Switching Roms help. Theme question as well - Verizon Droid Charge

I recently rooted my droid charge for the first time. I still really don't know what I am doing but I did the cwm recovery with odin. Then I had pbj OC and gummycharged 1.8.5 in a zip file on the phone and I did not use odin with them. I want to try out humble because I want to try something different. But I want to use the theme ADW minimalist metallic. Is there a certain ROM that has to be used with this theme.
Another question I have is if I do a wipe via recovery mod, will I have to reinstall CWM with odin and redo pbj OC?
Thanks, sorry once again for noob questions. If anyone is able to help me via skype or some kind of instant message/mic program I'd be very appreciative. Ill be on for another hour or 2 tonight.
EDIT: If i do a factory reset on my phone will it unroot it and put it back to stock? On a few guides i see it where it says "wipe/factory reset" then next line it will say "wipe cache". Does this mean to go through cwm and wipe it. Then go to privacy and factory reset, or do they both do the exact same thing. And I dont know what wipe cache means. Thanks
PM me if you are able to skype/IM me.

I went through the same rooting process you did and did a factory reset and it won't make you lose root and you will still have CWM and whatever kernal you installed. By the way I always wipe cache when I do a factory reset to be on safe side.
Since you can't use CWM to backup in nandroid then once you do a factory reset to try out another rom you lose all your programs, settings etc and have to reinstall.
A program in the market called "Samsung Odinmaker" is like nandroid in that you can make as many backups of your system as you like thus making it very easy to switch roms and play around

So to try another rom all I gotta do is factory reset, put the zip of the rom in the sd card and go from there?
I dont plan on it but is there a way to try a new cwm or kernal.
Thanks

Thanks so much for this tip.
The only thing that has kept me from trying new roms was the hassle associated with not having a nandroid to restore if I didn't like the new rom.
I'm currently on Humble 1.2 and will flash the Humble 2.0 when I get home because I guess Odin doesn't work for Mac.

factory reset?

I have a question that needs an answer
I installed VU on my inspire 4g. i have all my contacts on it and such . however i am giving that phone to my wife now. can i do a factory restore and it will restore it to the way VU was originaly installed without my apps and my contacts?
thanks !
Yes you can, just either do the wipe user data option from clockworkmod recovery, or do a factory reset from the options.
thank you !

No don't do that. Custom roms install things that will be deleted if you factory reset. Then it will bootloop or be missing apps do a master clear and then reflash the rom
what is the master clear? how do you do that? and you say flash the ROM, do you mean the stock ROM from HTC?

That depends on which rom she wants. If its her first android rom and you want to shoot for a stock feel then yes do the stock HTC rom. If she is comfortable with a custom rom then do a full wipe and then reinstall VU. Custom roms install things to the data partition which gets wiped when you do a factory reset causing apps to force close or not be there and depending on the custom tweaks it can also cause a bootloop at times.

[Q] How to use g2xscrubber?

How to flash the g2x scrubber? I dont think I have NV flashed CWM. Should I do that 1st before g2xscrubber? I do have CWM as an app, can I flash from this? Should I expect sub-menus, in the process?
Does this scrubbing preserve my phone contacts and apps?
Can someone walk me thru this please
G2XScrubber!
You should definitely flash CWM via NVFlash first. Once that's all said and done, make a NANDROID Backup, then flash G2XScrubber. After you flash that you HAVE to flash a Rom afterwards, otherwise your phone won't boot.
1.CWM is not an app.
2.Yes you should NVflash CWM.
3.G2x Scrubber wipes everything.
4.Contacts are stored either on sim card or Google Account or both.
5.All the answers you need are easy to find if you search.

