[Q] is it necessary to unroot - Milestone XT720 General

After making changes? In the CBW instructions, at the very end, it reminds you to unroot your phone again. After making changes and changing boot animation, will all my changes stay if I unroot the phone? Or will this cause a lock-up/freeze?

Don't unroot. That part of the instructions is LOL funny. (But, yes your changes should survive if you do unless you have apps that require root to function)

Thanks for the quick reply, I shall leave it as is.

Major issues after all this S-OFF and Rooting, PLEASE HELP!

I am having major problems.
1-Wifi stops working and I have to reboot
2-My phone wont reboot unless I pull the battery.
3-My battery drains VERY quickly in standby.
What on earth should I do? I have S-OFF and I followed the guide to rooting using the PG58IMG file.
Please, could someone help?
Also, setcpu doesnt stick after reboot and adfree doesnt work at all. TB works fine as does root explorer.

One important point to remember is that this is a BETA! They made that clear. I had all the same problems, said to hell with that and used the RUU to put everything back to stock, now it is fine. I'd wait for a stable release (and CM7) before you try again. These problems seem to be common.
So, by going back to stock, you lose root but maintain S-OFF correct?
Matt
That is correct

You lose s-off... I know I had it happen, your results may vary, but I did lose s-off after running the RUU...
I also followed the guide to the letter, (this is not the first or the last I have s-off'ed/rooted), so I am not a noob, but I can only report what has happend to me. I may try again this afternoon for fun, BUT until CM7 comes out for the sensation, I probably won't waste my time.

The thing people need to remember, with this being "beta" these issues have to be dealt with one at a time. Eventually it will be a true one step process. Seems like a lot to go through for so little. BUT now that the Source Kernel has been released by HTC, Now that s-off has been achieved it won't be long until a good supply of QUALITY roms will be available.
If you flash a custom ROM, all your issues will magically disappear...

I am a little scared that I will just get further into trouble. Nothing seems to work right anymore. I cant even turn off my friggen phone the right way anymore...
If I manage to get it back to stock rom, can I use the old temp root methods while I wait for things to be ironed out?

Of course you can. But, for example, the wifi problem will be gone if you flash a custom, because it is probably an incompatibility between the boot.img and the modules. Just try flashing a custom
I am new to all this, so I will spend my time getting this back to stock, then temp root , and then wait out a new version....I am DL the stock ROM for TMOUS...
Matt
Hello there,
My first impression on using a Custom ROM on Sensation is awesome. After getting S-OFF and flashing LeeDROiD it seems to run smoother even though it isnt on a custom kernel yet. I guess we will have alot of releases the next days as the kernel source is out from HTC also
My phone was fast as heck after running ADW EX launcher and overclocking. I think I will wait this all out. I was in over my head. Can you guys confirm that following the debranding guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193033
will get me back to normal? I am ready to flash the rom.zip (renamed to PG58IMG.zip). I am waiting for my battery to charge. ;-)
Matt
I'm not 100% but isn't the PG58IMG file just the kernel?
What Sensation do you have 4G TMOUS?
What is your HBOOT (ex:1.17.0008)?
Can you describe in detail what steps you took from the beginning so we have a clear understanding what you did?
Hope we can help...
Started with 0008, then used revolution to get s-off. After that, I used the pg58IMG file. I was rooted at that point. Once I set setcpu back up, the wifi stopped working. The other troubles started right after the root.
I just reverted to stock, and am setting things back up. Looks like I am still s-off though. Will I be able to use the temp root method still?

That's because that unsecured boot image you used, is incompatible with the modules you have. If you flash a custom ROM, which is uber-easy, the wifi problem, plus the root problems will be gone. Trust me
Alright, I am back to the way things were. I still have s-off, but I am back to the stock ROM and have my phone temp rooted again.
When you guys talk about flashing ROMs, could I just do that as is? Do I need to do anything else, now that I have s-off? Could I just load the ROM on my SD card, then do the same thing I did to get back to stock?

[Q] Verizon Update Lost Root

Hi All:
I was having some signal quality issues and Verizon had my apply the newest software update available. I was rooted, but after the update i lost root. It said the update failed, but it also says my phone is up to date. Now when I reboot the phone one of the screens says "Samsung Custom" with a a picture of an un-locked lock (i don't believe it showed that before).
1) Can i go through the process of rooting again without screwing up my phone? Do i need to do anything prior to rooting again if I can root again?
2) What does that screen on the reboot menu mean?
3) Should i bother to do Verizon software updates in the future?
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, I couldn't find a thread in my search. Thanks for your help!
This has been discussed to death, especially in the thread that YOU read to root your phone. You NEVER take an OTA update when rooted. You will most defiantly lose root with the possibility of locking your bootloader and never being able to root again or unlock the bootloader. Since you are this deep, you can do 1 of 2 things. 1. Sit tight and see what is figured out. 2. Odin to a pre-rooted image, restore your backup, and wait to see what the devs say about it.

