I am totally new to rooting, well, android in general, and have a little question, noobish I know, but I was wondering can someone explain what 'su' is and also what busy box is and what it does.
I have looked at the dev form and there is a 'perma-temp-root' that I am looking into trying out, but I dont know what these 2 things are or what they do...
Thanks
I think su is for superuser & is for root & you're using the sdk to mess with your phone. I may be wrong though.
Usually...if you don't feel comfortable with something regarding root, don't do it.
And as for answering the questions, Google is your friend...

Hi all,
First post here, be gentle.
I am a linux user (pretty noob but learning) and I'm a bit confused about what I've been reading on rooting android. I'm looking at getting a Droid X and I'm just trying to understand things before I dive in (already running 1.6 as a VM to play with it).
As far as I can tell--my bash skills not being quite good enough to completely understand everything in the rooting wikis--the methods employed to gain root access to a phone (from: wiki link) use an external OS to push image files onto the phone, then remove the native rights management files (mid.txt?) and replace them with something else in the pushed files. (Please correct me if I'm wrong, cause I probably am)
When completed, this presumably allows you to run su and changes the root password or removes it (though I have no idea how that would work). If this is the case, and I root my phone does this mean that my default login to new sessions will be as root, or will I have to run su to gain privileges? And if I have to run su, what's the password?
One of the first things I learned when getting into linux was that root can be dangerous--you can kill your computer etc.--so, what does this mean for my phone? Can I just login as an admin and then sudo for the apps that need it? (Yes, I realize that I would have to install sudo and edit the list of sudoers etc.) Is it not dangerous to run as root or it it dangerous but easily ignored?
I'm just curious about this because it seems funny to me that a lot of joe shmos who have no idea what they're unleashing by running as root might suddenly hear that it's a great idea to go into a terminal and run
Code:
#rm -rf /
and I have this desperate hope that it's not as simple as that and there is some kind of rights management still in effect once a phone is "rooted." If not, and rooting a phone really does log you in as root for every session then it's much more dangerous than I had thought.
Thanks,
Bob
Is there really no one here who can answer this?
My phone is coming on Wednesday and I'd love some help with this and I can't believe that one of the brilliant people here can't answer this.
Sorry nobody replied yet. When you root there is usually a one click root app that does everything for you. After you are rooted you can install superuser from the market and it lets you choose what apps are allowed to have root access. You can search the droid forums for more info since I have an epic. If this helped please hit the thanks button below

Hello everyone. It has been a year since i bought my Captivate and i just put my hands on this awesome device (Infuse 4G).
I feel a little retarded as i completely forgot who i donated to on this forum for helping me to unlock my captivate when there was no soft for it in the market yet. I would like to thank you again whoever it was.
Anyway, I would like to ask you to help me to get rid of At&T crapware and get a nice clean fast rom. I will also need instruction for a total retard. Flashing a phone is not an everyday business for me.
Thanks

Also, this belongs in the General Forum.
* Download and extract the .zip = done
stuck at:
* Use a terminal emulator or ADB Shell and mount system as read/write.
unfortunately this is where i have no idea what terminal emulator is and how to use it, nor what ADB shell is.
Download root explorer, go into your base dir and click the "mount as r/w" button at the top

Which zip have you downloaded and extracted?
Have you read any instructions that are all over this site and many others?
There are literally video tutorials that go step by step from stock out of the box, to rooted and installing a ROM.
Search is your friend. Your best bet is to do some reading before you attempt to install a custom ROM. It's actually quite simple to do, hell I have upgraded my ROM while driving from the hanger at work over to the airport terminal.
However, if you don't know what you are doing, and aren't familiar with the concepts, you can and most likely will end up with a nice shiny brick. (soft brick most likely)
So, find the INFUSED rom thread and start reading and looking at the tutorials he has posted before you take another step. Then, and only then, if you still have questions, people will be very happy to help you out.
Also, as for unlock - if you read through the various threads on this forum, there are two methods covered for obtaining the SIM unlock code for our phones. One requires your phone to be rooted already, one is a script that roots the phone, extracts the code, and then optionally undoes the rooting.
Thanks a lot guys. I really should slow down and read stuff properly. Will let u know how im doing. Thanks again for being there.

