I know this is too early to ask and there are only speculations now.. but i am still asking this question if anyone know anything about this..
I hear that android icecream sandwich is coming with new interface and no h/w buttons support. Does it mean that Sensation cannot be updated with Android sandwich officially?
*insert n00b video linkage here for great justice*
But seriously, it's WAY too early to know anything about ICS.
Google-Android's Andy Rubin has said himself that they dont make "hard prerequisites" for manufacturers. Like the same thing people were saying about past versions of android. I believe this will be the same.
Everybody isn't ready for a button-less future. However it is a nice option for those who want it. Just like Android is now on Clamshell/Flip phones now and people said that couldn't be done. Just my opinion.

So I have been reading the last 6 months about the supposed biggest update for Android ever = Ice Cream Sandwich. I have a few questions.
- What OS # will it be ? 4.0 ?
- What's approx release date ? This fall on the next Nexus device ?
- When will other current phones get Ice Cream ?
- Is it really going to be the mind blowing incredible update they it is ? Completely change Android radically with massive improvements and new ways of doing things ?
There was lots of hype last year before Gingerbread, saying it would be a big update, and change the look of the UI and be totally fresh. But to me its barely any different than Froyo.
Anything else ?

wow, surprised that 71 people have viewed this thread, but none of them have a responded ?
I thought this site was for [H]ard Geeks only ? I am sure one of you knows something more in detail about the next big Android update ?
Ice Cream Sandwich will be Android 4.0.
It will bring a Honeycomb-style UI to ALL android devices - no more phone vs tablet OSes. This also means no more hardware buttons - they're going to be onscreen like Honeycomb.
The first 4.0 Device is expected to be the Nexus Prime, a most-likely Samsung phone with a 4.3ish" screen to be released in the fall of this year.
Some (possibly many) Honeycomb and Gingerbread devices will be upgraded to ICS.
That answer your question?
Most people are as clueless as you are. Not much info is known except it's supposed to be basically GB and HC merged for use on phones and the new Nexus one will be the first to start it off supposedly sometime towards the end of the year.

i hope that there won't be onscreen buttons, i hope there will be gestures..
swiping with two fingers down for home or something. so we dont loose any screen size for the buttons, on screen or not, they waste space on the screen
or maybe something like Zmooth in the market, where you got a small area to make gestures to simulate the buttons
i rly rly hope that they will implement something like this, and not just onscreen buttons..
So the Nexus-Prime will be the debut device for Android 4.0 Ice Cream.
If it is made by Samsung, curious how much better spec'd the Prime will be over the upcoming Galaxy S2 + ?
And I heard a rumor that Google wants to release this new Nexus earlier than the normal Christmas time, but try and compete with iPhone5 with an October launch ? Do you realistically see that happening ?

i definitely hope it will be released around the iphone5 time..
and hey, the nexus one was the better twin of the htc desire, the nexus S is the better twin of the galaxy S. why shouldnt the nexus prime be the better twin of the galaxy SII+?^^
I'm reading some stuff about ICS and i think that this release it will have the following specs optimized:
-Jit
-A new UI that fits on smartphones and tabblets,
-An optimized kernel
-A new way of interatcion with market and the other produtcts of google.
Will it support duel-core smartphones..? And if so, anyone knows how it will do it?
hope we'll get it soon
i wait it so long
One answer to all the questions you asked, no one knows

Google has not given any information about ICS. Guess they will hold an event to give all ins and outs just like they did with Honeycomb. Rumours are by the way that there are multiple ICS devices coming out at the same time in fall/winter. (LG, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Sony)
I hope that the on-screen buttons are not a design requirement for devices running ICS. It would be frustrating to not be able to get CM8 on my Tbolt.
I hadn't heard about the hardware buttons being gone, that's a shame...would it be the soft touch screened like I have on my DInc (which I wouldn't classify as hardware like say, on the Droid X) or just button screens drawn in the actual viewed screen?
So the Dual-core processor isn't a minimum hardware requirement .. thank god !
Anyone have an inkling on the possibilities of Ice Cream Sandwich for our Gtablet?
I guess anything is possible. Nobody thought we'd have working Honeycomb as of 3 months ago...
Damn, us gtab users are demanding. Ice scream sandwich isn't even out yet, and there's already a demand for it.
Doubt it

Like everything else for the G Tab it will be a hack since Viewsonic told its G Tab fan base to go ef themselves.
Ice cream sandwich will be open source unlike honeycomb. There might be possible that NVidia also can release drivers because source availability. If things go in the mentioned way then we can expect Ice cream sandwich. But ICS will be merge of GB and HC, not quite sure how much value add it will provide to the end users, but for Google and Vendors it great leap because of one version works for all. Lets wait and see...