Well I guess I forgot that little bit of valuable information. So does that reboot screen just mean my bootloader is locked? Also, my backup was deleted somehow during the update process. I tried to go into recovery and load my backup, but it is no longer available.
If you have an unlocked lock, I would thing that would mean unlocked, right? Do you still have your custom recovery?

I have ROM Manager, which i used to access CWM. But if i try to boot into recover from a power off state it says "System Software not authorized by VZW has be found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest VZW store for help." At the top of that screen in red it says "Secure Fail: Kernel." So that leads me to believe I don't have a custom recovery anymore, correct?

Follow the steps here to root the new OTA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439. The unlocked lock and custom when you boot up actually does mean that your bootloader has been relocked. Strange way to show it though. You could wait until mrRobinson updates his no wipe odin factory images but that might be a couple days. I always use that method instead.

Ok yeah I'll check that out if he updates this week. Do I need to do a factory reset or anything or just leave my phone as is for now?

You don't have to reset anything if you don't want to. You can flash the full wipe or no wipe version. Everybody has their own preferences, I like the no-wipe versions. I usually avoid taking the Verizon OTAs directly by disabling the software update service with Titanium Backup Pro since they screw up root and the bootloader. I wait until there is an ODIN flashable image of it. Others prefer to take the OTA and root using the guide above, or flash the odex or deodex versions in recovery like the ones here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2177798.

HELP! 9.30.1 OTA (LOST ROOT) Is There a Different way to Gain Root Back?

Ok so heres my first question?........... Is there any possible way of gaining root access through linux for my android ? ....Like running certain commands to do so......I know u have to change permissions and make changes to the android file system......And was wondering since linux uses root in terminals and so on and so forth would it work to access root in linux and maybe use a file manager to open your android system files in linux to make these changes so u may root. .. Instead of waiting for a DEV to create a method or script that will work ... Isnt there a way we can gain this back without waiting for an actual script to release . I rely on my root for a vast majority of my apps and i am lost without it . I know it may be more complex and diffucult for some people but to gain root access back this way ... But it would be great.
I have a working linux set up on my comp already with working adb /sdk installed ..... If anybody can help me with rooting my phone it would be very much appreciated. Im not new to this at all im very familiar with linux and how to use it. i basically need help with the rooting process and what to do when it comes to that.
I do not have an unlocked bootloader if that makes any difference.
Took 9.30.1 OTA and lost root.
As far as i know there is no script/method to root for the new OTA 9.30.1 update.
Tryed rooting already with Linux but my file system wont allow anything to be written to it.. Its Read Only File System. I think it has to be Read/Write
I really hope there is a root script/method released soon if this way isnt possible
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you
No. Unless an exploit is found, you are out of luck.

I doubt there will be another exploit. This phone is a year old now and most devs are focusing on custom ROMs.

Mostly likely none. Because at this point 95% of people know to protect root before taking an ota. Or just don't take it.

My phone is the not-unlockable one and locked.
I happend to click yes when this update question came. After realizing what was happening, I set my phone to flight mode, and the update downloading is now paused. Is there anyway to cancel this downloading/update process?
I have installed safestrape and backup my stock ROM before this. The worst is that I restore the backup and the update question will be prompted again, right?
Or is there other way to stop the update downloading in progress?
Another question, if root is lost through the OTA update, can I restore the backup through Safestrape and get root again? Or is everything gone?

Once root is lost after the ota has been fully applied, the backup will do you no good as there is a new kernel applied.
As for it being paused, I believe you should be okay. Just because you started the download doesn't mean it's been applied. Freeze the updater apk and reboot. I believe that will cancel the download and with the frozen updater, you won't get bothered again.
You could apply the update if you save root with voodoo root keep but if you ever have to reimage your phone, you will lose root permanently. I'd just hold off and wait and see if an exploit is ever found.

Anyone working on a root exploit for 9.30.1
So is anyone working on an exploit to root this update?? I just don't want to have to keep SBF'ing my Razr Maxx HD back to older versions and reconfiguring all my stuff. For what ever reason, I could not get OTA's. I was rooted(motochopper) and used superuser and voodoo. Protected my root, temp unrooted, downloaded the update, but then it would fail on install. I even tried flashing back to the stock recovery and it failed. So just to see what the 9.30 did, I installed it through Droid Razr HD Utility 1.34...of course I lost root, can't put a custom recovery on it, but my phone seems to run pretty good for a stock rom. So, I'm just wondering.

