Beginning to really dislike googles purchase of youtube. - Thunderbolt General

It seems like every video I have tried to pull up recently has been "blocked for mobile devices". It has mostly been music videos, but what is the purpose of this? Other than to keep the RIAA happy? Sorry for the rant, but it's really gotten under my skin as of late because this used to never be a problem.
/rant off

This is only a problem with the Youtube app. And as for why they block them on mobile, who's to say. Could be a RIAA thing, most likely yeah. But my suggestion is to say screw the app altogether. Set your browser to use desktop config and basically go to the regular www.youtube.com page and watch your video using flash. It can be a bit laggy depending on ads etc, but for the most part its better quality and there is no blocking for mobile this way.

I think you can blame the app developers that make youtube apps that violate youtubes term of service because they allow you to download or rip mp3's from the videos.
Can't you just set your browser to desktop and use youtube.com?

Sounds more like a problem with VEVO, IMHO.
They won't even let you link most of their stuff. I'm pretty sure that Google's purchase has zero effect, especially considering how long ago Google took over YouTube.

I could be wrong, I just assumed( I know it's not good to assume) based on the fact I never really had an issue until recently.

It's kind of funny you posted this as I used to have this problem all the time. However only a few months ago Google stated all videos could be accessed from an android device from now on (don't remember the exact article) but ever since EVERY video I have looked up has played with the youtube app in HD over 4g.
So I am happy to say I have yet to have a problem at least since I switched from my Incredible to my Thunderbolt

Did you try using a browser instead of the app?

I haven't recently, but I will next time I have the issue and see if it resolves my problem. I was thinking I tried this before to no avail, but I could be wrong.

Also worth giving a shot is clearing the app cache. It may not be an issue with the content but rather an uncleared error that gets called upon on specific content.
Settings/Applications/manage Applications/YouTube/clear cache.
Turn off the phone (don't just reboot) and see if it makes a difference. Also, let us know if that does work.

Does anyone have a problem when using your browser to watch YouTube for some reason I cant anymore I have to switch to mobile version to view YouTube now

The music industry prohibits youtube from allowing users to watch their videos on the mobile app. It's the agreement youtube have with the record companies. This has nothing to do with Google purchasing youtube. Beside google purchased youtube 5 years ago.
If you want to watch that content then watch it through the browser. You must be on the desktop version of youtube and not the mobile youtube website.

I find it funny how you can just change your UA string in the browser and still watch those videos..

App to play video in background on Android 2.2

Occasionally I like to watch some very long video podcasts, but I usually only listen until it sounds like something important is happening, then I go back to the video. This is easy enough to do on a pc, but I would like to do the same thing on my droid. Does anyone know if such an app exists or if it would even be possible? From what I have read, older versions of android require a video "surface". Not sure if this holds for 2.2/2.3. Even just being able to shut of the screen would help. Thanks ahead of time to those who provide insight!
maybe
Have you tried Act 1 Video Player? I can't post a link because I am new here. I saw a review for this app, and it says it has a "play in background" option. The review said it cost $2.49, but there is a free trial version.
I currently use an iPhone. I had a Motorola Atrix for a few days, but returned it, because I could not get it to play video podcast in the background. That was before I found the review for the above mentioned app.

[Q] Browser multi tasking

Sometimes whilst surfing the net i like to listen to Youtube while using another webpage to surf at the same time, trying to do this on my Asus but it shuts down the sound immediatley.
Is there a workaround available for me to listen to Youtube while surfing?
I assume you're using the stock broswer, and switching tabs? That's weird - and unfortunate - behaviour, as I like to do the same thing (though I haven't got my Transformer just yet).
Did you try maybe using the youtube app while browsing with the browser? It probably won't work, but it is worth a shot.
I don't have my TF in front of me, but did you try using youtube in browser instead of the app? I know the app sound shuts off, but its worth a try.
Yeah i've tried both ways and also tried using Firefox and Dolphin browsers but they all cut the sound out when you open up another tab.
Hasn't anybody else experienced this?
I have. I watch a lot of Flash live streaming (StarCraft 2 live streams), and every time I want to check IRC, I have to close the browser, which causes the Flash process to freeze. The same thing applies to the YouTube app. This is by design, and I cannot think of any way to fix it.
Really unfortunate, tbh.

Yes, i have as well. The tablet doesn't do true multitasking as would a desktop pc. You can't have two tabs open that are actually streaming information at the same time.
I like to play music from one tab and work in another just like you, and the TF won't do this. It's like with the ipad or iphone, they don't actually multitask, they sort of freeze your apps until you open them again.
yea. noticed that yesterday...
sucks.
opened youtube to listen to a song, opened a second tab for guitartabs..
when i switched to the tabs..sound muted.
wtf transformer. transform your ass into a good buy..lol

I don't believe its a transformer thing, thats Honeycomb.
Well if pandora can stream music in he background it is the apps doing. The developer designed the app that way so the app will not eat the batt and the cpu cycles when left open.
Otherwise a user would need to remember to close youtube correctly with an exit button or suffer a dead batt or slow tab.