I read someplace that HC will be open sourced when Ice cream Sandwich is released

I guess Google held back release of HC code because of fear of the two separate version of Android code in the market. Google wants no confusion, and so decided to release ICS to the communities and vendors. Again, it all depends ont he company's decision at that moment. Lets wait and see...
Hope for the best always
gTablet done, IMHO
No signs of any life re extending gTablet's life by manufacturer. And in today's aftermarket $MMI conference call another two tablets coming by year's end. No details other than 4LTE. A crowded field, all playing catch-up to the iPad 1/2. If the gTablet gets any further enhancements it will only due to the great work of the XDA developers here.
So, what is all the hype over the iphone about?
Apart from the app store and the retina display, what does it have over say an orange san francisco/ZTE Blade
Perhaps i am missing something but to me it seems more like a fashion accessory than a phone
Anyway, hopefully someone can clear this up for me
Thanks

Lol i dont mean offence to anyone, this is an honest question

I don't think the iphone is like a magical device from outer space, the problem is that there is no real competitor when it comes to user experience. So all the hype is mostly pointed toward the iphone since the other phones fail.
Ex iPhone: Your neighbor downloads an app, he recommends it to you. You download it and the app runs flawlessly on your phone and you really enjoyed it.
Ex Android: Your neighbor downloads an app, he recommends it to you. You download it and the app freezes your phone and you have to reboot every time you try to run the app and you get really frustrated.
I own an android phone and I enjoyed it, but I've been through the waters of android fragmentation and is not a good experience! My next phone is a WP7.
What I'm trying to say is that I think all the hype is because of the excellent user experience on the iPhone.
i suppose this makes sense as with iOS, everything works straight out of the box whereas that is not really possible with Android as it is designed to work with so many different devices rather than the three aplle ones which are very similar anyway
Thanks
RDS
I believe its just a Hype.
Dont think they are better or wors than a regulair smartphone.

i guess this is where ice cream sandwich comes in. in the words of gizmodo:
The next Android phone version Ice Cream Sandwich has one clear motive: to put a stop to having dozens (ok, under ten) different versions of Android on devices. Yes, fragmentation. Not just for phones, it's Google's "most ambitious" update yet.

I really hope Ice Cream Sandwich puts a stop to fragmentation, but until now I stick to the present.
I can't wait to see how Ice Cream Sandwich will do in the market. Hopefully it will be the one OS to rule them all (Android Phones)
Hellot there i just received a new tablet for christmas abd i wanted to learn some new things.
First oglf all i have to admit it that i am new to this android scene. I am a fan of apple but wheb it comes to tablets i guess abdroid has an advantage. whatever this is not the purpose of my message.
What i wabted to know is this: I received an Le Pan tc 970 but i saw they got the new Le Pan 2ut with the honeycomb support . My question is: is it worth rerurning this current tablet to buy the new one just because it has a new firmware on it? Or the hobeycomb isnt that much of a deal abd I should keep this one? Any advantages to buy the ther one in comparasion to this ine except it is new? Does it have much more feature than 2.2?
If not I know abdroid is the world of customizations... but i dont seem to get it. Do i need to root my system in order to makee tose customizatiobs available? I didnt ser that much themes for this tablet... also it doesbt even have its own section... Is it because the tablet isnt that popular?
Finally could i have some few threads to get me started? I kniw pretty much abiut apple... but Andriid is completly new to me!
Thanks! And sorry for all of the mistakes... The keyboard makes my mind go nuts... it is too big!
Honeycomb (Android 3.0) is newer version than froyo (2.2).
If you can get one with Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) then it is worth returning it
and get a new one.
Most of the tablets are running Froyo or Gingerbread (Android 2.3) .
Honeycomb is closed source, google has not released its software to public.
All other versions as of now are open source AOSP (Android Open Source Platform)
ask them whether it can be upgraded to ICS (4.0)
Well honeycomb is kinda better for tablets since it has a tablet ui but now since they released ics you should check if your tablet is getting the ics update which has a bunch of new features and if it doesn't i think you should get one with the new os.
Right! Look for ics update. It is much better
I don'T think there are many tables with ICS...? Am I wrong? And what about a starter guide?
Will Android release updates at the pace that Apple does?
When Apple has a new software update, millions of iDevices update their software.
When it comes to Android and their software updates, hardly anyone gets it.
I mean, Ice Cream Sandwich has been out since October, but only 1% of Android devices have the new Software.
I know that Jelly Bean is being released sometime at the end of this year, and will it be possible for it to be a mass release, that everyone is able to upgrade their device?
I'm sorry if this is a bad question, it's just that I'm new to Android, and don't really know much about how it works.
It is up to the device manufacturer and carrier.

1. No.
2. Good for them . Have you noticed the tiny number of devices they have (almost being exactly the same )?
3. It depends on the carrier and manufacturer.
4. Same as #3 in addition to the device.
5. No, same thing as #3.
6. Read, do research, and read some more.
