My Sensation is attacking my interwebs!!! - HTC Sensation

On my Mac with Norton Antivirus I am getting ARP Cache Poison attacks multiple times a minute.
After trying to figure out WTF is going on... I figured out it doesnt do it when I am connected to the interwebs by tethering to my phone. So, I re-connect to my home network and I am not getting the attacks... weird... only thing different now is my cell phone is not connected to the WiFi...
So I connect my Sensation back to my WiFi (turn off tethering) and BAM the attacks come again...
I looked at the history and it all started the night I got my Sensation...
Its stock out of the box from T-Mobile... (Paid full pop for it)... I ran that "Look Out" app and it changed nothing...
WHY is my Sensation attacking my computer! This is only happening on my iMac that has Norton Antivirus / Firewall on it. My other mac doesnt show it but I do not use it, but no viruses found...
WHY is my Sensation doing this? Anyone else having this issue? Do I have a program on my Sensation that is causing this...
It completely bogs down my internet speed on the computer that I know it is attacking... and also caused my comptuer to slow down... I think it is doing this to my other computers as well, just havent looked into it as much on those yet...

All apps have been installed since day one when this started...

Perhaps a factory reset, then install apps one by one testing in-between until you find the culprit.

Get rid of your Mac and get a real computer.

Yep. No problem with my Sensation sharing wifi with my Windows PCs.
How could Android ever pass up an opportunity to go all Terminator on a Mac?

I have 3 PC's, but I havent checked them yet to see if anyhting funny is going on... I do know that my internet on this particular mac (1 of 2) has been slow and computer over all unresponsive at times...
Im going to do a factory reset - re-install apps one at a time and see what happens...
Regardless of a PC or MAC, your PHONE should not be pinging out to the computers on your network...
My G1, MyTouch, Cliq, Nexus ONE, Nexus S, MyTouch 4G, G2, never did this... so there is something up..

Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App

Here I go... gonna wipe it and start new...
wish me luck... :-/

well... I installed NO applications.. just factory reset... and its still doing it... with wifi calling on or off...
suggestions?

U have done all you can, factory reset has not solved it then contact HTC but seems odd other users have not come across this.

Most users do not use anti virus on a mac... But even when the anti virus is disabled, the computer is lagging every minute while the phone is on WiFi... Once I turn off WiFi no problems. really weird...
I was told on another forum that this shouldn't happen if the computer is connected to the network via WiFi only but it does.

You could try to terminate Norton temporarily, and use an alternative just to see if maybe Norton is acting up. Just a thought.

I can disable Norton from looking for / making notifications for "ARP Cache Poison" attacks...
But I don't understand why the mac address from my phone is trying to access my computer.

I use Norton and on the 3 pc's I use it on iv'e not seen this. They are on 3 different routers as well. Might be a mac version bug?

Oh... I get it now. Disregard my previous post then.
Did you fire up any of your non-Mac systems to verify if the issue persists with them? If you discover that it does, it would make a strong case when/if you contact HTC about this.

I am afraid to turn on my PC's... Its harder for anything nasty to do anything on a Mac... I think I need to give it a try and see what happens...
By the way... the box was sealed with the clear / red print sticker when I got the phone direct from the T-Mobile store...
I blurred out my MAC address but you can see what the log looks like... 17,773 attacks so far...
I have now had WiFi on the phone off for a half hour, and not a single attack...

I think the source of the problem is Norton. It is mistakenly considering your phone a threat because it is detecting that (by the nature of tethering) something unusual is happening. My theory is:
Effectively when tethered, the phone is acting like a seperate network interface on your macintosh, and Norton (or the OS) has logged the WiFi MAC address of the phone as an external interface of the computer. When it later sees this MAC on the WiFi network (when the phone connects seperately) Norton is interpretting that as another device impersonating your computer to intercept communications traffic.
I suggest reporting the problem to Norton.

Well, that does make sense...
BUT, here is the kicker... I NEVER teatherd this phone to the iMac until tonight while I was "trouble shooting" the problem.
From the night I set up the phone I have been getting these "attacks"... The first one was June 25, 2011 after I hooked up my homes WiFi on the phone... it started immediately... I didnt put two and two together until Today.
So this has gone on for a week before I ever tethered the phone to my iMac.

Although, That night, I did not "Tether" the phone... but I did use "LogMeIn" but I am not sure how that connects to the computer etc... I used LogMeIn on my home network and away on Data... But if I remember correctly, I didn't use LogMeIn until after midnight... ugh...
I tried on a PEECEE... I cant find anything trying to access it... but I think I turned off computers being able to access it or something I dont know..

