Hello! I'm new to my phone (last Monday), and new to Android in general.
Apparently we're getting a software update to GRJ90 starting on July 11th, and I was wondering what I need to do...
I'm running stock rom, rooted, with the latest Matr1x kernel. Do I just update and then reflash the kernel?
I can't link the article, unfortunately, but it's on Sprint Feed if you want to take a look yourself.
Wait what? Sprint Feed?
OK I found it.
Basically you're going to wait until someone gets the update and breaks out the radio updates and posts them as flashable zips. Shortly after, someone will post the new ROM, but rooted with busybox installed etc. You should back up all your apps and data, wipe, then flash the new radio and ROM.
Just read the same article
http://www.sprintfeed.com/2011/07/nexus-s-4g-software-update-coming-july-11/
Enhancements Inclue:
Enables the NFC Secure Element
4G Settings Widget
TTY Support
NI Push Support
Improved WiFi Connectivity, Speakerphone audio quality, 4G throughput and signal acquisition.
Tuned signal strength indicators.
Since you're rooted, you'll wait for an updated rooted stock rom like jonnythan said
Only accept OTA's if you are stock unrooted
Is sprint only fixing 4g connectivity only or are they also addressing the 3g as well? I mostly leave 3g on since my neighborhood doesn't have 4g connectivity. Thanks.

Ah, great, thanks for answering everyone!
Something to note, someone just posted the following comment:
The author of this post is 100% wrong. This is indeed a very major update. It will give the Nexus S 4G phone a massive performance boost. It will also fix every single major bug listed in the Sprint community forums. I should note, however, in areas where Sprint's EVO 4G phone can't get a 4G WiMAX signal the Nexus S 4G in its current state has no trouble at all.

So, that's awesome? If it's true.

So last night I installed GRJ90 from buglesspete's post, but little did I know it did not have the new radio in it.
All of my speeds were much improved today, as I posted elsewhere. Once I learned I was still on the old radio, I flashed the new one and my results stayed the same. No problem... just confusing, since I thought the improvement was supposed to come from the radio, right?
you may have just sparked the biggest thread on the forum's
people are gunna be flocking back to the old radio to get tethering back and use 2.3.5 to get teh upp'd speeds
i have also noticed that with the new update that the status icon shows 3g even when on 1x looks like they are faking the signal like they do with other sprint phones.

Are you sure hotspot was blocked by radio and not grj90? I couldn't get hotspot to work last night while still on old radio, but I also couldn't get wifi tether to work so maybe something else was wrong on my end.

i flashed grj90 through cwm and i still have tethering and hotspot available??? i dont have 4g here in vermont and was hoping the update would boost 3g but ive noticed no change.
grj22 with new radio = hotspot functioning.
also getting the 3g icon when in 1x areas. I see no improvement in the 3g/wifi speeds at all, and signal still fluctuates wildly.
My tethering is also working..
Sent from my Nexus S 4G
to the ppl saying tethering works for them.. just to be certain.. are you using the built in wireless hotspot feature found in the settings menu?
not sure why some people still have it working and some don't. i wonder if some qpst m.ip profile edits could trick it into working again?
Hey everyone, I have a Tmo Sensation 4g. I took all the proper steps to root the phone and wiped my stock rom off before flashing the Android Revolution 3.3 HD rom as well as changed to the radio that he recommended. However, it seems that my 4g is not available. Prior to flashing I had 4g nearly everywhere and now I only have 3g. Anyone have the same problem? Is there a fix?

Should post in Q&A but check the area that talks about RIL's and install the one that is ends in 169. I don't have any problems with my TMUSA sensation with this rom and also check if you get the H that is also a symbol for 4G
Thank you for the assistance, but where do I find this section about RIL's? I cant seem to see that term.

