[Q] I'm a noob - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

So as you all can tell....I'm new to this forum and to the Android platform as well. I just switched from my Iphone to the Galaxy S 4g and it has been great so far! After doing a little research myself I was able to root the phone via superoneclick. As I was reading further into the certain roms that are out and things I could do to further enhance my phone, I decided to get the new gingerbread 2.3.3. I used the program called Odin 1.7 to flash rom and besides from the known "rainbow screen issue and the low wifi signal" it is running smooth. I was just curious on what these programs called adb, cwm(clockwork mods I believe), and cyanogen7? are used for and how? I apologize for my noobness for asking these questions but I just feel like a kid in a candy store with no cash to spend hahah. If someone can redirect me to some links that can get me a general idea of how the Android software and mods work that would be great!!!

I remember signing up for these forums and not actually using them 'cause I was reading and trying to catch up with the vast amount of info available here... It was overwhelming to say the least.
ADB is the Android Debug Bridge. If you've ever used the command prompt, it's essentially the same. You type in commands and they get executed on the phone. I still argue that you get more power and flexibility through text-based programs, which ADB will let you use. You can use ADB if you use your phone to go into Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging (check the box next to it) then you can hook up your phone to the computer and run the ADB server on the computer. If you have superoneclick, it should've come with the ADB server as part of the tools.
CWM is a recovery mod, it sits on top of the phone's standard recovery program and gives you more power than the default one. You can make complete and partial backups of your phone's data in case you're flashing roms constantly and something goes wrong. You won't be able to use CWM with gingerbread at this moment since there's no support for it, but if you downgrade to Froyo, you'll be able to.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374
Cyanogen Mod isn't available for our phone yet, but it's a popular rom on the phones on which it is available.
Have fun!
EDIT:
You should probably bookmark the bible, lots of good references there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117554

welcome to the forum! glad everything works well for you on the first time flashing gingerbread. you can read up on everything in the bible thread below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117554
check out the guides and it should give you a pretty good feel on everything.

Welcome to XDA!
First of all, kudos to the fact that you're brand new and you've already learned to ODIN gingerbread yourself.
ADB is a way of transferring and editing files on your phone.
It's very useful for editing system files, etc.
Not really necessary for you to know right now.
CWM, or ClockWorkMod, is an easy way for you to change your phone theme, apply a ROM (a combination of themes, or modifications), or flash tweaks. Right now, Gingerbread doesn't have CWM but it should be coming in the near future.
For the basics and a few tutorials, look for the GS4G bible, and also look at my tiny little guide, here.

dan, whenever people ask for places to get info, i'm going to give the bible as well as a link to your site too, if thats cool. you have a ton of info and it saved me when i first bricked. lol. (it was like 1230 or something and search was down)

You honestly don't really need ADB if you have Root Explorer, or QuickSSH'd (which I love).
If you do end up getting QuickSSH'd I'd be glad to help you use it.

If you don't wanna pay for QuickSSHd you can also get SSHDroid
https://market.android.com/details?id=berserker.android.apps.sshdroid
You install the app on your phone, then you can get a program on your computer that supports SSH
Putty
WinSCP
Tunnelier
I prefer Putty for running commands and Tunnelier for transferring files. When you run SSHDroid, it'll explain to you how to use it.

PC GUI application to browse phone?

Other than using Root Explorer, and ADB'ing with the ls command, is there a way to see the phone's files (not SDCARD) on the PC with GUI capabilities?

droid explorer also works.
I've used droid explorer and it works pretty well. I ran into some quirks at times but should be adequate. Root explorer is the bomb though for file management on the device sans pc.

well buddy idk where your other thread went, so ill just post it here. js recomends posting a logcat, and it does make sense. we cant fix the issue without knowing what it is.
my recomendations:
if your really getting hit with fc's, so bad that your being distrupted from daily use, id honestly say youd need to live with rosie. for whatever reason rosie is making you so uncomfortable, maybe its time to just learn to accept her into your life
switch roms. ic3 is all aosp, has jit, and fixed the utility fc issue. oc'ing is possible in any rom, just takes some modding. i truthfully dont like oc'ing, and would advice against it(personally....)
talk to the dev. i dont follow that thread, as in, at all, but im sure if you posfed there theyd be more than happy to help.

Checkout an app called WebSharing (Lite version exists as well). It lets you access (upload/download/move) your device's files through a web portal. It works over WiFi and (supposedly) over cellular.

about to start my first root/rom

Hello group,
Wish me luck. I am about to start my first root/rom install. Going with Andromeda. This will be applied to my 5th replacement phone for the auto shut down issue. It just arrived. I am getting tired of getting replacements and waiting for a good one so that I can go to 2.2. I have read the guides. I have a couple questions that I can't find a clear answer on.
1) I already have a paid version of mybackup pro. Can that be used instead of titanium?
2) My phone is up and running on the stock 2.1. Is it normal to restore all apps, data and system settings from the 2.1 phone to the 2.2 install? Are the system setting compatible between the two?
3) I think I recall some mention of writing down some number from your original phone so that if you have to set it back to stock for warranty. I don't see that in the official instructions though. Is there such a precaution necessary?
Thanks in advance.