Yes DHCP is enable on the PC
Have you done any testing/troubleshooting at all? Do you have another computer you can try?
It's really difficult to troubleshoot this knowing only that a "Windows 7 32-bit PC shows limited or no connectivity." A number of things can cause "limited or no connectivity" issues - e.g. actual environmental interference, hardware issues, security software, etc.
If you're running Windows, you typically don't need any security software other than clean, solid, resilient Antivirus software. I'll stop there, since that's a thread's worth of a completely different conversation.
Try to remove all variables from the mix or try another device in the mix. 3rd party software firewalls can block anything from accessing a system via UNC path to any "new" network changes. Shoot, even in Windows there's the "Public" vs. "Home/Work" network profiles. Again, there are so many variables here, it's difficult to say.
A tip for any Windows user: if you do ipconfig /all @ a command line and your IP address starts with 169., it typically means you're not getting an IP from your gateway (i.e. your router, your myTouch, etc.) I could go on and on about possible issues.
Try the following and report back:
- Reboot your computer
- Temporarily disable/remove any 3rd party security software (particularly all-in-one/3rd party firewall software)
- Try another computer/device and see if it experiences the same issue

First of all thanks for taking of your time to help me out i really apreciated
I did all ipconfig,release,renew,flush dns,reboot,shutdown & restart turn off ipv6
and bacck on right now is firewall completly off and all i get is unidentify network the signal is full but i got a yellow shield between signal bars.
My PC is a Sony VAio,also tryout with another Laptop an Acer with the same results,I can't figure out wants going on.
Also I try different security like WPA2(AES)mypc ask me for the key ans still get unidentified network Limited Connectivity
What IP address are you currently showing on either of your laptops, when you do ipconfig /all? Just the first octet - e.g. 169.x.x.x - will do.
192.x.x.x.x the one of my belkin router
K, just making sure it wasn't 169.x.x.x. You said "the IP from my Belkin router" though. I know you have limited/no connectivity issues, but right now, your default gateway is your MT4G, not your Belkin router. Granted, they're both going to default to 192.168.1.1 - is the Belkin in anyway an "issue" here in this mix? If you power off the Belkin, can you connect to your MT4G's hotspot?
Where is the MT4G when you try to connect to it? Right next to you? Across the house? I think I have seen a few people post actual hardware issues in regard to the WiFi adapter, but I'm not ready to say it's a hardware issue yet.
My gut tells me it's something simple and even something non-technical, so to speak. Is there anything that could interfere with the device? I don't like the fact that that when troubleshooting the IP you were getting from your MT4G, you gave me the IP your gateway (Belkin router) gave you. Do me a favor and try powering off the Belkin and then try to reconnect.
I looked at the "Manage Users" section and it doesn't really look like it acts as an access list @MAC address. I was thinking maybe somehow you'd blocked your MAC address from connecting. I figured that's what that area of the hotspot would be (in addition to being able to kick users), but it doesn't look like an access list feature.

It says media disconected but in the connect to a network tab says connected and in the icon on the taskbar says unidentified network acess local only ;(
Are the "Public" vs. "Home/Work" network profiles at play here? You're running Windows 7 on both laptops you tested right? I don't have a Windows 7 machine close to me right now, but the network types/profiles can definitely affect which networks you're allowed to connect to.
Do you have any XP machines you can test with? Even a Mac or something not running Vista or 7?

No man but I didn't have any problem with my G1 running Super D
Yeah, but that's not really troubleshooting. You're dealing with Vista, which introduces new security settings - particularly when you connect to a new/unknown network.
Since there are SO MANY variables and since we really only know that "my laptops can't connect," I think it's time to do some really basic, basic troubleshooting. I've seen far too many users have issues with Windows, based on what they've installed, how they use it, etc. If you can at least get someone with a Mac, iPhone, a Windows XP machine, an Ubuntu machine, etc. you can at least rule in/out the way you're managing your network in Vista.
I'm not in front of a Vista or Windows 7 machine right now, so I can't give you granular details, but your Network and Sharing Center settings can make or break which network you are connecting to...

Did we cover any 3rd party security software you're running? Whether it's ESET Smart Security, Norton 360, Kaspersky Internet Security, etc. each can stop your system from connecting to a new network (and prevent incoming network connections). I can only troubleshoot from the 20,000 ft. level here without knowing the details about your system.
PM me and we can try and troubleshoot a little further.

