Sprint people: OTA info - General Topics

Guys here is some info I wish I had when I got my first Nexus S OTA:
For 95% of you, you don't need to worry about getting the OTA. Only 5% of users get the OTA on day 1. It will be posted on XDA soon after the updates roll out. You will be able to download it and flash it from CWM like any ROM. There will also be rooted versions available.
So think twice before going back to stock to try to get your OTA, it might be a huge waste if time.

rooted stock rom question

everytime sprint comes out with an update, is there a standard rooted stock rom that I can use?
I'm kinda new to this....just wondering if there is such a rom posted by someone here everytime sprint pushes out a new update ..appreciate all ur help...thx...
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Short answer...yes.
Never accept the OTA updates that come from Sprint. Always wait for someone here to post a rooted file. They are usually in the dev section, and usually out within a day or 2 of the OTA push

Official Captivate Froyo

After rooting and updating to leaked froyo
Will I be able to upgrade to the official update?
Is there a chance I wont be able to?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You can just one click odin back to stock and you will be able to. I believe there is no way you wont be able to unless you brick your phone of course
Not trying to scare u but I don't think u would be able to. I heard once u root and ur files have been messed with, u will no longer be able to ever update. Not even if u flash back to stock. This happened to me with the update they recently released.I researched why my phone didn't update and came across that info. But I could be wrong and why would u want to go to stock?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Above info is incorrect. If your rooted you can still update. If you kernel hoped you need to flash back to stock to do the OTA update. I have tested this.
So its safe just so as long as I flash with Odin and don't brick my phone right
Thanks for helping me out with this

the JH7 update for 2.1 eclair......the ONLY update that has come through OTA from ATT
just a thought, why would you want the official update as it will be made so much better after the guys here fix it. then just odin flash it... just my thoughts
happy captivate user cog 7.0 froyo.....
i need to go up to 9.1 but im happy as it is.
I was wondering the same thing. I have a rooted captivate running froyo and I wanted to install the update that was suppossed to fix gps. I erased the root and flashed back to stock eclair and I still couldnt install the update. I spent hours on the phone with att and samsung and did a bunch of factory resets and still no luck. Samsung said that the only thing left to try would be to send it in to them so they could flash their stock os back on it. But then I would be without a phone for a week and they wont give me a loner. Its really frustrating. The only reason I would go back to stock is if they fix the gps issue. That is the only major complaint that I have with this phone.

So u can't go back to official 2.1 and update to froyo (when released) if rooted

nobody knows. stop speculating
For the the last JH7 update, I flashed back to JF6 stock via odin one click, then pulled the OTA update via Kies Mini. Since it worked last time, why won't it work again? Once you flash back with Odin 1 click, Kies Mini sees the phone as fresh out of AT&T store. And the phone in such a condition is most certainly able to be updated straight to Froyo.
I just flashed back to 2.1 through Odin and did the update through Settings/Software Update. No issues.
Alright sounds great
I think I might root and get a new rom today
Any suggestions?
Thanks for the help

I was just reading about att updating issues. Came across something that worked for me. After that gps update I wasn't able to check att for updates anymore. So all I did was go to manage apps, filter to all, go to divice manager, delete data, reboot, and I was able to check for updates again. But fyi, I'm not rooted, so not sure if this will help or not.

You will be able to update, however it will most likely have to be done with Kies.
My phone was rooted and like you all would not allow the OTA update when trying to do so through the phone.
I updated kies itself hooked my phone up and installed the latest update. When doing so though, it removed my root access, reinstalled the bloatware, and undid any changes I did that required rooting (like the circle battery mod).
So updates can be had if you are rooted, it just may always require using the POS program Kies.
noone really knows about ota but probably. kies and odin should still work regardless.
the jf7 ota was not a full rom, it was a small file that contained scripts that replaced modules if i understand it right. froyo probably will need a full install and is more likely to work but is not garenteed by anyone, its all speculation. it is not clear that the last update failing was the intentions of samsung or att, they are not intentionally denying people the update they are just not going to go out of there way to support modded phones when they can save space time and data doing another way. people have reported that kies works and designgears is very fast to release odin versions when new updates are available.
Ahhh the GPS. I was in the car with my family last night and me and my brother have Captivates and I had to ask my mother for her 8GB 3GS so we could GPS our way. So sad. I absolutely love my Captivate to death but it Froyo doesn't fix the GPS I will, 100%, never buy another Samsung phone again. I don't care how awesome they are.
I'm going to wait for the update to be released and for a cooker here to make an awesome rom with the official release.
if you have a rooted and flashed phone why would you want the official update just get it from here, I don't see why this is a cause for concern

[Q] My Nexus S can't be upgraded to 2.3.3

Device: Nexus S
Carrier: T-mobile
Country / Language: The U.S.
OS / Browser / build number (if applicable): 2.3.2
Hello, my cell phone is Nexus S.
The Android version is 2.3.2 now. I want to upgrade to 2.3.3.
However, when I click 'System updates' button in my Nexus S, it says 'Your system is currently up to date.'
Recently, I reset my Nexus S. How can I fix this problem?
Do I have to upgrade manually? I wanna upgrade in my cell phone..
I'm still waiting for the OTA too so I guess they ended the distribution. Who knows
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Eventually google will flag your IMEI to receive the update. Theres no telling when you'll be receiving the update or if they're still actively pushing it out. If you don't want to wait then you could manually update by downloading the rom file from the xda thread and flashing it yourself. Otherwise, its the waiting game.