Make sure you use nvflash to install cwm or you may not be able to enter recovery after you do a wipe.
To use g2x scrubber you select "install zip from SD card" and select the g2x scrubber and wham bam thank you ma'am clean install.
Pin it to Win it.
Thanks a lot for the quick reply.
I got a g2x thru craigslist. It had Phoenix blood v 1.1 on it.
Is there a way to find out if CWM has been NV flashed before re-flashing it?
Also, CWM shows up under the app. menu ( but I understand it is not an app)

Power off phone. Hold power and volume down button at same time till android screen comes up. At that point it should show cwm recovery if its on there which I would think it is if you are on customs rom

I would just nvflash the newest cwm anyways. Couldn't hurt and then you know it will stick
Pin it to Win it.
Thanks
Just NV flashed cwm5.0.2.0. No problems.
I should store all contacts to sim and backup apps thru titanium backup--correct?
Should I perform a nandroid backup--since I am on phoenix blood v1.1 (not stock, remember I got my g2x thru craigslist)--is there any point to this? Am I ready for g2xscrubber? (Since this is recommended before any other roms)

Yep you got it. If your going to stick with Phoenix blood I would wait a few hours as hell is going to release 1.8 in a few hours. But defiantly make a nandroid and tit backup is my app of choice for apps.
When your ready to flash download the rom and Google apps off the OP. Then run the scrubber and then the rom then Google apps. Reboot system then let your phone sit for a few minutes ans your good to go
Pin it to Win it.
when you say run the g2xscrubber or flash the g2xscrubber, is this done from CWM recovery screen? That is get into CWM recovery menu--find the install from SD submenu--choose g2xscrubber and hit enter?
Do I have to perform wipe data/factory reset, before g2xscrubber?
(I have g2xscrubber as the only file in the microsd now; once I perform a nandroid backup as suggested, I will likely have more files. Is it okay to have more than the g2xscrubber in the root of the sd card?)
I guess, I am asking too many questions (possibly too simple for some); just want to be careful; I have seen too many people ask questions after they have screwed up (also to confirm that I have tried to look up these questions about the scrubber for which answers do not exist, so far)
Thanks again

Yeah you got it , put your new rom and gapps on the SD as well. You don't have to do a wipe/factory reset that's what the scrubber does . Make sure you do the nandroid before the scrubber lol
Making bad decision's one at a time.

Nexus S 4G Root issues?

I've been playing around with a Nexus S 4G that I have lying around and never used, and I've ran into a few problems, but you've all been helpful. I rooted all my old EVO 4G's without any problem, but the other day I rooted my NS4G using a one click/simple root and downloaded ClockWorkMod etc. But now for some reason It seems like I've almost lost my root? Is that possible? I still have the little unlocked symbol when booting up.
I've searched this forum and Google and haven't found anything, which could possibly be because I don't know what to look for. I've never had this happen :/
Currently running the stock 2.3.7
Nobody? I just need a little help.

Yes, it did. Thank you!
Now I just need to re figure out how to backup my stock rom on rom manager. I need to do that if I'm going to flash a custom rom onto my NS4G correct? I've never actually gone that far with my phones lol.

Okay lol hold on so just go make sure you
1. Unlocked the bootloader right?
2. Flashed a custom recovery (clockworkmod)?
3. Flashed superuser for root access?
4. Now you have a stock rooted ROM?
If you have/did all that then yeah you could backup your stock rooted ROM, you don't need to back it up but its helpful just incase you mess something you could always restore it to start all over
And you could backup any ROM you install incase you didn't know, just remember when you install different ROMS make sure to do a proper full wipe which includes data/factory reset/wiping DALVIK cache, and formatting system and boot in the "mount" option in CWM. And now I think your good lol

Unlocked Bootloader? If I boot in fastboot it says Unlocked. Is this what you mean?
I have ClockWorkMod, but I haven't done anything with it.
I have superuser from the root
and I was working with a stock ROM the whole time....
I think I'm ok lol
So I'll back up my ROM, and flash a Nightly CM9? And back that up as well? Just perform a factory data reset before doing so, right?

