I've been trying to theme Google voice and Gmail. I pull the apk with adb, add a new notification icon and push it back to the phone. The app then disappears. What am I doing wrong?

Are you signing the apk?
Yeah... no. Good call.

Well, I pulled it, decompiled with apktool, added the icon, compiled it, signed it, and pushed it to my phone and it still doesn't work (google voice). Any suggestions?
Are they just PNG? If they are you can just use 7zip and just drop them in.

Or you can make an metamorph file.

That's what I had tried. I pulled the com.google.android.gm-1.apk from my phone, added the modified png, and then pushed it back. After a reboot, the app was gone.
It's pissing me off.
Same thing happened with metamorph. The icon was changed, but then when I rebooted the app was gone.

With the current gmail update they sent it to data/app and not to system/app anymore. I did what he did and my successfully was changed. I used root explorer to copy paste to my sd card then 7zip the file and copy paste back to data/app. Make sure your using 7zip.

I was using winrar... didn't know if it'd make a difference. I'm going to give it a shot, and if I'm still unsuccessful, I'll send over the pngs and the apks.
Thanks!

Here is my modified apk if you want to replace yours with this one. Just copy paste to data/app and it should replace it. Use root explorer. Let me know if it is successful.http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13697779/com.google.android.gm-1.apk

winrar unpacks it i think. with 7zip you just
right click the zip
hover over 7zip and click on open archive
navagate to the folder with the png's you would like to swap
and drop them in.
(did not know that the moved gm. For some reason i have gmail.apk still in system/app)
looks like it was because i had a themed GM....
Actually all market GApps are in data/app I just use app monster(free on market) save the apk to SD then mount pull the apk from my phone use winrar to drop my edited images in finally use the apk manager tool too optimize, zip and sign. Then put it on your SD and install normally. If u push the market gapps to system they wont update.

Okay, it didn't work AGAIN. I copied the apk in root manager, and pasted it to my sdcard. Mounted the sdcard on the computer, opened the apk in 7zip, dropped in the png file, unmounted the sd card, copied the apk and pasted it back to data/app in root manager, rebooted and... didn't work.
Here's the files.
Am I supposed to be changing permissions or something? I don't know what I'm missing. I never had an issue with the Gmail.apk in the system folder.

sorry. i was working on another zip for someone else. and i used the same update.zip template but named it wrong.... sooooooo sorry. long week.
I cannot believe this **** won't work, it makes no sense. I even deleted the gmail.apk in the system directory.
So, I just flashed the serendipity 7 ROM to my phone today, I love it. It's fast and doesn't drain the battery. Infused seem to drain the battery quickly.
Anyway, the power button to take a picture seemed to work this morning, now it doesn't. Is there some way to get it working again? I have installed lots of apps, but I don't think any of them mess with the camera. I installed the samsung quick office, music, clock and video player. (I downloaded the 4, not sure if I installed all of them.) I used the Android Sideload Wonder Machine, not sure if that is the source of the problem or not. Any help would be appreciated.
The power button doesn't work to take pictures in S7. I remember reading this somewhere and can verify it didn't work for me after flashing S7. What I did to get it working is:
(FIRST, make a nandroid backup just in case!!)
1. Using your favorite file explorer (Root Explorer for me), go to the system/app folder on your phone
2. Mount the directory as R/W.
3. Rename the camera.apk in this folder to something like camera.apk.bak
4. Find a copy of the Infused v2 ROM, unzip it, go to system/app, and copy that camera.apk.
5. Go back to the system/app folder on your phone, make sure it's still mounted as R/W, and paste the Infused camera.apk into the directory.
6. Change the permissions on the camera.apk to match the permissions of the original camera.apk.
7. Next, mount the system/app folder on your phone as R/O.
8. You may have to delete and remake any shortcuts to the camera app you have on your home screens.
This worked for me and has worked perfectly all day, but I've only used it for a day. I won't swear that it won't mess something up in the future. I have taken approx. 10 photos since changing this with no problems, but you never know. Make a nandroid backup just in case, and save the camera.apk.bak in case it does FUBAR something.
PS: I wrote this as if you're a total noob. If you're not, I apologize. Wasn't trying to be condescending, just thorough. lol

How do I change the permissions?
Sent from my SGH-I997 using Tapatalk
If you have root explorer just long press on the file. It should have an option for permissions. The folder that the app is in has to be mounted as R/W to be able to change the permissions. I don't know specifically how to do it in other file managers. If you don't have root explorer yet, it is definitely worth getting. It's the best file manager I've used.
The exact permissions you need to set are:
All 3 rows should have Read checked, only the "Owner" should have Write checked, and nobody should have Execute checked. Make sure the file is already pasted into the system/app folder before you try to change permissions.