I had root with the 9.30.1 update. I backed up root with OTA RootKeeper but my phone was acting up so i factory reset it and all went to hell...!!! I protected everything and backed up hoping that would do the trick but unfortunately it didnt save the root like it should have now i sit I regret ever resetting it thats for sure. It was risky on my part playing with the reset option knowing there was no exploit out yet and i payed the price

im assuming your bootloader is unlocked?
if so, search for a flash-able zip of SU. you can root any build, problem solved.
I know our RAZR HD's are old, but there's nothing better out there. At this point, I'm willing to pay cash money for anyone able to find a new root exploit for this dumb 9.30 update. I took all the precautionary steps and have an unlocked phone, yet for some reason as soon as the update applied I lost root. It happened during the last ota and I got lucky that the warranty covered me. Not gonna happen now with a unlocked booty. So once again, please find a root exploit and I'll pay you. I dont want to get rid of my razr. Thanks yall

I've tried every su time there is in here and other sites. They fail every time. I've tried recovery through twrp and cwm and they both fail. As a matter of fact since I took the update neither one of those will work now either. I'll keep trying new stuff until I succeed or brick this phone. All other devices that are currently available can't hold a flame to the RAZR.

I get the "warning, boot loader unlocked" message every time I power up. Used *#*#4636#*#* and checked that device shows root. I took all the precautionary steps before installing the ota, and I was having problems that both 9.20 and 9.30 fixed. Was running eclipse as a ROM before all this went screwy lewy
tried using motochopper (no winning)
All boxers are checked, however when I get the true ending to check my SU, it gives me some bogus message about needing to update SU, however it says I have an HTC device, I'm very confused on this, and don't understand what it is even referring too.
Anyone know what I'm reading about here?

NFC Icon Flashing In Status Bar - But No Option Anymore

Ok guys, so I messed up and flashed the Viper Rom onto my phone. I am Boost mobile (K2_CL) and didn't realize it wasn't supported, luckily I had backed up through TWRP so I went to restore that backup and now I have an issue with the NFC. The NFC icon in the status bar quickly, like miliseconds quickly, flashes ever half second. I don;t have the NFC settings in my menu anymore either like previously. I even backed up my wifes One SV and restored hers on mine, which has never been tampered with until today, and even with her restore it is doing it on my phone. Any ideas on hos to make it stop and get the function back again?
There are different partition layouts between european and boost roms. So it seems, it has some firmware parts overwritten. In this case you can't solve that with a backup or flashing another rom.
I would try to run the available RUU for your phone, maybe it can restore things.

I guess you need to downgrade hboot first. And therefor you need S-Off.

[Q] My nexus 5 is starting to lag and shutter after long usage and towelroot

Hi all, so i brought my phone in late December. I have been using it every day since then. And i have not done a single factory reset, even though i download new apps every day, download files etc. Basicly somewhat heavy usage. So last week i downloaded Towelroot, i didnt believe it will work to be honest, but apparently it did. So i had a rooted nexus 5, and i did not back up my stock rom. First thing i did i brought an app called SoftKeyZ root, that allows you to change the look of software buttons. Beeing on the hype of getting root, i didnt save my stock rom and i changed the buttons. I suppose i wont be getting OTA updates now? And since last week my google drive doesn't work any more, it doesnt give any upload speed at all. And my phone battery is draining super fast, the phone lags occasionally, and shutters or freezes completely for few seconds. Can this be because i rooted it? And will factory reset do any good? Since i suppose it will not remove root. Will it reset my buttons though? And how do i unroot my device easily and get my stock European rom back? Is there no app like Towelroot-unroot that unroots the device just by clicking one button? I am very worried now so please explain very detailed and what would you do. I do not have the money to fix my phone if i brick it or something. I have changed roms before but for some reason ibdo not want to fiddle with this phone because literally this is the most expensive thing i have had. Awaiting your replies!
So you've done nothing and you're all out of ideas?

Thanks for the link! Looks pretty easy but is that really the only option? No easier way without flashing? I ruinded S1 by flashing and deleting wrong cache. That is why i really dont want to do that.
Also the problems i face, could they be because of root?
And if i decide not to unroot, will i get OTA updates despite what i already have done?

You can get OTA if rooted, so yes you can get OTA without root.
Follow the guide. Flashing is the best way. The process wont let you "delete wrong cache". It's the official, google process.