Top few posts on this page
hehe.. This is because T-Mobile lies and puts a 4G icon when you have 3G.
Don't be dumb, this is not development. Your phone is 4G, 4G is 3g but it's just tmobile advertising there 4th generation connection. You get faster download speeds on 4G but on euro build roms they only have 3g. You should get a H logo when you are using data such as downloading, browsing the Internet ect. Which H stands for hsap + which is 4G. Sorry to be so mean it's just a very old topic just should of been posted in q and a not here.
Sent from my Sensation running Leedroid Sensational 2.3
Seriously, the 4g icon and the H icon, are just that.. Icons used to represent your data speed. It is not your actual data speed. If I wanted to I can create a mod that will replace the icon to Edge to represent 4G speeds, but it won't mean I'll be on edge.
OK, so I'm trying to round up all of those who are experiencing the 3g/4g radio switching bug. In a nutshell, it's this:
In the middle of a data-intensive process, the radio will switch several times from 3g to 4g to 3g to 4g, and over and over again. Often, it will cause disconnects, failed downloads, and interrupted streaming audio, etc.
If you are experiencing this bug, please post in this thread, and be sure to include whether you have the US or EU version of the phone. I want to consolidate all those with the problem into a large thread, so it can get more visibility.
Hi,
I have exactly the same problem with my One S.
When the phone idle, the connection is 3G but when i use the data, it switch to 4G/3G/4G/etc...
As you said, it cause disconnects and and sometimes resolving errors.
My phone :
HTC One S 1.53.401.2 (stock rom)
Kernel : 3.0.8-01050-ge2a40ab
Baseband : 0.15.31501S.19_10.12.31501S.06L
Build : 1.53.401.2.CL47230
Operator : Free (France)
Same problem, with a SH23 EU phone and firmware version 1.53.401.2.
It switches from 3G and H (which is more 3.5G or 3G+ than 4G here), but I didn't experienced connexions problems (but haven't had many opportunities till now)
EDIT: Sorry, didn't see that another thread already exists in General forum.
same issue here, same firmware

I'm with the same phone and same behavior exactly.
I've already notified HTC about t a week or more ago.
I believe this is due to EU software. My reasoning is this:
On my T-MOUS One S, everything is fine on stock firmware with root. I NEVER experience this problem, the only switching I ever get is when I'm on a fringe area with NO 3/3.5G. As soon as I flash a rom that is based on EU firmware (all of them basically), I can't run speedtests without data being interrupted and the status bar shows switching from H to 3G repeatedly. No, this is not a scientific test by any means, but once again I have no problems whatsoever on my T-Mobile US stock rom.
T mobile does have the bug
It is because the T Mobile base is programmed to not switch from 4g but I assure you I own the phone and if you do speed test you will see this bug is definitely present..
I've been doing speedtests since I bought the phone.. it never happens on mine
whether you like it or not..
Guess you have the magic device that does not have the bug which everyone else has..even though tmobile acknowledged the issue already as well as the people with the EU version which also has the bug..

Got a T-mobile HTC sensation, it was already unlocked for other carriers but no S-off or unlocked bootloader.
I got an S-off, unlocked the bootloader, changed CID, flashed Android Revolution HD 6.7.2, but I have HORRIBLE signal reception. So I found that update file in the header which said "- HTC Sensation 4G (U.S. T-Mobile PG5810000 | T-MOB010) users can flash this for better signal and data speeds!" I installed it... NO IMPROVEMENT, my last hope is flash a different radio. Anybody knows what's the problem and how to fix it?
configs right now
different carrier sim (not t-mobile)
S-off, unlocked loader
HBOOT: 1.27.11111
Radio: Radio_11.76A.3504.00P_11.24A.3504.31_M
cid changed to 1111111
firmware: 3.33
ROM right now: is the XE version with beats (tried 1.2.2 too, no change)
Kernel: faux
EDIT: just found out that my wifi is not working either, tried the boot.img fix, didn't help. I get Wifi for a brief second and if I managed to connect it will stay for a while, but if I don't no wifi after that.

Have you tried a different kernel? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269247 (maybe its for AOSP only though)
Sensation Kernel Update (different and more recent than above): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1256668
Different (userfriendly) radios? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
Remember to make a backup before install.
yes I have tried 2-3 kernels, including Bricked.
and I have changed 7-8 different radios/firmwares
P.S. fixed wifi with WiFix, at least this 2 issues are not connected
Greetings. I'm taking a stab at asking my question here because it seems sort of related.
I'm a T-mobile USA customer with a brand new SIM card in my Sensation 4g that I bought a few months ago.
My bootloader is unlocked, I'm S-off, I've flashed the custom firmware (version: 3.32.401.3) that was recommended for those flashing the Cyanogenmod 9 ROM. I'm currently using the most recent STABLE Cyanogenmod 9 ROM (not 9.1, but the STABLE 9 ROM). I'm using the stock Cyanogenmod 9 kernel (the one that came with the ROM: 3.0.26-g7290c7f). I never bothered to flash a new radio, not sure if that's a mistake or not.
My reception is good but it seems rather obvious that my phone is completely unable to hook up to or unaware of the 4g network. When downloading, the icon in the taskbar always shows either "3g" or "H" and when I check the "Status" in "About Phone" my "Mobile Network Type" is always listed as UMTS:3 or HSDPA:9.
Can anyone make any suggestions for how I might begin the trouble shooting process to remedy this issue. Thank you in advance for any sage like advice you might provide, I'm pretty lost here.