Is it true you lose front camera functionality and HDMI out with S7? :S
In older versions of prime, I used to be able to use root explorer to remove applications from /system/app, and they would disappear from the tray. Lately, when I try to delete them using root explorer, they disappear when I hit delete, but they are still in the menu, and still fully functional.
I really despise having facebook on here (they just added it to the rom), and the other bloat that came with it, but not can't seem to remove it. Anyone know how?

It appeared to work using Titanium. Does this mean it may be a root explorer bug? I guess I'll try downgrading to an older version of RE. I am not a big fan of titanium.
Tried a known working version of root explorer with no luck. I guess something changed in the rom or superuser which is preventing it from working properly.

If you remove the app from /system/app also delete the associated dalvik executable file from /data/dalvik-cache. This should kill the app.

I tried deleting the executable file as well, but still no luck.
Turns out it seems to be more than just the apps, I tried removing the bootanimation from /system/media with no luck. It's like I don't have r/w access.

This is probably a stupid question but did you make sure the folder was Mounted to R/W (and checking it sayds R/W at the top) via the button at the top of Root Explorer before attempting to delete the file?

It's ok, thanks for trying to help. Root explorer pops up a message if you try to delete something in R/O mode saying "... cannot be deleted because the file system is read-only."
It also seems to be working now, no idea why. Maybe a reboot did the trick. The files I remove from /system/app are now disappearing from the menu.
Still unsure on the boot animation though, is that still stored in /system/media/bootanimation.zip?

Yes but if you're on Prime 2.0.3, there's one in data/local
Anything bootanimation in data/local will over ride the one in system/media.

Yes it is.
If you copy your new bootanimation.zip file to /data/local then it will look for it there first (before looking in system/media) and load up the new file. Tested it and it works fine using Root Explorer to copy the file across but just make sure the file is made specifically for the Transformer.
Mark.
Thanks guys!
Hey so I was hoping you could help me out. I had a bunch of stuff saved in my mini diary when I flashed 2.2 for Continuum. The new ROM didnt include this app and I lost it. I have the data saved with Titanium backup but it didnt save an apk.
If anyone has the apk that would be awesome.
download the EC07 Clean zip, unzip it and grab it out of there, along with any other stock app you need
Alright so I went out and got the apk from the EC07 clean however when I try installing it I get Application not installed.
I then tried putting it in system/apps which makes it show up however when I run the app it always force closes.
Help me out?
weird, ummmm, flash EC07-Clean? idk I've never used mini diary, just always deleted it first thing
You need to manually put it in /system/app of course, you need root for that

If its fc'ing on a manual push to system/apparel, id flash the clean Ron, back up the app with titanium backup, reflash Nickinson ember and restore. Just remember to wipe dalvik after each flash

Alright got it figured out. I noticed some of the permissions got changed when I copied it into system/app so I changed those and it now works! Thanks for the help everyone!
i'm having the same problem on my Samsung Galaxy S2 for T-mobile. I tried both ways to restore it, via Titanium Backup and manually moving the APK file to system/app. i got the same "App not installed" message.
What exactly did you change on the permission? Did you change it in Super Manager? Can you post it step by step. How do you even change the permissions? Sorry, i'm a noob here.
Thanks for any help.
I used root explorer to push it into the system/app folder. Upon pushing the apk the permissions were rwxrwxrwx
Once the apk was in the folder I change the permissions to rwxr-xr-x or
Owner: read write execute
Group: read execute
Others: read execute
To change the permissions in Root Explorer you just push/hold the apk in the system/app folder and then select permissions.
hmmm...... i did exactly as you did. changed permission the same as you had it. still no luck. i even turned off phone and rebooted. Can anyone help?

mini diary works fine on my samsung vibrant. i just went straight to the system/app folder and copied the MiniDiary.apk and the MiniDiary.odex onto an external sdcard. inserted the sdcard into s2 phone and pasted it into the system/app folder of my samsung galaxy s2. am i doing something wrong?

I have a OnePlus One CM11 rooted.
I read a post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2064859&highlight=deleted
And therefore I "played" a little bit with my phone with those things:
1) \System\priv-app\ContactsProvider.apk
2)ContactsStorage from Setting ->Apps->All->ContactsStorage
Somehow I ended up with the situation that:
1)ContacsStorage does not appear at the apps list.
2)The directory \data\data\com.android.provider.contacts have disappeared.
I want to reinstall\flash the ContactsStorage app.
I know that reinstalling the rom will fix it, but I'm trying to avoid it.
Do you know of any other way I can do it?
Extract it from your ROM zip. Copy back to it's original location with a file manager (Root Explorer), set permissions and reboot.

The problem that the apk is vanishing after reboot is not a permission issue. Try a better file manager (in my case Root Explorer never fails). Mount system as R/W and do the rest.

The apk is NOT vanishing, it stays there.
The app of ContactsStorage is vanished from the apps list permanently.
As well as the folder in \data\data of com.android.providers.Contacts.
The option to sync google contacts is gone as well.

I don't know what the odex file is.
I did not back the odex file so I do not know if it's the original, but there is a ContactsProvider.odex in there.
