q] Couple Q's from a new Infuse user - Samsung Infuse 4G

Just got my Infuse today (coming from an iPhone). Immediately rooted, unlocked and installed CW Recovery.
Couple quick questions.
#1) How do I get the damned <OPTION/HOME/PREV/SEARCH> bar to stay lit up? It is driving me nuts. It goes out in like 2 seconds after I have touched it. No idea why they did that.
#2) Internal SD vs the microSD card. When I connect via USB MASS STORAGE I don't see any of the folders that I KNOW are on it (Titanium Backup and some others). Are there limitations as to what can be saved on the external SD card?
#3) How do I get ClockworkMod to save backups to the external SD card and not the internal card?
#4) I thought this had SWYPE keyboard option. Can't seem to find it. Never mind! Found SWYPE
Thanks!

you cant control the hard key backlights. when you hit the screen or one of the buttons, theyll light up. my dell streak had a different behavior, turning on only when you hit the actual buttons (not the screen) and staying on for 10 seconds. its just what the hardware is set to do. are you plugging your phone into a mac? i noticed on my macs, itll double up one of the sd cards until you eject that one then you can read and write to the other. i dont have this problem in windows. theres not limitations to the file system except for the 4gb max file size (fat32).

Wow, is that annoying. I either hit the wrong dark button and end up at "HOME" or touch the screen and screw up something else or touch a button and change the volume. Sometimes ya wonder who designed these things. I'm sure those buttons use very little power.
As for the SD issue the problem is folders on the EXTERNAL SD CARD created by for one example Titanium Backup are not visible unless I turn on USB DEBUGGING. If I use it as mass storage they don't show up. Other folders do the same. Hard to explain but I have figured it out and it another strange behavior.
Using a Win7 PC not a Mac.

Keep the Lights On will allow your capacitive touch keys to stay lit. It's still a bit buggy since it hasn't been updated for the Infuse; sometimes the backlights will stay on even after you turn the screen off.

^^
Thanks! There's an app for that!
Edit: Doesn't work very well ..... but it's better than nothing.

If someone ever gets BLN kernel mods working properly this might be more easily tunable from userland. However so far all BLN porting attempts have resulted in bugginess.
I might look into seeing if the timeout can be tweaked up a little as an interim solution. (Depends on if it's userland or kernel. If it's kernel I can probably tweak it, if it's userland someone else will have to do it.)

That sounds promising. I find this "feature" is really a dumb-ass design and probably the most annoying thing I have found (so far) in my first 48hrs with this device.

#1 Some phones have the option, some don't. Check the system settings or third party apps. I know the Samsung Galaxy SII has the option to change the duration of the lights, so check that out.
#2 You need a true file explorer, not just going through it in windows. Root Explorer is great on the infuse (or any android for that matter) and is worth the $5. It lets you truly go through the entire phone.
#3 I'm pretty sure CWM only backs up internal, but I'm not sure. Try using titanium and moving your data to the internal, and then backing it up that way.
#4 Long press on an empty text field and a menu should pop up. Tap "Input Method" and then you can select which keyboard you want to use. Swype is great btw

constantly closing programs

I constantly have to go through 3-4 screens before the 750 gets back to my today screen from startup. For instance, I look at my phone and it has the calendar screen on it, close it and the contact edit screen is up, and so on until finally after clicking through 3-4 unwanted screens I can finally use the phone.
Memory does not recognize. Have 1 gig that won't ever recognize and 2 gig that is hit or miss depending on my treos mood. Who'da thought that windows could program personalities into their rom's?
Anybody else have issues like these? Normally I soft reset and that doesn't last. Thought I had something contacting the screen under the phone plastics but not that either.
I did figure out a good way to clean the internals... Blow through the memory card slot. Cleans out the keyboard and everything.
THanks.
You can go to today screen just by pressing the red end button or the green button. Or alternatively press Start>Today. Don't need to close those programs.
Can't help you with unrecognizable memory card. I don't have that problem.
Just curious, what's your ROM version (Start>Setting>System>About>Phone)? Do you use WM5 or WM6?