H is good. It means you are on an HSDPA network. That's 4G for the purposes of this conversation (though what really constitutes 4G is a little more involved)
HSDPA:9 might just be the best speeds that are available in your area. For instance 8 is the best I can get at my house. No amount of better phones will fix that. It's just what's available from the tower.

That's helpful thank you. One last question in the interest of clarification. Should I find myself in an HSPA+ reception area, should I expect the information over the reception bars to change from 3g to 4g and would "Mobile Network Type" then reflect HSPA+ as opposed to HSDPA 9?
Just curious so I might know what to look for when crossing into better network areas.
Thanks again for the tip.
The H means 4g technically. You can update your radio and ril very easily. Will find links and edit post

Thanks for the link. I guess what I was wondering is whether or not I actually need to update my radio, I'd feel a lot more confident in my reception if I ever saw HSPA+ listed in my phone's "Mobile Network Type", but I never do. I had previously thought that HSDPA was 3G, but maybe I'm missing something.
Thanks for the link, flashing a new radio is something I had been giving consideration, I'm just wondering how user friendly the process is. Like picking a needle out of a haystack, or is there someway to narrow down what radio/ril combo is best for one's phone/network.
I'll read through the thread for the link you posted and update my progress here later. Thanks for the info.

your data connection will still say 3G, unless you start to use the data then it will automatically switch to 4G/H (saves battery this way)
HTC made a fault with the Sensation with building the antennas into the back case (hand over the back of the phone = small loss of reception)
Theres a program called getRIL in the play store. You can update your radio and ril as long as your root. Which i assume u are. I do it thep old fasion way though.

I read about all of the issues people are having with the newest OTA (MD3). I decided to give it a try anyway, because I love writing emails to Verizon pointing out their flaws.
I followed the instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709 to go back to stock, using the Official VRALG1 4.0.4 Firmware. I wiped the Data and Cache partitions after installing. After this, I applied each patch in succession BEFORE installing any other software or programs. When I was done, I immediately disabled the Caller Name ID app. I have NONE of the reported bugs:
* Texts send immediately on the first try
* Battery life is no different than it was on the last firmware
* Phone switches easily between Wifi, 3G, and 4G LTE
* 4G LTE speeds are normal
I am no stranger to unlocking, flashing ROMS and Radios, etc, but I am most certainly NOT a dev. I'm posting this information here so that someone with more knowledge than I may be able to glean some information useful to those that ARE having a problem from this post.
I was having issues with the ota and I went back to the oldest update then took the otas.
Then rerooted mb1 and flashed bonestock 2.0 with the mb3 radio/modem....still had signal issues. And that rom has all bloat removed. So I flashed the mb1 radio/modem and now I get better signal.
Ha thats my story.....definitely a mess up from Big Red.

I wiped and then installed the stock deodexed MD3 ROM and firmware and had data issues...low signal, frequent drops to 3g or 1x, etc. Ran it for a few days and it was noticeable wherever I went. Restored my CleanROM nandroid and flashed the MB1 firmware and my signal has been much more consistent again.
I was weary of the rumored issues so I completely wiped my internal storage for a fresh install, and MD3 has been nothing short of amazing for my phone. If anything the only knock on it is that the signal has degraded about a bar in areas where I'd normally have full bars. Data connectivity is fine, data speeds are fine, the kernel with this update deep sleeps better than most that I've flashed in the past month. It's been nothing but good so far

For a device that already had bad radios for low signal areas, the reception issue is bad. It is not like going from great radios to good radios, but going from barely okay radios overall to worse. Everything is relative and the radio changes absolutely suck in that regard.

I"d say this thread is now dead since Samsung / Verizon have now pulled the OTA and will release a fixed version later, That usually means 1 day for Samsung to fix it, and 3 months for Verizon to test and approve the release.
In comparing the S3 to two other Verizon Motorola phones in my family, I find the S3 signal to be as good or better to the Motos when running the current stock software, (not the broken MD3 OTA) . SO I'd say its pretty good as Verizon goes. Interestingly, I find that the Verizon S3 is not nearly as good in signal as my wife's Sprint S3 , Surprising because VErizon and Sprint often share cell towers.

This is exactly the thing. After using MB3 update a whole week, giving it a chance....my phone would still WORK in areas with strong signal, but everywhere else it went from ok to UN-usable!
There is a clear issue here but if you are in areas with only great signal you may not notice as much but it's there.

What they should do is release here first. There are no better beta testers then XDA members and we could probably find every flaw within a day, and heck our devs can probably fix most of them for Samsung anyway.

Samsung usually releases a test release on KIES for their own stuff, but Verizon of course won;t let them do that for Verizon phones because Verizon has their own professional way of doing things....hahahaha