As previously mentioned, this is by design. I don't think that will change. These devices are meant to conserve power while giving good performance. Why waste it decoding video when it is not being watched? The device does do true multitasking so a browser of this nature is certainly possible. Music will play in the background just not video.
The flash layer hibernates when it's no longer in the foreground. It's by design.

Ya, its battery management.
Ask in dev forum if someone can make an app to play youtube in background.
There is a post in the Xoom forums where is works with a particular browser and HC 3.1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13916886&postcount=68
I was streaming the "This is my Next Podcast" in a browser tab (Dolphin Browser HD) switching between tabs and apps with no problems yesterday. Maybe it's a settings issue, though I never made any significant changes so I don't know what it would be. I do use a desktop user agent... hmm, I'll try it again to make sure it wasn't an anomoly.

Yep, doing it right now. Running .13 w/ Dolphin HD Browser.

It must just depend on the player, some flash content may just be a no go.

Skype works
I can confirm that xformer can multi-task no problem, but seems to be dependent on the app. E.g. Skype works fine. I can have a video call going in the background, the other party can see me and we can keep talking, while I can go to home screen, fire up the browser and start surfing. Does not work for Youtube. via the app or the browser's built-in. In fact the browser (built-in) itself seems incapable, i.e. anything running on the browser shuts down, if the task is switched away. This also applies to tabs, i.e. if I fire up two tabs at the same time loading content, only the tab on focus continues to load, while the other ones go on a "paused" state. I haven't checked with Opera Mobile (flash is dead slow on any browser other than the built-in one), so I hardly use Opera Mobile.
I think pandora works in the bg as well. But I wasn't able to get the music player going on the background. I haven't tried Amazon mp3 player in the bg yet.

[Q] non-official YouTube app problems

Hi everyone,
I have an Omnia 7 on 7392 (Malaysia) and lately I've been having a problem with streaming YouTube videos from LazyTube, YouTube (lazyworm), SuperTube, EasyTube and RealTube. None of them will playback in HQ, and the clips can't be downloaded either.
There is no problem playing the vids with the official MS YouTube though, I can even stream HQ on WiFi, but the 3rd party apps all fail to do it.
Anyone else having the same problem? Or better yet, a solution? I found another guy on the internet with this problem, but doesn't look like there is a solution. I want to watch Conan O'Brien in HQ

The ironies of life. I've been having this problem since days ago, and I even sent an email to LazyWormApps. They promptly replied with "YouTube is making some changes, we will update our apps soon". But that got me thinking, why isn't the official MS YouTube app affected? I had a similar problem when I unplugged my headset in the midst of playing a video clip and had to reboot the phone. But that didn't work this time around, I contemplated resetting my phone.
And then lo and behold, 10 minutes after I posted this question, my WP7 News app showed that news.

Microsoft's YouTube "app" is just an H.264 plugin for YouTube Mobile site. Google refuse to allow Microsoft to accessing YouTube metameta data which all the other apps uses.
Microsoft said:
Second, in 2010 and again more recently, Google blocked Microsoft’s new Windows Phones from operating properly with YouTube. Google has enabled its own Android phones to access YouTube so that users can search for video categories, find favorites, see ratings, and so forth in the rich user interfaces offered by those phones. It’s done the same thing for the iPhones offered by Apple, which doesn’t offer a competing search service.
Unfortunately, Google has refused to allow Microsoft’s new Windows Phones to access this YouTube metadata in the same way that Android phones and iPhones do. As a result, Microsoft’s YouTube “app” on Windows Phones is basically just a browser displaying YouTube’s mobile Web site, without the rich functionality offered on competing phones. Microsoft is ready to release a high quality YouTube app for Windows Phone. We just need permission to access YouTube in the way that other phones already do, permission Google has refused to provide.

Wow... Google is really being an ass about this then. I'm so glad now they lost the Nortel IP bids.
edit... wait... The outage happened on EXACTLY the same day Google started whining about losing the Nortel patent bids. You don't suppose this is intentional... do you?
SuperTube and LazyTube got an update today that fix it.
even some htc youtube doesn't support some you tube.Needs to dl ms youtube.
This happened because there's no real api to get MP4 files from youtube and I don't think google wants you to either, so you have to download the page then parse the urls out. They changed the format the urls were in.
My guess is that they don't want people to watch youtube videos without their ads, but they have to have MP4 support for other platforms. Pretty sad that they havn't provided the api to get these files/metadata to Microsoft, when Apple and others have.

[Q] Should I keep the infuse?