[Q] VEGAn Observations/Questions

Naturally I bought a g Tablet Saturday and Woot has them today for almost $100 less! Oh well. Big big big improvement from my old FlyTouch2 which was a great idea poorly executed.
Immediately flashed VEGAn with supplements etc. All working VERY well but a few questions/observations.
1) If I wanted to hook this up to a USB or Bluetooth modem (well, actually a BlackBerry) it looks like there is no setup for this? Yes, I know if I could find a way to make the BB broadcast WiFi but its corporate so that's a nonstarter.
2) When I hold down the power button, the menu that comes up it clipped off at the bottom. Is that normal?
3) Screen lock on Kindle software is not getting the accelerometer fix somehow. The trick was to put the thing in portrait UPSIDE DOWN and lock the screen. That caused it to lock it 180 degrees off. But then when it is locked you can go back to right side up (to me, right side up is with the buttons to the top). Of course, if you want to lock it another way you have to experiment.
4) Camera Fun shows camera upside down. No big deal -- again accelerometer I think.
5) Sometimes I am sure the machine is asleep and when I turn it on it is booting from the birds screen. Anyone else seeing this?
6) I don't understand the .nomedia thing although I've read a lot about it. I don't seem to get files erased, but nothing shows up in Video. But if I navigate to the folder (on /mnt/sdcard2) and play videos that's fine. Then later the files will show up in video. Whoops spoke to soon. Now they are gone. What's up with that?
7) My old tablet had GPS but without the external antenna it was worthless. But it still managed to find rough location with WiFi somehow. I assume by figuring out the geographic location of the IP. That doesn't seem to work on this machine. Yes Use Wireless networks is checked in Location and security.
8) What's with the little plastic cover? How hard is it to take out? I don't want a little rubber dingle rolling around inside.
8) In System Preferences, About Device | Status consistently crashes.
9) Does the audio jack support a headset or just headphones? Yeah I know -- I could just try it.
If it matters I'm using Launcher Pro.
Still and all the VEGAn ROM is superb. Compared to the FlyTouch this is super fast, the screen is a joy, and the battery life wonderful. And with the woot deal only about $80 more than a FlyTouch2.
Ok I'll answer some of my own questions:
5) I think this is the unresponsive power button problem. If you press and wait it seems ok. If you press, get impatient and press again you might reboot.
9) No, at least not with a Blackberry headset.
Most of these are answered on the forum somewhere, but I'll give it a shot..

I get this sometimes, too. It is a known issue, and there may be solutions out there... I just deal with it.

Known issue.
These aren't much help (maybe reassurance?)
1) Pretty sure it's wifi only. Have trawled the internet looking for a usb or bluetooth alternative because wifi hammers the phone battery
2) It happens on mine as well, so it's not just you
5) Same here - I just turn it off when not in use now
7) Only GPS functionality seems to come with the need for an external GPS unit
8) Think this is normal
(Re reading above, it looks like I'm negative re VEGAn - this is not the case. It is way better than what came standard and does everything I need it to do)
Yeah I like it too. Haven't tried the others, but very satisfied with Vegan.
Another observation: Long pressing the Menu button (hardware) brings up the keyboard. However, long pressing the menu button on the status bar does NOT have that behavior.
Clemsyns newest kernel will fix sleep issues. Also has some other great improvements too.
Buttons on status bar do not respond to long presses. Home doesn't bring up its usual long press of recent apps either. Funny, i Never even tried long press on status bar keys before now.
Sent from my Chromatic Magic using XDA Premium App
I have Pershoot's kernel. I'll try changing. I presume I shouldn't need to clear too many things in CWM after flashing a kernel. Maybe the Dalvik cache?

how do you view your streams?

hey guys quick questions on my tf700
1. how do you view your movies ? on netflix and hulu i cant see it full screen and its annoying to have the status bar and the home buttons still on screen
2. how are you rebooting your tablet ? i can only just turn mine off then go ahead and turn it back on. is there a software reboot i can do
3. in android in general how can i chose where to save something. it always just goes to intenral downloads and i really need certain things to go to the micro sd card straight away
1) that's just how those apps are designed. Netflix has no stop button, so you need those buttons. Unfortunately, Netflix hasn't designed it to bring up those when you bring up Netflix controls. First tablet, so I'm not sure how these apps worked on them. Plus, a lot of stuff is designed for Android 4 which is phone and tablet, and most phones have a least one hard navigation button.
2) That's one way to do it. You could just hold the power button longer till it shuts off. ASUS designed that as one way to reboot. There may be an app or something in the Playstore. But I was perturbed enough to bother looking.
3) I haven't found anything in settings for this. Maybe something like App2SD may be possible solution. I either save to SD if the app lets me or I transfer files using a file manager such as ES File Explorer.

Encrypt Galaxy Tab 2 7", ICS 4.0.3, CF-Auto-Root?