1. should owrk
2.Never restore system data. Your just asking for trouble if you do.
3. Back up your efs folder from system and copy it to your pc. As roms chnage android id and imei
cool thanks for the quick response. Nubish question from your response. How do I backup the "efs" folder I don't see it using the phone to browse the files or mounting the phone via usb and browsing via the pc. Do I have to root it first?

Yes you will need to root it first and then you will need a files explorer that will allow you to get to the system files. I use Root Explorer my self. One of the few apps that is well worth the money
good luck with the first go at it. I just did the same the other day and must say best decision I made with this phone.
What everyone else said is good. I would also back up your contacts and write down your APN settings. Some ROMs change the APN.
Contacts:
1) Contacts > menu button > Import/Export > Export to SD Card > you will get a vcard file saved to your sd card. You should also back this up on your pc.
2) You can also sync your contacts with your gmail account. I usually take the vcard from earlier and import it into gmail.
APN:
1) Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Access Point Names > just write down the settings in case they change in the future.

Instead of this nonsense
You will be nothing but happy after flashing. I do not mpost much on here, just read and read, but this site is excellent in finding what you need. I ran Phoenix for a while and it was very good, but I have flashed Serendipity 5.0 with the latest Speedmod kernel and its working great. Battery life seems to have improved for me with this combination.
So did you flash?? What was the outcome? Success? Check out Ceszar's continuum theme for Andromeda, just love that along with Andromeda 2.0
I'm curious too as to how everything went for you.

Yes i flashed. running andromeda for the past couple days. seems fine. much faster and the gps lokcs in seconds now. with 2.2 i can now use skype, flash, chrome to phone and use the power button for the camera shutter. All wins for me. I am not sure I get any more battery life out of this setup. I have been playing with it non stop, so I don't have any real world numbers on the battery life. I also learned that mybackup pro can't restore apps backed up from 2.1 to 2.2 I tried 3 times and every time the apps would fail at some point and I wold have to hard close them.
I have noticed a couple times that I have lost the data connections either on wifi or the 3g. Not sure it's the rom, hardware or just plain bad cell sites. but on reboot the connections were fine.
Over all impressed with the dev team for adromeda. They have an irc channel and there seems to be someone always there to answer my questions.

Just an update.
I rolled back to the untheamed 1.0 andromeda and then applied the DMT Dark Theme. did not like the battery meter so loaded modded circle one. Pretty happy with the look now. See the attached running launcher pro.
That looks really good.
I wish I had seen this thread before you installed that new ROM. I would have told you that stickies are for sissies.
Do it all from the seat of your pants and depend on luck. That's what I say. (j/k)
Do you see that business about restoring all system data? I tried that yesterday, I think it was. Got a good install of Paragon RC5. I think I then tried a full system data restore from TiBu. Rebooted the phone and it started back up so that it required a PIN to unlock it. I guess because I had been using that function before install of RC5. The PIN did not work. Tried this method not only once, but twice. Finally figured out how to use TiBu for real, I think. Makes me wonder if these locking schemes are worth using. I suppose they might buy you just a little bit of time in case of theft.
If you get to jonesing for something new, check out the ROM mentioned above.
Glad you're happy with your efforts!
.
Glad to hear it all went well for you. And I like the look you got going there. Seems like you did great for your first time

[Q] How to copy "Wireless Tether" app from HTC Indredible to my new Thunderbolt??

[Q] How to copy "Wireless Tether" app from HTC Indredible to my new Thunderbolt??
As many of you may already know, the app from the market called "Wireless Tether" has been removed (or I sure as hell cannot find it!!) I have a HTC Incredible and just got the Thunderbolt. I want to try and get this app on my Thunderbolt but I cannot save the app to my sim from the app menu.
Is there any way to do this? I was thinking open it up on the computer as a hard drive and then copy it? If so, what will it be named and where would it be located? Then where should I copy it, or should I ask how do I get it installed on my Thunderbolt???
Thank you all for any help or suggestions ahead of time. I am new to this forum and appreciate any advise. Also, if I posted this in the wrong forum or if someone already asked this questions, well sorry haha.
The easiest way to get it is to just enable airplane mode and then turn on WiFi and connect to your network. It will then show up in the market and you can just download it. By the way, nice name!
Like this. http://bit.ly/juruRY
Thanks for the name compliment finger lol, I also tried your idea of airplane and wifi but I had no luck. I am wondering if the app is even on there anymore at all? It did not come up for me either way.
Thanks TONY, I am always skeptical of downloading files but I will trust you on this one lol. Now, how should I get this onto my phone and how do I get it to open up? I am assuming I should open that link FROM my phone? Will I need to save it and where to?
Or you can Google search "wireless tether for root users" and get the newest beta edition.