I only ask because this will be my third infuse, first one the screen broke, second one was stolen.
I like the infuse however I am not a fan of these problems:
Can't play youtube videos in the background
Youtube videos, or other flash videos don't just start playing by themselves
So I was thinking about possibly another phone, though I love this phone (screen, camera and all)
I was also thinking about trying to flash ubuntu (it would be a PC! at least this what I think anyways)
I was just wondering if there were better phones out there under AT&T for the money, not sure if my insurance would allow me to jump from one phone to another so easily... need to talk to the guys at the shop.
Thanks for any input
I don't know what you mean by YouTube does not start by itself but no android phone let's you play a video in the background. I would keep the infuse but get insurance on it.
What I mean by that is
On a PC (desktop or laptop etc... pad even)
A video starts playing by itself when you click the link, or refresh the page, this is not so
I mean perhaps the flash hasn't quite gotten there yet and I should appreciate the fact that I can even stream youtube videos in the first place
And the other part is, once I have this clicking, as soon as I minimize the web (press home) the music stops, same thing happens when I press the power button
(I like to look up a lot of music on youtube and listen to it in the background) while performing other tasks
thanks for the reply
Flash on Android is suspended when out of focus. There's nothing you can do about this, and it's unlikely that will change since Flash was discontinued for all mobile platforms.
flash is discontinued. It it still works and is useable just won't be updated

unfortunately this isn't just an infuse issue. Most phones i've tried won't let you watch youtube videos in the background, only if it's the main app open.
Get another Infuse. They're great phones and dirt cheap now. The only other one that's remotely better than the Infuse and the same size is the Skyrocket, but that one is $250 at the moment...and AT&T doesn't seem to be handing them out cheaply. Or you can drop down in size and get the S2...but that one is still $199 because it's a good seller. We should be getting our official GB release sometime in December so grab another Infuse and help decrease the surplus inventory.

[Q] Any possible way to disable the "TV Queue" (YouTube)?

(skip to second paragraph if you're not interested in a mild rant)
In one of the recent updates for the YouTube app while streaming to the Chromecast it'll automatically add every video you've watched to the TV queue. That's fine as I don't mind having a list of the recent videos I've watched, but the part that bothers me (enough to create a thread, which I can't remember the last time I started one) is that the video is added to the top of the queue. This makes every video that you just F***ING watched play all over again! Again, I'd be fine with this if there was any type of preferences within the YouTube app to disable such an asinine "feature" that I'm pretty sure was solely created to boost the number of views of their videos (as I see no other purpose). It really feels like Google is going the way of taking away many options within their apps and it's bugging the s**t outta me to no end. The Chrome browser within Android use to have a plethora of options such as choosing user agents and things of that sort but that option is no longer available either. [/rant]
Is there any way to disable the autoplay "feature" of the TV queue while using the Chromecast, or the TV queue altogether if needed? My current version of the YouTube app is 5.7.41 and I'm not sure when this bug was introduced exactly.
Let me know if there's more information needed, I've been out of the modding scene for awhile (I'm actually pleased with stock Android on my Nexus devices).
Thank you for any assistance that can be provided, even if it's the version number that I can roll back to before the TV queue.
Just to say that i also think its fu..in anoying! I was searching for some kind of solution and found this thread. Only thing left is to hope that youtube will change that in the upcoming update...
Well, I appreciate seeing that I'm not the only one being bothered by this. I had forgot about this thread do to the (seemingly) lack of interest and I was reading comments on my tablet while a video played on my Chromecast, when the video ended it changed to the next video on my tablet and gave no ****s as to what I was doing. Android/Google used to be the king in my book as they gave options for everything, but they seem to be following in the same footsteps as Apple nowadays and it is sorely disappointing.
Ok, this has got to be affecting more people now. I thought my newest mishap was just a glitch, but even after reboots the bug (feature) exists now anytime I stream anything from my laptop as well! The goddamn problem is also WORSE than the tablet issue because at least the tablet takes you to the video it is streaming so you can stop it an remove it from the queue. Apparently that wasn't a big enough F*** UP(!) for Google so now if you play a youtube video from a laptop that is part of a playlist, then play a different video that's not within that isn't within a playlist, when the non-playlist video is over the previous playlist will start playing again. ARE YOU ****TING ME!?!?! Now I have a playlist playing on my Chromecast that the ONLY ****ing way I can get it to stop is to start playing another video and then stop it!. Please inform me that the lead developer/designer setting the path for Chromecast has autism or some other disorder they have a legitimate reason for being this ****ing stupid.
I totally agree with you guys, it doesn't make any sense why it behave that way!!
bumping this, as i'm bothered by this as well
wonder why it doesn't affect more people though... it's probably not a widely used feature
I am also very pissed off with this! Every now and then, in the middle of the video, it pops up.
It stays there for hours (at the minimum) and it lowers that brightness and has the annoying symbol for it covering the content of the video!!!
This is extremely disappointing!
Bothered by the same thing. The problem was fixed a while ago, but now it seems it's back. As soon as I want to play/cast a video, the TV queue is populated with all other videos in that playlist. I would like it to play THAT video, then stop. :/ I can removed one and one video, but that sucks when it's maybe 60 videoes in that list.