Yeah if it says unlocked your good to go. The super user.zip you first flashed won't be needed once you flash different ROMS, it was only needed for stock because you didn't install a ROM you just unlocked the boot loader and super user just gave you root access that didn't come with stock.
Yeah backup your stock ROM JUST in case you encounter a boot loop so you can just restore and start over, you don't need to back up CM9 that's completely your choice if you want . Its convenient though if you like CM9 but still like to flash other ROMS that way you can just go back if you miss CM9 without doing the whole setup process.
And a full wipe is
Data/factory reset
Then wipe dalvik under "advanced"
Then wipe system and boot under the "mount" option in CWM

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to post links to videos or not. But I'm in love with some of the features this guy has on his NS4G
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKdyAm3CgHc
He said it was a nightly etc.
The hidden status bar and bottom menu hidden is amazing. I also like the inverted G-Mail and Facebook. Is this all separate from the Nightly ROM?

[Q] How to get back to GB from Jellytime

Sorry if this has been covered way too many times but I want to make sure.
I have rooted my phone that was running 3.20.502.52 with the AAHK so now I'm on the version it sent me back to and I have done nothing since. I am getting ready to switch to the Jellytime R29 ROM. I know to make a Nandroid backup but I was a little concerned about getting back to the state my phone is right now should anything go wrong or if I don't like it, go back. It seems that I can't just restore my Nandroid through CWM without flashing a different kernel since I'd be coming from a JB ROM.
My current setup is:
Android: 2.3.3
Sense: 2.1
Kernel: 2.6.35.10-gd2564fb
Software 2.47.502.7
So, in order use my Nandroid in case the Jellytime messes up, do I simply have to do a factory reset, and wipe cache, and dalvik-cache (this is considered a "full" wipe, yes?) and then flash a compatible kernel then restore my backup? And if so, can I find that exact kernel somewhere to flash or is there another one you guys can recommend me to use in my situation? OR, can I just straight up restore the Nandroid since the backup should cover the kernel too?
Sorry I'm a newb. I'm trying to learn. All help is greatly appreciated. I'm hoping to flash Jellytime as soon as I know how to recover from it.
1. Welcome!
2. The kernel is included in the backup. You also don't need to wipe anything; just restore the nandroid. Make sure you use a fully updated recovery; make sure using ROM Manager for CWM or the 4ext Updater or Play Store app for 4ext.
3. A full wipe is system, data, and cache. Dalvik is already included if you wipe those. A factory reset only wipes data and cache, leaving system unwiped. In 4ext just choose "wipe all partitions except sdcard."
Alright. I already flashed Jellytime a while ago and so far I see no reason for wanting to go back although I did a quadrant standards test and scored lower than stock. Not sure why, but either way, this was a nice first ROM. What I wiped in cwm was the reset, cache, and dalvic. So far everything is working if I missed anything.
Didn't know wiping wasn't necessary for using backups. Must of missed that in my reading. Thanks though. I'll become less of a newb over time.

[Q] Will a phone Reset make me lose Root?

I'm having an issue with an app and I've tried everything I can think of to troubleshoot it, Uninstall/re-install. Turn phone off/on, restart phone.
I was thinking of trying a reset on my phone, but it's currently rooted/unlocked.
Will doing the reset under settings give me any issues?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you
If you have a custom recovery installed like twrp or cwm you can do a full wipe from there and it will essentially do the same thing.
sent from my VenomOne M8
No it wont.
I also have the same question. Did you do the reset? Lose root? What happened?

Yes it will. And if you think it won't a little more elaborate post would be helpful...... ?????
I would not do a factory restore from Settings with a custom recovery installed. I have never tried this on the M8 but on the Transformer tablets that can get you into a nasty "forced reboot to recovery" loop.
If it's an app causing the problem, just do a Factory Wipe in recovery. In TWRP the Factory Wipe will wipe all your apps and their data (not your personal files in data/media though) and also cache and dalvik. Not sure how CWM handles that option....
Read the recovery log while it's running or save the log from the Advanced option and check afterwards which partitions the recovery wiped.
For good measure re-flash the rom and you should be good to go.