Remember the episode of South Park "Make Love not Warcraft" where Randy couldn't figure out how to get "the Sword of a Thousand Truths" to Stan? -- This question made me think of that, lol.
You can do as they've described above or also:
From Incredible:
Code:
adb pull /path/to/apk.apk
To Thunderbolt:
Code:
adb push /path/to/apk.apk

You'll need to open up a command prompt in Windows and cd to the path where adb is installed on your computer. If it isn't, you're going to need to get yourself the Android SDK, and then the tools that contain adb.

You need to set your current working directory to wherever you have adb installed (I can't remember the exact directory name). If you're on Linux and don't have the directory where ADB is installed in your $PATH then you'll need to type ./adb but if you're on Windows you can just type adb. (Remember you used adb to root your phone... right?)
I remember it from when I rooted my Incredible but I have not attempted to root on my Thunderbolt yet. I used Unrevoked cause I was being a girl and was afraid to brick my phone. Since Unrevoked has not cracked the Thunderbolt yet, I will have to do it like everyone else. I guess I will look back on this forum after I root (which will be any day now) and get the program. I just want to make sure that I can still get it.
Let me ask you guys this. If I hook my computer up to my phone and run it as a "hard drive" what file can I pull to get the wireless tether program. Like where will it be located? Cause then I can just send it to my Thunderbolt after I obtain root. I actually have not even opened my Thunderbolt yet. I am charging it. I just was not sure when I activate it if I will be able to access all my files on my incredible. Sometimes i noticed phones will go right to a screen which makes you activate which I can not go around
Just download that link to our phone and open the apk file after it's done. That's all.

[Q] how to root or watch hulu? help please.

Ok I am new to this all. so I am going to go ahead and say that do not get mad if I do not understand something.
anyhow, I am wanting to watch hulu.com on my asus tf101. the builder number is 8.6.5.13.the android version is 3.2.1
I have heard people say to root it, but I am unsure how to do it. I tried a couple of sites, but they seemed old and I would find myself half way through with a link not working.
so all I have is what came on it. I just purchased it today. if you know what will make it work best to watch hulu.com thank you so much. I'll be watching this thread so please ask away if you need any more information.
also I do not paying for anything as long as it works. hence I purchased hulu plus. BUT it did not carry all the shows like it does online.

Just click on apk and it will load
Once you are rooted Do the following
go to market get superuser load
go to market get OTA rootkeeper then load
If you are strugglng with this I recommend you do not go any further (ie roms kernels)
I'am almost sure razorclaw will not work because it is based on 8.6.5.19.
It checks the version and also needs (fixed) asus-backup which was delivered with 8.6.5.19.
You can try it, but it will fail.
easy to upgrade from 13 to 19. harder to get back. But based on difficulty with simple Nachoroot poster asking questions should stick with stock.
only luck I've had so far is with www.playon.tv . I'm on their 2 week free trial right now but considering the upgrade.

Nextbook Next7s Hacking

E-Fun's latest Android tablet is now on the shelf at BigLots. It's a $99 budget device running 4.0 ICS.
I tried to install Android Market (the easy way) and the app crashes. I take that means this tablet will require a little more work. Has anyone hacked it yet?
I am also interested in knowing how to get Gapps to work on this as well...just purchased mine on the 27th at Big Lots too for the $89.99 special, been trying all apk's with no luck..keeps on crashing when clicking it.
When I sent a note to E Fun asking if there were any plans to update and add Google support, the response was:
This is not an issue we can change. Like the majority of tablets on the market Google will not grant a licenses to use their app market. The tablets are designed to work with third party Android apps sites where you can still download Android apps, the only difference is it's from a different website.
Of course I sent them a list of bunches of budget tablets that come with access...
I don't have the technical savvy to create the necessary mods -- but if anybody out there is interested, and there's anything I can do to assist, please let me know! With access to the google apps, this would be one sweet little tablet for the price!
I found this but it is for the next7 ...shouldn't be much different, or so I'd think...I will give it a try I suppose.

I'm pretty sure that was written for Gingerbread, not ICS. The last couple of posts kind of imply that it didn't work on the Next7S.
Your right...besides not finding the USB drives anywhere (as I cannot get the sdk's to work on it) I tried to uploading the files then install and cannot get some of the apks to install, like the GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk, GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk & GoogleServicesFramework.apk all others installed fine. With no luck on keeping the market from crashing boo! I am sure someone will be able to come up with something in due time, I hope.
Look at freaktab.com - Finless Bob has cooked a rooted rom with Google app,Super user and /system mounted r/w.
The download includes all neccessary instructions, files and utility - including driver - for Next7s. There is one clarification that I think will help... To get into the download / flash mode you need to hold down on volume rocker so that BOTH (volume up | down)switches are activated.

One thing I find hysterical is on the box it states it is a Capacitive Screen, but my kid used his generic plastic stylus (intended for an older Nintendo DS) and it worked! I even tried a pencil eraser and it worked too. Does that make this a hybrid Capacitive/Resistive screen then?
****Update, I got clarification in the other thread on the two different versions of the rom. All is well, the tablet is now rooted, and is running Google Play on the Finless Rom. Very happy with how quick it was to do as well. Thanks again for the link!
Please help!

Click to collapse