There is a report that the OTA isnt going through. Not sure why, just manually flash it. It's the same as a OTA.
be aware that a LOT of people are complaining about the color correction on the 2.3.3 update....read up on it first, before doing the update
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971987
I personally don't mind, but a LOT of people do.
Dont keep waiting for the OTA. Manually update your phone.
I dont believe Google would take so long for the OTA...it is not that everyone born in the world have 2-3 Nexus S each that it takes forever for the OTA to come through...I wonder if they have stopped the OTAs so go ahead and do it manually...
There would be a minor hiccup on how the screen looks after the update...I didnt have a major heartbreaking screen after updating.
CAUTION: Check your version before you update

[Q] Anything we need to do before the update rolls out?

My phone's currently rooted (running CM7 if that matters). Since the OTA update for Sprint is supposed to start rolling out this Monday, is there anything I need to do in order to receive the update?
Will I need to unroot?
Is there some manual way of checking for the update on custom ROMs?

I have raised this question on two threads. I used Mikeyinid's rom for awhile and now have Oxygen rom and I have asked in both threads what would be done. People have told me that an update.zip would be released or the rom itself would be upgraded. Just keep your eye on your respective rom's thread and the developer should get everyone taken care of. As soon as the first member of this site gets the OTA, you know it will be posted and then applied to all the roms/kernels lol. We wont have to do anything but reboot to recovery and flash knowing these guys. I give it a few hours after it starts rolling out before they have it locked in lol

That actually makes a lot of sense! Thanks for the answer!
Honestly most of the fixes are gonna be in the radio. Personally I don't even care about the 2.3.5 stuff or whatever else is included. I just want to flash the new radio the second its available and I will happily wait for ROMs to the be updated from that point on
yea, all i care about is the radio too....GB reminds me if vista, everytime they fix a problem, it changes...2.3 2.3.2 2.3.3 2.3.4 ..... 2.3.5? just fix my radio and send me 4.0 !

Phone Update...but not ICS

There is a minor update coming....sucks it isn't ICS, but they tend to push out these updates just before a major upgrade...so fingers crossed.
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-4182
Whether or not it is worth installing, though....and it does look like your phone has to be unrooted.

I've kept my phone on its stock ROM and unrooted, and it looks like my waiting finally paid off! Hoping you're right, and that this is a pre-req for the upcoming ICS release. Maybe this will coincide with the T-mo release of the Blaze Q (QWERTY version of the Blaze 4G)?
Also, has this update gone live yet? I'm using WiFi at the moment and so far I get a message saying there isn't an update available from the server
Can someone confirm if I have to be unrooted?
Sent from my SGH-T769 using xda premium
I put my sim into the blaze and nothing no update ota yet lol if anyone gets it before midnight hit me up on a PM
if not then tomorrow it goes live on mini kies and i'll just download it there
This is why I always flash recovery first and run a backup of stock prior to rooting. I will backup where I am now and check to see if there's anything to this update.
This also kind of confirms that ICS will be coming soon as stated... kinda exciting!

Didn't get the update stock either. ...not that I expected this to actually come ota...

Just wanted to point out, this made it to tmonews:
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/07/sams...pdate-prepares-device-for-ice-cream-sandwich/
"We saw something very similar for the Galaxy S II as a small maintenance update arrived a few weeks before Ice Cream Sandwich. We hope that same scenario plays out here as well. Stay tuned for Ice Cream Sandwich Blaze 4G owners."
Huh... How do I revert to Stock unrooted? Also, do I HAVE to update to install future custom ICS ROMs? I'd rather just wait until the source code is released ans I'll just install a Stock custom ROM. I need clarification. Because I don't feel like reverting to Touchwiz -_-

just because u said u don't like touchwiz made me answer this more
to return to unrooted stock you need to use the stock LB7 tar file and the blaze.pit file and Odin back to stock
I beliieve k0nane made a good guide for that on dev forum.
And you can always wait as soon as Kies updates tomorrow with LF4 i'll download and decrypt it and use it for base no my build 5 for dknight which is going to add some awesome stuff on top of the already awesome stuff

Yay! So I'll skip the 'back to Root' phase for that dumb small update and just wait until you release your updated one. I'll just have to flash it which is easier lol.

Update is live through Kies as of 9am cst. You lose CWM through the update and cannot be rooted.
So will the current CWM and rooting methods be ok to be used again? I hate bloat
How long did it take for the update to work via Kies?
I started the firmware download, and once the download finished Kies kind of.. froze. Didn't see any activity in task manager, phone didn't show anything besides the normal home screen. Disconnected the phone with no ill effects fortunately.
Probably because I'm running Windows 8 release preview.. will try on my other Windows 7 rig