One of the first things I did on buying my new Galaxy Tab 2 7" (GT-P3100, Wi-Fi and 3G; Spanish market "PHE" identifier, came with ICS 4.0.3, no updates available either through Kies nor OTA) was to encrypt the Device. It worked.
Then I rooted the device with CF-Auto-Root, which had the side effect of performing a factory reset, and as I understand it from a brief conversation with the author of (the excellent!) CF-Auto-Root this was an expected side-effect of the device having been encrypted at the time of applying CF-Auto-Root.
So, the Tab 2 is back to un-encrypted.
Here are the details:
Android 4.0.3
Baseband version 3.0.8-CL448962-user [email protected] #1
Build number IML74K.P3100XWALD2
But now I'm trying to encrypt again (either/both the SD Card and the Device itself) and I'm having no success at all.
On trying to encrypt the SD card, each time it always returns "SD Card Encryption Error" within a few seconds. (And indeed thereafter I always get a Notification about "SD card encryption error" any time the SD card is mounted by the device). If I go back to Settings -> Security -> Encrypt SD card and select to decrypt the card (even though it's not really encrypted), then I can access the SD Card again - no damage was done (and no encryption either).
If I try to encrypt the Device, I get the black background with the large green outline android, and ... nothing. The green android on the black background just stays there. After the normal screen timeout, the screen goes completely blank; I tap the power button, get the usual unlock screen, unlock it, see the green android again ... and, nothing. If I rotate the tablet, the android rotates. If I tap the power switch, I get the silent/ flightmode/ reboot/ turnoff menu. But nothing will get me back to the normal user interface, and it never finishes encrypting (I really think it never starts).
Eventually (after more than a couple of hours) I give up, tap the power switch and select to reboot, and it comes back up fine, but not encrypted.
One of my main reasons for getting the newer device was to have encryption :-/
Is Encryption (Device, and SD Card) supported/ functional when CF-Auto-Root is in use on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (Android 4.0.3)?
How do I get encryption to work, for both the Device and the SD Card?
Is there a way to get more detailed logging (the Tab is rooted, and I have command line access) and/or to command the encryption from the command line, to see what's really happening?
Thanks!
Hm, I tried encrypting only NEW files on the SD Card now, and that seems to work.
I stored a new file on the SD Card, unmounted the card from the Tab, put the card in a card reader on a desktop computer, and indeed the contents of that file are just "data", not readable. Back in the Tab, the contents are the picture which I'd saved to the card.
But still attempting to encrypt the existing files on the SD Card fails. And still attempting to encrypt the device does nothing (green android appears, but no % complete ever displays, etc, just as I posted before).
One step further with the external SD Card; I copied off all of the data, formatted the card, and then was able to fully encrypt it (and copy back my data).
But the Device itself, I still can't encrypt at all - just the same as before.
No ideas? None? Nobody? Please....?
Thanks,
-Jay
Bump?
sigh
Try the same thing with the device itself.
Do a factory reset.
Not once,twice.
I know u lose all data.
But try it.
And do this without android to start.
Keep press power+vol up.
Get into menu and do factory reset, wipe dalwik...all.
Hope this help.

This was over a year ago, and I don't even use the device anymore. Sorry, can't help.
I've since then tried a ZTE "Skate Pro" (the Movistar Spain branding of the "Blade III"). Piece of Sh*t phone. Support encryption natively under Android 4.0.4, but if you do encrypt the phone, the performance of the touch screen becomes unreliable, frequently so bad that swiping (including Swyping) actions don't work right, and you end up less moving things on the screen and more, effectively, tapping things you absolutely did not intended to tap. I discarded the ZTE Skate Pro/ Blade III.
Then I tried a Haier W708, dirt cheap; not a powerhouse, but satisfatory.
And a Nexus 5 which kicks *ss all over the place.
I can't help any more with this thread, and any results in this thread would not longer help me, so I'm dropping off the thread now.
Best of luck to all.

[Q] Are Reboot Utilities safe?

Whenever I turn off or reboot my phone from the ROM's power menu the system takes a second or two to close apps and then turns off. While the reboot utilities turn off the OS the moment I press the reboot/power off option on the menu.
Are these utilities safe to use as they seem be like yanking the power cord off of a running device?
(I'm on 5.0 preview and the power menu is limited to just Power Off for now, and I'd like convenient options to go to recovery/bootloader, but not at the cost of corrupting OS files, thanks)

Not really. I didn't give you a useful answer. I didn't know the answer the first time I read the thread. You're right that it needs to unmount the filesystems cleanly when shutting down, but whether that's what is happening when you shut down via the power menu that causes the delay I don't know
I use the "reboot" command all the time though, and I haven't lost any data yet
Yeah it usually works safe enough, but I vaguely remember an year or so back on my N4 it created some problem, and I stopped using any abrupt reboots. Stopping to use those was easy on custom ROMs anyway.
The logic is sound. If there's some file activity going on, an abrupt reboot will cause file system corruption - hell we use safely remove on USB drives too, this is a whole computer.