OK understand you pint I'm doing a test with my Ipod Touch and i got access Hummmm" So that means is something with windows?
Bingo! Exactly what I was getting at. You're trying to find the "constant" here. Windows Vista and Windows 7, without any 3rd party security software installed, "manage" the type of network you're connecting to - e.g. Public, Home or Work.
In addition to Windows itself, you really need to look at which 3rd party security software you're running. Which security program(s) are you running? Programs that are more than just antivirus - i.e. they also act as a firewall - can block your system from connecting to a network/resource or block your system from being connected to - specifically when there is a change to the network or a new resource is added to the network.
I have a feeling there's a constant across your two laptops - i.e. either your Windows network settings/security are at play or you have an additional 3rd party software firewall at play on both systems.

Sorry to give bad news I was so happy about the connection and start to updated an App in the market when I noticed it was downloading so fast and realize the connection for MyTouch 4G hotspot timeout and the Ipod got my router,so I make maky ipod forget my network and try to connect to MyToch 4G Hotspot and isn't connecting.....back to square 1
Well, not exactly. You actually connected, right? Sounds like you got as far as the Market, started downloading an app, etc. Whereas before, you couldn't even get an IP.
I don't want us to try and troubleshoot two different things, even though it might seem like they're related. Can you connect your iPod to your MT4G Hotspot again and not try and download anything? I just want to see how long it stays connected for while you browse around. Browse the Market, Web, etc. but don't download any files. Just humor me.

[Q] Google Earth not loading on Asus Transformer Andoid Honeycomb 3.0.1

Hi,
I have an Asus Tablet running Android Honeycomb v3.0.1. I have installed Google Earth v2.0.1 in it. But whenever I open the Google Earth Application, It waits on the main app screen for 15 seconds, then gives me this error message:
"Alert !
Google Earth can't connect to the network right now. Please quit and try again later."
Just FYI, I do have WIFI connected and running while opening this app. I have been getting this error since the time I bought my tablet (10 days ago). I have tried uninstalling and re-installing this app, but to no avail.
Waiting for a useful reply. Its a shame I am not able to access such a wonderful app on a nice 10inch screen.
Thanks.
2.0.1 works fine on mine. Strange.
Works fine for me too...

Im having the same issue :-(
Same issue with mine. Cannot connect to the network.
Have uninstalled and reinstalled as well.
Between this and the backlight bleed i'm none too happy. With all the good reviews this thing has been getting i'm a tad disapointed.
Just did the 3.1 update and it's still not working. Anyone have any ideas how to get google earth working? Every time it's cannot connect to network.
Have you tried master reset?
no i didn't try a master reset. Google earth was like the second or third thing i put on this after i opened the box and it didn't work straight off. I've seen a few other posts around the web as well with people with the transformer and this same problem and not one solution.
I would give factory reset a try...
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
you can try to clear the cache of Google earth through the applications option in the configuration menu. That trick did help me a couple of times when apps did not work!
Ok did a factory reset. Went through the initial setup and the FIRST and only app i installed was google earth. Still the exact same problem. Cannot connect to the network.
The other computers on my network can access google earth fine but they are hard wired to the router. I just tried my phone over wifi and it can't connect either so it has to be something with my wifi settings on my router. But i'm stumped as to what it might be. Everything is set pretty much default. UPNP is on, just using wep for security.
Any ideas?
** Update
Stumbled onto another thread for a similar problem. I changed my DNS server in my router to googles DNS and suddenly it works. I don't even claim to understand why. Wired computers were fine, anything wireless didn't work until i switched the DNS server away from my ISP to google's. Any possible reason for this?
Your ISP is filtering/throttling.
Hmm, I'm also having this problem too. GE works on my wifi from my PC, and my phone, but not on my pad. I've tried changing the DNS in my router to google's (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4), but still the same.
If I tether to my phone through 3G, works fine on the pad. Must be something with my router/network, but when it works on my PC & phone on wifi, I can't figure out why it won't work on the transformer!
Any solutions/ideas??

It sounds like your ISP is unable to resolve the google earth server's address.
Thanks for the response, but if was an ISP problem, wouldn't that also mean my phone and pc would have the same problem?
I'm far from being any way knowledgeable when it comes to networking, but I thought that would be the case??
C.
Same problem here.
An of course Google Maps works on the TF101 (it should look at same servers...), and Google Earth works on other PCs & telephones connected to same home network, so ISP DNS is not the cause.

No don't think that's the case. Every other computer on the same network was able to access it just fine through the same router and same ISP. It was only my phone and TF101 trying wirelessly. Even another wirless computer on the network was able to access it, it was ONLY the android devices that were having a problem.
Same hare, not working on the transformer, but i have no problems on any other device`s i own...

I've managed to try my pad on another wi fi network & it works fine on that system, but not on my home network, which will support Google Earth on my phone & PC, so the problem must be router/network related, but I'm damned if I can figure it out.