Good insight.

Hello All,
I am trying to figure out some way to manually start an app as root. It seems that apps which "require" root privileges are coded to elevate to root using su. However, what I would like to do is manually start *any* app as root - even an app that does not "require" root privileges. For anyone familiar with Linux or Unix, this would be similar to running 'su -c /usr/bin/myapp' (or less so, but also similar to running 'sudo /usr/bin/myapp'). In Windows this would be like using 'runas /user:Administrator myapp.exe'. Specifically, what I would like to do is open my text editor as root, so I can modify my hosts file. I needed to change this today, but was not near a computer, and therefore I could not use ADB. I finally gave up trying to figure it out and simply used Vi from the terminal, which is fine when using ADB, but quite difficult when actually using the phone. I could not find many questions (or answers) about doing this, and the few posts I could find, I get the impression that those who replied did not fully understand what the OP was asking. If my question does not seem clear, please let me know and I will try to rephrase it. I very much appreciate any insight. Thank you.
hi guys,
first, i m all time thankful to these developer guys, you make mobile world so genius, yeah it was never genius,
second, something i learn and something i want to learn more is about android always, but here is my question below that is really important. i don't know if it really make sense or not but i would like to know your opinion.
question :- i see there is a way to push files into device without rooting it. is it secure? it is safe? i guess yes. than how can i push titanium backup(data only) of particular app into my device?
example : - i myself after learning lot about apk tool and all that, modded "whatsapp" successfully and which is out of this world according to me, lately i cam to know there is already one called whatsapp GB, but mine is mine. (right now i don't have rooted device so couldn't send screenshot), but what i am trying to figure out is, i can install my modded apk on my non-rooted device and can run it either, problem comes when it is about registering number, what i really thought that if i can push titanium backup of my modded whatsapp.apk (data only - taken perviously when i had rooted device) to this non rooted device via ADB, than i didn't need to root my device ever, and so for any other app that is modded by me or any developers can be executed on non rooted device.
pros - if this is possible than i guess People won't need to root device, will not loose warranties, will not loose device by bricking it, will get out of a procedure of root methods, no one will ask more about root method, soft brick, hard brick, boot loader issues and many more questions like that i guess.
there will left only one tutorial than if this is possible and it will be like this - how to use adb?(step by step : beginner to black hat).
if this is possible than what we need? proper method of how to use adb, most of people easily can learn how to use adb but most of tutorial misses some points like how to push file by changing r/w permission, and where to put new data backup or files in device like some tutorial i have seen gives only command line but people actually don't know where to put the file like /data/data and than what?
Developers and Rooted device owner will become God in fact in this case because they can lead the rest in right path.
is this possible? or am i ridiculously making no sense?
This is not the right place.

Hi folks!
Need some advice, before i invent the wheel again for myself.Learning by trying, but where to go or what to check from here...?
Busy with rooting an tablet, yes tried many apps, only kingroot works..What do i see, my system is only write protected and stays that way.
Made boot.img, ro secure=0(was=1),ro debugging=1(was=0),adb service=mtp/adb(was nothing).
Offcourse still no root, adb is now always root, and i can get su also.
So i thought what could be next..I checked for selinux, but cant find anything in the rom, inside when extracted, my last idea....Would be that.
Yesterday i tried Tsparky root script what installs busybox and supersu, same thing happens...No writing allowed, and offcourse no supersu found....While it was installed true the google play way...But adb was running in root..Uhm...????
So tonight i will try my last effort, in placing supersu in the system.img....I only sometimes think to straight, must i remove the other su..?And sometimes they change su in supersu...Got me confused alittle bit, i already read the supersu config file and i will try to place them and give them permissions...
But i have the feeling after reading other forums and peeps with the same issue that maybe....It will still not update the binary..
If my last effort doesn't work, what or where can i go further in rooting the tablet...Because its so difficult i learn a lot...But now...I really dont know what could be next! Read something about maybe there are ''flags'' in the system..How 2 check, can i remove them...
I hope its clear where i am at, and where i wane go, but what bump is still there in the system, some advice please.
Thanks
Erik