Have you tried what i did to see if it works for you as well? Go into your router and find the section regarding DNS and switch it to 8.8.8.8 and secondary 8.8.4.4 and see if it works.

First off, I want to do anything I can to avoid flashing a new ROM because I don't have the patience to enter the 101 accounts' password and usernames that I have.
Second, my school's student wifi works on my friend's stock UCLB3 Infuse, my kindle fire, my laptop, and everyone else's devices. However, it does NOT on my Infuse which is running MoM. It connects but the icon stays grey. I can access and download from the play store, and any other google services (gmail, maps, etc) but nothing else. Not the browser, not fb, not instagram, nothing.
Nothing is blocked on their student guest access. Don't even go there.
Just curious - is the phone able to access browser, facebook, instagram etc when using a different wife network or when using the mobile data network connection?

Yes, my home wifi, random public wifi hotspots, mobile data (when it has 2 bars or more) all work fine.
It sounds like an IP address conflict. When you connect at school make sure your phone is grabbing an IP address. Otherwise the DHCP pool there has probably been completely used.

HELP, please. PHONE MAY BE TAPPED OR BUGGED

Im using a Verizon Samsung galaxy s3. Rooted. Unlocked bootloader. Stock Rom. Stock kernel. Not overclocked. Android ICS 4.0.4. SCH-I535
So Im sittin in my room and reached in pocket, pulled out phone, unlocked it expecting to see my home screen. Instead I see Google Maps running in the foreground showingme in my exact live location sittin my house. It wasnt just the stationary arrow, it moved it circles as I did. So I pul down my status bar only to find my GPS showing off. Then I went to my location services in my settings menu and it showed all three checked off as well. So I then go back to GMaps thinking that Allow Locations was on in the app and as well that was off....
At this point I didnt like what was going on so I opened up my fake GPS location spoof and spoofed my location to just down the street in a middle of a wash, just incase if there is anyone trying to spy my spot Im atleast going to send him on a goose hunt until I figure this thing out. GMaps verified tjat I was spoofed but still was a live track of me.
By this point I was was like hmmm.... So I opened up my Permission Explorer app and checked which apps have access to my location. None of em seemed out of the ordinary other than this app I downloaded the other night that could have been "suspicious" called space junk pro. So I then went to titanium backup pro and froze this app and still Im being shown a live feed of my location in Google Maps.
Im the type of person who strongly believes my freedom in privacy, especially with cell phones, and have never ran across this problem. Some people may call me a "conspiracy nut" but in fact I just want to find the truths about things.
Everything is basically turned off except my WiFi and my data. That means blue tooth, nfc, dlna, WiFi direct n all that good stufg.
Can anyone help me??? Do you think Im possibly being bugged or tapped?
GPS is obviously on because Im still spoofing my location.
I dont want to turn off the phone just yet because if it is a malicious program, it may turn on when the phone turns on but just be undetected.
Ill be sittin by my phone refreshing every few minutes or so in hope that one ya fine folks could be so kind and gracious to help. Thank you a lot in advanced.
It's just an app that is accessing gmaps. My phone does the same on wake up from sleep.
If you really are that paranoid you will have to remove each app one by one to find out what is accessing gmaps.
And if the one in a million chance "they" are tracking you what will "they" find? And do you think anything you could do would truely stop it? Think again; being paranoid is not worth the time.

I think you may accidentally touch and launch the map app. If someone is tracking you, they don't need to open a map app, all you should see is the gps icon on the top of your phone. Just close the map app and if an app is some how triggered the map app should re open the map app. Most gps required apps don't need to open the map app, just the GPS.
Someone's a little high...
But yeah, just an app that uses your location
Thank you for the replies.
I killed all apps, cleared ram. Opened GMaps again and then that GPS dot started flashing in my notification bar and so I quickly pulled down my status bar to see if GPS in the toggle was on and it wasnt, so I slid the status bar back closed and then my live location came up again. With no indication in the status of it veing on.
I believe there is a "them" out there and its not like they dont know where I live. I live in an area tjat has been around since the 70's for witness protection. I live in the same small town of the most notorious sherrif in the US. Thats besides the point though.
What Im trying to say is that my GPS is obviously running in the background at all times and I dont like it. Its showing me everything off, so if GMaps can access my live location when Im telling it no then something is wrong.
Im just lookin for some help. Thank you again.
Try a reboot?

Have you tried putting the phone in airplane mode??
I get followed by people I have no idea what organization they are about and what they do is follow you around and keep tabs on you. Its called gang stalking. And if anyone of ya are interesred in the bible its been prophesised and talked about in the book of Enoch and Isiah 14. They are called the "watchers" or "nephilim"
And I think these dang watchers are running my GPS in the background and if any one knows of a way I could "freeze" my GPS or something, like frrezing an aop in titanium backup I would be grateful...
Cool story bro

Okay seriously? You are on xda. If you are really THAT paranoid revert to a stock ROM and don't install apps that aren't needed. There is almost NO way "they" can still have the bug in your system if you wipe EVERYTHING. Sorry if I am coming off mean but you posted your question in the development section when your problem isn't even close to development related. You should have just waited for more people to reply rather than to go pissing people off like me. Again I am sorry if you I am coming off mean but it really wasn't necessary.
"Everything is basically turned off except my WiFi and my data"
WiFi gives away your location
Thanks, I think its a cool story too haha..... wise guy
Just did a reboot. Everything is still off. Opened GMaps, same thing again. Live location.
I figure airplane mode would solve it sInce it stops all radio transmission, but I cant keep my phone like that cuz I wont get any calls.
Should I just spoof my location Everytime I leave my house... cuz Ive looked in the past to find ways to freeze my GPS but couldnt find anyway. And Im nervous to freeze it in titanium because its a system app and could permantly do something. I have a nandroid but I dont wanna have to restore my nandroid if I use my GPS like 2 months feom now, losing two months of stuff on my phone.
Just turned off WiFi and tested it.
Now GMaps shows my live location with like a 5 mile radius of blue surrounding me. Lol.
Wtf. This shouldnt be happening, right?
Well look here Mr trizkl. I thought XDA is supposed to be courteous as this is a community. Im honestly not trying to piss any one off, ive been coming to this site for years and I know a lot of people are geniuses on here, so I figured someone could help. Ive been very polite this whole time while my phone is frustrating me.
Honestly, you could tell people to just factory reset on about 75% of the problems on this site, but the whole point is that Im trying to solve it without having to go to that extreme.
In my eyes, the GPS is always running in my background and there is no indication why it should be doing this.
To the rest of the folks, I apologize if Im getting you upset in any manner, its honestly not in any intentions to do so.
With wifi it has a better lock than with data. There are no "watchers" searching for you. That would be ridiculous.

True.
So just through my data, with permissions off and GPS off, GMaps never in the past had the ability to show live location.
It gives a general location.

Just clear data for the Maps app in Application Manager. Your current location is probably stored in cache from your last GPS lock.

LAN compromised?

I understand this is only tangential to phone security, but my phone is connected to the LAN and I know there are some great experts here.
Here's my situation: a few days ago I had some equipment installed that required wireless access. I had to give the installer my LAN password in order to set it up. After he finished and left the house I noticed he was still in his truck for more than 5 minutes and appeared to be using a laptop. My paranoia kicked in and I unplugged my modem.
My question is what's the worst could someone do on short notice with your LAN password? I've only noticed one oddity since then. I listen to SiriusXM streaming every day. Today it told me that I was listening on a different device (which I wasn't) and did I want to continue on my desktop. That's the only unusual thing I've noticed. Malwarebytes and Norton scans don't show anything. WinPatrol hasn't noted any new bootup programs.
I know I should have changed my LAN password immediately but I have probably more than 25 devices that connect to it and it's a major PITA to go to each one and change the connection password. I will do that today but I'm still wondering what a bad guy can do with my LAN password and SSID. I do live in a semi-rural area and a stranger would stand out immediately, so I'm not concerned with some sort of war driving event.
If someone knows of a better forum to post my questions I would appreciate that as well.
Thanks!

You are talking about you´re WLAN password, right?
Yes. WLAN password.
Well, the worst thing I think is infecting one of you're device inside you're LAN or changing you're router configuration to allow access from outside.
If you're device are secure and up-to-date I don't think he could have done anything harmful (except downloading illegal things)
Worst case
If they came prepared and had everything set on their laptop beforehand they could set up a man in the middle attack on the router such that everything you get is also routed though them. Do not worry most websites use ssl to encrypt traffic which is mostly unbreakable on a well setup website. I wouldn't use anything from a "small website" only google Facebook twitter and the big name, they are reliably secure. He will still be able to see the sites but not the data. One thing to be careful of is that google directs searches inside the url so he will still be able to see searches and even which search page. He could have also setup a backdoor in the router so he can get in later and do more. If you want more pleas pm me with the router model so I can look into it. do not give me the external address or password I dont want that only the modle number.
Just theoretically this is the worst case scenario of five minutes. he would have to have everything ready beforehand and be skilled and type faster than most people but the mere possibility of this is why I got my own router sealed and set it up myself.
